One Year Later
Draco’s first book was a huge success. He had sold thousands of copies within the first week and the sales were still climbing. He had allowed Mr. Rickman to set up minor interviews during book signings and one candid in depth interview was in the works.
Draco was now seated at a table, having just signed a book for the last buyer in line. He had signed book after book after book for three hours, and Ron had stayed faithfully at his side the whole time. Several had guessed at their relationship, and when asked, he and Ron openly admitted it.
“That was more exhausting then I imagined.” Draco said resting his head on Ron’s shoulder.
“You did fabulous. You deserve all this.” Ron told him. “I’m proud of you.”
“Thanks love.” Draco gave him a kiss and then they were notified that they could apparate from the back of the bookstore. He was glad, because he knew Ron was just as tired as he was.
Ron was now on the design team and was working on the latest project. In a year he had risen from the support staff to the main team and it was only a matter of time before he would be considered one of the top designers.
Draco was equally proud of him. He made time to appear at his side whenever he could. They relaxed at home, Ron giving him a wonderful ass massage to counter act the long hours in a chair.
“You should do this more often.” Draco said, enjoying the way his muscles felt.
“I’ll do it anytime you want.” Ron told him.
The next few weeks passed swiftly. Draco allowed his publisher to arrange more book signings and prepared for the interview that had been previously arranged. This was going to be in depth. He told Mr. Rickman that he wanted the interview to be at his home. If this was going to be a personal interview, then he was going to be comfortable. Besides it would look better if he invited the reader into his life, and where as always, Ron could be at his side.
After many questions about the book, and the upcoming sequel the interviewer became personal, as expected. Draco and Ron were well prepared. Ron had told him to hold nothing back. He was fine with anything he wanted to share.
Interviewer: I’d like to talk about your relationship if I may.
Draco: Of course.
I: The man you live with, what’s his name?
D: Ron Weasley
I: And how long have you been seeing each other?
D: About a year and a half now.
I: You first met at Hogwarts?
D: Yes, we met there in first year but didn’t become involved until a few months before we graduated.
I: Nobody knew at that point?
D: No, we kept it a secret, it seemed the best decision at the time.
I: Best for both of you ?
D: Yes, Ron had realized he was gay prior to that, but I had only come to the conclusion recently and was unsure of a lot of things. I had so many questions about myself, that I wasn’t ready to say I was one way or the other.
I: Was it confusing?
D: It was. I had never felt that way about anyone and on top of the stress of the final year of school, and peer pressure, it was the one aspect I couldn’t share with anyone.
I: Except Ron?
D: Yes, except Ron. He knew and like him, I decided to keep it a secret until I was ready to admit it to myself first.
I: And why did Ron kept it a secret at that point if he had knownh about himself before hand?
D: You’ll have to ask him.
I: Mr. Weasley?
Ron: For me it was privacy. My family has few secrets. With so many of us, it’s hard to kept things from one another. I have six other siblings and this was something so personal and private, that I was going to tell them when I was ready, and not before.
I: Draco, you mentioned insecurities. What type of insecurities?
D: The usual for any young man who wonders if he is homosexual. What would my friends say? Would I have friends left if I came out? Would my parents approve? Would they disapprove? Would they think there was something wrong with me?
I: Did your parents give the impression that they wouldn’t tolerate this?
D: (Draco thought for a moment before answering.) My mother, I knew would find a way to deal with it if she disagreed, I’m her only child and no matter what I did as a child I was always forgiven. My father was a hard man. He expected the best and I tried my whole life to live up to it. I idolized him in many ways and always wanted to be like him. As I got older, he began treating me like a man and the demands became closer to reality. It became a job to live up to what he wanted me to be.
I: And that included being heterosexual?
D: I don’t think the thought me being gay ever crossed his mind as possible. It never crossed mine.
I: When did it become a reality for you?
D: About four or five months before graduation. I saw Ron outside of classes in a certain situation and it made me think differently. I began thinking of my own reactions to young ladies I had socialized with and I started to question a lot of things. Over the course of a few days it became apparent that something was different.
I: When did it become clear to you rather than a question?
D: Not too long after that. I spent some time with Ron and was able to talk. It became clear to me that what I was feeling seemed right. At least between me and him.
I: How much time did you spend together then, while still managing to keep a secret?
D: We managed as best we could, in the ways that we could, and I’d like that to stay between me and him. But it was enough for me to gain the confidence I needed from him. He was sure of himself, I wasn’t. I needed to see that in him to be able to come clean with my family in time.
I: And when was that?
D: After I left Hogwarts, the same day actually. Ron already had plans to tell his family and move into this flat.
I: Ron, did you have these arrangements because of the fear of what your own parents would say?
Ron: No. I had always wanted to begin life on my own, to have my own place and be out of the house. I had a job lined up and ready, there was no reason for me to be at home supported by my parents when I am able to take care of myself. I also wanted to be here in case Draco needed a place to go.
I: So then it was your plan to leave home?
D: It wasn’t a plan, it was a backup.
I: Just in case your father evicted you?
D: (Draco was torn about how to answer. Things were going somewhat good with his father and he didn’t want to make him look bad. He chose his words carefully.) When you have no idea how someone will react, the best thing to do is think of everything. The best thing that could happen would have been if my father understood, and accepted it with no problem. The worst case would be if he threw me out of the house. I wanted to be prepared for all possibilities.
I: How did your father react?
D: I had told my mother first and she accepted it, if she had any other feelings, she didn’t let me know. My father was upset. He had thought he might introduce me to a young lady he knew but that wasn’t about to happen. There was an argument and I decided to leave. I wasn’t kicked out, I chose to take Ron up on his offer.
I: He offered you a place to stay?
Ron: I asked him to come and live with me.
I: Had you two developed a relationship by this time? And exclusive relationship?
D: We had that before we left Hogwarts.
I: Had your father spoken to you since?
D: Yes, we have since talked several times, and things are getting better.
I: Do you have the father-son relationship you want?
D: I wanted a relationship with my father, I never put a standard on it, I just wanted one.
I: It’s pretty obvious that Arthur Weasley has a reputation for being an accommodating father when it comes to his sons. Fred and George Weasley have said outright that it doesn’t matter what they did, their father would always have smiles for them. Is that true? (He looked at Ron.)
R: Yes, he was even excited to hear stories of what we did, away from my mother of course. (He chuckled.)
I: So no matter what, you knew your father would always forgive you regardless of what you did?
R: Yes, I suppose that’s true.
I: Do you find yourself envious at times of the relationship Ron has with his own father? It’s a typical example of unconditional love.
D: (Draco looked to Ron who was watching him. He stayed silent for a long time and thought carefully. The interviewer and Ron waited patiently.) I don’t know. It seems like someone would be, but I never felt unloved by my father, just pushed to be the best. It was more like I was disappointing him if I didn’t amount to what he expected of me. The fact that he may not love me never crossed my mind.
I: Would it be nice to have the casual relationship such as the Weasleys?
D: Ron’s relationship with his father is his own. The relationship I have with my own father is mine and it’s unique to me and him.
I: What happens now?
D: I’m working on my second book, Ron continues with Nimbus, and we all go on about our lives.
The interview appeared in the paper that weekend. Ron’s family praised his openness and Arthur went out of his way to say how mature he sounded. His father invited him to tea the day after the interview was printed.
“You didn’t mention the fight?” He said quietly.
“It’s not necessary. That’s between me and you and nobody needs to know.” Draco told him.
“You once told me not to apologize, that you didn’t want to hear it.” Lucius said.
“I remember.” Draco calmly sipped his tea.
“You thought it might be a reaction from your mother threatening to leave me.” He said. “I am sorry Draco, for hitting you. I never have and I did feel guilty about it.”
“Alright. Said and done.” Draco said. His father met his eyes and said nothing. “Apology accepted.”
Lucius and Draco sat in silence for a moment then he reached beside his chair. “Would you?” He asked his son.
Draco looked at a copy of his book, then took a quill from the coffee table and signed the inside, handing it back to his father. They continued tea in silence.
“That’s great.” Ron told him, as they got ready for another book signing.
“Yes, I always thought an apology for that wouldn’t mean anything, but it didn’t seem to be false.” He said.
“Then you can take it at face value.” Ron told him, holding out a cloak.
“Yes, I can.” Draco fastened his cloak. “He’s going to be there today.”
“Good. Ginny and Harry will be there too.” The clasped hands and apparated to the book store. They were greeted by a frazzled owner.
“Mr. Malfoy, we have a problem.” The owner was wringing his hands.
“What kind of problem?” Ron asked.
Lucius Malfoy walked in. “There is a crowd of about twenty people outside the store son. They read the article and object the store promoting an outright homosexual writer. Mr. Potter is out there, and he’s already summoned additional aurors.”
Draco and Ron looked at each other. Ron squeezed his boyfriend’s hand. A mob of twenty angry people could be dangerous and Harry summoning more Aurors didn’t make him feel better.
