Chapter 19: Loyalty is for the Dog
September 16th,
Tuesday
Draco sat with Harry staring
across the courtyard at Sirius and Eris who were discussing some book or
other. “Are you sure we should keep this
up?”
“Keep what up,” Harry mumbled, not even
bothering to look up from his Potions text.
“Letting those two spend so much time alone
together,” Draco said through gritted teeth.
“What if he accidentally does or says something that sets her off? Then what?”
Harry sighed and offered him an
exasperated look. “How alone can they be
when we’re only...what…thirty feet away?
Their hardly ever out of someone’s
line of sight. People are always ferreting about.”
Draco cocked a brow at his
companion’s less than subtle insinuations.
“Spying is he? And does your
sister know that she’s under surveillance?”
“Well, she certainly knows that you and Ginny
have been following her about. Ron is
hardly any better. Hermione is
constantly dragging that pair off in some other direction.”
“And you’re here to keep me in check then,”
Draco said, his eyes narrowing. “I
thought that you were actually beginning to enjoy my company.”
Harry went back to his book. “I don’t mind you when you’re not obsessing
over my sister. It’s also not exactly
safe for you to be alone in the school.
You could hang with Blaise and Greg if you want.”
Draco sighed and looked off to a
patch of fallen leaves. “Blaise is on
the prowl, and therefore too busy for friendly visits, and Greg has
been…quieter than usual.”
Harry snorted. “I was under the impression that he never
said much to begin with. He lost his
best mate, Draco. Give the man some
time. As long as he doesn’t seem
self-destructive, I wouldn’t worry. I’ve
noticed him speaking with Eris quite a bit, if that makes you feel any better.”
“I guess,” Draco said bitterly.
Harry suddenly stood and tossed
his book in his bag. “If you’re that
desperate for her company then just go over there. You know she won’t send you away. Sirius might get his feathers in a ruffle,
but I’ll deal with him. Anything’s
better than seeing you so miserable.”
Draco watched dumbly as Harry
began to march away. He spared one
glance for Eris and Sirius, but determined that they were quite alright with
each other. The important thing was that
Harry actually seemed to give a damn and was in need of some attention. Far be it for Draco Malfoy to deny his
personal, green eyed demon anything he desired.
________________________________________________________________________
As it
turned out Harry was quite correct in his assessment that there was another
spying on Eris. Draco was not the only
one feeling a bit neglected by the girl.
Severus was also feeling left out in the cold. The difference between himself and the young
Malfoy being that he really had no one else to turn to for companionship and
comfort. Minerva would be willing to
talk, of course, but the poor woman was busy enough. Lupin would attempt to converse with him at
every opportunity, but he was only beginning to tolerate the wizard. He couldn’t stand that obnoxious Green
chit. The children were out of the
question…though Granger could at least hold a decent debate if that was what he
was looking for. Who did that leave for
him, the elves? Tahdei
was single minded in his pursuit of properly preparing both him and the
twins. Naiya…well
Naiya was a strange bit of baggage and he rather
preferred avoiding her. He didn’t like
the way she looked at Eris and he hated the way he knew she was encouraging the
girl to chose her mate before she’d properly assessed her potentials.
He figured that in a perfect world
(or at least a normal elven mentor-charge situation)
he would have had many years of the young woman’s company to himself. There would have been a great deal more time
to get to know her better, to help heal and prepare her for a true
relationship, and to allow his only feelings for her to mature, settle, and
become certain. As he watched Black and
Eris interact, he found himself feeling glad that the girl was finally willing
to be close to her potential. At the
same time, he wished that they were in a normal situation where he could hang
closely (and visibly) by, basically being allowed to become a part of the
relationship.
He was wondering more and more if
Black would every willingly be part to a triad that he was a corner in. There was a certainty deep inside of him that
said Eris would happily welcome him…she’d said as much herself before, but what
would the cost of trying be? His fate
was rather uncertain at the moment as he was generally viewed as a traitor to
the side of light. When the time came
and he showed his true colors on the battle field the Death Eaters would be
after his blood as well. All in all,
life would probably be easier for all parties involved if he simply died in the
final battle, but he felt cold at the idea of the pain it would cause Eris and
Harry. The male Potter specimen was not
yet overly fond of him, but the nature of their bond would still cause him both
emotional and physically pain if Severus died.
Severus shook his little, ferret
head and cleared it of all his morbid thoughts.
Eris let out a soft chuckle then and he looked around. Seeing that Black and Eris were the only
students present, he slipped from his hiding place and dashed to curl up in
Eris’ lap. The girl let out a surprised
squeak, but quickly busied herself petting him gently.
“Poor Nox, did you
miss me?” Eris cooed quietly. “I’m sorry
you’re alone so much. I can try and
spend more of my free time in the common room if you want.”
Severus nipped her finger gently
and shook his furry head. He wouldn’t
deny her fresh air while the weather was still so pleasant.
That was
when Black reached out and gently scratched his head with one finger. Reminding himself that he needed to keep up
good relations with the disguised man, Severus chose not to bite his finger
off. “Hello there, Nox. Eris and I were reading through a few history
books looking for possible targets.”
Severus let out what he hoped
sounded like reproachful chatter. Black
was being awfully stupid, saying things like that aloud where anyone could hear
him. Never mind that they wouldn’t
understand.
“Easy, old man,” Black said with a chuckle. “Harry taught me nifty spell that’s supposed
to keep everyone else from nosing in. Says he learned it from you actually.”
Severus calmed immediately. They were employing the Muffliato spell.
Perhaps Black wasn’t a complete idiot after all.
Black scratched his head again
then. “You’re such a cute little fella, aren’t you?”
Severus gave the “boy’s” hand a
nice, hard nip. Perhaps he could be
wrong.

September 20th, Saturday
Harry had just caught himself
staring fondly at Draco for what had to be the hundredth time that week. He really needed to stop. Ginny and Ron kept giving him smug, knowing
looks. Luckily, Eris and Sirius were too
busy with each other to really notice his behavior. His only true ally had to be Hermione, who
had taken on the policy of being Swiss where relationship teasing was
concerned. She’d confided to Harry that
she was worried that teasing either him or Eris would be too detrimental to
their potential relationships with how difficult a time they both had
adjusting. That and she wanted everyone
to leave her alone about her romance with Ron.
Draco nudged him then. “I wanted to ask you something.”
Harry frowned. The blond looked rather unsure. “Well, go ahead then.”
“Would you be offended if I wanted to know
what other potentials you’ve come across,” Draco asked quietly.
He thought about that for a
moment. There had only been three, none
of whom he considered for more than a moment.
One of them was Seamus Finnegan, and as he knew his Gryffindor friend
was straight (how couldn’t he with the way the Irishman drooled over Eris) he
didn’t even give him a second thought.
Another was some Ravenclaw fifth year, whose name Harry could not
recall. He was a good looking boy, but
Harry didn’t think he would mix well with a bookish Ravenclaw and he much
preferred to choose a mate he’d at least know a little bit before hand.
“No, I suppose not,” Harry said with a kind
smile. “There have been three, but only
one who I gave any consideration too.”
Draco cocked his head to the side. “I didn’t think you’d be overly picky…well…I
mean. Oh bugger, I meant that I didn’t
think you’d be…er…snobbish enough to cross them off
your list so quickly.”
Harry chuckled. “It wasn’t like that really. Its just that one was a classmate who I know
for a fact it quite straight and I didn’t have the foggiest idea who the other
one was.”
“Who’s the one you’re thinking about then,”
Draco asked timidly. Harry wasn’t sure
he liked this kind of behavior from the Slytherin.
“Was
considering, Draco. I ruled her
out.” Harry sighed. “It was Susan Bones. She’s a nice girl. Sweet, quiet, and gentle from what I’ve
seen. I respect her family quite a
bit. It’s just that…I don’t know…she’s a
bit too docile for me I guess. I’d be
terrified of something happening to her because she was too fragile. Does that make any sense? I mean, I’m sure I’ll feel that way about any
mate I take simply out of instinct and the genuine affection that’s sure to
rise.”
“Maybe that was your instinct trying to warn
you that while Bones is compatible to you physically and magically there’s
something in her emotionally that couldn’t cope,” Draco offered helpfully.
Harry nodded. “That makes sense.”
He looked back to Draco and saw that the blond
still seemed rather uncertain. “What is
it, Draco?”
“Does that mean you’d prefer a girl,” Draco
blurted out and then blushed in a rather charming way. (Harry simply didn’t know where such thoughts
kept coming from.)
“No, actually I’d already established that I’d
be best off with a man,” Harry said firmly.
“I’m not quite accustomed to the idea yet, but I’m definitely more
attracted to masculine qualities.”
“Well there it is then,” Draco said
nonchalantly, his composure seemingly fully restored. “You weren’t attracted to her. Bones is a rather feminine specimen.”
“She’s perfectly attractive,” Harry snapped,
feeling the need to defend his potential, even if it was from another one of
his choices.
“Of course she is, Harry,” Draco said
soothingly, “but she’s not your type.
Just because you’re not attracted to her doesn’t mean that there’s
anything wrong with her. You’re not
required to lust after every lovely specimen of humanity that comes your way.”
Harry smirked. “No, that’s your job.”
Draco sniffed. “See if I try to make you feel better again
any time soon.”

September 21st, Sunday
Eris stood up from the common room
couch and stretched. She and Sirius had
been working on a Transfiguration essay that was due that Tuesday. Sirius, of course, had wanted to put off
their writing until the next night, but she knew that they would need to be
studying for the surprise quiz that Professor Sprout was sure to spring on them
Tuesday afternoon. The woman was a
wonderful teacher, but a mite too predictable if you took the time to consider
her habits.
Sirius had finished his essay
nearly an hour earlier, refusing to put much effort into his schoolwork beyond
getting A’s. She couldn’t really blame
him. It was his second time around after
all. He was currently flipping through
the history books they’d been spending their spare moments pouring over,
looking for any hint of heirlooms of the founders of Hogwarts. In his position lying on his stomach on the
floor he looked more relaxed than she’d ever really seen him. Sure, he was always joking around and they’d
had their little drinking spree, but he never lacked a certain tense, aura of
control. At this moment he seemed quite
peaceful. It made another barrier within
her fall. To know that he was at least
capable of such a restful…stillness made her feel much better about him.
“Have you found anything,” she asked in a
sleepy tone.
Sirius grunted. “As though I would be so
lucky. Most of these books just
go on about Gryffindor’s sword. There were a couple mentions of Slytherin’s locket, but those don’t do us much good
now. There’s nothing about the cup.”
Eris sighed and looked down at the
coffee table where the small, golden box she’d saved from the tunnels of Grimmauld Place sat. Thought she had confirmed its status as a box
she’d been unable to open it as of yet.
Add to that the fact that Regulus had been strangely absent from her
dreams and…well, she didn’t have much to go on at the
moment. At least she wasn’t having
nightmares. She awoke knowing that
Regulus had not visited, but certain that she’d still had pleasant dreams. It was odd..
Sirius pulled himself up to the
couch then and Eris plopped back down beside him. He gave her a weary smile. “Any luck with you’re
little treasure, sweetheart?”
Eris screwed her nose up in distaste,
but did not comment on his pet name.
She’d tried to fend them off those first few days after their escape
from the tunnels, but he was insistent.
“No, no luck and you’re brother has mysteriously taken his leave.”
Sirius looked concerned. “It’s not my fault is it, because I was being
such a dense git?”
“I doubt it, Siri,”
Eris said with a sigh, not even realizing that she had just employed her own
little pet name. “I’m sure he’ll come
back eventually. Maybe I just need to
figure out how to initiate the sessions now that I’m consciously aware of
them.”
She
turned to look at Sirius then and, though the man was quick to shudder his
gaze, she caught the momentary look of longing in his eyes. He took a deep breath then and Eris felt
rather worried about what he might be bringing up. “Eris…could I…erm…would
you consent to…I would really like to…but if you don’t want to…I’d like it if I
could….”
Eris couldn’t help herself, she
started giggling. Sirius looked a bit
offended. “Oh…oh, Sirius, please don’t
be angry. I just…I just can’t imagine
what has you so worked up.”
She
worked to calm herself and watched as Sirius swallowed hard and tried
again. “Iwannagivuakiss.”
“Er…” Eris paused,
wondering how not to insult her friend and future husband (if fate had its
way). “Could you say that again please?”
“I would like to give you a kiss,” Sirius said
slowly. His speech hurried up again
though when she gave him an uncertain frown.
“Just a small one. A little peck on the cheek really, that’s
all. Nothing serious. Please…”
It was
the slightly pleading tone that got to her, the sound of her one, true mate
seeming so lonely and hopeful. She
swallowed hard and then leaned in close to him.
Shaking off her fear and anxiousness, she gave him a slow, gentle kiss
on the cheek, refusing to allow herself to immediately jerk back. As she pulled away, Sirius turned his face
and ghosted a breath of a kiss across her lips.
She did
jerk a little then, but Sirius look immediately apologetic. “I’m sorry…I just needed…I just…”
Eris sighed and scooted close to
Sirius, placing her head on his shoulder.
“Its okay, Sirius. I do know how
this works.”
“I never thought it would be so bad though,”
Sirius said softly.
Eris felt a pang of guilt at
that. She really needed to tell Sirius
the truth soon. She owed him that much
whether she liked it or not. That was
when Severus stepped out of his lab.
Eris leapt up from the couch with a small whoop of happiness. Her mentor had locked himself away for most
of the day and she’d missed him. Darting
across the room, she jumped into his arms for a deep hug and pulled his head
down to kiss him on both cheeks and then the tip of his nose.
Severus simply shook his head in a
bemused fashion. “Feeling a bit deprived
are we?”
Eris just rolled her eyes. “You work too hard and I felt neglected.”
“Nonsense, precious,” Severus chided. “I’m sure Sirius and the others are perfect
company.”
Eris remembered the man she’d left
on the couch then and slowly pulled away from her mentor. As much as she loved and adored Severus, she
really didn’t want her feelings for him to hurt Sirius. “Of course they are. I just miss our talks sometimes.”
Eris saw the light of
understanding in Severus’ eyes and well as the uncertainty. He knew that she
was referring to all those nights that he had held her until she’d fallen
asleep and all the times he’d been back on her bed kissing and rocking her when
the nightmares came.
“Well, I think I’m going to turn in,” Severus
said with a small yawn. “I promise to
dote on you tomorrow evening if you wish.”
Eris was deeply delighted when he
pulled her in for another hug and kissed the top of her head. He left then for his room and Eris returned
to her seat beside Sirius. She felt a
bit of a chill in his demeanor then, but she supposed she couldn’t blame him.
“Why can you be so free with him,” Sirius
asked harshly. He stood up and looked
down at her with his arms crossed. “With him, with Draco, Remus and Harry. Its all hugs, kisses, and cuddling. Why they get all those things without ever
asking, but I have to trip over my tongue begging for it?”
“I don’t want you to beg, Sirius…its just
different,” Eris said in a pleading tone.
“With Harry and Remus maybe,” he spat. “Hell, maybe even with Draco, but don’t
pretend not to have feelings for Snape.
What is it about me that scares you more than they can? Have I ever done anything to hurt you?”
“Of course not,” Eris said soothingly. She reached out and took his hand, tugging
him back down to the couch. “I can’t
really explain my level of comfort with Severus. If I discover reasons beyond his being my
mentor I promise to tell you. As for the
others…well…they really are different, Sirius.
I don’t have to think of…of…anything
beyond friendly pecks on the cheek and brotherly hugs. I can’t be that way with you. Its…I don’t know…it seems like it would be
starting with the wrong foundation.”
Sirius sighed. “I’ll just learn to deal with it I guess.”
Before Eris could say anything
else, Sirius leaned over and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and dashed for
his dorm room. She could tell that he
was still upset and worried about what the outcome would be.
______________________________________________________________________
September 24th, Wednesday
Draco had to contain his sigh as
he watched Harry walking slightly in front of him. The raven haired young man had been a bit
distant since their last talk. As they
neared the entrance to their dormitories’ common room, the sound of distant
yelling began to reach his ears.
Harry turned to face him. “Do you hear that?”
Draco nodded.
“I think its coming from the common room.”
The pair dashed the rest of the
way down the hall and entered the common room with their wands drawn only to
come upon a rather violent shouting match occurring between Sirius and
Eris. Severus standing in the doorway to
his lab looking fairly worried and Naiya was by his
side. Luckily it seemed that none of
their other dorm mates were present to witness the display, except for Ron who
was the nearest to the pair and seemed to be trying to quell the argument. Draco sighed sadly. It seemed that the short truce was over.
Sirius’ face was red and furious
and his tone was rather savage. “I was
only trying to keep up with you after all.
Merlin knows that I’m the only one who doesn’t receive any affection
from you!”
Eris shrieked. “Sirius, has it occurred to you that someone
like Naiya who ahs spent her entire life surrounded
by wisdom and maturity isn’t going to go for someone like you, who has the
maturity of an eight-year-old hopped up on Pixie Sticks!”
Sirius sneered. “Well, Eris, has it occurred to you that
someone like that, who has spent their life living
within the bounds of strict rules and endless education, needs someone like me
to help make things interesting.”
Draco leaned over and whispered in
Harry’s ear,” Do you get the feeling that their not actually talking about Naiya?”
Harry simply nodded and they
continued to watch the argument.
“Rules are made for a reason and there’s
nothing wrong with putting full effort into one’s education!”
“Some things can’t be found in books, Eris,”
Sirius said harshly.
Ron tired to step in then. “I don’t think the elves or Eris just use
books…”
“Shut up, Ron,” the arguing pair shouted
simultaneously.
Eris stepped closed to Sirius, glaring
daggers at him. “You are an insufferably
arrogant git and you haven’t got a chance with
someone like Naiya.”
She stormed towards her dormitory
entrance then and Draco had to wonder if she’d even realized she had an
audience. Sirius was still shouting
after her. “Yeah…well…neither do you!!”
Draco had to stifle a giggle then
and Harry chose that moment to speak.
“Um, Sirius…I don’t think she…”
Sirius growled. “Never mind, Harry, she’s just realizing how
repressed she really is.”
“Uh-huh,” Harry said.
“Sure,” Draco said.
“I’m going to find ‘Mione,”
Ron said and hurried from the room.
Draco glanced over at Severus, who
just shook his head and went back into his lab, pulling Naiya
along with him.
Sirius threw himself onto the
couch and tossed an arm across his eyes.
Draco was definitely curious to know what had happened. The elder wizard growled. “What the devil is a Pixie Stick?”
Harry went and sat beside his godfather, but
Draco chose to keep his distance. The
green-eyed boy looked as concerned as he felt when he spoke. “Never mind that, Sirius,
what the devil was all that about?”
Sirius groaned. “Oh, it was all my
fault. I was being an idiot. I was flirting with Naiya
to try and make Eris jealous and she just…just…”
“Blew up,” Draco offered helpfully.
Sirius pulled his arm away and
nodded. “You caught most of the
argument. I know I shouldn’t have, but
she’s just been driving me crazy with the way she acts with you Draco…and the
way she is with Snape.”
“Sirius, Eris and Draco are just friends,”
Harry said in an exasperated tone.
“I know,” Sirius whined, “but they’re always
all over each other.”
“Well, you need to get over it,” Draco said
peevishly. “I am gay you know. I’m not interested in her that way.”
“But what’s to stop her from…”
“Because she can’t have him,” Harry cut in
with a growl. Draco was interested to
hear where this was going.
Sirius frowned. “Why not?”
“Because he’s mine,” Harry blurted out in a
frustrated rush. He then turned a
fascinating turn of red. “Bugger.”
Before Draco could think to
respond in any way, Harry dashed off through the portrait hole and was
gone. “Well, that was informative.”
Sirius snorted. “I’m glad I could improve your love life.”
Draco sighed.
“Listen, Eris is my best friend and I offer her affection because she
needs it. She can cope with most of us
acting like that with her because she knows it can’t go any further. We are sexually non-threatening. You, on the other hand, are a potential
mate. A sexual relationship is
inevitable if she accepts you. After all
she’s been through, can you blame her for fearing that level of intimacy?”
Sirius sagged. “Of course not.”
Draco nodded approvingly. “My advice is to give her some time to cool
down. When she seems approachable again,
go and let her know that you realize what a complete and utter git you acted like.
Do not spare your own feelings at all.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Sirius said miserably,
but then brightened a bit. “So what
exactly do you have planned for my godson…now that you know you’re welcome that
is?”
Draco smirked. “I can think of a thing or two to talk to him
about.”
“Only talk,” Sirius asked playfully.
Draco just rolled his eyes.
