Chapter 22
After settling in his normal comfortable chair in the room he shared with Sirius, Harry asked, “What do I need to know?” It was late afternoon, after he had woken for the day and had his brekky. The two said they had to talk to him about something. Plus, he wanted to get with them about what he learned from Toonie.
“Nothing much, honestly,” Remus told him, sitting down himself with a bit of a groan. “Just something we worked out that can only help all three of us.”“I managed to get Albus to agree to pass along everything the 'research' part of the Order is coming up with on the hunt for you,” Sirius said. “Nothing anyone is saying, and plenty are hopping mad he's pressing on with the search for you, is deterring him. While he keeps swearing it's to protect you if you need it, we know better. So, we thought this was the best way to keep tabs on what he's doing. I used the excuse that you're my godson and I have a right to know. Then I tossed out there if they do find you, I might have the best shot of talking you into whatever without you completely blowing your stack.”Once he thought it over and took a sip of his coffee, PJ nodded, “That's fine. Sounds like the best way to go about this.” Then he sighed and added, “As long as they don't withhold anything. You know some of them, Sirius. Especially if that old man has made it clear he wants me found.”“We know,” Remus conceded with a deep sigh and shake of his head. “It's the best we can manage. Our thought was, between the three of us, we can piece something together, even if they are hiding parts. At least we'll get some warning. We know they are trying to trace T, though having no luck. Hermione told me she thought if someone could track her down, they could get some clues, even if she won't talk.”“Oh, T won't and they wouldn't like dealing with her if they do find where she's staying,” PJ told him with a deep chuckle and a grin. “They won't, trust me. She might not know magic, but they will feel chewed up and spit out, then she'll call the Swiss version of the DMLE on them. She will not play.”“The house she's in is where I was supposed to stay. I made sure I had every protection put on it I could then hired others to put on more. It's safer than this place. Not to mention the town she's in is the sort that will keep whatever to themselves, another bit I made sure of. I knew what I was facing when I bought it, so I wasn't going anywhere that would put me in danger. The Swiss laws alone make it to where no one, even if they get a clue she's there, can get into records. I picked that country for a reason. However, I'll make sure she knows to stay alert.” He then added.“It's for the best,” Sirius nodded. “We have pictures of most of the Order members. I'll give them to you to pass along so she has an idea who to look out for.”“Something I'll do,” PJ assured him.“We also learned Severus is going to start helping with the research,” Sirius groaned, running both hands through his hair and leaning back. “He can't do much on some bits because he has to make it look like he's on the evil git's side. Since he knows plenty, he agreed to help. I'm sure Albus wants him to so he can pass false leads to the other side.” Seeing an exasperated look on PJ's face, he added, “Running that evil arse in circles is a damned good idea. Let him follow false leads. If he's chasing shadows, he's not going to find you.”“True,” PJ admitted with a groan. “I just don't like the idea.”“I can't say I blame you there,” Remus admitted with a shake of his head. “However, realistically, you need to realize he's probably looking for you as well. While you've made it clear you want nothing to do with this mess, he won't be content to just let it go. If he could find you and you're alone, with no protection, he would see it as getting rid of a huge problem. Spinning him in circles and having him chase false leads keeps him from stumbling across something that may lead to you.”“Yeah, I see the point there,” PJ sighed, slumping. “Just let me know what you find out. Hermione is bad enough with this mess. We all know how good she is. Combine her and Snape—well, it has me a tad worried.”“And neither of us can blame you for that either,” Sirius told him softly. After leaning forward and putting his elbows on his knees, he looked at PJ then said, “We were going to suggest you dig up every bit of dirt you can on those two and save it in case you need to use it. Not on the hunt for Harry, but if they get too close to you or Du Bois. I'm sure the two will back down if you can toss enough at them and make it clear it's not a place they want to go unless they want some serious fallout from it. Yes, it's a form of blackmail, I get that, but in this situation, you might have to use it.”“I have plenty, on both of them,” PJ admitted with a chuckle. “Hermione—not so much, really. I have what was passed to me and what I know. Snape is a whole other matter. There is plenty I have, and some I'm still researching, he does not want put out there for the world to see.”“When it comes to this situation, I agree with Sirius; use it if you have to,” Remus said. “Normally, I would suggest going about it another way, but this is a delicate dance we do not want either of them getting wind of. One slip could expose who you are, in more ways than one.”“I'll gather what I can,” PJ told him. Then, changing topics when it appeared they were done, PJ summoned the notes he printed out from the talk with T. “Speaking of which, there is something I want to show both of you and pick your brains about,” he said, taking the papers as they came into his hand. Before he started, after they told him to go on, he said, tone firm, “First, I need your assurances it not only stays between just us, but you keep your cool over it. I have no way of explaining yet how I would have gotten the information you're about to see. It would trace right back to T, me and mum. Until I can find a way, if I can, it can't get out there.”After agreeing, Sirius asked, highly curious, “What's this about?”“Snape and Mum,” PJ told him honestly. “I was hoping you both would have more information than what T did on the topic.” He then lowered his voice and added, tone containing a heavy sigh, “And there is something in here I very much doubt you know. If you did, it would have affected plenty. From what I've seen, it hadn't. I highly doubt anyone but a certain old man knows this tidbit of information.”“We'll keep it to ourselves,” Remus assured him. Then he asked, “What do you mean it would affect plenty? How does it relate to anything?”“As long as you keep your cool, I'll show you rather than try to explain. You'll get part of it from these notes, but I'll have to walk you through the rest.” PJ told him. Once more looking at Sirius, he added, “I mean it; no blowing your stack. It won't help anything as this was years ago. Knowing won't change a damned thing.”“You have my word,” Sirius agreed, though was now really wondering what in Merlin's name, PJ had unearthed.PJ figured there would be some show of temper if the two didn't know who gave that Prophecy over initially, but would take them at their word. Passing over a copy of the notes he took, he then explained how he came about the information.
“We had no fucking clue it was him,” an outraged Sirius snarled as he paced back and forth. They had just finished reading what T said and PJ explained how he found out who passed over the Prophecy all those years ago. “I mean none! Albus never told us. I'm sure he's the only one, besides Snape, who still knows.”
“Mum never mentioned it?” PJ asked, looking between the irate Sirius and pale Remus. “She said in the letter to T that the old man told her because she had been friends with Snape for so long. I'm not sure Dad even knew.”“No, no one ever told us,” Remus sighed, shaking his head in a sad way. “James—if he had known, he would have said something as I'm sure knowing Severus was involved would have sent him over the edge. With him being an Auror at the time, he would have passed it along so Severus was arrested.”“Bloody fucking hell,” Sirius snapped, stopping his pacing and looking between the two. “There was no hint, none. We knew the Prophecy was passed, obviously, as it's the reason they went into hiding, but not who did it. I assumed it was Peter since he betrayed them. While I didn't know how he would have managed to get his grubby hands on the damned thing, it was the only person I could think of.”“It was mine as well,” Remus agreed with a nod. “We—well, we all knew Severus had joined that side. It was quite clear. Later on, when Albus stood up for him when the trials were going on, we all assumed he was spying even then, that some event had changed his mind. We had no idea he was the one that passed it along or what he knew about so much.”“I was wondering,” PJ admitted, looking between the two. “Really, I didn't see both of you playing nice with him if you knew he's the one that painted the target on mum and dad.”“I sure as hell wouldn't have,” Sirius told him, tone cold. “Others in the Order wouldn't have either. It's one thing to deal with him as a spy, but a whole other to know he set them up to die.”Knowing Sirius needed to get himself under control, Remus changed topics slightly then asked, “Explain why you're digging into this. Is there a reason or just because you stumbled on the information in your mother's letters.” He hoped this would get Sirius focused elsewhere. Well, honestly, and it would him as well. Though the betrayal happened so long ago, it didn't mean the information didn't upset him plenty, especially because of Severus' attitude about so much.“I found it in the letters,” PJ admitted. “Not sure why I want to know beyond that, honestly. T knew some, as you can see from the notes. I was just curious to know what else some might be aware of and if any of you did know. It's not something I see a story coming from, honestly, as I don't foresee any way of getting the information out of anyone but T. And I'm sure not letting anyone use Mum's private letters for an article. Just – I think I’m trying to understand more of what happened all those years ago. All I had over the years were bits and pieces. I've learned more since moving in here, obviously, but not too much. Most I've garnered from research on the other areas.” With a shrug, he added, “I just want to understand it all. And Snape? I'm curious as to why he's spying. There's something a tad fishy there. If he is the one that gave over that Prophecy, he had to know what would come of it. And I don't see how he could have been spying when he did give it over.”Sirius thought over what PJ just said and understood most of it, so he nodded. “True. Not sure when he became a spy, actually, or why. You have me there. I get he was plenty mad at your mother by then, especially since he knew she married James.”“T said she thought Mum was scared of Snape by then.” After picking up his copy of the notes, he pointed them to the section where they talked about it. When he finished, he shook his head and added, “That doesn't seem like he was spying then.”“No, it doesn't,” Remus admitted, smoothing down his mustache after reading through the relevant section again. “My guess? It was after he gave it over. Maybe he realized just what he had done by then. We know he—well, I'm sure Severus loved your mother. She was his only friend for so long. We do know he tried to repair the relationship, but Lily wouldn't let him. From what she told us, his fascination with the Dark Arts and how he never denied he was going to join the Death Eaters was the final straw for her. She knew what a target she was. Even in school, she had real problems with some that later became Death Eaters or followed the Pureblood nonsense because she was so smart. We did hear, especially after she started going out with James, there were plenty of threats leveled at her.”With a loud groan, Sirius flopped back in his chair. Head going back, eyes sliding shut, he said, “Look, we will both admit, especially me, we were rotten in school, especially to Snape. He was—well, he was his own kind of rotten. It doesn't make it right, but we were. Let's face it; all of us did things as teenagers we aren't real proud of. We're in that category as well. It comes down to we grew up and changed. So did your Dad. Snape—in many ways, he hasn't. He's the same as he's always been in some ways. In others, he's worse. You know what he was like when he taught. He's a great bullying git. From what we hear, he's not changed one iota since you vanished. If anything, he's grown worse because of the pressure he's under. Even if he is doing the right thing now, I'm not sure if he's doing it because it's right or if he was pressured into it.”After taking in what Sirius said, PJ processed it then sighed. “I don't know how to find out why he's spying. Do either of you? I mean, have you ever heard anything?”“Nothing,” Remus told him with a shake of his head. “All we've ever heard was Albus' assurances he is a spy. Nothing more. We knew Albus assured the Ministry he was a spy in the last war as plenty wanted him in Azkaban because he had the Dark Mark.”“I don't know either, PJ,” Sirius told him with a sigh. Once more opening his eyes, he looked at his godson then said, “The only one that probably knows is Albus. He sure as hell isn't going to tell us either unless something happens to where he has to. I don't fancy that happening unless you can get some of this out there. It might jar it loose.”“Even if it does, I honestly don't see the purpose in knowing the why behind it,” Remus tossed out there, looking between the two. “It'll just cause plenty of damage and dissension in the ranks.”“There isn't a way for me to get this out there without using Mum's letters and dragging T into the mess,” PJ told both of them. “Neither are things I want to do unless there is a real big reason for it. T is in enough danger as it is. Mum's letters—while I doubt she would mind, I would. Some of what's in there, though it wouldn't go in the papers, is personal. To put the story out there, I would need to have them for the fact checkers and those that go through the research to make sure everything is right. It's not something I'm willing to do. I have very little that was personal from Mum or Dad and don't want to share some of it with the world.”“It's a stance I think both of us can understand,” Remus told him softly with smile. “So would most others.”“True,” Sirius admitted. “I'm curious about this as well now.”He then added. “Look, all of us who were around for the last war have wondered about Snape. We get what Albus has said, of course, but it's there. Even from Minerva. She knows what he was, and is now, like. Even she's admitted, privately, to wondering if he's on the right side. However, I do think he is. What I don't think is he did it willingly. We all know what Albus is like. He'll get what he wants, by hook or by crook. The latter one probably came into play. I'm sure he had something he used to force Snape into the position he's in. We do know he was hired as the Potions teacher right after the war, even though he was under heavy suspicion. It was at Albus' behest. With Albus—he tries to help, he really does, but he also wants those he doesn't trust completely close so he can keep an eye on them. I'm sure the latter came heavily into play with Snape and teaching.”“Not sure what he's like now, but he was foul when I went there,” PJ told the two, looking between them. “Even after I left, being exposed to plenty of good teachers and seeing how other schools ran classes, it made me wonder. Bruxaria was different in plenty of ways, but the Headmistress would never have allowed a teacher to act that way, let alone bully or tank grades the way Snape did. They would have been out on their arse after she hexed most of it off. From talking to others, they said it was the same way where they went. While there are teachers with attitudes and can be nasty, none of them come close to how Snape is. Made me wonder for years what was going on with it. I mean, one of the bits I knew was Dumbledore stepped in to make sure I received a fair grade in Potions because Snape tanked them.”“We do know Albus had done that with others as well,” Remus admitted softly, shaking his head. “He's come out and told us he makes sure the grades at the end of the year are fair for all those involved when it comes to Potions.”“Either he's making up for something big, which is a maybe because he didn't do squat when it came to what went on with us and Snape in school, or he's letting him get away with murder because he needs him,” Sirius tossed out there, glancing between the two. “It's probably a combination of the two.”“Probably,” Remus agreed with a nod. “Look—it was a long time ago and we didn't notice then as we were so young, but Albus had this way about him when it came to students. He picked and chose the ones that he thought were worth saving. Sirius was one of them. Most would have written him off because of his family, but Albus didn't. He let him get away with plenty. The incident with Severus that awful full moon was one of them. Any other student would have been on suspension. He didn't even get detention. Regulus, on the other hand, didn't garner the same kind of attention. It was as though Albus didn't care about him. Severus was the same way. He goes on about trying to save students from bad choices, but his actions show it's only particular ones. The ones he does help are forever loyal to him.” Then, softly, he added, “I'm one of them. He went above and beyond for me when he didn't do the same for others with the same problem. I think he does it to hand pick those that follow him.”“He's right,” Sirius admitted with a sigh, shaking his head. “Look, there were plenty of rotten arses in school with us, ones that became high ranking Death Eaters, but Albus didn't try with most. Hell, he didn't make overtures to try to get them to change. He did with some of the rest of us, though. And we received plenty of personal attention. Others were just ignored, like they weren't worth his time.”“He sure did that with me,” PJ snorted, shaking his head. “Same with Ron and Hermione. We got away with stuff most wouldn't have. Others he didn't bother with.”“It's not changed,” Sirius told him honestly. “Ron was made a Prefect eventually. None of us could understand why. He sure wasn't the kind to fit the job. We all thought, though we didn't say it around the other Weasleys, it was to garner loyalty. Ron is—he has issues with jealousy and being a bigot. While he can change and eventually does the right thing when slapped with it, he's not the kind to garner some of what Albus did for him. Part of it probably was his family and he knew he would need them.”“I heard he was made one and it made no sense to me,” PJ admitted with a snort and shake of his head. “Look, he was as big on breaking rules and ignoring them as I was. Hermione I could understand in that position, just not Ron.”“It's the same with others he's done this with,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. The werewolf then changed tracks again and asked, “Are you going to keep looking into this or let it drop?” He was curious there as he now wanted to know himself. It might not mean anything in the long run, but knowledge was always useful.“I'm going to keep digging,” PJ admitted. Then, shrugging, he said, “It's mostly for me. I want to know and understand. You need to remember that I just don't know much about Mum and Dad. All I've learned over the years came from bits while at Hogwarts, and that wasn't much because no one seemed to think it was worth anything to tell me about them. Then from T, though, again, it wasn't much because we couldn't just get together and talk for so long. Finally, from research. I think this is my way of getting to know them and understand what happened all those years ago.”“Completely understandable,” Sirius nodded, smiling. “We'll help all we can with it.”“I don't think any of us realized you just didn't know when we encountered you at school,” Remus told him softly, looking sad. “I assumed you knew some. My thought is Minerva did as well. Albus—well, he didn't bother for his own reasons.”“Someone should have,” Sirius said with a groan. “I would have if you had been around. You weren't and we had to watch what we said in letters.”“That I understand,” PJ told him. “I wanted to ask, I admit to it, but didn't think it wise in case someone managed to find one of the letters. T's helped all she could over the years, she just didn't know because of what her relationship with Mum was like. So, I'm doing it this way. Besides, it helps with what else I'm working on. Let's face it, it's led me down some paths that have helped plenty.”“It has and we want you to continue,” Remus told him pointedly. “And we'll continue to help all we can.”“We will,” Sirius agreed.Since it appeared there wasn't any more to go over on that topic, Sirius began to fill PJ in on some of what they had found out. It wasn't much and he stayed away from the area of Order business other than where it pertained to him, but he knew he could use it for plenty. He wanted this out of the way because he planned to get all of them out of the house for a while. Though they had to remain cautious because of what was going on, he wasn’t going to allow the war to force him to stay in this house. He wouldn't do that with PJ either. While they might go more to Muggle areas, out was something they would do, he didn't care.
