"Simple. The three of you were his backup."
"Yeah. SO?"
"Now we come to the second reason he did what he did, and to him, was very probably the most important reason for not asking for backup."
"Which would have been what?" Kili snapped at him.
"Don't you snap at me, Kili Matthew Durin," Roark snapped right back, watching Fili reach over to smack his brother's arm. Hard.
"OW!" Kili rubbed his arm. "FI!"
"Not his fault that Kale made the decisions he did. Don't take it out on him." He looked back. "The reason? Though I think I already know his reasoning?"
"His desire...his absolute NEED to keep the three of you safe."
"Damn it, Roark!! We're warriors!" Logan barked out in frustration, jumping to his feet and beginning to pace in the space between the coffee table and the couch, running a hand through his hair. "Just like you, like Harry, we all received the exact same talks throughout the Academy training about the risks and dangers of being a Colonial Warrior."
"Of course we are, and of course you did," he said reaching out to snag his hand and pull him back down beside him, "but again, you've forgotten one very important fact, my friend."
He looked at him. "Which would be what?"
"That you, like me, are the youngest, and yes, I'm including Christopher. He is, after all, your twin. Kale, along with Dacian, Gabriel, and Alexei, were more like surrogate fathers than your brothers, especially as you, Chris, and Damien were six and eight respectively after your dad was so critically injured in that attack on Leo. They all but raised the three of you as the Admiral healed...all but having to learn to walk again."
"As for the two of you," Harry said, looking over at Fili and Kili. "Your father may have been alive, but he was posted to the Galactica at that time, and was there most of the time. You spent more time with Dacian and the others, right?"
They both nodded.
"Right. So, let's think about this from their point of view," Harry looked at each of them. "Logically, they knew...they KNOW, and have even accepted, that you are all grown men, as well as Colonial Warriors, and damn fine ones at that, but you will ALWAYS be the ones they helped to raise."
"Exactly, and to that end, they just can't help themselves," Roark picked up, "any more than Harry can when it comes to me. Rationale or not, they will always want to keep you as safe as is possible for them too, keep you as protected and out of danger as they possibly can."
The brothers watched them nod. "You suspect, I think, just how upset your family is that none of them have been able to get away, or that anyone can be sent to give you emotional support after Kale was killed."
Logan nodded, gave a deep sigh. "I do. It's part of the reason I haven't called any of them yet. Admittedly, having Fili and Kili here HAS helped, but..."
"We aren't your father, your brothers. Why didn't you say something, Logan?"
A shrug. "Couldn't. I didn't want to hurt either of you by making you think I didn't need...or want you. Especially when I did both."
"Logan," Kili began with a shake of his head, "you idiot. We never...EVER would have thought that."
"They figured that was only one of your reasons for not calling them, which now leads me to our secondary...and far more personal orders, given to us by your father, uncle, Dacian, Roark, and Aiden."
"Oh, oh. The heads of each branch of the family," Fili and Kili muttered as one, sharing wry, amused looks at the mention of their father, their uncle, and the three eldest cousins.
Logan closed his eyes, running a hand over them, before looking back at Roark. "Let me guess. You and Harry are to evaluate our mental, and emotional health, then report back to them."
"Got it in one," he said, looking at Fili and Kili, saw their shrugs as they had each already figured those would have been the order. "Especially as neither of you have called home either. I spoke to Sebastien and Robin after the three of you left our office this afternoon."
"Why?"
"You know very well WHY, Logan Adrien Durin," he scolded.
"Rory, I'm--"
His hand rose, a finger pointed at him. "Don't you DARE say that you're fine, Logan. You are as far from fine as you can get," he said, his tone stern. "You, my friend, have bound your emotions up so tightly you can barely say his name without breaking down, and make no mistake, Logan, you WILL break if you don't allow yourself to grieve for him."
It was a long few centons before he moved. Getting to his feet, he moved over to his desk, unlocked then pulled open a drawer. Drawing something out of it, he returned to the couch to hand it to him.
"He was still alive when Ki and I found him," came softly, pain in his eyes as he sat back down. "I pulled THAT," a wave of his hand to what Roark held, "from his chest." Tears began to fill his eyes now as he remembered that night in vivid detail and THIS time he allowed them to fall. "We pressed towels to the wound, but...KOBOL, Rory, there was just so much blood, and no matter what we did, it just would not stop. We could tell he wanted to tell us something, something important by the way he kept trying, but...every time he tried, more blood would fill his mouth."
He shook his head, taking the handkerchief that Harry passed to him. "Then he...died."
Roark turned the blade he now held over, studying it, weighing it. "This is a very well-made weapon. Light. Well balanced. Easy to throw should it ever be necessary. The scrollwork on the blade is exclusive," he looked closely at it under the light of the lamp beside him. "It's ancient Kobolian," he breathed. "'I am to be your death, feel my kiss.'"
After reading the words, his head jerked around. "This is one of Rodolphus Lestrange's knives," he gasped out.
