Chapter 22
For once since this whole nightmare started and he was going to the shop with the twins Severus wasn't bored or trying to find something to occupy his time. Today he had a couple bits on his plate which were keeping him busy and they weren't the sort to make him mental. While they involved research, it was the kind which didn't bother him.
First, he was still trying to find the right privacy spell. It was something he was actually having a good deal of success with. By this time he had found several, so it was down to figuring out which was the best one to use. Once he found the right one, he would then approach the demented duo about applying it. He would then go from there with what he wanted to know, providing he could coax them into letting him apply the spell. With what he knew, he could manage. He would just have to worry what they might want from him in return, information wise. With all he knew, he was wary about what they would ask. It was the part he would deal with when it came up then go from there. As it was a judgment call, he would have to wait until it happened to make that decision. The next part of the research was something Lucius approached him about that morning before he left; something to help ease the symptoms Lupin was dealing with. While his feelings about werewolves were well known and he didn't like dealing with the topic, he agreed to take on seeing if he could find something to aid the situation. He wasn't sure if he could find anything, but he would try. So far he had found a couple potions which wouldn't counteract the Wolfsbane and could help. They weren't complex either. He thought he could brew them up easily or find them at the apothecary they were picking Potter's potions up at. His thought was they would stop after the two red headed menaces were done for the day. If they couldn't procure them, he could easily brew them up with a minimal problem and it would only take an hour at the most. While he wasn't sure about Lucius' impetus for wanting this done, he found reading on the topic fascinating.Though he knew there wasn't much research put into lycanthropy because of the stigma of it, he didn't realize how little was done until he started reading today. Even he realized this was an area someone needed to work in because breakthroughs in this research could lead to plenty of help for other areas when it came to diseases. After all, lycanthropy was similar. It was a needed area, but it didn't appear the funds were there to take it on or people willing to tackle the subject. Already his analytical mind was honing in on some areas he saw he could tackle because he was certain he could improve what was there. However, he wasn't sure if he wanted to take it on because of what had happened in the past. The other side of coin was they would all be in the house with Lupin for the foreseeable future, so it might be best if he did try at least. Anything to help, especially with the danger Lucius was in when it came to accidental infection. After all, one couldn't protect against every instance. Until they all had a tether they could deal with which would allow Lupin to stay away from Lucius, something better than the Muggle protections they were going to use was needed. As he was really the only one in the house who could take on such matters and knew what he was doing, it would fall to him, so he could understand why Lucius asked. As he flipped through the pages of the book he was reading, his brow furrowed as he read snippets. Yes, he would do this. It would just take dividing his time between this and the other project. Both were rather pressing, so he needed to tend to both of them. After a glance up when the twins walked by the door, Severus, finally summoned parchment and quills to take notes. He would work on this for an hour then go back to the privacy spells, rotating through both for an hour each until it was time to go home. While it wasn't the same as what he did on his own when it came to research, he thought he would like tackling the topics.
“Well, this still looks like a mountain of paperwork,” Bill chuckled, shaking his head as he looked at the stacks of it across the table. This was all paperwork needed to pull Harry out of school. Thankfully, they finished the other bits the day before and they were off to the solicitor for him to tend to.
“It is,” Lucius agreed with a nod and smirk. “They don't make it easy on you. Never fear, I'll help all I can. As I'm filling most of it out for Draco, I can easily help you do the same. Shouldn't take long, I don't think. Most is just daunting to look at, nothing more. It requires reading and signing with some tidbits of general information involved.”“Yeah, we'll need help here,” Sirius admitted, scratching his head as he looked over the nightmare amount of papers they were expected to fill out. After sliding over by Bill, who was reading through the cover letter, brow furrowed, Lucius snorted then said, “We'll work together and stay on the same pages so you can follow along what I do. It should go faster if we do it that way.”“It better or we're apt to end up highly frustrated then set it on fire,” Sirius grinned, nudging the chuckling Harry.“I'll let you tackle it,” Remus told them, looking amused. “Narcissa and I will take on other areas,” he added looking down the table where she sat, smiling a tad. Thankfully the bond was loosening up slightly and she could get closer without being shoved away or having the feelings she was before. They thought it meant the bond was doing what it needed to. Either way, it was better as she could get with them personally about many areas rather than have to go through the other three, though they needed to stay wary of keeping her a certain distance away.As they went to work, Narcissa pulled out a clean sheet of parchment and picked up her quill. As they tended to this, she wanted to cover a few bits. “I thought we should do a bit of a checklist of what you need to tend to in preparation for leaving. The biggest is the paperwork you sent off and dealing with the monetary end. It's also the hardest, thankfully. We'll cover the rest to make sure you have it at least started.”“Good idea,” Sirius nodded as he paid attention to what Lucius was showing him. “What else do we need, do you know?”“Most of it is just the paperwork end. You'll also need inoculations,” Narcissa told him. “Harry's Healer can easily immunize you as he'll know the standard. It's best to get them as fast as you can so we don't forget and won't have to rush around at the last minute.”“Not something I thought of,” Bill told her honestly. “Mine was taken care of through Gringotts when I went to Egypt the first time. I'll need my records as I might be up to date on most we need.”“Oh yes,” Narcissa nodded, making note of what was said. “All of you need your medical records, honestly. There might not be anything in them, but it's best to have them.”“I'm going to add you might want to see about an injunction, restraining order, something against Albus,” Remus added quietly, sipping his tea as he watched them work. “And make sure it's done as quietly as you can manage so he doesn’t know until you get out. I'm not sure how you go about obtaining one, so it might take time and fancy footwork so he doesn't know.”“Already brought it up to my Solicitor,” Sirius assured his old friend, looking up. “He said it's going to take time to not only figure out how to go about it, but find a reason to obtain one. It's not a clear-cut bit like so much, just our suspicions. We need some kind of proof.”“I didn't think of that,” Lucius admitted, brow furrowed. “We don't have much beyond a feeling.”“The whole problem with this mess,” Sirius grumbled, signing the paper Bill passed over to him. “He can't do anything on just a feeling.”“Which tells me we need whatever Severus knows,” Lucius said, looking around. “I'm certain whatever he knows can give you the proof you need.”“And a copy of the Prophecy,” Remus added, shaking his head. “This has to relate somehow. Without knowing what it says, we can't piece anything together.”“I mentioned that,” Sirius nodded, looking over at what Bill was filling out with Harry's help. “He said he'll try to get his hands on it, or a copy anyway. As it's not something he's dealt with before, he's not sure how to go about it. As Harry is in my custody and it relates, with his name supposedly on the jar, he says there has to be some way to get at least a copy of what it says, but he doesn't know how.”“An area I can't help with either as I don't know myself,” Lucius admitted, looking slightly sour. “I've dealt with plenty in the government, but never anything to do with the prophecies. If there's a way, he'll find it.”While she made notes on what she thought they needed, Narcissa listened in to what was said. When there was a lull she added, softly, “We need as much information on this whole mess as we can get before you make your exit. I do understand the exit will come when something happens, but for everyone's sake, we need to find out what we can.”“And we're trying,” Bill sighed, glancing up at her. “We're just not getting anywhere. No one can find anything to help either. We'll press on, but until something happens to give us bigger clues, we're just dealing with what we have.”“Very true,” Narcissa admitted. “We—maybe we can send part of the research to Albus. I know we don't want him involved more than we have to, but if we go through and pull the personal parts out then send it to him, maybe he can find something we can't.”After pondering what she said for a few moments, Remus gave a reluctant nod. “I think we do. Before we take that step, though, I think we need everyone's permission. After all, we're dealing with their lives and personal areas.”“I'll talk with everyone tonight then go through and redact what he doesn't need to know. Before we send it off, I'll have all of you here look it over. We need something to help. All we have are a multitude of clues which aren't panning out. Maybe some fresh eyes can see something we can't.”“Go ahead and we'll deal from there,” Remus told her.He then looked around and asked, “Anything we really need to cover or worry about beyond this mass?”“No, we're good until the next Healer's appointment.” Bill told him. “And deal with whatever crops up from here. There's bound to end up something as volatile as some of the bonds are.”“Too true,” Lucius groaned, shaking his head. Then he began asking about any new reactions the three might have noticed while they slugged through the mess. He didn't think there was, but wanted to make sure.
After tea, Draco was seated at the table in the room he shared with Charlie going through all the packages which had arrived for him while he was on the reserve. He was rather excited by this as it was the gear they ordered for him. Not only was it very nice and he liked it, like with the boots and some of the outer gear, but he just generally liked the look of it.
Unlike what he would have thought, though he was excited to see the dragons up close, he adored going to work with Charlie. The dragons were fascinating and he liked watching them. It was more, though. It was a job, he understood, but watching those on the reserve work with the beasts was not only fascinating, but he found himself wanting to join them. Oh, he didn't as he didn't know what he was doing and dealing with the creatures was dangerous. Though the people on the reserve knew what they were doing, he had seen a few injured by the dragons. While it wasn't serious, like burns or cut up, it was enough to tell him he needed to stay back like they told him and do as instructed. Despite the danger, he loved it.There was a pull there, something he didn't completely understand, but he wanted to learn more about the beasts and help. Up until this point, he had something more grandiose in mind for a career; a Healer. It was what he thought he wanted to do, despite how odd some would think the choice was for him. Now, though, he was rethinking the career choice. He wanted to work with the dragons, but wasn't sure how. From what he'd seen so far, there were plenty of different jobs. All of them were fascinating, though. After sorting through the gear and setting it aside for the elves to clean before he wore what was there, he then cleared his throat and said, “I have a question.” Charlie was just relaxing while working on some of his own gear and doing repairs on it, so he wasn't stressed. It had been a rather easy day, honestly. He thought this was the time to ask some questions. “It's about the dragons.”“What do you want to know?” Charlie asked, looking up from his repair work. From what he could tell, when Draco asked about the dragons, he wasn't going to end up demanding his way and the questions were reasonable, so he would answer them without a problem.“What does it take to work with them? I mean along the lines of classes at school to qualify. I assume most of the training comes when you are hired,” Draco asked, highly curious.“Care, of course, Charms because of the spells we use, Potions to have the basics of brewing some of what's needed and some Transfiguration.” Charlie told him honestly. Then he asked, curious, “Why? Is it just being curious or is there a reason?”“Curious mostly, but wondering about working with them,” Draco told him honestly, leaning back in his chair. “I understand we'll eventually have a tether which will allow us to do whatever, but I like going with you and working with the dragons.”“They're fascinating,” Draco admitted. “I like watching and think I would like working with them.”“From what I understand you were geared towards being a Healer?” Charlie asked stopping what he was doing. When Draco nodded, he told him, “You can do both, you know.”“How?” Draco asked, not sure what Charlie meant. If there was a way, he would take it.“Reserves always need animal Healers,” Charlie told him, crossing his legs, going back to what he was doing. “Most Healers who work with dragons come into it in another way or the reserve pays to send someone to training. If you like the dragons and want to become a Healer, it's a way to do both.”Not having thought of that route, Draco was excited. With a nod, he said, “I like the idea. This is what I want to do.” Then his brow furrowed and he asked, “How do you get into training? I know the route for standard Healers, but not sure how with this as it wasn't covered in school during career counseling.”“Not sure either, honestly,” Charlie chuckled. “Well, beyond what I told you. We can ask tomorrow then go from there if this is what you want. Once you make a choice, we'll work towards that goal.”“I want this,” Draco told him with a firm nod, already adoring the idea. Yes, he wanted this and would manage. He would love it, too!“We'll see what we can do,” Charlie told him with a smile and nod. “We have to work on what in Merlin's name we're going to do about teaching you anyway. It's not as easy as going to school, especially with the tether. With the term coming, we have to figure out how we're going to manage this.”“I didn't think about that end,” Draco admitted, brow furrowed. From what he could see, it was something they needed to work on. “It'll be complicated, especially if I have to take Care. We can't do those classes here.”“Another problem along with plenty of others. There is the problem with Harry as well, so it's complicated.”“True,” Draco sighed, shaking his head. He supposed they needed to sit down this weekend and suss out plenty.Rather than dwell on what he had no answers for, he began asking Charlie about what animal Healers did and how they worked with the dragons. He wanted to make sure he liked this idea before he committed to it.As Draco did seem serious about this, Charlie answered all his questions honestly, smiling a tad. After all, he adored his dragons and loved to talk about them.
After putting aside what he had been working on, Lucius stood with a groan then stretched. While it wasn't late, he was tired. Slugging through paperwork, especially the mass they had to work with was exhausting. When he finished, he gave a tired sigh then slumped slightly. Though early, he was going to call it a night.
Before heading to the en suite to get ready, he glanced at the bed then gave a soft sigh. Remus was already sleeping and had been for over an hour. It bothered him on many levels what he was dealing with. He supposed the bond was part of the reason behind why it troubled him, but one reason was a tad selfish. It wasn't until Remus started sleeping more that he realized how much he missed the man's quiet company. Remus was a calm but intelligent company he was learning he liked, a lot. While he did have a good sense of humor, something which shone through at times, it was his presence and having someone to talk to who was reasonable that he missed. As he looked at the bed, he shook his head. When they managed to sort out so much of what was going on and figured part of it out, he would see what he could manage to help him during this trying time of the month. Severus told him tonight he was already working on the situation and came up with a couple potions they would pick up the following day. Hopefully they would give him some relief in some ways. With a shake of his head, he glanced at the bed once more then headed to the en suite to tend to what he needed then he would lie down. He looked forward to curling up like he had been with Remus. Yes, that was bond related, he knew it was, but it didn't lessen the pleasure of it. And he would indulge and take it as something pleasurable from the mess. And he wouldn't let it bother him. After lifting his chin and smiling a tad, he went to tend to his needs then he would relax in bed, curled up with Remus and read for a time. Yes, he would adore it, probably more than he had with anyone else, including Narcissa. And he wouldn't allow himself to over analyze it either. No, it would just lessen the pleasure, something he wouldn't allow himself to do.
As everyone else in the house was relaxing and trying to unwind before bed, Sirius, Bill and Harry were in the massive tub the elves put in their loo having a good time. They had conjured a net across the middle and were batting a ball back and forth in a game similar to Muggle volleyball. It was Bill and Harry against Sirius and all three where having a great deal of fun with it, laughing and joking around.
After swatting the ball back, watching the two dive for it, Sirius laughed. He hadn't had this much fun in a very long time and adored it. While in school, Remus used to sneak all of them into the Prefect's loo and they would do something similar, mucking about and having fun. Sure, this reminded him of those fun times, but it was different because of the bond with Harry and Bill. Well, it was more than the bond, honestly, because he liked having fun with them. It was just a different kind than in the past. Not only did the two like to muck around with whatever, they were a riot to do it with. The three of them had all kinds of fun. When Harry dove for the next shot, dunking himself and coming up sputtering, though grinning as he did, Sirius laughed, feeling wonderful. It had been a long time since he laughed like he had with the two and it felt amazing to do so once more. Yeah, the bond wasn’t what any of them wanted, but he loved it. More with each passing day as well. And he was going to bet it would get better as time went on. That was fine with him. It was great to have some people in his life he could just cut loose with and enjoy himself. He hadn't been with anyone in a long term relationship, other than friends, so it was new to him, but he adored it. And would continue to do so.As the game started to wind down after a time and they were going to relax, they sat and talked about what else to do for the rest of the night. While they discussed their options, Sirius slipped an arm around Harry and held him close. While Harry wasn't someone he would have thought of when it came to this kind of relationship, he was going with it and adoring what came along with the whole package.Life was now good, despite the spanners and how strange it was. And, for Sirius, it was all that mattered to him.
