21.
Sarah Webber had been Hermione Granger’s Personal Assistant for four years. Only a year and a half into the four, Hermione had been promoted to the Minster for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and Sarah had moved with her at Hermione’s request.
In those four years, aside from that one fight that she still thought had just been a hallucination from some bad pumpkin juice that she had bought in the canteen that day (or so her friends had told her as there was absolutely no way that Hermione Granger would ever shag Draco Malfoy), there had been nothing except professionalism between Hermione and any other person who came to see her in her office.
That was until today, when Draco Malfoy walked up to Sarah’s desk with no prior appointment. He was now the Head of the International Liaison Department for Underprivileged Magical Creatures (a department of his own creation), and he and Hermione still only had a weekly meeting to discuss progress. ‘May I speak to Miss Granger?’ he asked. He had a smile on his face, something that Sarah was not used to seeing.
‘Miss Granger,’ Sarah said into a new intercom system that they had installed recently. ‘Mr Malfoy is here to see you.’
‘Does he have an appointment?’ came the voice from the other end.
‘I’m sorry, ma’am, he doesn’t,’ Sarah said.
Malfoy just continued smiling. ‘Tell her it’s important.’
‘He says it’s important,’ she said with a sigh.
‘Alright, fine, let him in,’ the voice said, sounding perturbed.
Sarah motioned to the door and Malfoy walked in, leaving it wide open as normal. Sarah scooted her chair a bit closer to the door so that she could see in, wondering what was so important.
She looked in and gasped when she saw Malfoy go straight around to Hermione’s side of the desk and lift her off her seat, much to her chagrin, and set her down on the desk. He moved between her legs and bent down to kiss her, which Hermione returned for a few moments. Then she pulled away – ‘We’re at work! What are you doing?’ in a hushed voice.
‘I’m sorry,’ he said, not sounding sorry at all. ‘I just have some really good news.’
‘What’s that?’ Hermione asked, trying to push him away but he wasn’t budging.
‘I was talking to Susan Bones, Weasley, whatever her name is now, and she was talking about how they’ve been called multiple times to the same house for cases of accidental magic on Muggle items.’
‘Okay,’ Hermione said, sounding confused. ‘That’s her job, isn’t it, the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department?’
‘Yes,’ he said. ‘But they keep getting called to this same house because it’s foster parents of a young girl, who is a muggle-born witch. Because it’s not the real parents or even adoptive parents, the ministry has declared that they can’t know about magic, so Susan has to keep going to wipe their memories and tell the girl to stop getting upset and using her magic.’
Hermione was still shaking her head, not understanding why this was such good news. Sarah didn’t understand either.
‘I phoned up the Muggle social services, and if you want, we can meet her this weekend.’
‘Meet who?’ Hermione said. ‘What does this have to do with Magical Creatures?’
‘It doesn’t,’ he said with a smile. ‘I’m talking about us, Granger. You and I can go meet this girl and…’ he paused, looking at her intently. ‘And see if we want to adopt her.’
‘What?’ she asked softly.
‘She’s four,’ he said. ‘She’s been to multiple foster families and the ministry cannot do anything because she won’t be with them permanently. She needs someone that can help her understand her magic and help her feel like she’s not alone.’
Hermione was looking up at him, but Sarah couldn’t see the expression on her face.
‘We can do that, Hermione. We can give her a home, a family. We can show her how to channel her strengths and use them properly,’ he was speaking passionately but then calmed and put his hand on Hermione’s cheek. ‘We could be parents,’ he said softly and Sarah heard Hermione’s breath catch in her throat. ‘Do you want to meet her?’ he asked.
Hermione nodded her head. ‘What’s her name?’ she asked.
‘Ruby,’ Malfoy said with a smile. He dropped his head down to give Hermione another kiss. This time she responded enthusiastically, obviously forgetting about the door being open and things got quite heated quite quickly. Sarah was breathing heavily watching them kiss and touch each other with abandon. She was looking down at Malfoy’s hand spreading across Hermione’s lower back and pulling her against himself, but then her eyes flew back up to their faces when she saw a motion in her peripheral vision. Malfoy had stopped kissing Hermione and was staring straight at Sarah. Catching her eye, he brought his hand up and made a motion for her to shut the door.
She breathed deeply and stumbled to grab the door handle and pull it closed.
Ruddy fucking pumpkin juice is right, she thought. She knew her friends were just being silly saying that the two of them would never be together. She had even shared another suspicion with them when Hermione had come back from a two-week holiday about seven months ago now, but they had convinced her that that was also a daft idea.
Hermione and Malfoy had attended several Ministry functions together over the last few years, but it always seemed like it was in a platonic way—and everyone just assumed that they had become quite good friends while working together and had no one else that they were serious enough about to attend with.
If it wasn’t for Harry Potter’s outburst in the hall that day, Sarah would probably be none-the-wiser as well. Until today, she had never actually seen any proof of anything more between them. Unfortunately, her friends would still probably not believe her.
A little while later, the door opened and Malfoy walked out. ‘See you next week, Miss Granger,’ he said in a professional tone, though he had a wicked smirk on his face. When the door was closed again, he turned and sighed, putting his hands on Sarah’s desk, bending slightly to look at her. ‘I would prefer if this just stayed between us,’ he said, and she nodded distractedly. ‘Wouldn’t want to upset my wife now, would we?’
Sarah’s eyes flicked down to the platinum band on his left ring finger and her suspicion was finally confirmed. That band had shown up on his finger in the same week that Hermione’s thin white gold band had appeared on hers when she had returned from her holiday last summer. Sarah was not from a Muggle family, but she knew of this tradition. When she had mentioned it to her friends, they had brushed it off. ‘Malfoy, in a Muggle marriage? With Hermione Granger?’ and even she thought it had sounded like a ridiculous idea by the end of the night.
She looked back up at his face and he gave her a wink before standing and walking away down the hall.
0000000000
It was Friday night, and they had just ordered a takeaway. Draco sat at one side of the sofa in the lounge of the house that he and Hermione had purchased together a few years ago. He had his arm draped across the back of the sofa, his fingers playing with a few strands of Hermione’s beautiful, wild hair. Hermione was fumbling with the remote to start the film.
Ruby, now five, sat between them, cross-legged with a stuffed unicorn on her lap, smiling in anticipation for the animated film that she had asked to watch. Draco smiled. He never thought that his life would turn out like this. Never thought that he would one day love two Muggle-born witches.
When it had gotten out that Hermione had planned to adopt a child, there had been a witch from ‘Witch Weekly’ that had wanted to do an article on her. When Hermione surmised from the first interview that the woman thought that Hermione was a lonely cat woman who had given up on love and decided to just adopt a child instead (v brave, the witch had said), Hermione had basically told her to go and get her story straight.
It seemed that even though he and Hermione spent quite a bit of time in Diagon Alley and Ministry Parties and other places together, it was assumed that they were only friends. When Hermione had tried to explain to the witch that she was married, and that it was a Muggle marriage with himself, the witch had actually laughed at her. The more Hermione had fought the point, the less the witch believed her.
The fact that Hermione had chosen to keep her own last name despite being married was what the witch could not believe the most. Why wouldn’t she want to be Mrs Malfoy? Draco laughed at this. She was Hermione Granger, and he could not imagine her being anything else.
The witch hadn’t believed Draco either when he corroborated Hermione’s story. She now believed that he was just helping his friend not be embarrassed about her lie. Why would he want to adopt a child with her instead of just having one of their own—unless it was only a platonic relationship.
The solution had finally presented itself when he and Hermione had been walking into the Ministry with hundreds of other witches and wizards during the busiest time just before everyone’s shift started and he had seen the witch close by. He had grabbed Hermione by the arm and pulled her into him for what was the most public snog of their entire relationship. Nearly everyone in the hall had stopped to stare at what was happening and as Draco pulled away from the kiss, looking into Hermione wide and lust-filled eyes, a murmur started.
Suddenly there was a loud and sarcastic voice next to them. ‘For fuck’s sake. Can’t you two keep it in your pants for like five minutes?’ It was Potter. He and Weasley had made their way over to see what the commotion was.
‘I mean, really, can’t you just wait until you get home?’ Weasley said, also purposefully loud. They were both smirking. Hermione had been very vocal about how annoyed she was getting with no one believing her and having these two not only confirm the relationship but seeming to be unfazed by it, squashed any other doubt that it was in fact real.
After that, the witch begged for another interview. Hermione interviewed with the Daily Prophet instead, explaining her sickness and the fact that they could not have children, but also that they wanted to give this girl a childhood that was full of magic, instead of being punished for it.
It had taken several months and quite a few visits with Ruby before they were finally able to bring her home. Draco remembered the first visit. He had asked her what kinds of things she liked. ‘Unicorns and Mermaids,’ was her answer. He had shuddered and said, ‘Unicorns yes, mermaids, maybe not so much,’ to the girl’s confusion.
When the social worker had left the room to answer a phone call, Hermione had said softly, almost conspiratorially, ‘Are you special, Ruby? Can you make things happen?’ and when she had responded with a nod, Hermione had pulled out her wand and conjured some fire in her hand. At Ruby’s widened eyes, Hermione had said, ‘So are we.’
Seeing them now, Ruby leaning back and snuggling into Hermione a bit, Draco was pleased that they were able to find a way for Hermione to be able to be a mother. He could see the sadness in her eyes sometimes, especially when they visited their friends who had children. She was great with them, but always seemed disheartened afterwards and when he had been talking to Susan that day and she mentioned a Muggle-born witch in foster care, Draco just knew what he needed to do.
Not that it was without its challenges. Obviously with a five-year-old in the house, they couldn’t quite shag on every single surface that they had been able to in the past, but Hermione’s parents and even his parents, who all adored Ruby, took to watching her enough that they still had enough alone time to keep up a pretty healthy sex life.
His favourite time of year was early June, not only for his birthday which Hermione always made memorable, but also for the Ministry Gala. After that first time in the dark alcove under the stairs, it had become almost tradition for them to meet up just as the awards were winding down and the dancing was starting and everyone was a bit drunk, for him to push her roughly against that wall and fuck her so hard that she couldn’t stand. Though he remembered to cast a silencing charm each time after the first—he loved hearing her scream his name.
It had also been just before they had brought Ruby home that Charlie Weasley had visited them for the last time. It had been every few months to begin with and as their relationship got more serious, it had spread out to only every six months or so. After they had gotten married, on the beach in a tiny little cove in Cornwall with only their closest friends and family around, they had only seen Charlie once more in a romantic way as he had then finally found someone that he felt like he wanted to settle down with.
When she had arrived at a Weasley family gathering, Draco and Hermione had recognised her as one of the red-headed friends of Kelly’s at the Romanian Reserve. Apparently, they had never really seen anything in each other—Charlie was older and too rough-looking for her and Isla was too young and naïve for Charlie, but when they had been forced to spend three weeks together in an observation pod because there was a pair of mating dragons just outside it, the closeness and the pheromones had gotten the better of them and they had been inseparable ever since.
But honestly, Draco didn’t really mind. He was happy and content with what he had with Hermione and though it had been fun to have Charlie around for a while, it was never meant to be a long-term arrangement.
Draco smiled again, watching the animated characters bounce across the screen and knew that he needed to start paying attention, because he now had two witches that would debate with him on the merits of the film when it finished. Ruby snuggled in closer to both of them and sighed softly and said, ‘Love you guys.’
His eyes met Hermione’s over Ruby's head and he watched as tears of happiness shone in her beautiful brown orbs. It was the first time Ruby had said that, and they both cuddled her close and Hermione said, ‘We love you, too.’
Draco’s heart felt full seeing Hermione so happy. And he thought to himself that he was still waiting. Waiting for the day that she stopped being interesting and sexy to him, that he didn’t want to be around her every minute of every day.
But that day had yet to come.
