Falling into Destiny
Chapter Twenty-one
There was a certain peace that came with being alone. Especially when it was cold outside, cold enough that the windows frosted over just enough to scatter light. The frozen water droplets acted like little crystals along the window, obscuring your vision of what was outside. You couldn't see down into Diagon Alley. All the shops were dark mysterious figures that loomed in the gray and white landscape. Anyone outside shopping were light gray blobs at best. But that didn't stop you from trying to see them anyways.
The inside of the room was mercifully warmer than the land outside of the window, however. Which is why you could sit in comfort staring out of it. The furnace practically roared with life as it produced enough heat to keep you quite comfy. It was strange, and maybe a little judgmental, but you had never expected The Leaky Cauldron to be as comfortable in the winter as it was. Or at least the rooms were. Eating in that public setting, even if you had been doing that for the last few days, was still quite awkward. You weren't used to eating in such an atmosphere. Even at Hogwarts it seemed to be a far more pleasant atmosphere; the food was also a great deal better at the castle.
Oh well. You had chosen to leave the Malfoy manor so you had to put up with the lackluster meals. Not to mention the dreary accommodations. At least the room was larger that the servants' quarters that you had been forced to take residence up in at the manor. Though with all the new creaks and groans of the inn it was hard to actually get to sleep. Which probably explained the lethargy clinging to your body. It wasn't a real physical state considering the fact that you still had plenty of energy. You had Draco to thank for that actually. Not that you would be thanking him anytime soon.
Regardless you still missed the ritual of sleep. It was another comfort you no longer had access to. And you probably would have a hard time sleeping until you got back to Hogwarts. Oh well. Just another day to go.

Draco held the letter in his hand as his eyes read over what was written on the paper for what had to be the hundredth time. He still couldn't believe what he had in his hands - you really had requested a divorce. His father hadn't been trying to shock him. After being married for years you asked for a divorce? And over what? A little name calling?
His jaw clenched and shifted. You had written out plenty of reasons, or excuses as he saw them, but you had never mentioned anything about what he had said at the wedding. But he could read between the lines. And there seemed to be too many of them on the paper as far as he was concerned. Too many fucking excuses.
There was no way that his parents would grant the divorce. And when he came of age he wouldn't either. Draco knew that you wouldn't take it to a ministry official either because that just wasn't your style. You delt with things quietly and kept your real business to yourself, especially the older you got. It was surprising that you had even written down the reasons you felt there should be a divorce for others to read. And though those reasons might have been enough for a divorce in many different families, Draco wouldn't hear of it.
He wouldn't tolerate the shame that the divorce would bring. He would not have people whisper about how he could not keep a wife even before the rigors of adult life set in. He wouldn't be known as the only Malfoy in living memory to have a divorce. And he definitely would not stand by and watch as Zabini walked around with you on his arm instead. The bastard had taken advantage of your guilt to get between you and him. Draco wouldn't give him the satisfaction of actually being the real reason why you and he divorced. Which wasn't going to happen damn it. This was just a bad few months. That was all. It was not a reason to get a divorce.
The irate Malfoy crumpled the parchment up once more. He had done that a few times over the past few days. And more than once he contemplated throwing the letter away. Or burning it. Yet each time he stopped himself. He reasoned with himself that he kept the letter so that when he saw you again he would make you answer for each and every line. He would make you explain and then he would make you take them back. When you and he finally made up, like you always had in the past, you'd regret ever writing this letter to ask for a divorce. Until then he would memorize it so he could prove to you how wrong you were.

You jerked from your spot at the window when you heard a knock on the door. For a moment you expected to hear "housekeeping" or something along those lines. Nothing like that came. Instead there was another knock on the door. You got up from your spot and went over to open it despite how sluggish you felt. When you opened the door to see Narcissa Malfoy there you weren't quite sure how to react. You murmured an invitation as you moved to the side. No matter the circumstances you wouldn't be as rude as to keep her out in the halls. You weren't a savage.
"You aren't looking well," she said once you closed the door.
"I haven't been sleeping. You know I don't handle new places well," you smiled slightly, though it was a grim sort of one.
"Then you should come home."
"You know I can't, Auntie," you spoke quietly as you stood near the door. "I was serious when I requested the divorce."
"I know you were," she spoke as she looked around the room. You could see the distaste on her face as she took in the rustic surroundings. She definitely looked out of place in the room. "It's a foolish request."
"I'm not good for your son," you spoke out quietly. "I know that it seemed like a good idea when we were children but things have changed a lot since then."
"Not from where I stand," Narcissa said as she turned her attention back to where you were. "This is just like when you two were children, fighting over a game or something silly like that."
"It's a bit more serious than that," you tried to impress upon her with your tone and your eyes. It didn't seem to be working. "We haven't gotten along in years. At Hogwarts we are in the same house but until this last year we might as well have been in different schools entirely. Other than Blaise no one at the school even knows that we know each other much less the fact that we are married. And even he only found out right before break. The divorce will change nothing except free him."
"From what? You? Have you even asked him if he wanted to be divorced?"
"He has made it clear this last year that he doesn't like me," you said with certainty.
"You can't be serious. I've seen how he acts around you Dorian."
You shifted uncomfortably as you lowered your eyes. Narcissa knew exactly what you were. She had known what you were from the moment you stepped foot in her house. After all, she'd been the one to take you in when your mother had gone to Azkaban. You weren't quite sure when your mother told her or how she found out but she had known since day one. She'd been the one to help you understand what you could go through when most kids only had to deal with puberty. But it was still awkward to try and talk about anything dealing with attraction and lust with her. She had practically raised you after all and no kid liked to talk about sex with their parent.
"All men would act the same," you said quietly as you kept your eyes down.
You heard her snort slightly which was so ungraceful that you couldn't help but look up. As she stared at you the older woman took a seat in the chair near the furnace. You face must have showed your shock at her response because she dignified that with a response.
"It's not all about sex, Dorian. You should learn to pay more attention."
"But it is," you mumbled. "I...I'm a cambion Auntie. A human-sex demon hybrid. Everything he or B—everything he's doing is because I have him enthralled. I took his energy so often these last two weeks that his will was bent. And if that's not bad enough I don't know how to make it right. I don't know how to fix him."
"He's not broken. I don't know how you haven't noticed but my son has been trying to get your attention back since his first year at Hogwarts."
You disagreed wholeheartedly. But you wouldn't verbally contradict her. That would be rude.
"Though I will admit that him spending his time getting into shape probably does have something to do with the fact that he has been attracted to you for years, he has done other things as well. His feelings aren't as fleeting as you may think."
"Like what?" You challenges before you could stop yourself.
"Like making sure that your new room had a furnace. He personally made sure to put it in there. I never quite understood why he insisted you had one right away. But judging from the temperature in this room it's probably because you like things on the warm side."
He was the one to put the heater in your room? You had assumed that was one of the servants. He hadn't even mentioned doing it which was why you were having a hard time believing her. Especially when it would have served him better not to have a heater in your room. Without one you might have been forced to see if you could stay in his room where it would be warmer. And once you were in his room it probably would have been easy to tempt you into coitus considering your whorish appetite.
"He has paid attention to when you have seemed low on energy since he found out what you were. He even started to go to bed at the exact same time as you when he found out you visited people in their dreams to get energy from them. You know as well as I that he didn't even understand what helping you would mean when he was ten years old. And yet, every time you were low on energy he was there. There's been many more examples over the years but recently he's took a great risk writing that letter to convince him that it would be in his best interest to plan an escape for your mother, among others. He did that, I suspect, to see you happy. And to get you home for the holidays. He always hated that you stopped coming home for Christmas."
Wait he what? Okay, baring the first part of his speech you focused on the second half. He wrote a letter to Lord Voldemort to explain that breaking people out of Azkaban would be in his best interest?
"It was his idea?" You asked in shock.
Narcissa nodded, a serious look on her face. "Lucius was furious. As I said it was a dangerous move. But he did it to make sure you would come home. No doubt so you didn't spend more time with that Zabini boy. He's been quite jealous this last term if you hadn't noticed."
Did that mean that it was a pride thing? This was long before you had enthralled him (which he was as far as you were concerned) which meant that was out as a cause. But at the same time no one knew that you and he were married at Hogwarts so his pride would have been fine if you had stayed in Zabini's company for another two weeks. In fact he had been part of the group which had spread lies about you and Blaise to begin with. Why would he do that if he wanted to separate you away from him? It didn't make any sense.
"And as we speak he is inside of his room, refusing to come out and see either his father or I. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that he finally asked for a public ceremony to acknowledge the marriage right before we told him you wanted a divorce."
He locked himself inside of his room? That didn't sound like what you expected. In fact, you expected when he found out that he would get angry. He had reacted with anger each time the marriage was questioned in the last two weeks. Then again that's also probably due to him being enthralled. Even so... based on that pattern of behavior you expected that he would have come knocking and not your Aunt Narcissa.
"It's been three days. It's time to stop being childish and come home Dorian."
"You don't...you don't understand. I am a horrible person. This hunger inside of me has only gotten worse since that incident and I don't think it's going to get any better. Before I could stop but now that I know I won't kill anyone it's like I have no control. I'm a monster. I don't even know what I've done until after. I can't remember what happens when the hunger takes over. And because of that I've cheated on him. And it will keep happen just because of what I am. He can't even stand to be around me anymore unless we're fu—" you broke yourself off as you realized what you were about to say and to whom. "And on top of all of that I've caused him to lose his friend."
"Then don't make him lose another one."
You didn't have the heart to tell her that Draco and you hadn't been friends in years. Especially since you had already told her and she seemed to ignore it the first time.
