The days were growing colder.
"Are you absolutely certain that's what he said, Harry?" Hermione asked for what had to be the tenth time. Harry glowered at her.
"He implied it!" He answered, tone brusque. "He implied that he was in a Partnership with… Snape." Harry couldn't help snarling the name distastefully.
"What did he say exactly?"
"Severus has ruined me for any other," Harry told her. "What do you make of it? I didn't think someone could have two simultaneous Partnerships. He can barely manage with me as it is, though he tries to hide it!"
Cringing, Hermione sat back, fingering the edges of the book in her lap. "Well, technically… one can only have one willing Partnership at a time. So, yes, Malfoy can be involved with Snape willingly and you unwillingly. That backs us into a dreadful corner, though, doesn't it?"
"He's sleeping with Snape!"
Hermione continued as if she hadn't heard Harry's interjection, "There are so many restrictions on an unwilling Partnership, while the potential for growth in a willing Partnership is boundless!"
"I'm going to kill him!"
Ron, who had sat in stunned silence for the most part, looked at Harry, slack-jawed. "Who are you going to kill: Malfoy or Snape?"
"Both!"
"Honestly, Harry, calm down," Hermione ordered. She summoned a vial of dark blue potion from the bathroom cabinet and pressed it into his hand. "Drink this. It'll help you to think clearly."
Harry uncapped the Calming Draught and swallowed it in three large swills. It started to work immediately, sending tingling pulses of magic along his nerves, a fuzzy feeling crawled over his heart and brain. He sighed and flopped back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I thought you said you weren't going to involve yourself with Malfoy anymore," Ron tentatively said. He and Hermione shared a concerned glance.
"Can't turn off my emotions, Ron," Harry muttered. "I get… jealous, sometimes…. Maybe a lot of the time, but it's not my fault. Malfoy shouldn't be sleeping around." Harry cringed. "Fuck. I have to end this, before I get even more attached…."
"You can't," Ron reminded him. "Moody won't hear of it. Unless we can find another shifter – which is bloody unlikely, sorry to tell you – we'll never figure out what Voldemort did to that last Horcrux. And if we can't destroy it, then you can't destroy him."
"And we've already lost access to Mordred's Star. We can't take another blow like that, Harry. The Order won't survive it. You'll just have to," Hermione winced and whispered, "suck it up."
"Suck it up, she says," Harry groused. "Don't you see that I've tried? I've tried being Dumbledore, and that didn't work, and I've tried being me, and that failed even more. I can't live for tomorrow when I can barely survive through today…. I know that I have to break him, but he expects it of me. It's not my overall plan that's crumbling, but each time I'm given a moment to decide – a chance to break him or leave him, I decide to prove him wrong. Whenever I think of doing it, I look at him, and I know he sees what I'm thinking, and he just… just gives himself to me, and I can't."
"He's manipulating you," Ron spat. "He's corrupting you – Harry, you have to see that!"
"I do see that. But what does it matter? I am stuck in the moment where I make the wrong choice, and that choice becomes a bad day, and the day becomes a death, and Voldemort wins. Draco keeps me so blind to anything but one day, someday, that I can't see the battle until it ends and I've lost. He's all but told me that he'll place my hand on every wand that strikes the Killing Curse. Every move I make is forced from me. He's turned me into my own enemy, made me like them in my own mind, and even though it's killing everything that I stand for, I… I think that I could love him."
"After all that?" Hermione said. "And even after he told you not to?"
"He can't control his emotions, Hermione," Ron said in Harry's defense, though his tone and expression were guarded. He sank back into his chair and stared up at the ceiling. Then he addressed Harry: "He wants you to fall in love with him, you know. And if you do, you'll be playing right into his hand. He'll take everything from you and give you nothing in return."
"He will help me kill Voldemort, whether he wants to or not," Harry corrected. "I can at least have that."
"How," Ron snapped, sitting forward and glaring at Harry. His face burned. "How will he help you do that if you can't even bring yourself to take as much of his power as you need to break the curse on Ravenclaw's wand?"
"There has to be another way," Harry insisted. "If I drain his power now, he will become a squib."
"That's no more than he deserves!" Ron shouted, jumping from his seat and turning his wand on Harry. "In fact, it's less than he deserves! Order members are dying – your friends – Tonks, Neville, Dean and Seamus—"
"Seamus was a traitor and I'd gladly kill him again!"
"Why are you protecting him?"
"Because I am not Voldemort!" Harry hissed, seething. His hand, clenched around his wand, shook. "And if you love me, Ron, as I am – as I once was – as Harry – you never again will ask me to do such a thing."
Ron turned away, biting his fist to keep from screaming. Hermione, holding a book to her chest and staring at them with a stricken look upon her face, wedged herself between them.
"There… is another way," She quietly said. "But it is a lonely road to take, Harry."
"We're not going that route," Ron snapped, glowering at her. "I can't believe you brought it up. We'll find some other way – a way that doesn't include harming Harry's… lover or harming Harry."
"What way?" demanded Harry. "And why didn't I know about it before now?"
Hermione cringed under the weight of both Ron and Harry's glares, and cleared her throat before speaking again. "It is a little risky, and no one in the Order could see how it would be overly beneficial to our cause…. And, as I said, you will be very lonely."
"Just tell me what I would have to do."
"You must go, blinded, down the Black Road. The ritual will take a few days to prepare, and Malfoy must be willing to accept that responsibility, at least. You'll have to talk to him right away, if you want to make it in time for the full moon."
Harry nodded. "We'll be ready in six days."
