Disclaimer: I do not own HP, JK Rowling does. I make no money doing this. I have the moths in my pockets to prove it. |
Screams and sounds of people being tortured continued for a while. There were angry shouts and accusations. They could only make out the words ‘you’ and ‘your fault’ among the noise. Light misty shapes formed in the center of the room but they were impossible to make out.
“What have I done?” Hermione whimpered, tears leaking down her cheeks onto Draco’s chest. “Oh Gods, I’m so sorry Draco. I didn’t think that the room would...would.”
“Hey,” Draco said, his voice surprisingly calm considering he was shaking like a leaf. “It’s not your fault. You just told the truth. Shhh… don’t cry please.”
“I-I’m sorry. What is this?”
“I don’t know,” Draco breathed, wishing he had a better answer.
“Why are you doing this?” Hermione shouted to the room. “What are you trying to prove? We’ve jumped through every bloody hoop you’ve given us. We’ve worked together, gotten along, become friends and then lovers. What more do you want? We can’t continue on outside. It’s just not possible.”
The room answered by wailing like a banshee. It caused shivers to ride up their backs. The walls vibrated. Sharp stones cut into their unprotected legs. The temperature seemed to drop even further, causing them to cling to each other tighter to share body heat.
“Hermione, I’m not sure antagonizing the room is going to help.”
“I want to know why it hates us,” she sniffled.
Just like that, the room went silent and still. It was still dark. They were still naked. They tried summoning their wands but nothing came.
“Let’s try to find them,” Hermione said, pulling away slightly.
Before she could shift any further, the room filled with light. It hurt their eyes for a moment until they adjusted. They were in the corner of the room where they’d been sleeping, only the room was much different now. It resembled a bedroom from the Middle Ages. They cringed at the chamber pot by the bed. That brought back some very unpleasant memories.
“Why this place?” Draco whispered, his eyes focused on a quilt a few feet away.
“I don’t know,” Hermione whispered back, pointing to the same quilt.
Draco nodded and quickly untangled himself from Hermione. He sprinted to the bed, trying to snatch the cover away but his hands met with thin air. He waved his arm through the bed and it parted like smoke in the air. He returned to Hermione quickly, settling her on his lap and holding her close.
“It’s like a pensieve memory,” Hermione breathed.
“But who’s memory?”
The door squeaked open, a flash of red hair and two blue eyes poking through before a plump woman darted in, slamming the door shut behind her. She was breathing rather heavily, like she’d either been running for a while or was terrified of being caught. She collapsed on the bed and shakily took out her wand to cast a spell on her clothes, revealing that she was heavily pregnant.
“I think it’s the room’s memory,” Hermione breathed, noticing the door looked like it did before the fire.
“The room has a bloody memory?”
The door opened again, much faster than before, emitting a rather tall man with a beard that almost reached the floor. He resembled a grey eyed monkey. Hermione had to stifle a giggle at the absurdity. The man crossed the room in a few strides, swooping down to engage the woman in a kiss.
“Merlin’s hairy left nut,” Draco breathed. “That’s Salazar Slytherin.”
Hermione gasped and took a closer look. “Oh goodness, he’s kissing Helga Hufflepuff.”
“Impossible,” Draco whispered. “Hufflepuff wasn’t a pureblood.”
“Neither am I,” Hermione said dryly.
“Touché.”
“My darling Helga,” Slytherin purred. “I have missed thee.”
“I have missed thee as well, Salazar,” Helga whispered but her face was filled with sadness.
“What vexes thee?”
“I believe Rowena and Godrick suspect our dalliances.”
Salazar’s tender look turned to ice in a moment. “What business is it of theirs? Those without blame should cast the first stone.”
Helga looked shocked. “Thou art suggesting that they…”
“Yes, it is so.”
“We must tell them Salazar. This child is due come spring.”
Salazar’s face grew even darker. “This offspring is an abomination.”
Helga looked as if she’d been slapped. “It is the proof of our love.”
“It is not pure!”
“I am not pure!”
“Thou…art an exception.”
Helga’s face crumbled. “This child shall be a bastard.”
Salazar nodded. “I stand by my decree Helga. Not even my own offspring will change it.”
“Why Salazar? Why cast out so many who would be so talented?”
“Why? Because wizards and muggles should not mix! It is an abomination.”
“How dost thou explain muggle-borns?”
“Another abomination.”
Helga’s face turned black. “Thou darest call my father an abomination?”
“I call him lucky to have garnered the attentions of such a pure witch.”
“Salazar Slytherin, I have heard thee speak most foul of a great deal of things and I have loved thee in spite of them. I cannot do so any longer. This hatred thou hast for those of unpure blood will be the death of us all. Be gone from my sight. I wish to see thee no longer. Never call again. This child will never know that it had such a horrid man for a father.”
“Helga,” Salazar breathed. “Thou dost not mean that.”
“I do,” she said coldly. “Take your leave.”
The two teenagers in the corner sat in stunned silence as Salazar tenderly kissed her head and walked out in silence. They swore they saw tears in his eyes as he went. Helga held herself together until the door closed, breaking down in great sobs. She apologized to the unborn babe in her womb, swearing that she would do right by it.
Ravenclaw and Gryffindor entered much later. They told her Salazar had left, claiming that he couldn’t stay if they allowed those with unpure blood to attend the school. Helga begged for mercy upon admitting her indiscretion. The founders accepted her plight and vowed to help her raise the child. It would know love, despite having Slytherin for a father. The three finally got up and left the room.
When the door closed, everything vanished into inky blackness once more. Draco and Hermione could barely breathe they were so stunned. Salazar Slytherin had been so adamant about pure blood that he’d abandoned his own child because Helga was a half-blood. Even Voldemort had allowed half-bloods to serve in his army. Then again, he was a half-blood himself.
“That child would have been considered a pureblood,” Draco growled. “Helga’s mum was pure, making her half. Salazar was pure. There was enough pure blood to be considered pure.”
“Not enough for Salazar,” Hermione said quietly.
Draco nodded, thoroughly perplexed. Salazar truly loved Helga. It was obvious. Why abandon his lover and his own child? Wasn’t love enough? That thought made his chest ache. No, sometimes it wasn’t.
AN: I realize that my medieval speech might be waaaay off, but it was the best I could do. And now we know the real reason Salazar left. Muahahahaha. I love twisting history. Anyway, the room isn't done yet. We have such a long way to go. As always, thanks to everyone who reviews. I read them and did not kill my in-laws, so that's always a plus, right? Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
P.S. We're supposed to be having a blizzard tonight (even though I'm posting this in a t-shirt with the air conditioner on). It's predicted that we'll lose power so if you don't see my posts tomorrow, that's why. I'll post as soon as I can though, so don't worry. Sorry guys. I wish I could make friends with Mother Nature, but she's a snob.
