Chapter 22
After looking over the parchment Snape sent with some of the reports that came through the box they used to pass stuff about what Harry needed for his health, Sirius nodded, pleased. Now he just had to get with his godson on this. Though he wasn't sure if it would work, it was a damned good place to start and didn’t involve any extra potions. And Snape wanted to try it tonight. Even better.
Looking up as Harry came back in from the loo, Sirius waited for him to take a seat then said, “I have something to talk to you about. It's pertaining to what you agreed to try.”With a heavy sigh, still not liking this idea, Harry nodded. “What about it? Did you find something you think will work?” Honestly, he didn't want this to work, as childish as it sounded. Though he understood why Sirius wanted to try, he hated this 'gift' enough that he didn't want to trigger it if he didn't have to.Standing up then going over and taking a seat by Harry, Sirius slipped his arm around his shoulders then gave him a squeeze. “Maybe, we'll see. And it doesn't involve giving you anything extra.” Then he explained the idea he got just before he fell asleep. “I think that should do it. As tired and out of it as you are from what you take just before bed, I think that might be all we need.” Lowering his voice into something soothing, he added, “It'll just be me and Snape, no one else. That's all, Harry. Unless you come across with a huge prediction of some kind that we have to worry about or get word out to others, we won't say a word. Whatever we figure out, we'll get out there another way.”Sighing, Harry looked at him and nodded. “I'll let you try. I don't like it, I'm telling you that now, but we can give it a shot.”“All I ask,” Sirius told him with a smile, reaching out and ruffling his hair. “If it doesn't, next time you start the predictions, if we can't find something before then, I'm going to see if I can get your dad to talk. That might be easiest if we can't find something before then. As it's something we don't have to trigger, that might be easier on you. Just not sure we can manage there is all. In the mean time, if this doesn't do it, I'll have Snape keep looking. I'm sure he'll eventually come up with something.” Seeing Harry give a reluctant nod, though looking plenty unhappy about it, Sirius smiled at him. “Nothing to worry about. You know me, Harry. I'm not going to let anyone pull stupid shite or use you to get information. And if I knew of another way to get what I needed, I wouldn't have asked you. Even if it took a shite-tonne of work, I wouldn't. This is all I know. I'm sure Albus knows the answers to the questions I have, but there is no chance we can get it out of him and you know it.”Gazing at his godfather, Harry asked, “This relates to why he wants me back in the castle and how he's pushing for so much when it comes to me, doesn't it?”“I'm pretty sure it does,” Sirius admitted softly. “If it is, it means we'll have the knowledge we need to stop it and prove he's wrong. That will only protect you. We all know he's not going to let up, Harry, not until someone, somewhere, proves he's wrong. If we don't know what in Merlin's name is going on or the why behind it, we can't stay alert for whatever bullshite he'll pull. That and we can do all we can to make damned sure he can't. I'm sure we're going to have to enlist Rufus to step in and put a stop to plenty of it, as Albus is going to do all in his power to get you to do whatever it is since he's following that damned Prophecy.”Thinking that part over, Harry gave a slow nod as he sighed. “Understood. I agree.”“Nothing to worry about,” Sirius soothed. “I'll take on most of the questioning. I just want Snape to listen as he might come up with something that I don't think of. That might be the case as he's a bit more on the outside of this mess than we are. He sees and hears plenty we don't because he's around Albus so much. Whatever questions he might come up with, I'll have him relay them through me. That way I'm the only one asking. You know me, Harry; I won't ask anything to embarrass you. We just need help as I'm damned sure your dad knows something that can help us. Rufus wouldn't have said anything to us if he couldn't find anything. He's doing all he can to protect you and end this. You've seen that.”“I have,” Harry admitted softly. Looking back at his godfather, he asked, “We're going to try tonight?”“Yup, tonight after we would normally come up here to retire for the night,” Sirius nodded. “I'm just going to wait for the potions to start kicking in and keep you awake. Once you start getting wonky from them, we'll give it a shot.”“Just so I know what's going on,” Harry told him, already loathing the idea, but not willing to go back on his word over it.Taking that for what it was, planning to do several reassurances over the day so Harry didn't get upset or uptight over what was coming, Sirius then changed topics. “One of the things Snape said to pass along is that next week Poppy is going to come over and do what they call a check-up scan. What that entails is a complete scan to see where you are with some of this, including the brain. It's nothing to worry about, of course. That way she can see if there's progress, if something is helping or it isn't. She has to do this once in a while to see how you're coming along. That way we can not only get rid of some of the potions, if you don't need them, but she can shift others around if they aren't doing the best job. That and she can keep track of your progress as that might help determine other bits. It's nothing to concern yourself with.”Thinking that over, Harry asked, “It doesn't hurt or anything like that?”“Nope,” Sirius assured him, rubbing his head as he shook his own. “It just feels odd, from what we're told. To make sure, she'll give you something to knock you out for a couple of hours while she works. That she needs anyway to get one of the scans on your brain. This way you get a nap while she gets all she needs to track your progress. Nothing to worry about. I'll sit with you the whole time.”“That's something I can handle,” Harry told him. “She doesn't expect to find anything, does she?”“From what I know, no. You're doing fine and we're not seeing anything troubling. The headaches are something we know where they're coming from. You had the brain scan after those started and it shows nothing else wrong besides what we know. I think she just wants to see how far you're coming with some of it so she can judge if there's a way to help it move faster when it comes to the healing. That and document it so that St. Mungos knows she's doing all she can and making sure to stay on top of the situation. It's a bit like a standard checkup, nothing more.”Understanding better, Harry nodded, relaxing on the topic. “Not a problem then.”Pleased Harry wasn't stressed about that, Sirius said, “Come on, let's go downstairs and get something to eat before everyone gets worried. Besides, you have some more of that rancid shite to take and have to have food in your stomach to do that.”Grinning slightly as he grabbed his cane, Harry stood then waited to make certain he was balanced before saying, “It's definitely nasty, that's for sure.”“I can only imagine from how disgusting they smell,” Sirius laughed, standing himself. He would follow Harry down to make sure there wasn't a problem. Though Harry was doing quite well when it came to so much, it was best that he stick close, especially when he was going down the stairs. One never knew what might happen, so it was better safe than sorry.
Watching as Mr. Weasley left, Harry then grinned at the letter Sirius was holding. It was yet another from Dudley. That made him happy. He hadn't picked it up yet, as he was in the middle of breakfast, but planned to read it before delving into school work. It was a small thing, of course, but made him feel plenty good. “They are going to try to bring him over before Halloween then?” He asked, looking around. Mr. Weasley had mentioned that, but he wanted to make sure as he knew trying something like that would end up a tricky production.
“That's the plan,” Sirius told him, setting the letter down by his elbow so he could read it at his leisure. “We'll come up with a way, don't worry. As we have plenty of time before that comes, we'll get it worked out.” Gently, he added, “Arthur also wants to make sure that Dudley is filled in on just what to expect when it comes to you. We don't want him completely blindsided.”“I can easily understand that,” Harry nodded as he ate.“We also want it on a day where we have minimal people around so he's not unnerved,” Remus added with a smile. “As this goes on it won't be a problem, but we don't want him any more uptight the first time than would be considered normal.”Hearing the front door open, Harry ignored that, shoving his now empty plate away. After drinking the last of his milk, he picked up the letter to read it. It was then he was once more yanked into that place. Trying not to panic and to focus since he knew someone was coming in, he took deep breaths then kicked Sirius as hard as he could, hoping his godfather got the hint to get him out of there before someone they didn't want to know about this nightmare encountered it. Breathing deeply, he tried to hold off what was coming, hoping it worked so they could get out of there before it happened.Yelping at the hard kick to his shins as Tonks came in, Sirius turned to Harry to see what was going on. Taking in how he was holding the letter and the look on his face, what was going on then connected. Shite! They did not need this in front of Tonks! Standing quickly, he grabbed Harry's cane then said, “Lucius, can you give me a hand?” He just wanted Harry out of there as fast as he could before his godson started talking. Though he was sure that Remus could keep Tonks from saying something, he didn't want to chance it.Taking in what was going on, Lucius quickly stood then helped Sirius get Harry to his feet and start leading him out.Heart hammering, quickly figuring out what was going on, Remus gave the bewildered Tonks, someone who had taken a seat next to him, a rub on the back, he soothed, “Nothing to worry about. They have it under control. Just give them some time to make sure he's fine.” It was his hope she would just assume that it was health related and not worry too much.Seeing that Remus and Narcissa didn't seem overly upset or concerned, Tonks nodded, “I just wanted to check in and pass along some info on Death Eater activity we've heard. I can't stay long as I have to get to work, but you lot can get it to Albus better than I can.” Then she began to relay what she and Kingsley had picked up.
Quickly getting Harry into the parlor they used for working with spells for schoolwork, Sirius had Lucius ward it the best he could to keep the sound from escaping once they shut the door. After helping Harry into one of the chairs, Sirius crouched in front of him and waited, taking Harry's hand and holding it. “You're safe now and no one can overhear,” he told his godson softly, pleased as hell that Harry had managed to hold off on saying anything until they were in a safe place where he could come across with it.
Breathing deeply, skin crawling as he knew what was coming, Harry told him, voice slurred and uneven, “Someone needs to go to the woods between Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. Percy is there. He's dead. It's a message to all Blood Traitors to let them know he's coming for them. The Order members are first, but he's going to strike at all of those he considers Blood Traitors. He wants to wipe out the family lines and will get them alone.”“Shite,” Sirius muttered, face going white as the blood drained out of it. Looking over his shoulder at Lucius, he said, “Go get in contact with Moody, Rufus and Albus. I'm sure you'll come up with something for the reason. Get them there, now.”“I will,” a pale and shaking Lucius told him before sweeping out and heading to get the mirror. Already he was formulating how to do this. Rufus would be first then Alastor. He thought it was best to let Alastor handle Albus, though the man needed warned so he could get the word out. All he was thankful for was that Arthur was gone. It was best the man hear this in another way.Focusing back on Harry, Sirius tried to think what else to ask about the mess. He wanted to talk to James, of course, but he needed to give plenty of fair warning. “Is there anyone else in immediate danger? Do you know?”Panting heavily by then, Harry told him, shivering, “Andromeda. He wants to strike at Narcissa. Bella's husband wants revenge for his wife's death, so he is stalking her.”“We'll make sure she stays safe,” Sirius assured him, already planning to give a warning to her. “Is there anything else we need to know, Harry?” He hoped there was so that they could help all they could before this grew worse. If not, he would see what he could do to talk to James. If he could manage this way, it would save the stress on Harry of trying to force the issue.“The park is dangerous. Tell everyone to stay out of it. They are hiding and waiting, trying to see who all is Order members. Snape needs to stay wary or they will see him.” Harry told him, shivering. Though he didn't like this feeling, he knew what he was being told to say would protect plenty.Taking that in with a nod, knowing they now had to do plenty to tend to keeping them safe, Sirius said, “We'll handle it. Nothing to worry about. Anything else?” He looked up when he heard the door open and Remus come in, then he went back to focusing on Harry. Seeing a shake of Harry's head, Sirius took on a soothing voice, “Harry, I need to talk to your dad. Can you make it to where I can talk to James? Remus is here. You know he won't say a word about any of this to anyone. It's really important, Harry. This will be easier on you if we can do it this way.” Glancing over his shoulder, he told Remus, “You say nothing about what he might come across with, alright?”“Not a word, Sirius,” Remus assured him, coming over to crouch down by his old friend, waiting to see what was going on. He had managed to get Tonks out of here without her suspecting anything and Narcissa was now taking charge of handling anyone that might come in until Harry pulled out of this.Panting heavily, eyes locking on Sirius', Harry tried to sort through the nudges that were poking him, calling for his dad. He wasn't sure if he could manage this, but he was going to try. After what seemed like forever and having to almost battle off some hard nudges that didn't relate to anything that they were dealing with, his dad came up and sat beside him. Panting heavily, he slurred out, “He's here and says that the Horcrux bit relates to my scar. That's what was in it. It's gone now, but Dumbledore doesn't know it’s gone. You have to protect me until he realizes it is as he's going to try to draw me in. The part of that prophecy that pertains to me is over. Someone else can now end the mess. I've fulfilled my part.”Taking that in and honing in on it, Sirius said, putting a hand on Harry's cheek, “Good. Tell him we'll make sure to protect you until he pulls his head out.” He was feeling sick that Harry had had one of those disgusting, evil things in his scar, but was relieved that it was gone. “Does he know how many more are out there? That or where we can look to find them?”“Four are gone,” Harry told him in that same slurred, uneven voice. “The one in me, the diadem, Quirrell and that diary I destroyed. There are four more. One is in this house.”Heart hammering at what Harry listed, Sirius wasn't sure what to ask, but pressed on the best he could. “Where in the house? Does he know? And what is it?”“Dad says that it's a locket and it's in Kreacher's cupboard. Your brother was trying to destroy it, but couldn't. He said to tell you Regulus did the right thing in the end and it cost him his life. Tell Kreacher that you need to finish his mission and he'll give it up.”“We'll do that,” Sirius told him with a sad smile. “Where are the rest, does he know?”“One is in a shack, hidden. It has to do with the Gaunts. The other is a cup and it's in Bella's vaults. He says to tell Rufus to seize the vault and take it. It's from Helga Hufflepuff. Something he also says is that though he's giving you the locations, it's not as easy as just getting them. To be careful.”“We will, tell him that. We'll have Rufus take it over.” Thinking quickly, he asked, “What is the last one? We need to find them all.”“The last one is the hardest and you won't be able to get to it until there is a confrontation with Voldemort. It's Nagini. He made her one. Dad said when you start destroying the remaining ones, that he's going to know and will go completely mad. So, you have to be careful and get them before he realizes what you're doing. One has curses on it, so be careful.”“I'll get all the information to Rufus so he can take over looking, other than the one in this house,” Sirius assured him, trembling at the information he was getting. This was huge and not what he expected, but it would help, tremendously. “Is there anything else we need to know? Tell him I promise all of us in the house, plus Rufus, Snape and Moody will make sure you're protected until Albus pulls his head out.”“You need to do that dad says, as it's going to get worse from here on out,” Harry told him. Feeling like his dad was at the end of what he had to say, he waited as there was one more thing his dad told him he wanted to get across. Listening to what his dad was telling him, Harry said, “Dad says you have to make the first move or it's going nowhere. To remember what he said in that dream, as it's real. You're on the right track.” Harry wasn't sure what that meant, but his dad wanted him to tell Sirius, because it sounded important. So, he would. “He said the foot in the door will come soon and you'll know it when it does. Just go from there.”Blindsided that would come out, though thankful James was cryptic enough that neither Harry nor Remus would get it, he said, “I will, I swear it.”“You'll do fine, don't worry, dad says,” Harry imparted before his dad gave him a quick hug then vanished. Pulling out of the trance, Harry shook worse than normal then slumped, feeling tired from that as it was a long bit.Inching closer to Harry, Sirius wrapped his arms around him then said, “It's fine. What we got is definitely information we need, Harry. That's going to save plenty of lives.” Standing up, he sat on the arm of the chair then held his godson close. Kissing him on top of the head, he looked at the stunned Remus then told him, “We need Alastor, now. You heard plenty we need to get across, but we also have to warn Andromeda because she's a specific target. And we have people lurking in the park. One of those we need to get in touch with is Snape so he knows to Apparate onto the steps. We all do, from the sound of it. That and check those maps. I'm not sure why they aren't showing up, but they aren’t. I assume it's because they are just out of range of the map. Which means, we need to tweak it again. We also need to figure out a way to get this information out without saying Harry gave it.”“I'll go contact Alastor.” Remus said, still wide-eyed.“Lucius was going to, so go find him. Between the two of you, you can figure out how to go about this. Tell Alastor it was from Harry. He'll understand and go from there. I'll give him everything I was told.” Internally, he added 'but the last bit'. As that was personal and he doubted Remus or Harry knew what James was referring to, there was no need.“Let me go tend to that. Get with Narcissa and tell her that we won't be tending to classes today. I'm sure we're about to have a ton of company and plenty to do.” Remus said. Seeing Sirius nod, he hurried out to find Lucius. He wasn't sure just what to do, thinking it best to rely on Alastor's judgment to deal with that, but he wanted to do something to get in touch with Tonks so she could find her mother then make sure she was safe. That he would wait on, though, as Alastor might know a better way.Looking at his trembling godson, Sirius held him close. “We're fine, Harry. It's another bit that was good for you to come across with. I'm sure you saved plenty, including Snape. That's worth it, isn't it?”“It is,” Harry admitted, happy it was over. “I think I need something to drink. I'm thirsty. And a bit tired.”“I'll help you into the kitchen and we'll go from there. I'm sure we're about to have a house full of people.” Standing, he helped his godson up then began to lead him to the kitchen. Mind all over about what he heard, it honed in on the last bit. Though James was cryptic, he knew what it meant and was pleased with what he had learned. Now he would just wait for the signal and go from there.Pushing that aside, he focused on all he had been told, especially the part about his brother. Once everything settled, he would see what he could do with Kreacher to get that moving and find what was in this house.
