LEECH
Chapter 22
Knowing the sight of his Death Eater robe and mask was his undoing, he removed the cloak and threw it and the mask into the bedroom. “Kathy it’s me, Severus, you don’t have to be afraid any more.” He said softly, thinking it would be safe to approach her now. How wrong her was.
As soon as he took a step towards her she screamed and pressed herself into the wall.
Shocked, he backed off and stalked to the fireplace. He floo’d Albus to come down immediately.
“Why the hell did you let her into my rooms?” He demanded of the older wizard once he stepped through.
“How was I to know you would return still wearing… those. We can discuss this later Severus. I need some gloves.”
Severus gave him a pair and Albus headed for the bathroom to where Kathy huddled on the floor against the bath, her cheeks raw where she’d gripped her face in anguish and her fingernails had raked the flesh, her skin was grey and she was trembling. “Nonono” seemed the only sound that left her mouth constantly.
“Kathy it’s alright, you’re perfectly safe. No one is going to hurt you. I promise.”
She lifted her face to his, terror still lurking in her eyes, but a small amount of hope at the sight of the older wizard.
“Come on Kathy, let me take you to your rooms, you will be perfectly safe. We can have tea, you’d like tea wouldn’t you, come on now, there’s a girl.” He spoke constantly, softly, encouraging her to stand, taking her hand and leading her from the bathroom.
As soon as she saw Severus standing at the fireplace she froze.
Albus shot him a warning look and he left the bedroom, stalked through the living room and went to stand in the corridor to give Albus a chance to take Kathy to her own rooms.
When he re-entered a few minutes later they were gone. Severus cursed himself for every kind of idiot under the sun. He wanted to kill Voldemort for calling him tonight, for punishing him because he failed to torture the muggle family when he was sent with three rookie Death Eaters with the intent of showing them the most painful ways to inflict agony and terror into the victims before killing them.
He wanted to cast a Crucio on himself for not properly removing and pocketing his robes and mask before entering the school. He’d been so angry and disgusted with the nights events, not to mention the pain he was in from his punishment, that he just hadn’t bothered. No one was ever around at this time of night anyway. At least not until Kathy arrived. Now she was petrified of him, she classed him along with those that murdered her family, kidnapped and raped her, beat her regularly. He’d stuffed up and he knew it.
She’d made his world here into a comfort zone. And he’d allowed himself to be lulled into a false sense of security. What a fool he was.
Albus took Kathy to her rooms and told her to get into bed while he made some tea. He conjured a soft chair next to her bed and settled into it, passing her a cup and drinking his own.
“Kathy you asked me for an explanation when Severus left so abruptly this evening, and I denied you that explanation. I was wrong to do so.”
She turned to him, face red and blotchy from crying. “It wouldn’t have made any difference. I know what he is now, and so do you, you always knew, yet you let me get close to him. Trust him. Fe… feel for him. After what they did to my family, to my life, you allowed that… animal to sit with me, eat, drink and talk with me. Are you one too? Do you go to peoples homes and murder husbands, butcher children, rape wives? Or maybe you did and now you’re too old so you leave it to him. To that animal in there. Get out.” She yelled. “GET OUT. LEAVE ME ALONE.” She screamed at him, throwing the teacup at him.
Albus hissed as the cup struck his face and hot tea scalded his cheek and neck, but he said nothing. Instead he looked sadly at her, rising to his feet and slowly making his way from her rooms. The sound of tormented sobs following him.
He found Severus in his bathroom, naked to the waist as he sought to heal the numerous bruises, cuts and welts that covered his torso, shoulders and upper arms.
Both men remained silent as Albus tended the younger wizards back, then let Severus heal the blistering wound on the side of his face and neck.
“I take it that went as well as my own entrance.” Severus commented dryly as he applied a generous amount of Murlap salve to Albus’ face and neck.
“Not quite as dramatic, but close enough. She is convinced I am a retired Death Eater, and you are my protégée.”
“She said that?”
“Not in so many words, but yes. We are going to have to tell her Severus, and soon. Tomorrow in fact. I will call only the key members of the Order to meet in my office and bring them down here.”
“It seems the best solution. Is she… ?”
“Still terrified, yes. And will remain so until she knows the full story.”
Severus told him what transpired when he was called to Voldemort that night, then Albus floo’d to his own rooms to get some sleep.
Severus crawled into his bed, but sleep was a long time coming, his thoughts on Kathy, the inability to block the image of her face when she realised what he was. What she thought he was.
Kathy too lay staring at her ceiling, not seeing it, instead reliving the night her family was murdered, the masked men torturing her babies, her children’s screams, the sight of Severus when he walked into the bathroom, the coldness that filled her heart when she saw the mask and realised what he was, that he was one of them.
She climbed out of bed and jammed a chair under the door. It was doubtful it would keep him out, but at least she’d hear if he tried to enter her room and kill her.
Next morning members of the Order of the Phoenix began to arrive at Hogwarts. Some arrived on brooms, others apparated, and a few travelled by floo.
When all were led to the dungeons and into the rooms of Severus Snape, a few eyebrows were raised, along with mumbled complaints and snide comments.
The door that led from Severus’ office to Kathy’s rooms was locked and heavily warded. Both Severus and Albus had applied strong silencing charms.
A note explaining that she was perfectly safe, and that she could expect a full explanation that morning, was left on her kitchen table. When Kathy read it she screwed it up and threw it in the bin.
The first thing Albus did was to call order amongst the members. He was not in the mood for Sirius’ bickering at Severus, or the Weasley twins pranks.
“I did not call you here merely for a chat, a serious problem has occurred and it is imperative that you listen carefully to what Severus and I have to tell you. I want no interruptions, and I will NOT stand for anyone criticizing a decision I made several months ago, or the fact the Severus has abided by my wishes. None of you will reveal what you are about to be told, and nor will you treat badly the person you are soon to meet with the usual stigma that is normally applied to those of her kind.”
Everyone looked from the headmaster to Severus, and back again, hoping to see some clue in their faces as to what was going on.
Albus explained that he sent Severus back in time to seek out a young girl who was the only childhood friend of Tom Riddle.
There were a few gasps at the revelation, but no one spoke.
Severus told what he saw as Kathy and the young Tom grew up in the orphanage, and her life after he left the school and her behind. He told them about her meeting and marrying a young man, giving birth to two little girls, and the terrible consequences of the Death Eater raid on her home. He told them about her capture, skimming over the ordeal she endured as a prisoner of those Death Eaters, but they all knew what would have happened to her, then told them that he brought her back here, at Albus’ request.
The room was silent for several minutes as each of them processed the information. Then Remus cleared his throat.
Albus turned to him. “Yes Remus?”
“Are you going to tell us why she was brought here, this mystery girl, woman?”
“I am, but I want a repeat of the promise you all made not to create a commotion over what I tell you. Your protests will be ignored, and I will say now that any who do react badly to the young lady, will be Obliviated and sent on their way. Is that understood. Severus and I, particularly Severus, have worked extremely hard to get the young lady to adjust to our world, and unfortunately last night, she witnessed Severus’ Death Eater mask and robes when he returned from a particularly gruesome summons. As such her former trust in us has been destroyed. Hence the reason for this meeting, she deserves an explanation, and in order to do that, she must be inducted into the Order.”
He looked to Severus, who in turn stood, his back straight, his whole demeanour tense as his eyes washed over those congregated in his living room.
“The young woman in question is named Mrs Kathleen Ripley, she prefers to be known as Kathy. She is not a witch, nor is she a muggle.” Severus gave a dramatic pause.
“Mrs Ripley is a Leech.”
