AUTHOR'S NOTE: Whoa, sorry for the lack of update, guys. Time just ran away from me! In any case, here's yet another twist in the wild ride that is this story. Here's what so many have been waiting for ... SHOPPING!!! Well, the start of it, anyway. Also, SNAPE being his own snarky self!! YAY! So, see y'all next time! :::SMOOCH!:::
Snape blinked in the dimness of the antechamber he had just portkeyed into. He really didn't want to be here, at least not until he had the protection of the vampires' blood to shield him from prying minds, but he dare not ignore the Call.
The previous meeting had not been an enjoyable one, even if his Master's ire had been thrown onto someone else. Voldemort did not take the news that Draco Malfoy had been removed from Hogwarts and hidden away very well. However, even though Snape claimed to not know where the boy was, he was not to be blamed.
It was all Lucius Malfoy's fault. Apparently, there had been an actual plan set up when he had escaped. Originally, he was supposed to go into hiding alone, allowing Narcissa to pick Draco up at King's Cross. Then, they would join him. However, he had his own insane ideas, and decided they could just leave the boy behind.
Voldemort was more than a little upset at his General for this lack of sense. He let it be known that he had plans for Draco, though he did not let on as to what those plans might be. It was enough to alarm Snape though. He didn't tell anyone about that little tidbit, however. He felt that Draco was going through more than enough at the moment. But it did cause him to be much more wary ... even more so after Draco's death.
Snape now did his best to close up his mind, hoping it would be enough to prevent the Dark Lord from finding out everything that had happened since the last meeting. He straightened his cloak and his mask and made for the door that would lead into the main chamber. However, he was prevented by a delicate hand on his arm. He spun to find familiar blue eyes.
"Narcissa," he murmured. He noticed there was fear and worry in those eyes. Such a contrast to the cold ice he would usually find there.
"Have you found him?" she asked, her voice wavering. She seemed on the verge of tears.
Warning klaxons went off in his head. Something was very wrong. He knew that Narcissa loved her son, but she was never affectionate, to the point that many believed she didn't care for the boy at all. She certainly wouldn't have been so afraid for him.
Snape took a moment to consider his actions before answering. "Yes," he said quietly, and was rewarded with a gasp and a tear.
"Is he alright? Has he been hurt?"
"No. He's back at the school."
She sighed with obvious relief. Though she didn't like Dumbledore any more than her husband did, she knew that Hogwarts was the safest place for her son. She nodded. "Good. Is he ... angry?" She looked at him with hope now.
"Yes, Narcissa. He is extremely angry. Cissa, I fear ..."
"Don't say I've lost him," she now begged. "Please don't tell me that. I couldn't bear ..."
"Narcissa!" boomed another voice. Lucius strode forward quickly, not trusting Snape around his wife. He remembered how the Potions Master had been close friends with not only her, but several others he cared not to think about. "There you are, dear." He made a show of gently kissing the hood of her cloak as he wrapped his arms around her.
Snape snorted at the territorial display. It also served to cover his amazement at how quickly the woman went from Concerned Mother to Cold-Hearted Death Eater. All signs of worry or tears were gone, and in their place stood the Ice Queen she had made herself to be for the past eighteen years.
"Is the meeting about to begin?" she asked, her voice now even.
"Yes, we should go in."
Snape merely nodded in acknowledgement and followed them through the door. He suppressed a shiver, as the temperature inside the main chamber seemed much colder than the outer room. He distanced himself from the Malfoys and tried to blend into the gathered crowd.
He snorted again, marveling at the uselessness of the masks Voldemort forced his followers to wear, even to these meetings. Snape knew exactly who each and every person present was, simply by their build, their stance, their nervous movement. Should they speak, or should he get close enough to look them in the eyes, it would be even easier. True, they did grant a certain amount of anonymity when in public, but it was senseless to have to wear them within a closed gathering. Ah, but his Master was quite insane, so Snape decided it would be best not to think too much on it, lest he go down the same path.
Instead, he sighed and waited for the Grand High Overlord of Madness and Astounding Stupidity (at least, that's what Snape called him in the private sectors of his mind) to arrive. He knew without a doubt that he would be asked whether he had discovered where Draco had gotten to. He already had his story all laid out. Hopefully, Voldemort would buy it.
It was about five minutes before a great hissing was heard, and the Death Eaters on the far side of the room began stumbling back, away from another door. Nagini had arrived. Snape detested that serpent with a passion. It sickened him to see such a beautiful and noble creature become so twisted and corrupted. A vague thought of the basilisk that had been hidden away in the Chamber of Secrets came to mind. After all, they were no more inherently evil than any common garden snake.
Suddenly, the energy in the room changed, forcing the Potions Master to put away any frivolous musings. Lord Voldemort made his way through his followers in Nagini's wake, not granting any of them a second glance. He soon took his seat in an old armchair-turned-throne (somehow, the man was convinced it was of gilded gold) and cleared his throat. "Well," he began, his high-pitched voice grating on every last one of Snape's nerves. He didn't continue for a few moments. "Well," he repeated, "I am hoping someone has some good news for me this time. Severus?"
Snape wanted to cry out, "Why me?!" but opted against it. Instead, he played the part of a good little Death Eater and made his way through the others to kneel at his Lord's feet so he could kiss the hem of his ridiculously expensive yet poorly maintained robes. I love my life, Snape thought sarcastically as he waited for Voldemort to speak again.
"What news do you bring from the school?"
"You will be pleased, my Lord. Draco Malfoy has returned."
A murmur swept through the crowd at this. "Silence!" Voldemort ordered. Once the chamber was quiet, he turned back to Snape. "Have you been able to determine where he had been hidden?"
"No, my Lord. Dumbledore still refuses to tell me, and the boy himself is reluctant to."
"Well, if you can't get the old man to budge, perhaps you can still get it out of young Malfoy."
Snape nodded. "I agree, Lord. He is still rather upset by the abandonment he's faced, so it should be easy to gain his trust if I present myself as the concerned Head of House."
"Very good."
"However, it has crossed my mind that he may be under magickal obligation not to reveal his hiding place, and there is no telling what the consequences of breaking that obligation would be." He was bargaining on the fact that, though he wasn't sure what Voldemort had planned for Draco, he was sure the Dark Lord didn't want the young Slytherin to come to any harm. Luckily, he was right.
"Ah, you are wise, Severus. Proceed with utmost caution. If he is under magickal obligation, do not force him. I have plans for that child, and I wish no harm to come to him."
Too late, Snape thought in a sing-song tone and resisted the urge to giggle. Oh, if Voldemort only knew. However, he was brought back to reality by the realization that Voldemort had once again mentioned plans. "My Lord, if I may inquire, what plans do you have for Malfoy?"
A dead silence hung over the chamber. A Death Eater had the gall to question the Dark Lord. Snape braced himself for the repercussions of his curiosity. But, he had to know. How could he protect his godson if he didn't know what to protect him from? Thinking quickly, he amended, "I only ask so that I may better serve you. If there is anything I can do to prepare him for these plans ..."
"I understand your reason for asking, and I assure you that if I thought there was anything you could do to help, I would have told you."
"Of course, my Lord."
"Good. Is there anything else of import you need to tell me?"
"Only that the werewolf is once again teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. But aside from that, there is nothing."
"Very well. You may rejoin your peers."
Peers my eye, Snape thought. Only about a quarter -- a third if he was feeling particularly charitable, which at the moment he wasn't -- had any brains to speak of, much less at his intellectual level. Not to mention, how many of them were spies? But, he did as he was told nonetheless.
"Now, an announcement," Voldemort said. "The time is drawing near for us to take the Wizarding world back from the Mudbloods. As we speak, a ritual is being built that will grant me even more power. However, it is slow-going, but I am nothing if not patient. It should be ready by the end of the upcoming school year. By the end of the year following, we will take the school. Once that has been conquered, we will be unstoppable.
"Therefore, those of you who have children attending Hogwarts, I want you to prepare them. I want them to be my eyes and ears within the school. They are to report to you every week, and you to me. I am especially interested in Potter, of course, as well as young Malfoy. No, Lucius," Voldemort said, holding up a thin hand to stop the Death Eater's protest. "I sincerely don't believe he will be contacting you himself. After all, you did abandon him. Severus will act as my link to the boy."
Snape was pleased as Lucius became rather flustered ... bordering on indignant really. One more nudge, and the man might go off. It had been a month or so since the last time he had suffered under the Cruciatus; he was due. However, the blonde held his tongue, much to Snape's disappointment. Ah well, Snape thought with a sigh. Perhaps next time.
"If anything seems ... out of the ordinary regarding Malfoy -- his demeanor, his appearance, anything -- they are to tell you immediately. Your children will also be our inside agents when we siege the castle. Prepare them.
"That is all for now. You are all dismissed."
As the crowd dispersed, Snape couldn't help but feel that the ritual the Dark Lord had mentioned was meant for Draco. William will not be pleased, he thought as he activated his port key.
Draco was surprised to discover that the group would be spending two full days in London. The first day, they were going to go shopping in the Muggle section, which pleased him greatly. He had developed something of an addiction to Muggle things over the past few months, and had started up quite a collection.
He was greatly amused by board games, and wondered why on earth the Wizarding world hadn't caught on. I mean, what self-respecting Slytherin wouldn't want to play RISK or Monopoly? Heck, if he had his way, they would be a requirement for every pure-blood child, as training for adulthood!
He had also learned a few games using Muggle cards. Though they didn't explode, they were still fun. He was frightfully good at poker. War was entertaining, too, especially when you used more than one deck, had more than two people, and the removal of clothing was involved (or so he had heard from Faith). Then there was one that used special cards called Uno, which could get frustrating with only three people and trying to remember which way the turns were going.
He was enthralled by electronics. He marveled at Angel's stereo and had begun his own collection of CD's. Of course, he didn't know who any of the artists were or what they're music sounded like. He just bought albums based on interesting titles and covers. If he liked the music, he bought more from that group. He enjoyed Evanescence quite a bit, as well as Linkin Park, and he of course had to listen to David Bowie. The others at Angel Investigations shared their favorites as well, and Draco's tastes in music became quite eclectic. He was only sorry that he wouldn't be able to listen to any of it at school.
Despite Dumbledore's promises, no one had gotten in contact with them about working with Fred to develop magickally-run electronics. None of them were surprised. In fact, when McGonagall spoke to Arthur Weasley (the only person she could think of who would not only have the ability but would be interested), he sadly informed her that Dumbledore thought it would be best he not risk his position at the Ministry.
Luckily, Draco, being the cunning Slytherin that he was, had an idea.
An idea that would have to wait until tomorrow, because Dawn was now dragging him into a glittery-girly boutique. He should have never told her he was attracted to shiny objects.
"Why are we in here?" he asked, looking around with no small amount of trepidation. He might like boys, but he was quite masculine, thank you very much.
"Well, I want to buy some nice hair things and stuff. If I'm going to be a teacher, I need to look good, right?"
"Yeah. Okay, let me rephrase that, then. Why am I in here?"
"Because you didn't put up a fight when I dragged you," she responded with a smirk. "Oh, look, Draco!" she cooed, holding up a faux silver bracelet. "Shiny!"
He growled at her, but it only caused her to giggle.
"Oh, calm down, Dray. If it helps any, you are by far the prettiest thing in here."
"Damn straight." He sighed and began meandering, trying to stave off the impending headache due to the mass amounts of bright pink in the store. "I never took you as the girly type."
Dawn snorted. "Most people don't, because usually I'm not. I'm too busy doing other wacky things, like saving the world. Which one: butterflies, or dragonflies?" she asked suddenly, holding up two placards, each holding six barrettes.
Draco cringed slightly. He had only known this girl little more than two weeks, and already she knew his weaknesses. Fashion was one of them. "Dragonflies. Butterflies are lovely, but they're so ... flighty. Dragonflies don't bounce around in the air, they just go straight to where they're going. And they can hover. Two things you're good at."
"I do not hover! I observe," she said coolly, putting the butterfly barrettes back on the rack.
"You keep telling yourself that; someday you may just believe it."
Dawn then stuck her tongue out at him and giggled again.
"You know, if you're going to be a teacher, you may want to stop doing that. Especially with me. I mean, they might start talking."
Dawn gaped a moment before playfully thwapping him on the arm. "Draco Whatever-the-Hell-Your-Middle-Name-Is Malfoy! You behave!"
"Now, Dawn, what kind of Slytherin would I be if I did that?" he asked innocently.
"A damn boring one," she answered.
He chuckled, then asked if she was nervous about teaching. She admitted she was, and still couldn't fathom why Giles would even suggest such a thing. It was clear to Draco that she had been pushed aside so much and for so long by her sister and Willow that it had damaged her self-esteem. "You'll do fine," he assured her.
Apparently, she didn't buy it. "No one ever listens to me, though! It's like I don't exist!"
"Really? Because, I'm listening to you right now."
She huffed and crossed her arms. "You know what I mean."
"Yeah, I do," he assented. He then took her by the shoulders and made her look him in the eye. "But you're not there anymore. We haven't been ignoring you, have we?" She shook her head. "And Angel tells me you're the one who discovered that hair from one of the spiders, and that one of the protective symbols was altered. He listened to you then, didn't he?"
"Well, yeah ..."
"And when you told us all about making your portal?" She nodded. "You're going to have to learn that we're not all like Buffy and Willow and the other little Slayers. And personally, I think you'll make a fabulous teacher. You're closer to our age, so you'll know how to catch our attention better. Just keep in mind that very few of your students will have any idea about Muggles. You'll have to do a lot of extra explaining, but I'll help where I can, and I dare say you should call on Potter and Granger as much as possible, as both spend their summers in the Muggle world."
"Right," she said, nodding to herself. "Know what? You're right. I'll do just fine. If I can translate a spell from Turkish and that Slayer book that Robin gave to Buffy by myself, and create a goddamn portal, I can teach about Muggles."
"Precisely," he said, giving her a quick hug. "Now, are we done in here? Please?"
Dawn glanced around to see if there was anything else she might want. She then gasped and raced over to a display. Peg after peg was loaded with packs of jelly bracelets in assorted colors.
"Okay, and the big deal about these would be ...?" Draco asked as he joined her.
"Sex bracelets!" she said in an amused whisper.
Draco's eyes grew wide. "Is this a Muggle thing?" She nodded. "Well, then teach me!"
She laughed at his reaction before saying, "Well, they're not really made as sex bracelets. It's kind of a game in some areas of the States. I dunno if they do it over here. In any case, each color represents a different act. It can be as simple as a hug or holding hands, or it could be full-blown sex. Different areas have different meanings. I'd have to look it up. But, if you're wearing one, and someone comes along and snaps it off your wrist ... see here?" she asked, holding up one of the packs. "See this seam? This is where it usually breaks. Anyway, whatever color that bracelet is, you have to do what that color represents to or for the person who breaks it."
"Brilliant!" he cried as he took the pack from her.
"There are other games you can play, like tug-of-war and stuff."
"I could make a killing off of these at school!"
Dawn grew nervous. "Uh, Draco, do you think that's a good idea? I mean, don't they kinda frown on that whole having sex while on school grounds thing? What if you got caught?"
"My dear, I am a Slytherin. I don't get caught." He continued to inspect the simple bracelets as he asked, "How can one be sure that the wearer will make good on it?"
Dawn shrugged. "Honor system, I guess."
Draco snorted. "Yeah, like that will work at Hogwarts. If only there was a way to make it magickally binding ..." His face lit up. "And I know just who to talk to about it! If anyone can make these more interesting ..." he muttered as he wandered toward the front counter to buy the bracelets.
"What have I done?" Dawn whimpered.
TO MY REVIEWERS
Dassani: EEEK!!! So long, no review! How have you been? Good I hope. Anyhoo, I have seen many a fic where Xan's hyena is a female. I'll be going back an looking at the episode eventually (I heart my DVDs). If it is female, then I can take care of it, and I won't even have to edit! In fact, it would play wonderfully into my plans. Ah, the cleverness of me.
TP: Definitely going to have a pool, eventually. Xander's possession is barely ever mentioned in the series, and I think it is just an excellent theme to explore. It just adds even more depth to him. He and Lupin are going to become close, but I'm not sayin' HOW close. And yes, I love Boy!Blaise, too. Especially this one. Just ... keep him away from ropes ...
Vigilante: At the end of the series, Connor was actually quite cool. He was a perfect blend of the normal kid that was a result of the memory manipulation and of Angel's son. He wasn't shut off emotionally, he was caring, and he actually had a wicked sense of humor. To paraphrase one of my fave interactions between Connor and Angel in the last episode:
ANGEL: What are you doing?
CONNOR: Making my resume.
ANGEL: Can I help?
CONNOR: Do you know anything about resumes?
ANGEL: :::pause::: I have nice handwriting.
CONNOR: :::mock glare::: You're such a girl.
And DUDE!!! I thought I was the only one who ever said that anymore!! Yes, an art room. So, if you're an artist, WHY haven't you drawn anything for me??!! :P Right now, the class subjects will remain as they are, though there will eventually be changes in that, as well.
ValkyrieNiennaHelyanwe: This story arc will not be Harry/Draco. Doesn't mean it won't happen eventually. Just, not in this particular story. I can say that he will become a member of the Order of Angelus, though I won't say how at the moment (there ARE several ways). And Angel has always taken in the misfits and outcasts, it seems. Even in the actual series. I kinda like that about him. Yes, Harry WOULD make a sexy vamp ... he'll make a sexy kitty-boy, too, but you'll DEFINITELY have to wait for that. As for Harry's appearance, it will be soon ... in a chapter or two, actually. If I'm not mistaken. As for the Twins, you'll be seeing them soon too. They won't be vampified (at least, that's not in the plans at the moment), but they will be up to no good. But then, they're the TWINS. I had planned on a music room and an inter-house lounge. As for electronics ... :::shifty gaze::: just keep reading.
FlashBang: Blaise/Draco will be fun. As I said, there might be some Harry/Draco later on in the series. But I promise, it won't be cheesy ... and probably not like any other fic. Besides, I plan on making him more ... believable. Thanks for the warning about the renovations. It's honestly not something I thought about. So, I'll be doing it bit by bit. The things that will directly benefit the school will come first, and the other fun things will come later.
LissaRiddle: I cannot be held responsible for my patron's actions. That's all I have to say. :P
Silver1: It just seemed that a friendship between Lupin and Xander made SENSE, you know? And I agree, as much as they explored Xander's character on the series, there was still so much left. Yeah, Remus snarfing is amusing. Good thing it wasn't pop, or the bubbles woulda gone up his nose! Xander will be paired up with someone, and I promise it will be a good one for him. As for Xander being straight ... Willow seemed straight till she met Tara. It may just be that Xan hasn't met a guy he could really feel for yet. And I have NO IDEA how many more chapters are going to be in this particular story. I can tell you that it will be long, though.
Warconq: Xander really could kick ass. I mean, he's been there from the beginning; it would have been impossible for him to have NOT picked SOMEthing up. As for Fred and Faith, no plans in the romance department for either of them at the moment.
Sailor Black 666: I am a Buffyphile, and I pride myself on my knowledge of all things Buffy/Angel. As for Harry Potter, I will admit I knew very little when I first started writing this. I hadn't even read the books (didn't have the $$$ for them). My Beta, Aimee, is also my Official Harry Potter Consultant. She not only is learned about the books, but the movies and various interviews with JKR as well. So, if I ever have a question, I know I can ask her. And yes, I HAVE read the books since then (my cousin let me borrow his). :) There is a definite process to killing Angelian vampires permanently, and beheading (which dusts them) is the first step. If I told you any more, I'd have to kill you. ;) Shopping will begin next chapter. :)
