Chapter 21
"Hermione, you need to take a deep breath and just relax," Jane said, looking at her daughter sympathetically.
"I can't relax!" Hermione protested, leaning back with a huff. "There's just so much that needs to be done and I'm stuck here in bed."
"This is for the best, though, Hermione," her mother gently reminded her. "After the incident, you don't want to take any chances, do you?"
Hermione looked abashed. "No, of course not!" she hastily answered, resting her hands on her stomach.
"Then quit your crying and relax," Jane chided her.
Hermione grumbled something under her breath.
"What?" Jane asked, arching her eyebrow. "I didn't quite catch that."
"Nothing," Hermione replied, smiling.
Jane watched her warily for a moment before standing. "I'm going to make some tea. Do you want some?"
"Yes please," Hermione replied. "And bring some raspberry scones too!"
Jane smiled at her daughter. "Of course, I'll be back in a few minutes." She walked into the kitchen. "And don't you dare get out of that bed!" she shouted through the door.
Hermione sighed. It had only been three days and she was bored out of her mind. When she was told to be on bed rest she didn't think it would be a big deal… she was so wrong.
Staring at the four walls around her was making her irritable. She wanted to be adjusting the baby's room or trying to find new work. She knew she needed a job. Percy received a decent amount of money each week for his work and she received a stipend from her efforts in the War but it was bound to run out sooner or later. Once she had the baby, Hermione knew she'd need to get work at some point. But what should she do?
"Here we are," her mother said, reentering the room with a tray of tea and food. Sitting down, she handed Hermione a mug. "So, what were you thinking about?"
"What?" Hermione asked.
"You were lost in through. What is it you were thinking about?" Jane asked.
"I need a job," Hermione explained. "After getting let go from the Ministry I really don't want to work for them again. But I don't know what it is I should do."
Jane was quiet for a moment. "Well, do they put ads in your version of the newspaper?"
"The Daily Prophet?" Hermione asked. "I'm not sure. It'd be worth checking into though."
Jane smiled at her reassuringly. "Don't worry; I'm sure you'll find something."
"I hope so." Hermione couldn't help but be worried. "What if I don't though? Babies are really expensive and I don't want her to feel like we haven't provided for her enough, you know?"
"That's a common fear for a parent," Jane said sadly. "I still don't think your father and I gave you enough."
"You gave me plenty!" Hermione protested.
Jane smiled. "You see. You'll always feel like you could do more, but to your child it'll feel as if they have everything in the world. That's just the way things are."
"Well, that's silly," Hermione replied. She sipped at her tea quietly.
"Angelina told me your baby shower will be soon," Jane said, making conversation.
Hermione nodded. "It'll be next month."
"But you'll only be six months along. Isn't that a bit early to have the baby shower?"
She shrugged. "With the way things are, well, I could go into labor at any moment if I stress myself out too much. I might not go full term and I want to be prepared for that."
"Good thinking, dear," Jane said affectionately.
There was a noise from the living room.
"Hermione? Jane?"
"In here, Percy!" Jane replied. She turned to Hermione, grinning. "He's been so worried about you."
"He worries too much," Hermione responded.
"Well, I have good reason too," Percy said, coming through the doorway. He immediately went to Hermione's side and gently gave her a kiss. "How are you feeling?"
"Bored," Hermione answered, pouting.
He rolled his eyes. "I meant health wise."
"Fine," she said reassuringly. "She's been kicking a bit and there's been no bleeding or anything so it's all right."
"Good," Percy answered, relief spreading throughout him. He turned to Jane and gave her a smile. "Thanks for coming over."
"It was my pleasure," Jane replied. "I love spending time with my daughter and I was ecstatic when you came over to ask Percy."
"I don't need a babysitter, though," Hermione interjected.
Percy gave her a stern look. "We've already discussed this," he said firmly.
"And frankly, I agree with him," Jane added. "Hermione, you shouldn't be alone. What if something happens?"
"Nothing will happen," she replied. "I'm not helpless! I'm not some victim!"
"Please, Hermione," Percy begged, taking her hands. "It just makes me more comfortable knowing you're not alone. I left you alone, and look what happened."
"But that wasn't your fault," Hermione answered, giving him a pleading look. "No one knew Ron was going to lose his mind and come over."
"But I should have been here to protect you!" Percy protested.
Neither one of them noticed that Jane had slowly inched from the bedroom and left the apartment.
"Percy, I'm fine and our baby is fine. I don't know what else to tell you."
"Please, just give me this," he begged. "If anything had happened to you, I would have died." Percy looked down, tears filling his eyes.
Hermione felt the tears pool in her eyes as well. "Percy?" she whispered. "Do you blame yourself?"
His silence was the only answered she needed.
Throwing her arms around his neck, she pulled him closer. "Percy, no no no. Don't you dare think like that!"
"But it's true!" he choked out. "It would have been my fault. I promised to stand by you and keep you safe and I failed."
"You didn't fail," Hermione assured him. "Percy, please don't think like that."
He pressed his face into the crook of her neck. "I love you so much, Hermione. And I'm so so sorry."
She felt his warm tears splash onto her skin. Pressing a kiss to the top of his head, she whispered, "I love you, Percy." Closing her eyes, Hermione sighed. "There's nothing to be sorry for."
"But-"
"No," Hermione said firmly. "Now come up here and take a nap with me."
Percy happily obliged, crawling into bed with Hermione. He wrapped his arms around her waist, spooning her. "Love you."
Hermione smiled into her pillow. "I love you, too."
