Chapter 21
After warding the door to the kitchen, Sirius pulled out what looked like a whole tree full of paperwork and put it on the table with a sigh. “We need your help, Lucius. Probably quite a bit of it.” As it was early in the afternoon, right after lunch, and everyone else was at work, there were only the six of them in the house. Since he didn't care if Cissy knew what was going on, he figured this was the best way to go about getting help with the nightmare inducing paperwork his Solicitor had just sent him.
“That looks—daunting,” Remus told him, shaking his head. Still tired, though he had slept longer than normal, he sighed. He was sure Sirius was aware he wouldn’t be up to his normal level for a week or so and would take it into account. “What is it for, or don't we want to ask?”“What we'll need done before we can get the hell out of here to shore up plenty,” Sirius grumbled. “Bill is taking on the paperwork for Gringotts that will allow us to use our funds all over the world and will make it so no one can trace us through our accounts or the paperwork. The rest is to take on not only getting what we need for Harry for identification, but his passport. He doesn't have one. We also have bits like putting Remus in charge of the house so you lot can stay here without a problem, having him handle whatever problems with the estate or anything else until they can get in contact with me in some way, and an official statement from us about why we left in case someone takes it into their head to get the Ministry involved.”“We thought it best, as did Sirius' Solicitor, because if we just vanish, Albus is going to panic then we aren't sure what he'll do,” Bill told them, shaking his head.“We also need you to tell us where the house is located so we can get visas,” Sirius told Lucius, looking at him. “The rest is related to all of the above since this is complicated. He has to get a copy of what the Ministry has on the bonding, something we will need for school paperwork anyway, and everything else he can think of. It's going to take time to tend to all of this, so we thought we needed to start now.”“You do,” Lucius agreed with a nod, sliding down by them to take a gander at what all was there. “Not something I thought to suggest, honestly.”“We were talking about it last night and decided we needed to start as fast as we could since this is going to take time,” Harry groaned, shaking his head.“What house are you loaning them, Lucius?” Narcissa asked. She was in the loop with what was talked about and didn't have issues with it. All it came down to was her being curious which one.“The one in Greece,” Lucius told her, sorting through what was there to prioritize which bit they needed to send off first as some took longer than others. “It's on one of the islands and hidden for privacy. While the UK has a good relationship with Greece, privacy there is protected because of the multitude of wealthy people who use it for vacations and such. It won't last forever, but it'll keep them hidden until they can move on.”“We also wanted to pick your brain on where we can go to not only keep us safe, but make sure Albus can't get his fingers into whatever,” Bill added. “It's something we need to prepare for so we're not just running and can get paperwork in place beforehand.”“We all know you just can't hop from one country to another without some bits in place ahead of time, like visas,” Sirius sighed. “While we can't prepare for everything, we want as much in place as we can get and at least have the damned paperwork done.”“Wise thinking,” Lucius said as he sorted through what was there. “Most of this you'll have to fill out yourself, but I do know what you'll need and can assist. You'll need to get a form from your Solicitor, right before you leave, for Harry's potions. He'll need a medical passport as well as his standard. You won't have issues this way if you're searched. One of the other bits you'll need is his medical records so you can get to a Healer wherever you go.”“We didn't think of that either,” Bill sighed, adding a note about it to the list they had going.“We're also going to set up something so we can pass information to all of you and the other way around,” Sirius told them, looking over the stacks Lucius had made with the small mountain of paperwork. “I think it's mandatory, honestly,”“It is,” Remus said with a nod, sucking down more tea. “It can only help all of us.”“I'm going to say, with what I know, most places outside of Europe, other than some countries in Africa, will be safe enough for you. If Albus has any influence, it's minimal. Though I would suggest the Americas as it's so far away and not as connected with what goes on here as this side of the world.” Narcissa told the three, folding her hands on the table. “Central America would be good, honestly. Bill can easily get a job there with the banks to do curse breaking. I'm sure Sirius could as well, the same with Harry. They aren't connected with Gringotts, but are similar.”“They are quite nice as well, somewhere you'll like,” Lucius added with a nod. “They are far more laid back than we are on plenty. The weather is always good as well.”“We'll look into those and see what we can find,” Bill said with a smile. While he knew Harry and Sirius had plenty of money and was sure they could live off of it for the rest of their lives, he would go barmy sitting around doing nothing.“Sounds good to me,” Sirius told them. “I honestly don't care where it is as long as we're safe.”“I also signed the papers to get an accounting of Harry's assets,” Sirius then told Lucius. “We don't think there's been any fiddling, of course, but we need to know what's there as he hasn't a clue. Bill didn't want to chance poking while working at Gringotts either as it might send up flares someone is looking into it. When they come in, can you take a look at them, Lucius?”“I will,” Lucius nodded, finishing up the sorting of what was there and picking up the first stack. “Let me see what he has then I can help invest part of it so you get better returns. Nothing risky, of course, but stable areas you will not have to worry about. I doubt it's been doing anything but sitting in a vault gathering interest.”“We'll let you,” Sirius nodded, pleased. Then, glancing down at Cissy, he said, “If you would, Cissy, since I know you two have traveled a lot, make us up a list of what we need to take with us so we make sure it's gathered and ready to go. We don't want to leave then realize we have to come back for something important we have to have.”“Easily done,” Cissy told him with a smile. “I'll write you up a list of must haves and add what else is standard so you know. Most isn't catastrophic if you forget them as you can buy them anywhere.”“Let's get started on what is the most pressing and takes the longest,” Lucius said, planning to jump right in and do what they could. “These need off fastest. We'll then work from there during the day while everyone is gone.”When Sirius nodded, he pushed the first papers over and began walking Sirius through what he needed to do. None were difficult, of course, they just took time to fill out.
“Is there anything you can think of to help Remus deal with what he is?” Lucius asked, looking at Sirius. They had settled in the room the two of them shared about an hour before because Remus was tired. Of course, the werewolf had fallen asleep shortly thereafter. As Lucius was trying to make this as easy on his bondmate as he could, he would see what Sirius knew. If he didn't have any suggestions, he would go to Severus.
“There isn't anything as far as I know,” Sirius told him sadly with a shake of his head. “We just let him sleep as much as possible and helped all we could. With him taking the Wolfsbane, you can't really give him anything else as it might counteract what it does. After the moon has passed, you can give him something for bits like pain. Until then, the best you can do is drinks that are heavily caffeinated and sweet. It helps.” Before Lucius could ask, he added, “We looked into everything we could while in school. While there have been some advances, most don't want to research this because of the stigma attached to werewolves. Sorry. If there was something, I would tell you.”“Damn,” Lucius grumbled, looking troubled and crossing his arms over his chest. “I was hoping. Maybe Severus knows something.”“Doubtful,” Sirius sighed. “There just isn't anything unless it's from another country. You might want to look there, though I doubt there is much at all. It's just not researched and there's no money for the ones trying. He just has to suffer through it.” Then he added, softly, “Letting him sleep as much as he wants does him more good than you will ever know. It's not something he can do most times, honestly, and makes it easier on him. Trust me, if there was something, I'd be helping you.”“Let me see what I can do to help,” Lucius slouched, shaking his head. He also vowed to find what he could from other countries that might assist.“Ask him,” Bill suggested. “He might know what works for him rather than just generally.”“He said there isn't anything,” Lucius admitted, shaking his head.“It's just something he has to deal with,” Sirius told him softly. “There isn't anything you can really do.”“There should be,” Lucius told him, looking determined, planning to find something.“This is what happens when you have something people are frightened of and stigmatize,” Sirius told him, looking down. “No one wants to look into it. If they do, they get no help. All you can do is work with the symptoms. He'll be fine after the full moon and be back to what he was in a few days.”“I'll do what I can,” Lucius said, planning to do so.He then changed topics back and passed the next papers over, “While some of this will end up moot when Harry turns 17, it's best to have it place anyway. I don't anticipate you having to do a runner before that date, but you never know. So, we'll fill it out and go from there. This is for your assets. Anything dealing with the monetary end takes the longest to get through and is the most complex paperwork. Once we finish with this, we'll get these and the ones for needed papers off. We'll tackle the ones for the passport next as it takes time to go through the system. Once we finish all these, and I'll say it'll be done by tomorrow, we'll go back to working on the mass for school.”He then began walking Sirius through what he had to fill out and where. It wasn't hard, of course, just time consuming and sometimes redundant. With a groan, Sirius went to work, hoping to knock this out fast. The sooner they were done, the better off they'd be.
After a glance at the door to make sure the twin menaces were busy, Severus unfolded the parchment from Albus and began to read. The missive had come in the mail with other bits, disguised as something else from Albus so the twins didn't think anything was amiss. That alone told him there was something in it he needed to hide from the two.
As he read through what was there, rubbing his lower face as he did, he sighed. It wasn't much, but what it said was something which made him sigh. While some there were bits he needed to know, such as the Dark Lord figuring out he wasn't answering his summons and was probably now classified as a traitor, others were the want for information.Once more glancing at the door, he read through what Albus wanted to know about. While the old man had the basics of what was going on, he wanted to know as much as Severus could provide. He didn't say why, of course, something Severus expected, but it was clear he wanted kept in the loop as he was certain what was being passed in his direction wasn't everything they knew. Severus knew it to be the truth because of bits like Potter's health problems. After thinking it over, he decided he would update Albus on all the issues with the bond, including what they had learned, but leave Potter's health issues out of the missive. After all, his issues weren't part and parcel to the mess. From his understanding, it was 'one of those things' that happened to far too many who carried the gene, nothing which could be helped. However, as he thought about it, he wondered about the bit they heard at the 'meeting' before the blowup. There was plenty there he was certain Albus didn't know. On the other hand, if he gave it up, the bond might react badly and undo the progress they had made. This left him in a quandary. What he learned at the meeting wasn't anything bond related, other than the bit with Potter and the Weasleys in the house having a more longstanding and closer relationship than Albus realized, probably aiding in what Black, Potter and Bill were able to manage with the bond. He just didn't know if he should relay the information or not. With a sigh, he shook his head. This wasn't an easy decision on his end. While Albus did need everything he could get on the bond to help figure it out, work around so much which dealt with the Dark Lord so he could figure out how to proceed and deal with all that happened because of the bond, some bits weren't areas he wanted to pass along. Hell, he wasn't sure if he could pass them. Even if he could, they were personal and of no one's business. If anyone in that house found out he passed some of this, they could make it plenty miserable for all of them and it wouldn't aid in the bond making it easier on the three in it. He was also sure there would be a backlash from Fred and George over it. After all, they made it clear some of it was highly personal from the start. After hearing what he did, he understood what they meant. While there was no love there for Potter and Black, they were entitled to privacy on some bits. The same with the Weasleys involved. They had—yes, there were legitimate reasons they felt the way they did. What came from that debacle when Molly showed up with the others had been building for a long time. The way he saw it was they received just what they earned over the years, though not full payment and, though loathe to admit it, he agreed with all Potter had said. Hell, what happened was nicer than what he would have done to anyone in the same circumstances.Still not sure what to do, he tucked the letter into his robes then leaned back and picked up the book he had been reading. Though it was open and he was staring at the page, he wasn't reading. Instead, his mind was all over the situation and trying to figure out what to do. He thought he might cut the baby in half and give up the information on the bond. No one in the house would probably object to him doing so. Then he would wait and deal with the other part later when he could figure out some areas. It wouldn't do to have him invoke a backlash on himself. He might find a way to include a hint towards that end to Albus as well so the old man didn't think anything off. When he decided that plan was how to go about this, he still couldn't focus. He was—troubled, by plenty.Honestly, his vow to Albus all those years ago was to protect Potter. It's the reason he spied. That was all. Nothing more. With him not being able to spy anymore, as long as he protected Potter he kept to the vow. Now he was wondering if the Dark Lord wasn't the only one he needed to protect Potter from. Better than anyone, he knew just what Albus was like. The old man was cooking up something to do with the boy; he just didn't know what yet. If he could actually get information from Potter he didn't already have, he might be able to figure it out. He just couldn't. Potter wouldn't give up anything to him because of his past history with the brat. No, it didn't help. The more he thought about it, the more he wondered if Potter needed protected from Albus just as much. While the old man never came out and said anything to him about some plans, he knew there was something going on. He just didn't know what and had no way of finding out. Asking Albus was a waste of breath or writing skills as he would just end up spun in circles and get no information. As Albus talked to him plenty, he was sure he had more information than most, but he didn't have a clue about what the old goat was planning. While he was working on the clues, he wasn't getting anywhere, which told him he needed to go about this a different way. When the twins walked by the door, talking about something or other, he wondered if finding out everything he could from the end of those in the house might not be the better way to figure this problem out. If he could get the information, and that was a huge if, he might be able to slide it together with all he knew from Albus and sort it accordingly. The problem came in with getting the information. So many in the house viewed him with as much suspicion as they did others and were unlikely to give up much of anything for fear of plenty, him poking probably being at the top of the list. While he tried to sort out how to manage, his eyes lifted to the door again, brow furrowed. Fred and George might have most of what he needed. They were close to the parties involved, closer than Albus thought in fact, and knew plenty. It was just a matter of figuring out how to get it out of them. The trust issue was too big for him to work towards it and manage quickly. While it needed built on, he figured it would take too much time. There must be a better way to go about getting the information while helping the bond. He just didn't know how. It was his feeling he needed to know sooner rather than later. If he didn't figure it out, they might all end up in the middle of a nightmare they couldn't control. And he didn't mean one with Molly and the brood returning, which he was certain was coming at some point. No, this was one bigger than anything they could pull.Still staring at his book, he tried to think what he could do to manage to get the information he needed. While his mind kept poking at the thought of the spell they applied so they couldn't pick at each other, he didn't think it could be used for this. Maybe, though, there was a privacy spell he could find making it to where none of them could reveal a damned thing to anyone not keyed into it. If he could find out, he might manage to get the information he needed to slide the pieces of the puzzle together. And if it worked well enough with Fred and George, he should be able to persuade everyone in the house to apply it so they could air everything out when it came to the mess. He wouldn't say why he wanted the information, of course, but it might give him what he required to figure this nightmare out before a bigger one presented itself.Once more putting his book down, he focused on what he had in his library, wondering if there might be such a spell in one of the books. When he came up with a list of some books he could remember, he wrote down the titles then summoned an elf from the house. Passing the list to the creature, he gave clear instructions then sent the elf off, pleased when the books appeared a few minutes later. After ensuring he had parchment and a quill ready, he picked up the first in the stack then perused the table of contents for anything close. Even if these books didn't have the particular spell in them, they might have a footnote or something he could use to find others. As long as he had avenues to explore, he would manage to come up with something, or so he hoped. He soon found himself lost in the contents of the books, mind working over what class the spells might be in if they were listed under privacy. If he could find anything close, he could easily retool one and make it into what he wanted. While it wasn't the route he wanted to go as it would take too long to manage, he would do so if there wasn't any other way.Focusing, he began to take notes, pleased there was at least some information and leads, even in the first one. Maybe, just maybe, this was something he could manage. It would just take diligence and work, nothing he had problems doing.
