Excitement was in the air on the morning of the third and
final task. James’ guts were twisting around
inside him, but not from excitement. He
and Dumbledore had talked about it, and they both agreed that if anything was
going to happen it would be during the third task. If whoever had put Harry’s name in the Goblet
of Fire had been hoping the tasks would kill Harry, they now knew
differently.
Family members of the champions were invited to watch, and
they were allowed to spend the entire day.
A special room was set up where the champions could meet their families
after breakfast. Harry didn’t go,
probably because he wasn’t expecting anyone to be there for him; but the truth
was he had a large crowd waiting for him.
Cedric ran to go fetch Harry, and the boy was greeted with
the sight of Mrs. Weasley, Bill, James, and two regal looking elves he didn’t
recognize. Both elves were receiving odd
glares from the Delacours, and returning them just as fiercely. “Who…?” Harry asked his father curiously.
“This is your great grandfather Ivar Vale,” James said
pointing to one of the elves. “And the
other is his son, your great uncle Hezekiah.”
Both elves turned their attention to Harry. “I haven’t seen you since you were a newborn
babe,” Ivar beamed.
Harry was too shocked to speak for a moment. “You mean I’m part elf?”
James nodded. “It’s a
long story. I’ll tell you later, but for
now, get to know your long lost relatives a little and show us around.”
Harry nodded and led them all out onto the grounds. Hezekiah was the only one who had never been
to Hogwarts before, and he looked around in amazement. “This is a lot like back home,” he commented.
“Where is your home?” Harry asked, still not quite believing
he was related to these two creatures.
“Atlantis,” Ivar answered.
“Muggles think it’s sunken and dead, but that’s only the old human
city. The rest of the island has become
a haven of sorts for our people and magical creatures alike.”
Harry listened, not quite knowing what to say. “Are you, erm… we related to house elves?” He
asked. He was full of questions.
Ivar wrinkled up his face.
“Definitely not! Those creatures
are more related to goblins and gnomes.
We curse the day wizard kind decided to call them elves and lump them with
us.”
Harry was in a daze all day long. When Hermione met up with them and saw the
elves she looked stunned and pulled Harry aside.
“Harry, do you know
who that is?” she asked excitedly pointing to Hezekiah.
“Dad says he’s my great-uncle,” Harry answered, wondering
what she was getting so wound up about.
Hermione looked like she was about to faint. “Harry, that’s King Hezekiah of Atlantis!”
“King….?” Harry repeated the word, his whole body going numb
from even more shock. “He doesn’t act
like… I mean he’s not what I pictured a
king would be like.”
“That must be how he got into the library. If he’s a member of the royal family he would
have unrestricted access.” She glanced
over at James and looked extremely jealous.
“I would give anything to get into that library.”
Harry shook his head as they rejoined the group and he
introduced his friends to his relatives.
When it was time for the task to start the elves and the Weasleys headed
off to the stands. Before Bill and Molly
left Harry thanked them for coming. It
meant a lot to him, as they were kind of his adopted family.
James stood with Harry as the stands filled. Harry couldn’t help but notice a sizable
section filled with elves. “Are those
relatives too?” he asked his dad.
James nodded. “Only
Ivar and Hezekiah came to meet with you so you wouldn’t be overwhelmed. It’s a large family. Now Harry, I know a lot has been dumped on
you, but concentrate on the task. Did you study that book I gave you?”
“Yeah,” Harry answered.
“I just hope I can remember them all.”
“You’ll do fine,” James tried to assure him. “Confidence is very important.”
“I don’t feel very confident,” Harry mumbled as Cornelius Fudge
took his place to announce. He was
taking the place of Crouch, and didn’t look happy about it.
The champions were given their instructions and Harry and
Cedric were sent into the maze. James
wanted to scream, but he had to patrol the border of the giant maze with
everyone else.
Viktor was sent in second, and Fleur last. All was quiet for quite some time. The crowd soon started chatting amongst
themselves. Their interest was piqued when
red sparks were sent up and they waited to see who would be brought out. As it turned out both Viktor and Fleur were
carried out.
Everyone from the visiting schools was unhappy, but the
spirits of the Hogwarts students were raised.
It was down to Harry and Cedric.
While everyone was talking about which one they thought would win,
Dumbledore approached James.
“Is Lucius here tonight?” Dumbledore asked.
“No,” James said, shaking his head. “We both agreed it might be better for him to
stay out of public places. He also
thinks something might happen tonight.”
Minutes turned to hours. James had a horrible feeling in the pit of his
stomach that something was wrong. He
suddenly felt a stinging sensation on the right side of his neck and he rubbed
at it. Dumbledore noticed and reached up
to move James’ hand away so he could look.
The Headmaster’s eyes went wide as he watched a mark in the
shape of a phoenix appear on James’ skin.
“Oh sweet Merlin!” he gasped breathlessly.
“What?” James asked, starting to get worried.
“Your neck. You have
a phoenix on your neck.”
“Huh?” James said in confusion. “Why is there a phoenix on my neck, and why
does it burn?”
Dumbledore sighed and stepped back. “As much as I tried to fight it, the wheels
of destiny are turning.”
James growled, becoming more agitated by the second. He started pacing around the field, thinking
about going into the maze after Harry.
***
Harry stood tied to the headstone completely helpless while
the newly resurrected Voldemort rambled on.
He found himself hoping someone would come along, or better yet, that
his dad would find him. As the minutes
ticked by he wondered what Voldemort was waiting for.
Then several men in hooded black robes and masks
appeared. They all fell to their knees
and greeted their master. One of them
was Lucius Malfoy. Harry found himself
hoping that Lucius would somehow rescue him.
He was disappointed when Lucius started to grovel and kiss up like the
rest of them.
The blonde’s eyes widened a little when he saw Harry. “My Lord, we would all love to know how you
pulled off this miracle; how you came back to us,” Lucius said.
Harry was shocked. He
looked at Lucius’ hands and saw the enchanted dragon ring right there on his
finger, but Lucius was making no move to use it. Harry was starting to wonder if he was
witnessing the betrayal of his father.
Voldemort quite happily told his story, starting with the
night he lost his power and going all the way up to the present. Then he laid a finger on Harry which sent
white hot fire coursing through Harry’s body.
Voldemort announced that he was going to kill Harry so no one would ever
doubt his power again. Just before he
was released from his restraints, Harry saw Lucius press the tail of the dragon
with his thumb.
There was a bright flash in the sky and a loud bang. The lights swirled and James appeared in the
darkness. Voldemort’s eyes widened in
shock and rage. “You!” he shouted.
James stood poised.
He showed no fear as he glared back into Voldemort’s glowing red
eyes. “Hello Uncle Tommy,”
Voldemort screamed in rage and charged James, stopping
inches from him. “Don’t call me that!”
James didn’t even flinch.
“I’ll call you whatever I want.
You lost your body and I didn’t.”
Voldemort started trembling.
He clearly had forgotten about Harry, which was what James was going
for. He wanted Harry to run, but Harry
just stood there in amazement watching the scene unfold.
James continued to press Voldemort’s buttons. “Maybe you lost your powers because you’re
only a half blood.”
That statement really struck a nerve. “Silence!” Voldemort roared. “I will not be judged by a blood traitor!”
James knew he was onto something and tried not to
smile. “At least I have pure blood to
betray. And not only is it pure, but my
family tree contains each and every Hogwarts founder. That is what you’re obsessed with isn’t
it? You loved Hogwarts because it got
you out of that orphanage. I was in an
orphanage too, but I don’t remember much of it.
I was adopted when I was two. I
lived at Hogwarts.”
“Avada Kedavra!”
Voldemort shouted the spell.
A flash of green light flew at James. Just before it hit him Harry saw a white
bubble surround his dad. When the green
light hit him James flew back and slammed into a headstone behind him. He bounced and became a human pinball for a
few seconds before landing on the ground.
He was still for a moment and Harry feared the worst, but then James
slowly got up with a groan “That hurt….” he said as he climbed to his
feet. “Oh but look, I’m still whole.”
As Lucius watched everything unfold he felt like he was
going to puke. He knew what James was
doing and knew he wouldn’t stop until Harry was safe. But Harry wasn’t moving. While the other Death Eaters watched the
battle between James and the Dark Lord, Lucius threw a small pebble at Harry to
get his attention. When Harry turned to
him he mouthed the words ‘Get to the cup’.
Harry seemed to understand and ran to the cup. When he saw Cedric’s body he thought to grab
him instead and summoned the cup to him.
The moment his hand touched it, the graveyard disappeared, and Harry
found himself back on the quiddich field.
At first the crowd cheered, but they soon realized something
was wrong. Harry was lying on the ground
on top of Cedric. Dumbledore rushed
forward and pulled him off. “Harry, are
you all right? What happened?”
Harry was about to speak when Mr. Diggory rushed over. Dumbledore was distracted by him. No one ever saw Moody pick Harry up and carry
the dazed young man back to the castle.
There was another loud bang and James appeared and fell to
the ground; but nobody noticed him as he got up and looked around for
Harry. He saw the dark figures making
their way toward the castle and his heart dropped into his stomach. He stumbled off toward the castle. Dumbledore and Severus saw him go and they
followed.
When James reached the door to Moody’s office he was too
battered and tired to cast any more spells so he threw himself through the door. The lock gave way and opened with a sudden
bang. James fell to the floor, but found
himself struggling to his feet yet again.
Moody cackled at the sight.
“You…” he said when he stopped laughing.
“Yes, I have to admit I was worried about you. I’ve stories from the other Death Eaters, but
it seems they gave you too much credit.
Either that or I’m just that clever.
I see you escaped the Dark Lord still breathing, but you’re weak as a
newborn kitten. It looks like you ran
all the way up here just to watch me kill your son.”
“You’ve never been a parent have you,” was all James said as
he forced his vision to focus. Before
Moody could answer he clutched at his throat wildly, his mouth gaping
open. James felt like his whole body was
on fire, but he didn’t let go until Dumbledore and Severus charged in.
“Stop!” Dumbledore ordered.
“I need him alive long enough to question him.”
James released the man and felt his legs give out from under
him. This time he was caught by two
strong arms clad in black cloth. Severus
carried James over to a chair.
“Go get me your strongest truth potion,” Dumbledore ordered
Severus.
The Potions Master nodded and quickly left the room. Professor McGonagall entered as soon as he
left. Her first instinct was to take
Harry to the hospital wing, but Dumbledore stopped her. “He needs to be here for this,” he said
softly.
The normally stern woman merely nodded and stood back. Before Severus returned, Lucius entered the
room dragging a wounded Peter Pettigrew behind him. He scanned the room for James and bent over
to greet him with a kiss. “Sorry it took
me so long love, but I had to go around the crowd, and I also had to drag him
with me under an invisibility cloak.”
“Traitor!” the fake Moody shouted and tried to get up from
the chair Dumbledore had him bound to.
Lucius only turned to look at him for a second before
turning his attention back to James. “I
figured there was a reason you used a piece of fence to spear him to the
ground. And of course since the Dark
Lord had no more use for him he didn’t bother to free him and take him along
when he fled the graveyard,” He said the
last part so the other Death Eater would hear it. “How’s Harry?”
James peered over to where Harry was seated. McGonagall stood beside him protectively with
her hand on his shoulder. “Mostly just
shocked I’d say,” James answered as Severus finally came back with the
potion.
Dumbledore poured it down the imposter’s throat and made him
tell everything from who he really was to how he had come to be there. Then he asked Minerva to stand guard over the
man they now knew was Barty Crouch Jr. and Peter who was still lying quietly on
the ground and looking very sick and pale.
Dumbledore then turned to Harry. “I know you’ve been through quite an ordeal,
but I need to see you in my office.”
James grumbled quietly to himself. He didn’t like the idea of Harry being put
through anymore, but he knew it was best to get it over with. After sitting and resting for a few minutes
he felt a little stronger and helped Harry to his feet. Harry wrapped his arm around his father. Lucius put his invisibility cloak back on and
took Harry’s other side.
Sirius was waiting for them in Dumbledore’s office
frantically pacing back and forth. He
rushed forward to pull James and Harry into a hug. Lucius stepped back and let them have their moment.
“What happened? Are
you both all right?” Sirius asked.
Dumbledore motioned for everyone to sit and caught Sirius up
to speed. “Now Harry, I need you to tell
me everything that happened from the time you touched the cup until the Death
Eaters arrived. I think Lucius and your
father can take it from there.”
Harry’s whole body was shaking, but he felt some comfort
from having his father on one side and his godfather on the other, both holding
his hands. Even Lucius’ presence was
somewhat of a comfort because the tall blonde had also been there and shared
the experience. As Harry started to talk
he was surprised at how much better it felt to get it all off his chest.
When he finally finished Lucius put the invisibility cloak
on yet again and Sirius transformed into a shaggy black dog. Together they all escorted Harry to the
Hospital Wing. Molly, Bill, Hermione,
Ron, Ivar, and Hezekiah were all there waiting.
It seemed they had been pestering Madam Pomfrey about Harry’s
whereabouts. The sea of faces turned to
look at them as they entered.
“Harry will be fine,” Dumbledore assured them. “And while I encourage you all to stay if you
wish, please do not ask him any questions.
He will talk when he is ready.”
Harry barely registered anything as he was helped into a
hospital gown and put to bed. James
started tending to his injuries while Madame Pomfrey brought him a strong
sleeping draught.
They did corner James when he was ushered into a bed of his
own, and started asking him questions.
James gave them a short synopsis of what he knew while Madam Pomfrey
poked and prodded him.
It wasn’t long before a very loud argument could be
heard. The two voices belonged to Fudge
and Professor McGonagall. Everyone
looked at Harry, and hoping he wouldn’t be woken up.
Fudge marched right into the ward and demanded to know where
Dumbledore was. McGonagall was right
behind him looking very flustered.
Dumbledore arrived a few minutes later.
“Minerva, I thought I told you to guard the prisoners.”
“There’s no longer a need to,” she huffed. “The Minister felt the need to summon a Dementor
to protect him. And it... Peter died of fright.”
“But they were our only two witnesses!” Dumbledore cried out
in anger.
“It doesn’t matter,” Fudge said. “Those two worked together under the delusion
that they were serving their master and caused many deaths. They can’t harm anyone anymore.”
“It wasn’t a delusion Cornelius,” Dumbledore insisted. “I’m sure Minerva and Severus have told you
everything. Barty confessed to being
rescued and putting Harry’s name in the Goblet of Fire. Harry told me Peter was the one who performed
the ritual that brought Voldemort back.”
“And you believe him?” Fudge asked with a disbelieving tone.
“Of course I do.”
“But Albus… He…”
“He what?” Dumbledore asked, very irritated. “Have you been reading Rita Skeeter’s column?”
“So what if I have?” Fudge shouted defensively. “She wrote about a lot of things you’ve been
keeping quiet. And then she disappeared,
which I’m fairly certain you had something to do with.”
“Did the thought ever occur to you that she disappeared
because she was writing things that weren’t true and made someone very angry? And what about this?” Dumbledore grabbed
Severus’ arm and raised up his sleeve exposing the Dark Mark.
“It isn’t quite as clear as it was an hour or so ago,” Severus
said as he took his arm back. “But the
Dark Lord gave us all this mark not only so we would recognize each other, but
so he could use it to call us. Karkaroff
and I both felt it. Karkaroff has fled,
leaving his students here.”
“You’ve all gone mad!” Fudge exclaimed. He turned to King Hezekiah who was standing
between Harry and James. “You don’t buy
into any of this do you?”
Hezekiah stared Fudge directly in the eye. “I do.” he answered matter of factly.
“Of course you do,” Fudge scoffed. “Elves are just as daft as Albus.” He quickly found two knives pressed against
his throat.
“Easy Hezekiah,” Dumbledore pulled both elves back. “We don’t want any more bloodshed
tonight.” He turned his attention back
to Fudge. “You need to act quickly Cornelius. Even without Barty and Peter we have
presented you with quite a bit of evidence.”
“So you want me to raise the alarm and destroy everything
we’ve worked so hard to rebuild; and all on the word of a teenage boy who’s
been having breakdowns and a former Death Eater? I won’t do it. Dumbledore, I may not have always agreed with
you, but I’ve let you be. And now
you’re… this is just madness.”
“Fine then,” Dumbledore said stiffly. “You do what you feel you need to, and so
will I.”
“Now see here…” Fudge started, but he was interrupted when
Hezekiah stepped forward and stood toe to toe with him.
Harry, who was awake by this time, thought the king didn’t
act very kingly, but in that moment he watched in silent awe as the King of
Elves drew himself up and stared down the Minister of Magic with a royal
fierceness that was difficult to describe.
“Your foolishness incurred the wrath of Set upon your Ministry once
before, and I’m sure you will do so again.
I feel sorry for your people. Their
leader is more concerned with his own power and the status of one’s blood than
caring for them. I consider your
comments an act of hostility, and I will personally see to your downfall.”
He turned to Dumbledore with a much softer expression. “If you need anything friend don’t hesitate
to ask.”
He kissed his father goodbye before storming out, leaving
Fudge looking confused. “The wrath of
Set? I thought we were talking about
You-KnowWho. Who is Set?”
“The Egyptian god of chaos and war,” Severus answered
dryly.
“Oh,” Fudge said as he adjusted his bowler hat. “But… that elf threatened me!”
Dumbledore shrugged.
“You insulted him and his cousin.”
“The audacity of coming into my country and threatening me!”
Fudge raved. “But I’ll teach him.”
Dumbledore sighed.
“Cornelius, a wise man once said to me ‘Never fuck with an elf. It will be the last thing you ever do’.”
“Unless you use lots of lube,” James said with a
chuckle.
Dumbledore couldn’t help but laugh. “Indeed.
They seem to prefer avocado oil”
“Eww…” James scrunched his face up at the mental image.
It was then that Fudge’s attention was drawn to James. “I did some checking on you and the person
you claim to be doesn’t exist. Now who
are you?”
“I’ll never tell,” James answered with a Cheshire
grin.
“You had better start talking or I’ll have you arrested!”
Fudge threatened.
“Don’t you need to know my name to have me arrested?”
Fudge’s face suddenly grew very red. “This isn’t over,” he growled as he stormed
out.
Dumbledore gave a weary sigh. “Molly, can I count on you and Arthur?”
“Of course,” Molly answered.
“Bill, go tell your father everything.”
“And please ask him to talk to every Ministry employee that
will listen to the truth,” Dumbledore added quickly.
Bill nodded and kissed his mother before hurrying off. Then Dumbledore turned to Severus and Lucius,
Lucius having just reappeared from under his invisibility cloak yet again. “I’m sure the two of you know what I’m about
to ask of you. Can you do it?”
“Of course,” Severus nodded, though he looked a little paler
than usual.
“If James wishes it,” Lucius answered. “You didn’t know before because that’s the
way I wanted it, but circumstances have changed. I want you to know that the only reason I’ll
do it is because I love James, and the only reason you know now is because it’s
not fair to James to make him choose between Harry and me in order to keep the
secret.”
“Fair enough,” Dumbledore nodded and turned to Sirius who
was still a black shaggy dog at the foot of Harry’s bed. “I need you to go inform Remus of everything
that’s happened, and lie low in his home until I contact you again. Since Lucius so kindly brought us Peter alive
I’m sure you will be exonerated shortly.”
The dog barked and trotted out the door. “And you,” Dumbledore looked at James. “Try to stay out of trouble.”
James bit his lip and gave Dumbledore his best innocent
look. “I’ll try…”
“All right, I still have much to do,” Dumbledore sighed as
he departed.
