Chapter 22
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi. Thanks, woman, you're the best!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Coming into the kitchen with Sirius, Harry took a seat across from Severus and Remus, who were deep in a talk of some kind, waited for Sirius to bring their breakfast and something to drink. Taking the tea and a glass of milk when it levitated in his direction, he took a sip of the milk then asked, snickering, “Do I want to know what you're doing?”
Chuckling, Remus smiled then said, “We are finalizing the negotiations on the map. I believe we have something worked out for it.”Handing Harry his plate, Sirius sat his own down then planted himself on the bench by his godson. After taking a bracing sip of coffee, he asked, “Alright, what do we have to do to make damned sure we aren't hexed within an inch of our lives?”“It's nothing too horrid or taxing, I assure you,” Remus told him, sipping at his tea. “First, Severus wants a copy of Harry's map, something easy enough and understandable. He also wants it updated. There are a few rooms he says he knows that aren't on there. I believe Harry may know a couple as well. He says there is also a glitch in it we need to work on fixing. From what he said, Harry can easily explain what it is and it's probably something we do need to see to before we sell the template.”Knowing what he was talking about, Harry nodded, “It does and would have helped last year, a lot, if it was there.”“What's that?” Sirius asked, looking between Snape and Harry.“It only reads the names, not suffixes like junior, senior, the third, stuff like that. It threw a lot off when I saw Crouch's name. If the junior was on there, we would have known something was wonky,” Harry explained, looking between Sirius and Remus.“It did,” Severus told them with a nod. “We couldn't figure out what in Merlin's name Crouch senior was doing in Hogwarts at odd times, though we knew he was coming and going because of the tournament. I never once thought of his son.”“We can fix that and will,” Sirius told them both firmly. “It's not something we ever considered when we did it, actually. Anything else?”“He's asking to see if we can find a way to do a wand activated spell to highlight or track certain names. That's something that would be helpful anyway,” Remus said, looking at his old partner in crime.“We can handle that,” Sirius told him as he began to dig into his breakfast.“Now, on to selling it—he had a very good idea for that. His suggestion, and it's one I think we should take, is give up the charms only, not the order we layered them. It will take Fred and George time to figure out just what we did. Not only that, they could apply the charms to something else, thus making what we're giving more valuable as it can have multiple uses. That's going to give us time before they can recreate it. Hopefully, Severus won't be teaching by the time they manage to do so. As they had the map, they'll know what's right or wrong when it comes to that area,” Remus explained. “Also, for our own protection, the name Marauders appears nowhere on anything.”“I think that'll be necessary to save us from retaliation when it comes to other teachers,” Sirius chuckled, grinning. “This is something I can easily work with. Anything else?”“Two very minor items then a few he's asking us to work on though they aren't mandatory. First, he wants a no-copy charm on his.” Remus said.“I may have to use it for something dealing with safety. If I have to pass it to Draco, I don't want him being able to copy it,” Severus explained. “I won't unless it's an emergency, but I will do so if I have to.”“We can do that,” Sirius told him with a firm nod.“Second is he wants a copy of the charms and how we layered them. He wants to create a map of Hogsmeade to help keep an eye on what's happening there. With the mess taking place, I can understand that,” Remus explained.“Not a problem, we'll give them up. Damned good idea there, Snape,” Sirius told him, taking another sip of his coffee.“We're going to have to be wary from this point forward. Whatever plans the Dark Lord had have been thrown off by what happened in court. I'm concerned about not only Draco, but other students as well,” Severus explained, folding his hands and resting them on the table.“Understandable,” Sirius nodded. “Alright, what is it you want us to work on?”“A way to detect the passages and label them if they are unusable or trapped. Harry said one is caved in and another has traps set by Filch. That I would like to know. I can use those to get in and out if I have to or employ them to get students to safety. I would like to know ahead of time if there are problems.” Severus explained, looking between the two.“We'll find something for that,” Remus told him, making a note of that on a small piece of parchment he had by his elbow. “It's another idea that's good and probably needs done to help you. What's the other?”“Try to have the map set off some kind of a signal to let me know if someone comes into the castle that doesn’t belong or is visiting. Most times that is for a legitimate reason, something I'll know by the name. I would like to know about ones that aren't,” Severus told them, looking between the two.“We'll come up with something,” Sirius told him firmly.“I think we should also ensure that the passage where the Chamber of Secrets is will also be labeled,” Remus said. “At least on Severus' copy. I am loathe to include that on the template we sell because of what it could set off when it comes to students trying to explore something that could very well be dangerous. Harry's said he doesn't know what else is down there as he didn't go exploring. I think it's best to have it there so Severus can keep an eye on it if there's an outside passage into there somewhere we don't know about. That and we may need to map it out just to be on the safe side.”“Something else we can easily do,” Sirius said as he finished his food and sent the plate to the sink. “We'll even include the password in Parseltongue, thought that won't do anyone a damned bit of good unless Harry's around.” Looking at Snape, he asked, “This all you need? And we get a promise not to end up hexed?”“It's well worth what I'll get,” Severus said honestly. “It'll not only make my job easier, but can be employed in an emergency situation. If I think of anything else that might be helpful, I'll get with you on it to see what you can do.”“It's a deal then,” Sirius said, looking at Remus, who was nodding as well. “We'll start on your copy as soon as we can and make damned sure we have it done before the term starts.”Pleased with that, Remus nodded. “That's one headache out of the way. Good.” Sipping at his tea, he then said, “We've got a couple of spanners thrown into our plans here. They're nothing major, however. First, Molly contacted us this morning. She and Arthur are going to sit the kids down today and explain what's going on with Harry. Not all of it, of course, but the basics. We can probably expect some fallout there, at least in some way. She said they're going to give up the basic facts and answer some questions, but not all. They aren't going to mention what happened with Vernon, but they will what's coming with Severus and myself. She said, and I do agree, that it's best some of this comes from them before it comes out another way.”“It is,” Sirius sighed. Reaching up and rubbing a hand over his face, he said, “Alright, no problem. It needs to come, honestly, or they're going to take it in their heads, especially Ron and Hermione, to try to figure out what the hell is going on.”“Hermione's going to get it anyway,” Harry said softly, shaking his head. Seeing looks shot in his direction, he sighed, “Look, you know what she's like. And she's more familiar with Muggle areas than the rest. With those wards, and all that's been touted about them for all this time, she's going to put two and two together then get the right answer. She might not know the whole truth, but she's going to guess enough. Then she's going to pass it along. Let's face it, no one is going to let those wards fall over something simple. We won't even mention me not going back and getting emancipation. That doesn't come for no reason and would be a last resort.”Looking at the young man, Severus groaned, then sighed. Sourly, he said, “He's right.” Shaking his head, looking at Harry, he imparted softly, “We have no way to stave it off, Harry. I'm sorry. I'd rather have them be told the facts, though not all of them, by Molly and Arthur than have Hermione and Ron nosing around in what's going on. That will uncover worse.”“Keep in mind, Harry, that you're not going to be around them,” Remus told him quietly, tone reassuring. “They can't get anything out of you if you're not talking. Let them speculate to their heart's content. Molly and Arthur won't give up the why, just that it's coming. Whatever they think they may figure out won't be confirmed by anyone. Severus and I will handle anything they ask with a very firm 'none of your business'. If they start down that road, we'll remove you, or Sirius will, then the other will handle it.”Looking at the table, Harry nodded, “Gotcha. Alright, I can deal with that, I think.”“We'll handle it,” Sirius told him, slipping an arm around his waist and giving him a squeeze. Looking at Remus and Snape, he said, “One of you needs to pass along that under no circumstances are they to bring any of this up to Harry. Tell them that if they do, they'll answer to me or Snape. And if it's Snape, Merlin help them.”“I'll pass it along,” Remus said with a firm nod. Pressing on, he said, “Secondly, the whole brood is going to Diagon Alley in a couple of days to get the books for the term and other supplies. Severus and I, both, thought that its best we tag along with them for safety's sake. He or I will stick close to Harry at all times, but I like the numbers here so we're better protected. Severus agrees. With him along, any foolishness or questions won't be brought up, or so we hope. We'll also ensure that you aren't left alone with the younger set, Harry.”“I can work with that,” Harry said, looking between the two. “Just—I don't want to deal with any of them other than Fred and George. Especially if they're being told what's going on.”“You have my word,” Severus told him firmly. “I plan to stay so close to you that it'll be like we have a sticking charm on us. We do need several things we can procure in this trip, so it's wise to go about it this way.”“We'll plan on that then,” Sirius said, finishing his coffee and refilling the cup. “That might make this easier anyway. We don't have to worry about organizing something later on.”“That was our thought on the matter,” Severus said with a nod. “The final thing is this; this afternoon I'm going to the manor so we can fill Draco in on just what is really transpiring and to prepare him. Lucius contacted me this morning and we discussed it. What we want is for the three of you to be available this afternoon so we can use the mirrors to show Draco there are no issues here and he's not being fooled. We plan to spend a couple of hours talking that way. What Narcissa and Lucius want is for him to realize just how serious this is. They are also trying to make contingency plans to stash him somewhere safe for a short time if there's a problem with the Dark Lord. As deranged as the man is getting, that's always a possibility. Their thought is, and I agree with it, that if something happens, they can send Draco over here for a few hours until they can arrange something or somewhere else to put him. Black, your room is so heavily warded that no one could detect him, no matter who is here. We can put that partition back up, like you had, and he'll be fine. That includes Moody's eye. To do that, though, we need to have the barest of bones in place when it comes to trust. As the three of us are going to vouch for you, that should start it. Interacting and seeing what we're saying is true is something we need as quickly as possible.”“We can work with that,” Sirius told him with a nod. “We'll muck about this morning to see what we can accomplish, then set the elves to cleaning what isn't dangerous. Harry and I will camp in our room after lunch then call Remus when you contact us.”“We don't want him drawn into this any more than we do Harry, so this needs done now,” Severus said, looking around. Seeing the understanding nods, he pressed on. “The day after tomorrow, Albus wants to talk to me. I don't know what about, though I have the inkling it's about Harry. With that hearing looming, he's going to try something or attempt to figure out a way to get back in Harry's good graces.” Hearing a snort from the young man and seeing him roll his eyes, Severus smirked, “I agree, Harry, but we all know he's going to try. This is something I'm going to have to play by ear to see what I can manage to find out. I'm not counting on getting much, but we may get some foreshadowing of what to be on the lookout for. I don't think anything is going to fully break loose or he’ll give up anything we can use until it becomes apparent that whatever he's doing with Harry isn't going to work. Then I'm counting on getting something. I just wanted you to know it's coming. I'll fill you in completely when I get done with him.”Taking that in, Remus nodded. “Understood, and we’ll wait to see what you can accomplish. Anything else we need concern ourselves with that's coming? Or can we press on to the normal?”“Beyond this, we can just continue on.” Severus said, looking around. “These are the only looming things other than the court date. That we're already preparing for, so it's not something new. However, Lucius did say that he wants to start coming over once a week for various reasons. That we'll work with. What he mentioned to me was spending the night. I'll get with him to see what he wants to do and go from there. Black can as well. Honestly? I like the overnight idea better than what we have been doing when it comes to him visiting. With Harry around, we're going to have more people about during the day. If he works it in this way, he can come in long after anyone would show up and leave before most would think to come over.”“Let me see what he wants to do here then we'll start planning,” Sirius said, looking at the man. “I do like that idea better than what we've been doing when it comes to him. Once I know, I'll get with you and we'll work with it from there.”“I'd suggest that if he stays the night that you do as well, Severus. Between the two of us, we can deal with anyone that might show up,” Remus said, looking at the man in black.“I can do that easily,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “At least until school starts. After that, if he wants to come over, we'll have to arrange something else. We'll work on that as the start of term looms closer.”“Alright, good. I say we start a running calendar to make damned sure we know what's coming when so we know to prepare. Something, somewhere, that no one else can see. Maybe in my room. That way we can add everything so we know what to be ready for,” Sirius said, looking around.“Good idea,” Remus said, pleased with that. “I think I know a basic template for one. We'll put one here in the kitchen that everyone can see so nothing looks off. When we start classes, we'll add those so everyone knows our schedule. Then we'll put one in Sirius' room for everything else, including Order meetings, who's going to be around when and such. That way, as things get more complicated, we don't miss schedule something.”Pleased with that idea, Severus nodded. “Minerva is coming over at some point this week to deliver the syllabus for classes. It'll probably coincide with something to do with the Order. Once we get that, we can start planning out what we have to do.”“Just a reminder to all of us that next week Fred and George will be around during the day, other than the one of the hearing. We need to keep that in mind to be careful about some things,” Sirius said, looking around.“I'm also going to take a flier here and say that the day of the hearing the whole brood will be over. That's a big step and I'm sure Molly isn't going to let it pass unnoticed,” Remus said softly.“I think she needs to,” Sirius told him, looking in his direction. “While it's something to celebrate, I don't think we want all of them over here to do it either. Too many questions are going to come up if that happens.”“Let me get with her this morning and see what I can manage. I think it might be wise if I pop over there to work on some of this and schedule that trip. I'll come up with something,” Remus told him.“I don't want them here,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “The whole bit will be stressful enough that I don't want to worry about coming home to that.”“I'll say something to her,” Remus told him. “Including that you would prefer it to go unnoticed.” Putting his hands on the table, he looked around then asked, “Anything else? If not, I'll head on over in that direction so I get it out of the way then we can press on.” Seeing head shakes from everyone around the table, he stood then said, “I'll be back soon.”Looking at Snape, Sirius asked, “How do you think it's going to go with Draco? Are you going to manage to convince him or not?”“We'll manage,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “It may just take some time and serious discussion. Everything he thought he knew about so much will have to be turned on its ear and he's going to be told different. That's going to take time. Honestly? We all should have done this sooner so as to not have let it get to where it is now. Like so much else, we've put it off and now it's going to be harder.”“We'll back you every step of the way and give you what you need as proof,” Sirius told him honestly. “Just shout and we'll do what we can.”“If it comes to that, we will,” Severus said with a nod. “Either way, he needs the facts laid out. This is—I don't want him pulled into what's coming, none of us do. Draco has been sheltered from so much of what is truly going on, understandably so, that he's just going by what's expected of him and what gets the best reaction from those he deals with. It's time that stops. He'll have to keep up appearances, like all of us have had to for so long now, but he needs to stop thinking that he's helping by doing this.” Looking at Harry, he added, quietly, “And stop the rivalry. That won't help anything.”Chuckling softly, Harry said, “Where he got the idea I was interested in you in that way, I'll never know. It's always been just what it seems. No offense, but you're not my type.”“I'm well aware of that,” Severus said with a smirk. “I don't think he saw beyond that we get along better than I do with most everyone. It's nothing you did, Harry. He's used to getting special attention from me. When you came along and got a different kind, he didn't know how to handle it. I had hoped he would just outgrow it, but it didn't happen. Now we have to deal with it. Today should end that. He may not take that you and his father are involved well, but it will stop this end. The other—he'll learn to deal with it.”“If it'll help, use the mirror and we'll sit in on the discussion. I'll make sure we're available. I plan to grab one of the dragons with no charms on it, duplicate it then work on some of the basic spells with Harry while we wait. It'll give us something to do and you won't be bothering us. We can go from there. The way Harry and I act together should drive the point home to him. I'm not going to hide that around him the way we do others because there's no point in that. It should help.”“I may suggest that when we get the basics down,” Severus nodded. “That and your relationship with Narcissa. He goes by what has to be said in public, not the reality.”“Yeah, I can see his eyes bugging out over what you call her,” Harry snickered, sipping at his tea.Grinning, Sirius said, “I've always called her that. Even in school, when alone anyway, so no one thought anything was off.”“He needs to see that too,” Severus said. “Once we get this handled, all of us are going over to the manor some night for a dinner so we can have some interaction that way. We'll come up with some excuse as to the reason we're gone. It'll only help.”“You lot set it up and we'll be fine.” Quietly, he asked, “If you could, the Wolfsbane for Remus. That's going to make everything look better when you go to court.”“I was already planning on it,” Severus told him firmly. “I'll ensure he gets it every month from here on out. We'll work out something for delivery once the term starts.”“Whatever you need as payment, let me know. I'll cover it.” Sirius told him.“Not necessary,” Severus said with a shake of his head. “Brewing it gives me a chance to see if I can't work with the potion and get it to perform better. I don't often get that chance as busy as I am.”Nodding, Sirius pressed on, “While we have you, have you seen any of the spiders about?” Seeing the man nod, he asked, “You need any of those? Though they are nasty, we can save them if you need them.”“If you can manage, yes. All you can get me. Webs and egg sacks as well if you find them. I can use them for many things. Just separate the species so I know what I'm looking at. It'll be a boon to have some of them.” Severus said honestly, looking between the two.“Dead or alive?” Sirius asked, sending Harry's empty plate and glass to the sink.“Alive preferably. If not, even dead will work. Just store them and I'll pick them up as I come over. Harry knows how to package the webs in a box so they don't become worthless.”“We'll do that,” Sirius nodded. “You need any of the other nasty things around? If you do, say something and we'll hold them back for you.”“I wouldn't frown at a couple of living doxies,” Severus told him. “Just stun them and dump them in a secure jar. Beyond that, if you find anything odd, I'll take it. If I can't use it, I'll dispose of it.”“Will do,” Sirius said. “Alright, let's see what we can find to bin and I'll set the elves on cleaning what's safe. That way we can get rid of some of this shite ahead of time and save work later.” Seeing Harry nod, he stood and stretched then headed out with Harry trailing behind.
