Chapter 21
Tom held his breath, eyes all over, and stayed alert as he stepped through the wards of Grimmauld Place. Though the Fidelius was in place, he could get through it, surprisingly. Once in the front hall, he cast a spell to detect if anyone was around. It quickly came back as deserted except for the house elf.
Wand lowered, keeping it out to ensure he didn’t end up blindsided and defenseless, he stepped into the front hall then called for Kreacher, glamour sliding on as he did. He thought the elf would respond better to Lord Voldemort because of the family’s leanings when it came to their beliefs.
As expected, the creature turned up quickly. When the elf saw who he was dealing with, his eyes widened then he went into full grovel mode. Perfect! Once he managed to get Kreacher to stop, he began peppering him with all kinds of questions, especially about what to stay cautious of in the house.
A pleased smirk on his face at all the information he garnered, Tom had the elf remain by him as he walked through the house. While he just wanted to see what was here and the house, he also wanted to find out if the Order left anything of use behind.
When they finished the tour of the house, Tom hadn’t found anything useful when it came to information, but did notice plenty of interesting things, including one of his Horcruxes hidden by the elf. Curious how it ended up here, though he knew from what the elf said Regulus had been involved, he didn’t really care. As long as it was safe, that was all that mattered.
Though he didn’t find anything dealing with the Order, he was pleased with the foray and the information he learned. As he starting changing the Fidelius to make himself the Secret Keeper, he began giving Kreacher orders, starting with how he wanted this place so clean it looked new. There were other minor orders as well, such as keeping an eye out. Though he didn’t know what he would do with the place, he wanted it done. You never knew when it might come in handy.
Once finished, he made ready to leave, but ensured Kreacher knew his orders and the elf would report to him if someone showed up. When he felt certain it would end up taken care of how he wanted, he left. There was still plenty to tend to today and he wanted it done.
“The rat will end up Kissed,” Moody grunted as he took a seat in front of Albus’ desk. “There’ll be no deal with him.”
“I expected as much,” Albus admitted with a tired sigh. While he wanted to talk to Peter to see what he could get out of him about Tom, he knew there was no chance he would manage. With all Tom knew, it was doubtful Peter would remember anything useful anyway. Tom would have ensured it.
“My understanding is they tried to get plenty out of him, but nothing he’s given up is at all useful,” Moody grumbled. “He knows what he’s facing, so he admitted to plenty about the last war, but nothing that helps us now.”
“More I anticipated,” Albus groaned. “Is he going to trial? Do you know?”
“No,” Moody informed him with a shake of his head. “He’ll plead then his Brief will try to argue his sentence. Only hope he has here.”
“Then he has none,” Albus told him. “The panel will deliver the harshest sentence because of what happened and the injustice done so long ago, especially since some on the panel now were back then as well, allowing it to happen. They will see it as payback.”
“It’s deserved if you ask me,” Alastor grunted. “Ruined plenty of lives and responsible for plenty of deaths, he is. It’s the reason he hid.”
“More I won’t disagree with,” Albus conceded. “I just wish we could find out what he knows about Tom.”
“Won’t get it out of him, no matter what,” Alastor told him dejectedly. “Either he truly doesn’t remember or he’s hoping it will somehow save his worthless skin in the end because he gave up nothing that is at all useful to those who questioned him.”
“I tend to think the former since I’m sure Tom had a hand in ensuring he ended up in the hands of the Ministry,” Albus groused with a shake of his shaggy head.
“Most likely,” Alastor agreed with a grunt. “Now, what do we do? Too much has changed and we need to adjust plans because of it.”
“I’m working on it,” Albus told him. “I think, for now, Sirius is the key to at least stopping Tom to give us the chance we need. If we manage that, we have some areas to tend to.” Then he began explaining the Horcruxes.
By the time Tom arrived home, he was tired but pleased. It had been a productive day. After Grimmauld Place, he had gone to the Ministry. As odd as it would seem to so many, he did go to the Ministry from time to time. While cautious, he was always able to manage with some of his contacts slipping him in. No, he didn’t go into the busier areas or around higher ranking workers, but he did manage to do what he needed.
While there, he picked up information he needed from several people, pleased with what he heard. Part was about Wormtail, of course, and Draco, but the rest had to do with his plans. They were going according to plans, all of them. It put him in a good mood and relaxed. While this wasn’t as easy without some of Lucius’ contacts, he was managing quite nicely, teaching him he could easily do without the Malfoy patriarch in matters. The knowledge made him feel more confident and had him honing his revenge for plenty. Oh, he would keep Lucius close to ensure he could watch him, but the time had come for him to relieve Lucius of most of his duties.
As he relaxed, checking the time, he then smirked and pulled some bags out of his pocket. After he summoned an elf to take the packages, he then set the creature off to set up for lunch in the main dining room and inform the other two. Rather than have the elves cook, he had picked up take out. Though not sure what the two would like, he grabbed the standard. While doing so, he was once more confused by his actions. His excuse to himself, and he knew that’s just what it really was, came down to he wanted restaurant food and picked up for the others as well since he didn’t want to eat out. Honestly? It was like the brooms; he did it to make them happy. Though disconcerting, he was going with it. After all, it was harmless.
A smirk on his face, knowing the two would enjoy it, he shoved the other thoughts aside then rose to meet them in the dining room. He was looking forward to this, no matter how odd it was.
Harry took in the pizza with all the fixings and couldn’t help but grin. “Smells great! The elves must have gone all out for this as it’s looks and smells like the stuff you buy from restaurants.”
After hearing Sirius agree, Tom looked smug then imparted, “The elves didn’t cook it. I picked it up while out. Thought it might taste good and we’d all enjoy it.”
“It’s good either way,” Sirius nodded, digging in, adoring the flavor.
“Thanks,” Harry muttered as he went to town on the food, smiling at the taste. It’d been forever since he had a good pizza.
“Wasn’t sure what you two liked when it came to toppings and whatnot, so went with the standard,” Tom told them, feeling good at their approval.
“Anything is good by me,” Harry told him, polishing off the first slice and some bread sticks. “Just so it’s not some off the wall toppings or anchovies.”
“Same here,” Sirius nodded between bites of the delicious food.
“I’ll remember that,” Tom told them, smiling slightly, relishing in the feelings, something which seemed like it would push for more from him. While uncomfortable with the idea, he knew no way to put a rein on himself and stop it. If it stuck to just these kinds of areas, he could handle it. All he hoped was it wouldn’t grow more overt.
“Anything we need to know?” Sirius asked as he ate, glancing at Tom. They knew he had been gone all morning, so he was curious.
“Some,” Tom told him between bites. Then he imparted the bit with Wormtail. “He has no chance of getting off in any way. Sources tell me he’ll end up Kissed for plenty of reasons, including the embarrassment he caused the government over this.”
Though his gut curdled slightly because he knew what that punishment involved, Sirius nodded. “Understood.”
“At least it’s justice, though too late for plenty of people,” Harry added softly, leaning against Sirius as he ate.
Tom said nothing and just nodded. Anything which would come out of his mouth would sound hypocritical since he was the cause of so much when Wormtail spied for him. Instead, he changed topics. “I visited Grimmauld Place today,” he mentioned casually, trying not to smirk.
A slightly panicked look on his face, Sirius’ head came up then he looked at Harry, who appeared equally concerned. However, he didn’t say anything, waiting to see where this went before he did.
“Nothing to worry about,” Tom told them, amused by their reaction. Then he walked them through what he had done. When he finished, he shrugged, “The Order is gone, so there was no chance we would encounter each other. I changed the Fidelius in case we need the place for something. You two will be the only ones let through.”
“Understood,” Sirius answered with a heavy sigh. Thankfully the Order was gone, but he didn’t like the idea. However, it was best to know now rather than end up blindsided.
“I set your elf to cleaning the house properly,” Tom then added, smirk in place.
“He won’t,” Sirius sneered, shaking his head.
“Oh, I think he will,” Tom chuckled, smirking bigger. “Since I gave the order when I was wearing my glamour of Voldemort, I’m sure he’ll obey.”
“That probably worked,” Harry chuckled, grinning a tad at the thought.
“Oh yes,” Sirius added, grin firmly in place. However, he hoped that the evil git had walked into the room with Phineas’ painting so the pain in the ass could pass it along to Albus. At least it might help something and let Albus know to steer clear of the place.
As that was the end of business he planned to discuss with the two, Tom then began asking them about plans for the day. He assumed Quidditch was coming and planned to join, but was curious what else they might come up with to entertain themselves so he could either participate or keep an eye on them. With the way the two were and how they were growing accustomed to the place, he probably needed to keep a closer eye on them than he had been lest they cause untold amounts of havoc and blindside him. No, he couldn’t allow that to happen.
Brow furrowed as he wandered down into the basement, Tom wasn’t sure what the two were doing down here or up to, only that the elves had told him this is where they were. As far as he knew, it was just storage, not for anything important, and had an ancient pool which needed not only a heavy-duty cleaning, but filled. Now he was curious, wondering what they were up to. When he followed their voices, something which sounded like they were laughing while they talked, he then pulled up short and plastered himself up against the wall as the two zoomed by on their brooms, laughing uproariously. With a shake of his head, he watched them follow the twists and turns of the ancient basement. Unable to help himself, he smiled. They were having fun. While odd, they weren’t harming anything, just flying through the maze of rooms.
With a shake of his head, he pushed off the wall and watched them as they headed towards the other end of the massive basement. When he stepped into the huge room with the pool, he looked it over then summoned an elf. Yes, he would have it cleaned and filled for them. It might give them more to do. Glancing around, he looked at the dank walls and decided to give the whole basement a good cleaning and brighten it up down here. Some windows like those in the Ministry came to mind. It would make it nice, especially since winter was looming.
Just as he finished giving a small herd of elves orders on what to do, the two zoomed back in then stopped, hopping off their brooms. “Did you have fun?” Tom asked, unable to hide the amused bent to his voice or small smile.
“We did,” Sirius told him with a winning grin, shouldering his broom. While the git didn’t look upset or mad, one never knew. Besides, if he was a tad annoyed, it wouldn’t bug him a bit.
“Yup,” Harry agreed, grinning a tad himself. Then he added, so Tom didn’t get mad and cause a fight, something they hadn’t had yet thankfully, “We didn’t hurt anything. Nothing down here honestly, so we liked the idea of maneuvering around as it’s a challenge.”
“Nothing to harm down here,” Tom told them. Then, with his smirk growing, he told them the plans for the basement. When he finished, seeing Harry grin a tad and Sirius nod in approval, he added, “If you want anything or have a suggestion to make it better, tell the elves. They can easily add it.”
“Any way to get a hot tub outside? Those are great, even in the winter,” Sirius inquired. It was something he always wanted, but never got around to installing.
“Of course,” Tom agreed. “I’ll send the elves off for the kit and get on it.” Now, he knew the whole reason for doing this was to please the two, but he tried to fool himself into thinking it was to keep them out of trouble and other areas which might cause havoc. However, it was a deception that didn’t work well. Either way, he was going with it.
“Why don’t you grab your broom and join us? It’s a bit of a challenge,” Harry asked softly, not really sure why he did though. Like Sirius, he didn’t want Tom around them if at all possible because of so much, so it was odd.
Though he had plenty of work to tend to, Tom didn’t think twice. “I believe I will for a time,” he agreed. Sending an elf off for his broom, he walked around with the two to get a feel for the ‘course’ and what he had to do. After all, like everything else, he wanted to be the best at this as well.
“We need to set up a meeting this week with some key members of the Order,” Albus told the two seated on the other side of his desk. Looking between Minerva and Severus, he added, “Which means we need to find a day both of you can take some time off. It’ll be after hours, of course, when the students are in the dorm, but it’ll end up a late meeting so I want to make it as easy on the both of you as I can.”
“We’ll talk tonight and work out what we can. I’m sure we can shift schedules with some others a tad to ensure we won’t end up needed for something,” Minerva assured him, already trying to come up with the easiest day.
After agreeing with Minerva, Severus asked, “Can I ask what this one is about? We know it’s dangerous to have the Order in the castle. Eyes we don’t want seeing certain things are always around, even if the students are in the dorms for the night.”
“This I know,” Albus sighed, shaking his head sadly. Though they did all they could to not allow so much to go beyond the walls, it did happen. Students were inventive and those who wanted to curry favor with Tom would do plenty to gather information. “I’ll ensure we are in a place they can’t overhear anything.” Then he explained, “We need to start planning because of the shift we’ve had to deal with. It’s time to change plans and I need some input from all.” Then he lowered his voice and added, knowing Severus would understand, “And start the hunt for some artifacts we need to end the war.”
Severus immediately sobered up, brows drawn down slightly. “Understood,” he told Albus with the barest of nods to let the old man know he understood.
“This is now the time we can’t take any chances and have to shore up plenty,” he told the two, looking between them. “Until we can get in contact with Sirius, we have to go by the assumption Tom knows plenty about what we’re doing and shift massively to plans Sirius could have no way of knowing. This means changing around everything and how we go about it.”
“We’ll help all we can,” Minerva assured him, a worried expression on her face. Until he mentioned it, she didn’t think just how bad it could be if Sirius had to talk about what he knew. Of course, she knew it would end up a devastating blow, but didn’t realize they would have to probably shift everything they were doing around.
“We need everyone to focus and come up with something. While I have the most basic of plans in place, we need more,” Albus told them. Then he covered some and tried to figure out when they might manage the time away so he could start planning.
“Lucius hasn’t noticed you have a hand in anything, my Lord,” Bella told Voldemort with a deep bow. This was a meeting of those finding information about the situation with Lucius and what he was trying for Draco.
“He doesn’t even seem to notice you’ve not summoned him,” Rabastan snorted, rolling his eyes. “All he’s focused on is doing what he can for Draco. Even the most important whatever has taken a backseat to his son.”
“Perfect,” Voldemort smirked, giving an evil hissy chuckle. “Let him ignore the world.”
“We’ll keep an eye on the situation,” Rodolphus assured him. “He’s trying to enlist us to help some. I think he is planning to intimidate some of the families of the first years who witnessed the attack.”
“He will do no such thing,” Voldemort stated, voice a low angry hiss. “If you hear he’s going to try, report to me immediately. His hand will stay out of all we can manage until the courts take over.”
Once he heard their promise to do so, he stood and started to pace. “We want Draco to pay the full bill for what he’s done. The brat has thrown spanners into plenty,” he told them, trying not to smirk at the thought it was Albus who the spanners were affecting the most, not them. When the time was right, his followers would know just what was going on. Now wasn’t the time, though. “All of us will ensure Draco receives the full penalty for what he’s done.”
Once more, he heard plenty of enthusiastic agreement from all involved. Still pacing, he once more had them walk him through what they heard so he could start planning. Yes, this would end up most interesting to watch and play out. Not to mention see the normally unrufflable Lucius end up plenty ruffled.
Sirius’ eyes opened as Harry shifted in his sleep and pressed closer to him. Arms tightening around his godson, he held him close and rested his head against Harry’s. Since it didn’t appear Harry was waking, just moving in his sleep, his eyes drifted shut again, a sad smile on his face.
This was a mess, in plenty of ways. Harry wasn’t the only one it affected either. Draco—he had ruined plenty, for him and Harry, both. What Harry told him about the relationship was something he felt as well. He wanted Harry as his godson and friend, not lover and life partner. Over time, he wanted to become as close as he could manage to a father. Now? That had gone down the loo. He and Harry were essentially married and couldn’t undo it. Fucking brat.
With a shuddering sigh, Sirius gave Harry a squeeze, but was affected by ‘those’ thoughts again, a replay of what they had done in the ethereal state. Though he would admit it to no one, he wanted to again, badly. Even with Tom present. Doing it again was coming, from all he read, and he wanted it to, but would keep his libido on a leash. Plenty needed to happen before it came, most importantly talking to Harry about sex. Yeah, with all being thrown at them, he didn’t need Harry freaking out over plenty. Of all the things they had discussed through the mirrors, sex wasn’t one of them, so he had no clue just what Harry did or didn’t know. He needed to find out though so they could press on from there. Tomorrow—he would start then and go from there.
Eyes sliding open, he looked at the sleeping Harry and gave a sad smile. Kissing him on the scar that marred his forehead, he held him close, rubbing his back with one hand. “Love you, Harry,” he told him softly. With a sigh, he then shut his eyes and planned to get some sleep, hoping the sexual dreams didn’t come again. He wasn’t sure how many more of those he could handle.
