Chapter 22
“Eggy. Sastimos. Sar san?”
“Hello Paula, I am well, though I do wish you would stop calling me Eggy. You know I hate it.” The Minister for Magic complained as he embraced the beautiful woman who entered his office. “Paula did you really have to let the blasted beast go free? You have caused me endless problems with your actions.”
“She was unhappy; she would have been no use to them keeping her in that state. She refused to mate and produce more young anyway. How would you feel if you were held prisoner merely for the purpose of producing children, only to have them taken away from you? I promised her Eggy and you know I do not break my promises. Besides, your letter clearly stated that I was to take whatever action necessary to ensure her well being. That is what I did. She is free now and a danger to no one. Let her be.”
“Let her be? Paula we have no idea where she even went when you released her. I am having the devils own job trying to appease the sanctuary officials, not to mention the department for Magical Creature control. Anyway, dragons aside, how are you?”
“I am fine Eggy. You know of course that I am teaching defence at Hogwarts.”
“I do, though I was surprised to hear that you accepted the post. You have always refused to stay in one place longer than a week or two.”
“I have my reasons Eggy, and what about you? Minister for Magic, a step up from the little chaveno cha (poor, starved or needy. boy) I remember with his arse practically hanging out of his pants.”
Egbert laughed at her remembrance of him as a young wizard from a poor family. “Very true, and you’re no longer the scrawny little bag of bones you were. You have become more beautiful as the years have passed. Are you sure you won’t marry me?”
“How many times have you asked me that same question? The answer is still no, but I will always be here if you need me Eggy, you know that.”
“Same here Paula, you are one of the few people I can actually call a true friend. Even if you did hurt my pride when you rescued me from that gang of thugs all those years ago.”
Paula smiled at the memory. “We were nought but chivvies (kids, young children) then, and it was seven against one. You did not even have a wand.”
“Neither did you and you were several years younger than me, but you still managed to see them off, as well as scare the hell out of me if I remember rightly.”
“The two sat and reminisced about their occasional childhood friendship, a pot of tea and several sticky buns being freely devoured before Paula said she had to make tracks.
“I know of at least one set of nails that are probably bitten down to the quick while we sit her harking Eggy, I must be jilling.”
The Minister sighed; it had been more than nice catching up with Paula after several years. He stood and walked her to the door. “You still driving that illegal hearse?”
“I am, and it is not illegal. I happen to know that the Minister for Magic himself has been in that car and enjoyed every minute of it.”
“Scamp.” He said, giving her a hug and watching her leave. Though they joked about it each time they met, Egbert Minnings would marry Paula at the drop of a hat if she ever said yes to him.
“No Severus I was not interrogated. Nor was I clapped in irons and tortured to reveal all my innermost secrets. I spoke with the Minister, we had tea and cakes and he asked me to marry him. Nothing more.”
“He what?” Severus asked, his voice low and dangerous.
“Asked me to marry him, just as he always does whenever we meet up.”
“Meet up? You have met the Minister before?”
“He is like my prala (brother), I have known him since we were terno. (young). He asks me to marry him every time we meet and I always say no. He expects nothing else.”
Severus could not quite let go of the frown that creased his forehead, even if she did insist the Ministers proposals were a standing joke between them, it did not mean he had to like it. “So there will be no charges brought against you for the dragon incident?”
“Of course not. I did what I was asked to do, there was not a gavver in sight. Eggy would not allow anyone to strickapen me.”
She smirked at his confusion. A gavver is a constable, or in this case an auror. Strickapen means to imprison.”
“Eggy?”
“Egbert Minnings. He hates it when I call him Eggy, that is why I do it. So, are you providing supper, or do I have to hunt down a nice fat juicy hedgehog?”
“Urgh! No, I will provide supper tonight I think.”
Paula laughed heartily, the sound of it following him as he headed for the castle kitchens to order food for the evening meal he planned to have with her.
At the moment, Severus had mixed emotions about the afternoon’s outcome. He was relieved that no action was taken against her, yet peeved that she was on such close terms with the Minister. He felt she could have mentioned that fact when she first received the Ministry letter, especially considering she knew he was concerned for her welfare. Severus also felt something akin to jealousy. The Minister it seemed, was also an old acquaintance of hers. He did not feel this way about her past relationship with the Headmaster, so why was he uncomfortable with her knowing Minnings for so long? They were obviously very close if she called him ’Eggy’ of all things. He wondered just how much of the Ministers proposals to Paula were truly in jest.
“Nice scran.” Paula said round a mouthful of roast lamb with mint sauce.
“Scran? Paula you are eating tender lamb, baby new potatoes, fresh carrots and callabrese and you call it scran? I have even brought one of the finest wines from my own personal stores.” I do not believe you woman. He said with an incredulous look.
“Well excuse me Mr high and mighty.” They both chuckled.
“Paula I am curious, you are Romany and speak the language, but you also speak extremely good English. I have seen and heard Gypsy folk in passing on occasion, they did not speak the way you do. How so?”
“That Severus, is I believe part of the tale I am not yet ready to tell you. It concerns my heritage on my fathers side, I will tell you no more. For now.”
This served to raise his curiosity to new levels, but he knew her well enough by now, she would not tell him until she was ready.
