Chapter 22
Looking around as they stepped into the foyer of their new house for the first time, Sirius nodded, grinning. This was wonderful. It was clean, felt wonderful, was bright, cheery and just what they needed. While it was typical of such places with the setup and such, it was different in that there were no awful memories here, no dark taint, no creepy feeling. None of that. Just a clean, peaceful atmosphere.
Hands on Harry's shoulders, Sirius guided them further in and grinned. The goblins, and whoever they contracted for this, did an amazing job. The color scheme Harry had picked out went well with the place and it went with the rest, well, as far as he could see so far. Nodding, he said to both Remus and Harry, “This is perfect.”“It is,” Remus told him, gazing around. “I say we start on the fourth floor and work our way down to see what is where. It's my understanding that's where our bedroom is.”“We can do that,” Sirius nodded, giving Harry's shoulders a squeeze. “The wards and Fidelius are in place? With no one else allowed in?”“In place,” Remus assured him with a smile. “I'm the Secret Keeper, of course. The goblins fortified this house the best they could as they know what's coming. The three of us are the only ones keyed into the wards at the moment, though I'm sure that will change at some point.”Skirting around them, Remus motion them to follow, leading the way. “You will love this. We still have some work to do, of course, but nothing that's overly daunting. More like just making it ours and deciding what to do with some of the space as I doubt we'll end up with many guests. We'll find something pleasant, I have confidence in that.”Following Harry up the stairs, Sirius stopped and gazed at the pictures there. Unlike Grimmauld Place and so many others, these weren't paintings. Instead, they were photographs. They were of James and Lily, him, Harry and Remus, all at various stages of their lives. Smiling, looking down at Harry, who was doing the same, he said, softly, “I like this.”Coming up beside the two, smiling himself at what he saw, Remus nodded, “I thought it was a nice addition to the place, so I took it upon myself to have the elves tend to it with pictures we had. You'll need a portrait done, of course, Sirius, because of your place in the House of Black. As will Harry, but this will be fine until then.”“We can put that off as I'm in no hurry there,” Sirius told him, slowly walking up the stairs and looking at everything there. “Besides, we need one of you as well, and the three of us because of the bonding. If we're being tortured like that, you're suffering right along with us, Remus!”Chuckling at that when he heard Harry snicker, Remus shook his head, “Understood, Sirius. We'll tend to it at some point.” Pressing on from that topic, he said, “The elves don't have everything moved yet, but they do have the majority, making sure it was all the important things. They are saving the last of the bits and bobs we don't need for when they finish with what we have to have. So, it's not all in place, but most of it is. Keep that in mind. And they tended to the linens already. They were hard at it from the time we got the confirmation. So, we'll be fine by the time we're ready to go back to Grimmauld Place for you to sign it over and me to tend to the Fidelius.”“Good,” Sirius said with a nod. “I don't want to be back over there any longer than we have to and want this up so we can wash our hands of the other.”“That will be tended to just how you want, Sirius,” Remus assured him, still leading the way up the stairs. “After five today, it won't be yours anymore. The only time we'll have to return is for Order meetings, if we attend those. This will be home.”“And that will be wonderful,” Harry added softly as he took in everything while they continued up the stairs. “Our home.”“Our home,” Sirius grinned, giving his shoulder a squeeze. And that felt wonderful to say. Theirs and only theirs, one they could make their own without the history that dogged them from other places. Their fresh start.
Sitting at the kitchen table of their new home, Sirius was holding Harry close while they all sipped butterbeers. Looking at the mass of papers there, he asked, “Do we have everything we need? I want to make sure before we go over there and sign the place over.”
“We do,” Remus assured him. Picking up the first, he said, “This is the binding agreement for Albus to take over Grimmauld Place. Most of the paperwork for the sale is through, so it's not an issue of him not getting it, more to ensure he doesn't default. We're not worried about this, of course, but it's a standard.” Picking up the others that were there, he held them up and said, “And these are all the ones you need to sign to trigger everything else. I made sure we had them all in place.”“Good,” Sirius nodded. “Who all is meeting us there? I know Albus and Arthur, but we need a third person as you two can't witness them.”“Minerva,” Remus told him with a smile. “As she's the one that you said you didn't have a problem with, I took it upon myself to agree to having her do it.”“That's fine,” Sirius nodded, seeing Harry do the same. “Harry's going to stay as Little Paws to hold off issues, of course.” Sighing, looking at the mass of paperwork there, he asked, “They know there is a tight timeline for doing this, right?”“They are well aware,” Remus nodded. “I got with Albus and he knows what you're going for, so he's going to make sure they are signed just how you set them up. He's also quite pleased how you're going about it. Once it's done, he'll wait for us to get home then not only get Grimmauld Place back up, but send out word of what's coming tomorrow morning to everyone. He even has a meeting with Rufus after Ministry hours so he knows the time to bunker down has come.”“Good,” Sirius told him, pleased. “Because I'm betting hell will hit first thing in the morning. It might not for the one, but I'm betting Batty Bella is going to know right off the bat.”Quietly, Remus added, “The goblin I've been working with is also quite pleased they have all night to put in plenty of measures to protect themselves as well. It tells them what to expect and they can deal accordingly.”“Didn't think of that, but I get it,” Sirius nodded. Sighing, he said, “Hell is coming. Thankfully, we’ll be safe from the worst of it.”“Quite safe,” Remus assured him. “Only a select few even know where this is, Sirius, unlike Grimmauld Place. We can blend in easier around here with the mix of people that are in this part of town. While it's best we don't go among our kind unless forced, we can get out and have some fun.”“Safe is good,” Harry said softly, nodding. This was making him feel better. As he was so tied to Sirius and Remus, the feelings from Sirius about Grimmauld Place were affecting him heavily, more than it did Remus. That didn't help anything. It was his hope that this move would lighten the load he was dealing with and get him in a far better place faster. He was sure it would help Sirius.“We've ensured that we are to the best of our ability,” Remus assured him with a smile. Checking the time, he said, “We need to get to Grimmauld Place. They will be there shortly.”Waiting for Harry to change after nodding, Sirius then picked up Little Paws and held him close. As he did, though, he smiled. This would be the last time he would be forced into that house. Anything coming from here on out would mean he was going into it as a guest, not the owner. And that felt wonderful.
Settled at the table at Grimmauld Place, Albus signed the contract with a flourish then had Minerva and Arthur witness it. Smiling, he was most pleased with this. It meant that they could shift everything completely here tonight and prepare. What it also meant was they had somewhere to put people who were in real danger and had nowhere to go that was safe. It was perfect as far as he was concerned.
When it was witnessed, something that activated it automatically, he and Sirius put their wands on it then it vanished, going to Gringotts where it was automatically filed. Folding his hands on the table, he gave a relieved nod. “Tended to. This is good. We'll change everything over and I'll take control of the wards before I go.”“Remus will handle that with you,” Sirius told him softly, happy that those here weren't setting off problems for him and Harry. Harry was calm as Little Paws. Holding him probably helped as well. As long as it worked, he didn't care.“Now, there were other bits you needed witnessed?” Albus asked, looking around.“It's the first of the papers to set this on fire,” Remus told him, pulling out what was there. “We're doing it now as Gringotts is officially closed and no customers will be allowed in. The goblins will be there for another hour, so they will officially activate it. However, no one will be the wiser until the morning. That gives all of us from the time they are signed until the morning to prepare. We assumed that would help.”“Immeasurably,” Albus told them honestly with a nod.“Come morning, all involved will get an owl stating the vaults affected are locked down until the final papers are signed. Some nothing will change with, like Bella and her husband. Lucius—it may, depending on what we negotiate,” Sirius explained, glancing around. “Once I sign and you witness, it's in effect.”“This can only help, Sirius,” Minerva told him with a determined thread in her voice. “More than you'll ever know.”“I figured it could, you just need to give it time and expect hell. Plenty are going to go mental, not just You-Know-Who,” Sirius explained, looking around. “Bella is someone you all need to worry about just as much as you do that evil arse. You know what she's like. I guarantee she's not going to handle this well.”“We'll deal accordingly,” Albus assured him with a placating gesture. “All the three of you need to worry about is keeping yourselves safe and getting into the place you need. Nothing more. Let us take on handling the fallout. I'll get with Rufus tonight, as he's always there late anymore, and let him know you activated it. He can also help and will step up what he does.”“You do what you need to,” Sirius told him. “We'll stay out of it until we have to do something.”“How long before all the provisions go into place?” Arthur asked, glancing around. “I know there are more than this, as you explained what you were going to do.”“A couple of months,” Sirius told him. “The biggest will come fast, but some, like the Wizengamot, will come last. They are the ones that will take the most time to implement because of so much.”“While that will help, immeasurably, what comes before that will more,” Albus told him honestly. “We need this, desperately. It cuts the knees out from under so of much of what Tom can do. While he uses plenty of underhanded methods to get some of it, the money drying up will hurt him in ways I doubt he’ll realize until it's gone.”“I think it will do more than that,” Minerva added quietly. “While the money, especially from Lucius, will hurt, I'm sure that Lucius is going to choose Draco over He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Pulling the clout and contacts Lucius has out of his grasp will throw him completely off. We know how much he's been able to pull because of what Lucius can manage. Fudge was a huge example of that. It's going to give the right side plenty of leverage.”“A very true assessment,” Albus agreed. “I'm not sure what we can do to learn what Lucius knows about so much, but we might be able to manage, or possibly Rufus can. Lucius has to know that choosing Draco will paint a target on him like nothing else will and I doubt he's going to try to go it alone.” As he said that, he made a mental note to bring that up to Rufus tonight when he went to see him. Rufus had things he could pull out that the rest of them didn't.“The only thing I'm wiggling on is Draco. That's it.” Sirius told him honestly. “I refuse on everything else. Cissy is out of the House of Black. That marriage is gone. Let's see what he does with that. It’s his choice now.”“I think, despite my feelings for Lucius, that he will choose his wife and son,” Arthur added. “I don't like him, or what he does, but he does love them both, dearly. If he does, that helps us plenty.”“We can only hope,” Remus sighed. Pushing the papers in front of Sirius, he folded his hands on the table and waited. While this was the right thing to do, he knew what was coming from it and was apprehensive.Grabbing the quill, holding Harry close, Sirius signed the first then passed it over. Grinning, he then began signing the others, passing them over for the witnesses. While there was apprehension over some of this because of what would come, he loved what he just did. The time of dealing with the bullshite had ended. It was now a new beginning and change was coming. That was worth it.
Picking up the paperwork that had just come in, Clamperteeth, the head of the London branch of the bank, looked it over with a practiced eye. The first wasn't much, just about Grimmauld Place. That was easy enough and what they were prepared for as Mr. Lupin had told them it was coming. Sending it along to the proper department, he then picked up the rest.
Though he had heard these were coming, it was still stunning to see them in his hands. Quickly reading through what was there, he gave a slow nod. Yes, it was good they arrived this late. Not only was it a big job to handle, but they had fair warning to prepare.Paperwork still in hand, he walked out to the main floor of the office and summoned everyone. When they were assembled, he looked around and said, “All of you can expect to be here most of the night.” Though there were murmurs about that, there was no grumbling, something he honestly didn't expect. Pressing on, he explained, “We have many vaults to lock down tonight, by an official legal order. They are ones that are ancient, so that will take time. Then we have the task of fortifying ourselves and putting up the protections we've been talking about for some time as the wizards look like they are once more going to war. That time has come, gentlemen. We can expect to be drawn into the conflict. While it won't be nice, we learned from the last war and can protect ourselves. While you work, I'll be notifying the main office so they can prepare.”“What vaults are we locking down?” Griphook asked, sure this was big and he wanted to know so he could figure out just what needed done to tend to the task as some were harder than others.Looking around, standing straight, Clamperteeth said, “Malfoy and Lestrange. All of those involved in the family. All. Of. Them. The exception is one vault from Malfoy and the two for the Lestrange brothers that are theirs. Any family vaults, vaults for spouses, children, all of them are ordered locked down.”Hearing the loud, excited talk, he explained, “The order comes in from the House of Black dealing with the two spouses and children. Gentlemen, I'm sure all of you know what this means, so we need to get on it now. The official word won't go out until morning, which gives us time to not only tend to the order, but protect ourselves. So, we need to get on it as fast as we can.” Then he began barking out orders for not only the vaults, but security measures. As he did, he quietly thanked Lord Black for giving them the time they needed.
Settling into the chair in front of Rufus' desk, Albus jumped right in, not waiting for pleasantries. Handing over a copy of all Sirius had signed, he said, “We have until the morning before those affected are notified. The goblins are already working on locking it down and doing what they can for themselves when it comes to protection. Which means we are probably in for all of this setting on fire.”
Picking up the official papers, Rufus nodded and gave a grim smile. “I'll call in those I need and start preparing. This can only help us.”“It can,” Albus said, settling back, tucking his purple robes around his crossed knees. “There was something brought up tonight when we talked to Sirius that you might need to know and can help with, if you can manage it.”“What's that,” Rufus asked, leaning back, already calculating what needed set in motion. Come tomorrow, they were going to some extreme security measures for not only the Ministry itself, but other places as well. This was going to take time, but he was happy to do it. The plans were already in place for what was coming, so he just wanted to make sure beyond that.“Lucius,” Albus told him then walked him through what was said on the topic. “I do tend to agree that he's going to choose Draco. He may put up the front of a cold being, but he loves his son. If he does, I think he is ripe for you to step in and get information from because I doubt even Malfoy Manor can protect him from the wrath coming from the other side.”Taking that in and thinking it over, Rufus then gave a slow nod. “Yes—it's something workable. Let me see what I can manage once the negotiations start. If you let me know when they begin, I can owl Sirius with some proposals he can use to push Lucius. The man has to know what hell is coming his way if he does that.”“The way to go, yes,” Albus nodded, smiling. Pressing on, he said, “A couple more suggestions, if I may.” Seeing Rufus motion him to go on, he continued, “First, you may want to find something, somewhere to create a safehouse for the family. Well, probably others as well. I know there were a few during the last war, but I'm not sure if they've been used since then, so they will need not only cleaned up, but refortified.”Jotting that down, Rufus nodded, “Let me see what's still around or if they were sold off. If they were, I'll find something we can use.” Pleased with that suggestion, though wary as it was Albus making it and he always had an agenda, he was wondering about the why behind it.Nodding, Albus told him, “The next bit is tricky and I'm not sure if you can manage, but you might want to try.” Before Rufus could ask, he said, softly, “Though I do hate the idea, you may want to see about arresting Draco as fast as you can. Toss him into Azkaban in a safe place. That will stop him from making a foolish choice he may end up paying the rest of his life for. And you could use it as leverage to get Lucius moving how you want. I do understand using children as pawns is distasteful, but a source tells me that Tom is already looking at Draco to use him. It's much better to have him out of his grasp in Azkaban, especially since the Dementors are gone, than being forced into something heinous by Tom. If you get with Sirius, he might be able to use getting Draco out as leverage to push this the way you need, Rufus.” Sighing heavily, he gave a sad shake of his head and added, “I'm sure young Draco will give you an excuse to arrest him as he's not likely to heed the warnings he's been given.”Staring at the old man, Rufus thought that over. He did agree it was distasteful to go about it that way, but Draco was of the age that he was considered an adult in their world, thus responsible for his actions. And sometimes you had to do things that you didn't like to stop worse from going on. Lucius, and the information he had, was something that could probably save many lives. That was well worth one spoiled young man learning a lesson he wasn't likely to ever forget. “Let me see what I can manage. We'll go from there. If I can pull it off, I'll owl Sirius to see what we can agree on with it.”“I'll get with him as well. He did say that Draco's bastard status is the only thing he's willing to compromise on. I'm sure he can sweeten the pot for Lucius and it won't look odd,” Albus added, happy with the way this was going.“Let me see what we can manage,” Rufus told him. “If he puts a toe out of line, we'll nail him. That I don't want out to the masses, Albus. I don't want him tipped off.”“I assure you that it won't get back to him,” the aging Headmaster told him with a nod of his head.Tossing his quill down on the desk, Rufus groaned then said, “Anything else you have for me that can help with this nightmare?” He was hoping to wheedle more out of the man so they could end this mess before it grew into a nightmare of epic proportions. Albus might have some that could help, so he wanted it.“Actually, yes,” Albus sighed, pulling a small journal out of his pocket. “There is something that needs tended to before we can truly get rid of Tom. I have several working on it, but you might be able to help more.” Putting the journal on the table, he asked, “Have you ever heard of a Horcrux?” He assumed he had, what with his position in the Ministry for so long. When Rufus nodded, looking wary, he then began to explain Tom's plan for immortality.
