Chapter 21
With a sigh, Sirius looked around the bedroom. Harry was still sleeping, as he expected, and everything else was in place. Which meant he could go to the appointment for the tattoo removal without a problem. However, it came down he still wasn’t sure about this. Leaving Harry alone in the house was fine. In fact, they had done that plenty since the return from the other side. It was the idea of leaving him with others. Since he didn’t know how long this would take, he wasn’t certain Harry would sleep the whole time. The idea of Harry being around Bill and Charlie without him there left him twitching slightly. Harry was never left alone with anyone longer than fifteen to twenty minutes, max. This would be for longer and he wasn’t sure if he should or not.
Hands scrubbing through his hair, Sirius groaned then nodded to himself. He would. If there was anyone safe who wouldn’t set Harry off it was Bill and Charlie. They had a good relationship and just talked, nothing horrid. The two accepted Harry for just what he was, never trying to push too much or question areas they didn’t want them to. And he had warned them, in his own way, Harry would be here alone. It was as good as he could get.
Eyes drifting to the sleeping Harry, Sirius slumped. He’d do this. While he’d worry the whole time he was gone, it was a step he needed to take. After all these years since they came back, it was time to loosen the leash just a little and let Harry stay alone with someone. When he returned he would get a full accounting of what happened so he could decide from there what to do next time, if there was one, Harry was left alone with someone.
After another glance at the sleeping Harry, he stepped forward and left a note reminding Harry where he had gone, though he reminded Harry the night before, on the table beside the bed. Giving his husband a rub on the head and grinning a tad at the mumbling he heard from him, though he didn’t wake, just shifted slightly, Sirius stiffened his upper lip then snagged his robe and left. Though he would worry the whole time he was gone and fret slightly, he’d do this. It was time he did something alone and gave Harry some time alone. This needed to happen. And he would do it.
As he came into the kitchen, Sirius was still buttoning his robes. Like he expected, Bill and Charlie were there. They were playing some cards, just relaxing with a bottle of beer each. With a smile, he said, “I’ll be gone a while. Not sure how long this will take, but it might take some time. Just wanted to let you know. Left a note for Harry so he knows.” This was commonplace for him when it came to Harry, so he didn’t always realize how odd it sounded to others. Just his way of covering his bases.
“Not a problem,” Bill told him honestly, though he thought it odd. Again, he thought it was like Sirius asking them to babysit Harry in some way or keep an eye on him.
“He won’t bug us,” Charlie assured him with a chuckle. “As groggy as he is when he wakes up, it’ll end up quite amusing. Just hope he remembers to put clothes on before he comes down.”
With a laugh, Sirius assured them, “Made sure to include that in the note. He might have clothes on, but not sure if they’ll be on right.”
“Should be good for a laugh,” Bill snickered, shaking his head. “Ron was a bad influence on him.”
“Something was,” Sirius grinned, shaking his head. “Right, I’m off. Just wanted you to know.” Then he finished up, downed a quick cup of coffee and headed out.
Bill waited for the front door to shut then told his brother softly, “Still think there is something odd with that. Might be the babysitting bit or he might be worried about something with Harry. Not sure which, honestly.”
“He and Harry are together all the time, so this might be odd,” Charlie suggested with a shrug, though he did tend to agree. “Either way it’s not a problem. Harry’s good with us and doesn’t cause problems.”
“Makes me wonder what’s behind it, though,” Bill admitted. “Not our business and I won’t dig, but the curiosity is there.”
“I admit it is,” Charlie agreed with a nod. “Doubt it’s anything to worry about. Harry’s not violent or anything, just a bit more short tempered than he used to be. It’s under control, though, from what we know. He’s never caused us a problem and it’s doubtful he ever will.”
“Again, I agree,” Bill nodded. “As long as it doesn’t bother us, we won’t worry about it.” Then he tossed out the winning card and grinned. “Another for me. Be thankful we aren’t betting on this. You’d be losing your arse if we were.”
“I know,” Charlie moaned, tossing his cards on the pile. “I know better than to bet with you, the reason I won’t. Once in a while I’d liked to win, though!”
“Keep right on dreaming there,” Bill laughed, scooping up the cards and starting to shuffle them. “You sure you don’t want to bet?” He then teased as he shuffled.
“No way in hell,” Charlie snorted, shaking his head. “With you and betting? Hell no. Money isn’t involved, as I well know, but not opening myself up to any of your deranged ideas either! You’d pull them out, that’s for damned sure!”
“You like my deranged ideas,” Bill teased, chuckling as he did. “Besides, it’s fun to watch you squirm when you know you’re losing and your arse is on the line when you do.”
“More reasons I won’t,” Charlie shot back, still shaking his head. “Just deal, Bill. And none of your weird ideas. I refuse to take the bait and bet with you.”
With a laugh, Bill then began to deal the cards, teasing his brother as he did. This was always fun, even when they didn’t bet.
After coming out of the bathroom and tripping over the chair by one wall, Harry scrubbed a hand over his eyes to wake up a little more. Though he had taken a shower, he was still tired.
Making it over to the bed, he squinted then looked at the clothes on the bench at the end of it. Good. He didn’t have to try to find clothes and risk forgetting to put something on. Taking a seat on the bed, groaning softly, he shook his head then finger combed his still wet hair. He then spied the letter from Sirius. Of course, he remembered Sirius telling him he would be gone when he woke due to the appointment, so he wasn’t worried he wasn’t there.
Curious about what was in the letter, he snagged it then opened it up. A quick read through told him it wasn’t anything to worry about, just a reminder he would be gone for some time. Then he snorted and grinned at the reminder there were people in the house and not to forget his clothes before he went downstairs. At the end there he said they would do something special if he behaved right. When he finished, he tossed it back on the table then grabbed his clothes and started to tug them on. Oh, he would, no problem there. Bill and Charlie were people he didn’t have a problem with. The only thing he had to watch out for was his own mouth so he didn’t say anything off-color to them, especially about the kiss he witnessed.
Grin on his face, he couldn’t help but chuckle just a tad over that. The vision the kiss produced was still there and he wanted to ask plenty of questions about the relationship. However, he’d keep them to himself and just act normal.
As he pulled on his clothes, his thoughts slipped to how odd this was. While Sirius went out on his own, it generally wasn’t for long and he was awake when he left. For the first time since coming back, he was actually dressing and taking care of the normal by himself. Sirius usually did all this for him. It felt odd as he was so used to the other by now. And, honestly, he liked it the other way better. There was something still exciting about it.
Ensuring he had everything in place and it wasn’t inside out and fastened right, he yawned. Though he slept longer than normal, he was still tired, but was hungry. For now, hungry would win out. Maybe after he finished eating he’d come back up and sleep more. He’d wait and see though. With a shake of his head, he hurried up and finished then stood, stretching with a groan. At least he was decent and could get some food. Scratching his stomach under his shirt, he looked around for his slippers. Since he didn’t have to go anywhere, he wasn’t putting shoes on.
Once he slipped them on, he stretched once more then headed down the stairs with a mental reminder to behave himself and keep his mouth under control.
When Harry came in, Bill glanced at him then tossed the winning card out, grinning at the moaning Charlie. With a chuckle in his voice, he said, “Good morning, Harry. Or afternoon as the case may be.”
“Afternoon,” Harry grunted, sliding onto the bench by Charlie and gratefully accepted a cup of tea from Kreacher. As he sipped it, he watched the two brothers.
“Afternoon,” Charlie said, shaking his head at the trouncing he was getting from Bill. This was always the case as Bill seemed liked he had some sort of mystical ability when it came to cards and winning at them.
As he sipped his tea, eying the plate of his breakfast that showed up in front of him, Harry observed, “Looks like you’re having fun.”
“He’s having fun, I’m getting my arse whooped,” Charlie snorted, gathering up the cards and shuffling them. “The usual there. For whatever reason, he has a gift as a card shark. And he practices on me as I’m the sucker who keeps playing with him.”
“Hones the skills,” Bill chuckled, sipping his drink.
“Remind me not to play with him then,” Harry snorted, starting to dig into his food.
“You’re welcome to join us,” Charlie offered. “The more the merrier there.”
“No thanks,” Harry snorted as he started shoving food in his mouth. “Especially if he’s a master of them. Too frustrating.” He added between bites. While he might like playing, he didn’t think it was a good idea. He tended to get overly competitive and snarly about it. Best not to try.
“He is,” Charlie laughed, dealing out the cards and snorting at Bill’s smug look.
Bill picked up his cards, sorting them how he wanted them, then told Harry, “If you want, once you wake up a little more, we can continue with what we’ve been doing in the club. I’m sure there are a couple of areas you can cover with us. Put us all a bit ahead that way.”
“I can,” Harry nodded. Then he snorted and grinned just a little. “Let me wake up more first, though. Still rather muddled.”
“We can tell,” Charlie chuckled, giving Harry a nudge as he looked at his cards.
“Take your time. Not like we have anything else to do,” Bill added, tossing out the first card, already planning his strategy for this game.
When Sirius stepped into the house he was wary. The first thing he did was hone in on the voices he heard, hoping Harry was either upstairs asleep or calm. When he heard all three voices coming from the kitchen and sounding calm, he relaxed. With a sigh, he headed that way, pulling the ointment they gave him out of his pocket.
Yeah, Harry wouldn’t have handled this well as it ended up quite painful, probably more painful than when they were put on in the first place. Thankfully, they got most of them. He only had one more treatment to go and that was for the most complex of them, like on his chest. He could now roll up his sleeves and no one would see them, well, once the swelling and redness went down anyway. That would only take a couple of days. His next appointment was the following week, same day and time. Then he wouldn’t have to worry about them ever again.
He was pleased when he stepped into the kitchen. Nothing at all off. The three were there discussing the club and working on their training while Bill and Charlie played cards. Harry seemed quite relaxed and was even grinning a little while they talked. Perfect!
Sirius winced slightly as he sat down by his husband because it pulled on some of the tender areas then tossed the ointment on the table.
“How did it go?” Harry asked, concerned. He couldn’t miss the look when Sirius sat down, so wondered.
“Went good,” Sirius assured him with a nod. “Just tender where they worked, nothing more. They got most of them. I have to go back again next week for them to finish, but they’ll be gone after that.” Arm slipping around Harry, he gave him a squeeze then said, “You’re staying home for that as well as this isn’t something you’d handle well. It hurt like a right bastard and it’s clear it does.”
“No, I wouldn’t,” Harry told him with a shake of his head, not even wanting to think of his reaction if he saw Sirius in pain like that. Best to stay away, that’s for damned sure.
“It’s fine though.” Sirius soothed, hoping it didn’t upset Harry too much. Most times he could predict Harry’s moods and how something would affect him, but there were times he couldn’t. This was one of those. Then he grinned and added, “I can roll my sleeves up now! This I like. After next week, I can leave my shirt unbuttoned. They’ll be gone. From my end, it’s well worth the pain.”
“As long as you think it is, I suppose that’s all that matters,” Harry agreed. Then he snorted and grinned a little, giving Sirius a nudge with his elbow, “I still rather like them, honestly. Find ‘em rather hot.” Then he waited.
With a snort, Sirius rolled his eyes and gave Harry a playful shove. “I know, but my choice to get rid of them. If I get another tattoo, it’ll be a nice one. However, after this, I have no desire to get another one. No thanks.”
“I can see the point there,” Harry laughed, shaking his head.
“You could get one,” Sirius joked.
“No thanks!” Harry answered with a shudder. “Don’t want one! Ever!”
“Didn’t think so,” Sirius snickered, summoning a butterbeer. Then he looked at the papers spread around and changed topics. “How is the mentoring going?”
“Fairly good,” Bill answered, grinning at the banter between the two. “Harry’s explaining it in a way that we can easily understand.”
“Nothing tricky so far,” Charlie added with a nod. “I don’t think it’s a problem and we won’t have issues taking it on. I’m sure there is more we’ll learn when we really start working as it won’t be covered, but this isn’t bad, honestly.”
“Good,” Sirius told them, pleased. “For the first few weeks, Harry will stick with you most of the time. I’ll help when I can, of course, the same with the others so you understand what’s going on where and why. If you’re picking this up, you shouldn’t have a problem. This weekend I’ll start introducing you to some of the regulars, especially the ones who want help keeping an eye on their subs. It’s best you get to know those.”
“Not a problem,” Bill nodded. “We’ll help all we can.”
“You’ll like them,” Harry interjected. “Most, when you’re just sitting and talking, are a riot. It’s only when engaged in something they’re serious and are in their role.”
“As long as they don’t expect us to engage in talk about it too much. We just don’t know enough yet,” Charlie said with a shake of his head.
“Nothing to worry about there,” Sirius assured them. “It’s mostly just talking about the normal or funny stories about other areas. You’ll enjoy it. They’re good blokes.”
“Good,” Bill told him, relieved it wouldn’t end up a long talk about the lifestyle. Though he was curious what they would say, he didn’t want to end up involved in those kinds of talks yet since they were out of their depths with them.
“I’ll help Harry go over the rest of what he planned then Bill and I will work out his schedule so I know what we’re doing there. I assume it’s more involved than just every other weekend, so I want to plan out all I can,” Sirius said looking around.
“It is,” Bill nodded. “I’ll go over all of it with you so you can plan. We can even work some of it out when it comes to longer stays.”
“As long as we know ahead of time, we can do plenty,” Sirius assured him. Then he had Harry explain where they were and what they were covering so he knew and could plan accordingly.
Leaving Charlie and Harry in the kitchen, Sirius and Bill were in the room Sirius used for a study, where he kept most of the paperwork and whatnot for work. They were going over Bill’s schedule for having his daughter so Sirius could come up with a way to work around it. As he had the schedule out and was looking it over, he asked, tone distracted, “Everything with Harry went fine, didn’t it?” He assumed so, but wanted to know.
“Just fine, no worries there,” Bill assured him, puzzled. Then he couldn’t help himself and had to ask, “What’s going on with that, Sirius? I mean, we’ve known Harry forever, or so it seems, and he’s not a problem. Just a tad different now, nothing more. Not sure why you’re concerned.”
With a sigh, Sirius wasn’t sure what to say, but figured he better answer lest the two get more curious. As simply as he could, he explained, “Dying changed Harry, probably more than any of you can guess. He’s different now, as I’m sure all of you have seen. Sometimes his temper isn’t as easy to control as it once was. Since he’s not used to being alone with people, I worry. Nothing more than that.”
Since that was the explanation his parents gave, well mostly, Bill nodded, but still thought it was more than that. “We’ve never had a problem with him. I notice he won’t do some stuff, like playing cards like we suggested. He seems a little—well, odd at times, but nothing we’ve ever had a problem with. He’s still just Harry, how we all remember.” Then he lowered his voice and added, “Was Albus involved in any of this? Whenever we mention him around Mum and Dad, they have a not good reaction to his name. We’ve heard a few things as well, though not much.”
Sirius groaned and leaned back in his chair. Scrubbing both hands through his hair, though wincing as it pulled on some of the now tender areas, he wasn’t sure how to answer. However, he would. After thinking it over, he finally said, “Yeah, Albus was involved. He—let’s say one of his plans backfired as he didn’t know all he should have. The result is the change in Harry. Plenty are right upset with him over this. While the war ended the way we wanted, his plans affected Harry more than any of you will ever know.”
After taking all of what Sirius said in, Bill gave a slow nod. While it didn’t explain everything, it did enough. However, it also made him more curious as well. “I know Albus was plenty smart, but he messed around with too many people’s lives for my comfort. We didn’t know how much at the time, but we’ve heard since then. And I don’t like some of it.”
“He did more than most ever knew,” Sirius snorted, looking sour as he thought about just what kind of hell Albus’ manipulations caused. “It’s nothing to worry about, honestly. We have it under control when it comes to Harry. He’s good, as you’ve seen. Just different. Rather like you two around him as he trusts you and it gives him someone to talk to besides me. That alone will do him more good than either of you know. He’s not really had that since we came back.”
“Harry’s a good bloke and always has been,” Bill assured him with a smile. “Nothing to worry about there. Both of us like talking to him, just like we always have. We might not have known him as well as the others in the family, but he’s good by us.”
“He likes both of you as well,” Sirius smiled. “Don’t worry about the changes, it’s still him at the core. Just takes a bit getting used to, nothing more.”
“Not that much,” Bill told him with a shrug. However, he was now more curious than ever what caused the change. Was it death itself or something else? He didn’t know. While, in the long run, it didn’t mean much, he was still curious and wanted to know. He wouldn’t poke, though. No, that was a bad idea. With what the two knew about his relationship with Charlie, it wouldn’t be a good idea. He then shifted to a more neutral topic, “You going to be able to work around me having the kid?”
“I don’t see why I can’t,” Sirius told him, straightening up, and focusing back on the task at hand. “It’s not that complicated, honestly. We’re picking up a few more floorwalkers anyway. They can cover plenty of the weekends you’re not around.”
“Just so you can,” Bill nodded. However, his mind kept drifting to Harry, unable to stop thinking about it. Yeah, he wanted to know and understand. Not sure how to learn more, he decided to keep a closer eye on it.
