Chapter 22 Shannon Returns
“Effy. I …”
“Is alright Miss. I is knowing you is confused. Is you remembering your Effy yet?”
“I think so. I remember warmth and singing. Feeling safe.”
“Effy would hold you and sing to you Miss. You is not sleeping without your Effy sing to you. We was being very close.”
Albus and Severus stayed quiet as Effy and Sky talked. Severus poured three large brandies, he passed one to the Headmaster and quite absentmindedly, passed the other to Sky. He was too engrossed in what the elf had to say. She took it but didn’t drink, she too was too immersed in what the elf had to say.
“I is being with you since you is borned. Before that I was with yous mother and her mother before her.”
“My mother? Effy where is she?”
Effy’s eyes went sad and she looked at the floor. “I is sorry Miss, but mistress Lilith is no longer with us. The night you was taken is the same night she was killed.”
Sky expression turned to one of horror when the elf told her this. For the last two years she’d hoped, imagined, even fantasised that one day she would find her parents. Or they would find her and they would be together like a real family.
“What about my father? Is … is he still …”
“We is never knowing who your father is Miss. Mistress Lilith is never telling. Even when her father is giving her the truth potion, she is not saying.”
Severus’ eyebrows shot up. “She resisted Veritaserum?”
“Yes Sir. And Legilimen’s. Nothing could get that information from my mistress Lilith.” Effy turned back to Sky. “Only one is knowing the real truth to who your father is, Miss.”
“And who might that be?” Albus asked.
“The Shannon knows Headmaster. But she is not telling Effy.”
“The Shannon. Merlin, is she still alive? Do you know how to contact her Kali?”
“She is here Headmaster. She is living at Hogwarts for many hundreds of years.”
Albus was astonished. “I did not know that. Where is she now?”
“The Shannon has her own place down in the kitchens. No one is daring to disturb her Sir. She is ruler. She is killing if we is displeasing her.”
“Shannon. I know Shannon. Severus, she’s the one who took me out on the hills to meet the Original. She’s really horrible Severus. Scary.” Sky placed her untouched glass on the coffee table.
“Shh Miss. If the Shannon knows you is not talking kindly of her she is getting angry and not telling you her secrets.”
“Well I can’t help how I feel Effy. She was really mean to me.”
“The Shannon is doing what she does for a reason Miss. Always for a reason. She is take you to meet with the Original yes, and he is blessing yous.”
“Yes she did. But you didn’t see him Effy. Or what he was going to do. And she left me on my own up there, as soon as he went, she left me.”
“No I did not.”
Both men, Sky and Effy jumped at the sound of Shannon’s voice.
“I stayed with you until you re-entered the wall. I was with you when you faced your terror; the same terror you now take to your bed.”
The old elf cackled when she said this, enjoying the discomfort on Sky’s face and the shock on the Potions Master’s.
“You may think I am mean and cruel, but not so mean and cruel as your man was to you when he brought you here. I did not abuse you as he did. I have not told you that you were unwanted or useless. Nor have I touched you in places you should not have been touched, broken your bones or slapped you to the ground. Shannon knows all of what happened during your time here. Just as I know all of how you lived your life in the wall. I was there when you were thrown from this castle. I was there when he tried to rape you that day outside the gates. I was the one who entered your mind and taught you to turn your wand on him and save yourself, although you did not know I was there.”
By now, Severus was on his fourth brandy. The old elf had just revealed in front of the Headmaster some of the terrible things he did to Sky during there summer together and Albus was looking at him with such anger that he could not meet his eyes. Severus felt so ashamed he just wanted to drink himself into oblivion.
The Shannon turned to Albus. “And you are no better. You accepted her only because you saw her as a means of destroying the one you all fear. You greeted her, made her feel welcome, treated her well when you finally decided to return from your gallivanting. But she was not important enough for you to cut your holiday short. Make certain she was well. And at the word of the sorting hat you turned on her and cast her away without a second thought. It was only when you discovered your own foolish mistake that you wanted her back to save you all. You are just as guilty of abusing her as he is. Maybe more so.”
Shannon turned back to Sky. “I was abrupt with you girl, but I was not mean to you. I did what I had to and protected you as best I could when you met with your forefather. Without his blessing, you would not have the power to defeat this Dark lord. Without my protection, you know what he would have done to you. Would still be doing to you had I let him take you away as he wished to do. Your Potions Master chose well that day when he looked into your eyes and named you Sky, for that is your true name. Your mother also named you for the colour of your eyes. ‘As blue as a midnight sky’ she would say. Just as he thought.” Shannon pointed at Severus as she spoke those last words.
Sky just stared at her amazed. “Shannon … I am sorry. I didn’t know. I am so sorry.”
“I know child. I bear you no grudge. Now before we go any further, Kali here, or Effy as you seem to prefer calling her, is desperate to be bound again to the family Morrigan.” Shannon ignored the gasp that escaped Albus at the mention of Sky’s surname. “You are the last of the Morrigan‘s. Will you accept her?”
Sky turned to Effy. “You want to bind with me? How? I don’t know what to do, what it means Effy.”
“You is not needing to do anything, Miss. Just say yes and I will serve you for the rest of your life. My family will be bound to yours once more. Is how it should be. We should never have been unbound.”
Sky looked at Severus and then at Shannon. The old elf gave her a slight nod. Sky looked at Severus again and he also nodded.
“Alright Effy. If that’s what you want. What do I have to do?”
“Nothing Miss.” Effy squealed. Her face lit up with joy when she looked at Sky.
Shannon stepped forward and took hold of Sky and Effy’s hands, placed them together and held them there as she muttered words in a language that Sky and the two men could not understand.
Golden tendrils flew out from Effy and wrapped themselves around Sky, gently squeezing her before returning back to the little elf.”
“We is bound again Miss. Effy could not bind to you without the Shannon because of the dark magic spell. But now nothing can break it again. It is forever. Now when you needs anything, Effy will gets it for you. I is protecting you at all times .”
Shannon snapped her fingers and the Potions Master and the Headmaster both fell asleep in their chairs.
“Shannon what did you do?”
“Do not worry. They are only sleeping. I have something to tell you that you may not wish to share. If you decide to tell them it is your choice. But for now, I will tell only you.”
“I’m ready Shannon. Is it something bad?”
“It is about your father and your forefather. The Original took himself a Furrii called Morrigan. She bore him a child, a daughter that he tried to take as his own when she was old enough. That is when the Furrii crafted the necklace you wear. Her wrath was such that she killed the Original and gouged out his eyes. She used one to place on the necklace and after crafting a wand from his leg bone, she used her own blood and his to form a core for the wand you now hold. For many generations, the stone you wear at your throat has been passed down through the females in your family. But all have been Missing one element that would empower the stone to work for them. The same element that would attract the Wand of Bloods. Your father carried that one Missing element. He too is a much removed descendant of the Original, just as your man and the Headmaster here are. That is why they are both so powerful.
Your father raped your mother when she was still a young girl. He called it seduction but it was not. Whether or not she would have submitted to him, he would have taken her. Once he had her, he left her. He was a handsome young man then, not like he is now. He did not know who or what she was, only that he wanted her.
When your mother discovered she was expecting you, she refused to tell anyone who the father was. Your father was a very frightening and powerful man. Her father, your grandfather would have gone looking for him. Your grandfather would not have survived had he found the one responsible for making his daughter pregnant.”
“So who was he Shannon? Does he know about me? Where is he now? He might want to meet me if he knows about me.”
“He discovered your existence through an article in the Daily Prophet. All magical births are recorded and announced in the paper as well as at the Ministry. When he discovered you were his, after a bit of calculating of dates, and that your mother was still unmarried he was not bothered, at least not to start with. But when one of his followers made some comment about the Morrigan women having special powers and that it was rumoured that one day a female child would be born that could destroy any other, go anywhere she chose, do whatever she wished, he began to worry. If you were that child, then you could be a threat to him. Harry Potter had not been born at that time.
Your father, along with several of his followers entered your home and murdered your mother and grandparents. Your bond with Effy was broken and you were supposed to be murdered also. But the stone at your throat protected you and he could not kill you. That is why he had you taken away. Certain of his followers were paid handsomely to keep you incarcerated, half starved and beaten on a weekly basis in the assumption that you would be too weak to survive. As far as your father knows, you died many years ago.”
Sky’s voice was barely more then a breath when she spoke. “My father …tried to … kill me. My own father. Who … who is he Shannon?” She knew who it was before Shannon spoke his name but she needed to hear it.
“Tom Marvolo Riddle. Voldemort, The Dark Lord. He goes by many names, child, but he is all one and the same. As he tried to destroy you, you must destroy him. You are the only one who can.”
“I have to kill my own father? But maybe if he knows I’m still alive he’ll want to know me. Maybe it was a mistake and he’s sorry.”
“I cannot make you believe the truth child. I can only tell you what is and what was. The rest is up to you. You have the love of a very powerful man behind you now. A man who will die to protect you. Keep him close to you, Sky. He will be your saviour, only he can help you.”
“Shannon, do you know who sent this letter about me?” Sky pulled the letter from her back pocket and passed it to Shannon.
“No. But you can find out. You know how to use your magic. It will not be too difficult for you.”
Shannon disappeared silently, leaving Sky alone with her thoughts and two sleeping Professors and Effy.
“Effy?”
“Yes Miss.”
“What should I do?”
“I isn’t knowing Miss. Only you can be knowing that. But your Effy will stand by yous whatever you decides. Maybe you should talk with the Snape. He mights helps you.”
You think so? Effy?”
“Yes Miss.”
“What if he hates me again when he finds out who my father is?”
“He is not hating you ever. He is loving yous. It is not mattering to him who is your parents.”
Sky was doubtful. Everyone in the wizarding world seemed to hate or fear Voldemort. She wondered how big the wizarding world was. “Are there lots of wizards and witches Effy?”
“Oh yes Miss. Millions of them all over the world.”
“Do you think Shannon might have made a mistake? Maybe someone else is my father. Or maybe there’s someone more powerful then me who can destroy him. Or maybe if he knows who I am he’ll feel differently an …”
“No Miss.” The elf interrupted. “It is as the Shannon says. She is all knowing and is never lying or making mistakes.”
Sky sat with her hands tucked between her knees and staring at the fire.
“You wishes Effy to stay when you wakes them up?”
“What? No it’s alright Effy. Thanks though. Maybe later in the week you wouldn’t mind telling me what my life was like before … well before.”
“Effy would like that very much Miss. You just says Effy and I is coming straight away.” The elf disappeared with a pop.
Severus opened his eyes and noticed Albus asleep in the chair. “Albus. Wake up. You fell asleep.”
“Did I? Oh dear how rude of me. I do apologise.”
Sky didn’t mention to Severus that he’d been asleep too.
“Where has Shannon gone?”
“Erm, she was needed.” Sky told the old man.
“But I had so many questions. Did she tell you anything?”
“That she didn’t know who sent the letter but I would be able to find out. Oh and that I had to kill m …Voldemort.”
“Well at least we have learned your name. That is a good thing is it not?”
“Yes it is. I have a last name and you both know about what you have done to me. I think that’s enough for one day don’t you?”
Albus felt his cheeks burn with guilt. And he could hardly rebuke Severus when his own action toward Sky were no better. Different but entirely as bad.
“Yes well perhaps it would be best if I were to leave you both alone for now. I would still like to meet with you this evening though if you are still agreeable.”
“”I said I would take to into the wall, Headmaster. I don’t break my promises.”
“Of course you don’t.” Albus said while feeling somewhat abashed.
Sky felt a slight pang of sympathy for the Headmaster. He really did look ashamed at what he did to her.
“Here, I’ll save you a walk.” She told him kindly. Sky opened the door to the lab, only it led directly into the Headmaster’s office. “Do you want me to come get you when it’s time?” She asked softly.
Albus’ eyes were wet when he turned to her. “That would be nice, yes. And Sky.”
She looked into his eyes. “I am truly sorry.” He told her. His eyes were honest and his face sincere when he spoke.
“I know. I just need a little more time.”
Albus patted her shoulder and nodded his head in an understanding way. “Thank you my dear. Thank you.” He stepped into his office and Sky closed the door quietly.
Severus, who to this point remained silent stood and moved over to her. Putting his arms around her from behind, he held her close and rested his cheek on her head. “That was a very kind thing you just did. You have put him at ease somewhat.”
“Good. Severus I need to tell you something.”
“Oh? And what might that be?”
“Something Shannon told me while you were … sleeping.”
“I was not sleeping. Albus was.”
“You both were. Shannon put a spell on you both. She said it’s up to me whether or not to tell you what she said.”
Severus was interested now. He turned her round to face him. “Whatever it is seems to be disturbing you. What is it?”
“I … my … It’s not good, can we sit down? You’re not going to like it.”
He took her hand and led her to the sofa, sitting with her and keeping hold of her hand.
“Sky whatever it is, do not be afraid to tell me.”
“She said I have to kill m …Voldemort.”
“Yes but you already knew that.”
She also said that my mother was raped, that’s how I came to be.”
He looked at her appalled. “Sky that is not your fault. Is that the reason you were afraid to tell me?”
“No. There’s more. Severus please don’t get angry.”
“I shall only get angry if you keep stalling. What is it that could be so terrible?”
“I know who my father is.”
“Well that is a good thing is it not? Why are you not pleased?”
Her eyes were brimmed with tears now. She stood and moved round the back of the sofa. When Severus found out that the man who tried to kill him was her father, he would probably go apeshit.
He turned and watched her from his seat, wondering what could be worse than what she already told him.
“Severus, when he raped my mother he left her. It was only after I was born that he found out about me. It didn’t bother him at the time but a couple of years later he was told about my powers. He knew that one day … well he decided that I would be better off dead.”
“He what?” Severus roared as he shot up from his seat and turned to face her. Her own father wanted her dead? How could any man wish that for his own child?
“Severus wait please. Just let me finish. He killed my mum and my grandparents and then tried to kill me. But the stone wouldn’t let him. So he had someone take me to that place where you found me. They were paid to make sure that I was beaten on a regular basis and kept short of food. That way I would be too weak to hold any power and would soon die. At least that’s what he thought. I think he’s believed for a long time that I was dead. But he might have figured out by now that I’m not.”
Severus narrowed his eyes, thoughts going through his head that he did not want to believe. “Sky, who is your father?”
“Promise you won’t shout at me Severus. Don’t get angry.”
“I am not going to shout.” He shouted. “I am sorry. Please just tell me.” He add more softly.
“My father is the one I have to kill. He’s Voldemort.”
Severus was stunned. Even though he already half guessed what she was going to tell him he was sickened. He blanched as he realised the implication of what she told him.
When Sky saw the look of horror and disgust on his face, it broke her heart. She knew he would be angry, enraged, maybe even panicked, but she hoped that he would care enough about her to help her. Instead he was disgusted with her; horrified that she was Voldemort’s daughter.
When their eyes met, all that Sky saw was the immense hatred in them and she ran through the lab door and into the wall, slamming it behind her. She couldn’t bear him looking at her like that. As soon as the door closed, she leaned back on it and sank to the floor, crying as she had never cried before in her life. Loud guttural sobs escaped her throat.
Severus was on the other side of the door, banging and shouting for her to let him through. He knew if he opened it he would only see the lab.
He didn’t understand why she ran away like that. Surely she knew he wanted to comfort her, help her. He hated the Dark Lord so much for what he had done to her. Surely she saw that in him before she ran away.
“Sky.” He shouted.
But Sky couldn’t hear him. She was lost in her own despair; believing the hatred Severus showed in his eyes was for her, because she was Voldemort’s daughter. When in truth, his hatred was for Voldemort himself. It was not for what he did to Severus, but for what he had done to Sky, to her mother and grandparents. The bastard left her to perish in that Gods forsaken place, rather than risk her overpowering him.
