Chapter 22
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi, who I couldn't work without anymore. Thanks, Tenchi!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Watching Sirius pace, Lucius had his hand over his mouth, shaking his head. A glance at his wife, seeing the curious look there, he shrugged, “We're not getting much except a lot of rage here. He's been asking questions of me about what to inquire after, but I don't think he's in any shape to tell us what might be causing the reaction we're feeling.”
Making another lap around the table, Sirius said, snarling softly, “Whatever is going on is really bad. I've never felt him this mad before. Even the bit where he shattered the glass is nothing compared to this.”Eyes wide, Narcissa looked between the two then asked, quietly, “Any clue as to what is going on?”“Only guesses from what he's asked me,” Lucius sighed. “I'm not sure, as it could relate to all kinds of things. We're just going to have to wait until they get home. And I'm not sure Harry's going to be in any shape to tell us. He's infuriated.”Shuddering as he felt a backwash of pure anger from his godson, Sirius stopped pacing and looked down then said, “They're on their way back.” Looking around, he said, “This is going to be bad. Really bad.”Looking at the door as he heard the front one open, Lucius waited, tense. Whatever was coming wouldn't be good, he knew that. Harry was bad enough, but if it was enough to set the young man off this way, Sirius wasn't going to be in any better shape when they were done.Walking in, face a mask of pure rage, Harry threw a whole sheaf of parchments on the table then sat down, putting his head in his hands, breathing deeply and trying to get himself under some form of control before anyone could talk to him.Seeing Sirius sit down by Harry and slip an arm around the young man, Remus sat down by Narcissa then said, quietly, “Severus will be here in a couple of minutes. He's gone to get a calming draught. I think Harry needs to take that before we even attempt to start here.” Looking between the concerned Sirius and Lucius, he added, “Lucius, we need to get Harry a solicitor, now. This needs handled very quickly.”Nodding, not liking the sound of that, Lucius reached out to pat the enraged young man on the back. He would wait until Severus got there to press on, but was curious as to what were in those parchments on the table.Looking at Remus, who was pale, shaking and wide-eyed, Sirius asked, “How bad is this?”“Bad enough.” Remus admitted softly. “Severus and I—we need you and Lucius to look at some of this. We have no idea about most of what was said or how to deal with it. We got the answers we needed and Harry has all the documentation Lucius told us to get. In two day's time, he'll have a full accounting of his assets thanks to the paper he signed that absolved Gringotts of any guilt in all the matters.” Looking up, he was relieved to see the pale Severus come in.Handing over the calming draught to the enraged young man, Severus sat down and said, “Take that, Mr. Potter. We need you as calm as you can get to deal with this and pass on what we found.”Downing the potion, Harry tossed the vial aside then shook his head, folding his arms over his chest. “This is—bloody hell. They screwed me good on some things.”Glancing at Lucius, not liking the sound of that, Sirius asked, gently, “What's going on?”“I no longer own the house at Godric's Hollow. The Ministry does. Hours after mum and dad died, the Ministry cut a deal with the Wizengamot to take the house in exchange for not taxing me until I hit seventeen. I can get in it, once, when I turn seventeen to get what I want out of it. In order to do that, I have to take someone from the Ministry so they can approve what I take.” Snorting, he snarled, “That is all mine! It's not theirs!”“What the fuck?” Sirius asked, temper starting to rise, looking at Lucius, who was wide-eyed as well.Shaking his head, looking between Severus and Remus, both of who were nodding, he said, “They can't do that. Only the person charged with handling Harry's estate could cut that deal.”“They did,” Remus said quietly. “It's signed by three members of the Wizengamot, including Albus.”“The goblin we dealt with did say that Mr. Potter can fight it in court.” Severus added, shaking his head.“And I'm going to. I don't care. That is mine. It was my parent's. They have no right to it!” Harry snarled, glaring at the papers.“I'll help you get a solicitor,” Lucius assured him, brow furrowed. “What else do we need to know.”“Albus was put in charge of his vaults, that's why he had the key,” Severus explained. “He was also put in charge of Mr. Potters vote in the Wizengamot when it comes to law making until he reaches his majority or Mr. Potter steps in and removes him. To do that, he has to put someone else in charge until he reaches seventeen. That's understandable. However--”Before Snape could continue, Harry jumped in, snarling, “They overrode mum and dad's wills as to where I was supposed to go and who was to do what.”“They can't do that either,” Lucius said, brow furrowed.“Tell Dumbledore that,” Harry snapped, looking at him, enraged. “He did it. It was his name on the order from the Wizengamot. They disregarded every bloody thing in those wills, including who was supposed to get custody of me.”“Who did they give custody to?” Lucius asked, looking around, not liking the sound of this.“Me,” Remus said softly, looking down and shaking his head. “Lily and James made every legal provision there was for me to take him, including paying someone to come in on the nights of the full moon. If something had happened to me, Harry was to go to Molly and Arthur. Lily made it clear that Petunia wasn't supposed to get custody.”“And, despite that crap Dumbledore spouts, Aunt Petunia was not my legal guardian either,” Harry hissed. Before they could even ask, he said, “Dumbledore is. It's him that has the right to dictate what I do, where I go and how things are handled.” Stopping, for the first time he grinned, though it was something evil, “Well, he did. That changed just before the end of term, from the date on the paper we saw. Sirius is now. Whatever happened there, custody finally went to the right person. And it's legal as the goblins have it on record.”“No fucking way,” Sirius snarled, looking around, starting to shake from rage.“Oh, yes,” Harry chuckled mirthlessly. Shoving the papers at this godfather, he said, “Read it for yourself. It's all there, every bit of it. It's the reason no one, anywhere, could do anything to get me away from that hellhole and they had to listen to him. It's magical and binding unless I do something to take it to court. Which I sure plan to do! Sirius is fine there, no problem, but this crap is not going to continue. I signed the papers to get the accounting and documentation like Lucius said, so I have them. Nothing that old man can say can change it now. He also won't be notified it was done either.”Gently taking the papers from the shaking, enraged Sirius, Lucius flipped through them, shaking his head. Sighing, he looked around then said, “I'll contact a solicitor today and get him on the case. No, this—we'll handle it, Harry. It won't continue.” Looking at Remus, he said, “I'm going to suggest here that we file for you take legal guardianship of him as the will stated. Sirius is around, but with his position this isn't wise as we don't want to draw attention to him. Acceptable?”“That's fine,” Remus said softly, looking between Lucius and Harry. “We got everything we could think of, then what you told Harry to ask about and retrieve. I don't know how much more there might be, Lucius. The goblin we dealt with seemed quite upset by some of what he told and showed us.”“There are ten vaults total when it comes to the estate, including one they can't give the name of until something is put in place with a legal guardian or papers are signed for it,” Severus said, clasping his hands on the table and looking at Lucius. “One is the school vault Mr. Potter has been using and one that was intended to be used for the stipend of whoever had custody. It's our understanding that it wasn't ever touched. In fact, there is no record of anyone getting into any of the vaults until Harry showed up the first time. So, at least there is no embezzlement to worry about. The ledger that contains the papers for the assets and properties will be here in a couple of days.”“We'll start going through that then,” Lucius assured them, looking through the papers, brow furrowed. Quietly, he said, shaking his head, “None of this is legal when it comes to so much. I don't care if it's signed by someone on the Wizengamot. They would have to override laws to do this, something they can’t do.”“Since when does that matter to those arseholes?” A furious Sirius asked, eyes flashing. “They sent me to prison without a trial. That's against the law too.”Conceding that with a nod, Lucius rubbed his forehead as he thought. Sighing, he said, “I know who to get to handle this, never fear. Severus and Remus can take Harry. I'll ensure he knows what needs handled and how we need to go about it.” Looking at the angry young man, he said, “We're going to need you to sign a legal document for him to continue even if you aren't around for it when we vanish. We also need you to sign one to release Remus to handle legal matters. And one to where he can get into your estates. That way, if we find someplace we can use, it won't set off alarms at the Ministry.”“Fine,” Harry huffed, shaking his head, still looking furious.“Lucius, on this you need to go,” Severus told him firmly. “I have no idea what I'm doing. I'll provide Polyjuice for you to use and stay here, doing the same in case someone comes over. You're the only one of us that has the knowledge it takes to ensure everything is handled.”Thinking that over, Lucius nodded, “I'll do that. Let me see what I can manage here to set something up late at night to stave off any issues that may come up. If I say something along the lines of this is something that needs handled discreetly with no one knowing, I should be able to manage. Let me see what I can work with here.”“What the hell is that old man planning for me? If it goes this far back, he knew something, somewhere, a long time ago. I mean all this went into effect hours after mum and dad died,” Harry said, looking around. “That means he was either scrambling to do it or planned it beforehand. Either one isn't good.”Looking at the papers Lucius was holding, Sirius said, honestly, “I don't know. And I don't think any of us have any way of finding out, Harry. Some might be benign, such as trying to protect you in some way, though this wasn't the way to do it. Others—yeah, it makes no sense here.”“We'll take care of it,” Lucius told him distractedly as he read through all the documentation, shaking his head as he did. “Then we'll try to figure out what is going on. That I'm not sure we can manage, at least not right this moment. In time, it'll come out. Let's worry about locking all this down and making certain you're protected before we worry about that chunk.”“What the hell gives someone the right to play with my life this way?” Harry shouted, face a mask of pure rage. “It's not his place to do this! It never was. Mum and dad made sure I would be taken care of. He didn't even have the bloody decency to honor what they wanted when they died for the mess he's still trying to work with. Someone explain this to me!”“We can't,” Sirius told him, holding him close, shaking his head. “It's not going to continue though, we promise.”“Do you think Molly and Arthur know that they were supposed to be given custody?” Lucius asked, looking between Sirius and Remus.“I don't think so,” Remus said with a shake of his head. “I know they aren't your favorite people in this world, but I think I can safely say that I don't think either of them would have gone along with a scheme like this if they had known. They take children, and their welfare, very seriously. If they knew Lily and James wanted them to take Harry, they would have without a second thought then done the right thing.” Lowering his voice, he added, “Lucius, I didn't know I was supposed to get custody. They had mentioned it at some point, of course, but, as nothing came of it, I assumed that me being a werewolf made it impossible to fulfill.”Taking that in, Lucius nodded then said, “It may have been a case that they didn't want anyone to know who would take Harry to protect him from so much. That did happen quite often in the last war for various reasons.”Looking at the enraged young man, Severus added, softly, “Lupin and I are going to take Mr. Potter to see his parents in a couple of days. It's the least we can do as no one has seen fit to do that. We'll employ disguises, of course, but we decided it's past time that visit takes place.”Looking at Harry, Sirius didn't know what to do. He was infuriated, rightfully so. Hell, he was feeling the same way. Nothing good would come of it if it went on either. Sighing, he thought it over then said, nudging Harry, “We'll let Lucius, Remus and Severus handle this, alright? We need a break. Why don't you and Draco grab your brooms. We'll go out and smack some balls around to relieve stress. If they need us, they can come out and yell. Work for you?”“Fine,” Harry said, looking down. This was bad and he needed to do something before he started hitting things. Standing, he didn't wait to see what Draco had to say then headed towards the backyard. Yeah, maybe smacking something around would do him good.Seeing the wide-eyed Draco nod then stand, following Harry out, Sirius said, softly, “Unless it's something huge, I'd suggest you let us blow off some steam for a while before coming out.” Seeing the others nod, he went to follow the other two.Watching the man go, Lucius then looked across the table to Severus and Remus before asking, “Is there anything else I need to know here? I'll go through this to get a feel for what's here, of course.”Shaking his head, Remus sighed, “Not that I can think of. We were all—blindsided is the only word I can come up with. We had a hard enough time getting Harry to focus on what to get for you once we found out some of this, that whatever else there was we might have come up with to ask was lost.”“I think we covered the major points,” Severus told him, looking dour as he glanced at the papers. “I made sure we were given copies of everything he signed and what you asked for. Beyond that, we just went with what we could here. The Ministry and Albus have their hands in it. And I was at a loss as to what to ask to get information.”“You got the major points here,” Lucius told them with a nod. “And Harry is right; they screwed him good. It's nothing we can't fix, I don't think. It'll just take time. Let me work with this then send a message to the solicitor I'm thinking about. We'll go from there when I get his response. He's one that Albus has no pull with and he won't kowtow to the man.” Looking around, he sighed, “We'll handle it, don't worry.”
After the evening meal and when the elves of the blood traitors had cleaned up the kitchen, Kreacher was in his cupboard, holding himself, shaking madly, as he looked at the winged snake in there with him. This was terrifying. The snake wasn't a ghost, he knew that, and it wasn't an illusion of some kind, but the poor old elf didn't know exactly what it was either. All he knew was that it was very real and talking to him. Shaking his head, he stammered out, “Kreacher will not help the blood traitors. He won't do that.”
Hissing softly, trying to keep the elf calm, the snake said, “You're not helping blood traitors, Kreacher. All you're going to do is aid in doing what Regulus wanted you to. His son needs that locket to protect himself in the future. He told you just before the Inferi took him to do that. He also told you of a message to pass on to Sirius. That's what you'll be doing, nothing more.”“The blood traitor's son is not Master Regulus' child. He is a Malfoy,” Kreacher told the snake firmly. “Kreacher won't help blood traitors.”“Draco is a Malfoy by the aid of a potion, nothing more. He is very much Regulus' child. It was his bidding that you help him, Kreacher. That is what I want you to do.” Knowing that the elf was slightly damaged from all that had gone on, the snake said, tone taking on a tinge of wrath, “I will possess you and force you to do that if I must. You don't want me to take that step, Kreacher. Do what your master wanted of you. It will be self-proving when it happens.”Shivering at that thought, Kreacher eyed the serpent warily the asked, tone quivering, “What would Kreacher have to do?”“It's very simple,” the snake soothed. “Take the locket with you then go touch Harry Potter on his scar. It's nothing more than that. Once you do, you'll know I'm telling the truth and you can finish what your master wanted you to do. The prophecy you were foretold is coming to pass as we speak. You'll see part of that manifest when you do this, Kreacher. Harry Potter can open the locket and activate the protection for Draco. You can't, you know that, because you've tried for years. Only Harry can open it. He can speak the language of the Seer.”Thinking that over while keeping his eyes locked on the snake, Kreacher didn't know what to do. He knew what Master Regulus wanted him to do, but this was confusing. So many years had passed with him not being around anything but the painting that he didn't know who Master Regulus' son really was, though he knew he was out there.“Kreacher, you serve the House of Black. Doing this is fulfilling your duty. You will serve it well in setting into motion the prophecy. It is Sirius that is to fulfill it, for the House of Black anyway. Regulus told you that. Your mistress was wrong, Kreacher. Regulus was not the one to fulfill the prophecy. If he had been, he would still be alive.” The snake told him gently. “Let me help you, Kreacher. You can then do what you promised, I give you my word.”Thinking it over, keeping an eye on the snake, Kreacher gave a tentative nod. “I just touch Harry Potter and bring the locket, nothing more?”“Nothing more,” the snake assured him, keeping a soothing tone. “The rest will happen as it was destined to. He will help you fulfill what Regulus wanted. Then you can help all of them, as is your destiny as well.” Sliding closer, trying not to frighten the elf more, the snake said, “I will come with you to help. Together we'll do what Regulus wanted and set off the prophecy. You can watch as it happens. You'll be helping more than you know. They are not what they seem, Kreacher, none of them. You've done your duty to protect the locket. It's now time to help finish what Regulus wanted.”Thinking it over, eyes locked on the snake, Kreacher nodded slowly. “Kreacher can do this.”“You will be fine,” the snake soothed softly. “No harm will come to you, from me or anyone else. I will wrap around and protect you. No one else will see me. Just trust in what your master wanted, Kreacher. That's all you have to do.”Shuddering at the thought of the snake wrapping around him, the elf nodded then began to fumble around in his meager possessions for the locket he had guarded with his life.
Curled up on one of the settees in the small living room, Harry had his head in Sirius' lap, eyes shut. He was much calmer than he had been, but wasn't feeling the greatest still, not with all he learned that day. Sirius was stroking his head as he read through some things. Remus and Draco, last time he looked, were both still going through books on the snake thing. Narcissa was helping Lucius with the letter he was composing. Snape had left a while ago.
Curling up more, he tried to relax, though that wasn't happening. Right now, he just wanted to take a nap, but his mind was too chaotic for that. It kept circling back to what he had learned earlier, focusing there as he tried to figure so much out. However, that was soon pushed aside when he heard that hissy voice once more telling him it was time. Stiffening up, not liking that though resigned to it, he opened his eyes. Kreacher appeared in front of him with a soft pop. The elf seemed to be shaking, as though he was afraid. Pushing himself up as things seemed to almost go into slow motion, he saw the elf reach out towards him. About to yank back, knowing what could come of it, he didn't make it before one of Kreacher's long, bony fingers traced lightly down his scar. Immediately, the pain came, causing him to cry out. Without thinking, he reached out and put his hand on the elf's to pull it away. Then the visions came crashing down on him, his scar starting to bleed as a pain worse than anything he had experienced before rocked him. Hearing Sirius and Lucius, both, say his name, the world around him dimmed as he focused on the visions that were playing out.
