Chapter 22
Albus let out a tired sigh, ruffling the whiskers around his mouth, then leaned back in his chair before tossing his quill on the desk. Though his desk was cluttered and seemingly filled to overflowing with papers, he had finished a largest part of his work; the part dealing with school. The rest would be Order business and other tidbits dealing with the war. After a glance at the desk, he waved his wand and everything flew into different piles. At least it was now organized so he could find what he wanted easier.
As he gazed over what covered his desk, he gave a pleased nod. While there was plenty there for him to plough through, it wouldn’t take him much time, thankfully. He already had a book he kept the tips, hints, and plenty else in, so it would go in there, organized, for him to find when he needed it. It was most helpful because of how much information he now had.
As he pondered plenty, his mind mostly circled the issue of Sirius, Harry, and Tom. It would end up a huge problematic area they had to deal with, so it would be only natural for him to home in on it. Long thin fingers tapping on one arm of the chair, he thought over plenty.
Just as he started to rock in his chair, humming to himself softly, an idea hit him. Not moving other than to turn his chair around, he said Phineas’ name.
Since the painting never had much to do, he perked right up and asked, “What do you need, Albus?”
“Have you seen anything odd at Grimmauld Place since this whole mess started or heard anything?” Albus inquired, though he knew the answer would be no.
“Just Kreacher doing his version of cleaning and the normal muttering,” Phineas sighed, shaking his head.
“I want you to keep a closer eye on the house, if you can,” Albus instructed. “Even slide into other paintings if you have to. Any hint of anyone in the house or Kreacher doing something odd, let me know.”
“Will do,” Phineas assured him, perking up more, happy to have something to do. “I’ll start showing up several times a day and see what I can do to slide into other paintings to check around the house. You have my word if something is off, I’ll relay it immediately.”
“Just stay cautious so no one we don’t want seeing you does,” Albus warned, knowing Phineas would understand who he was talking about.
“Rest assured, I’ll make sure,” Phineas assured him, sobering up. It certainly wouldn’t do for the Dark Lord to see him.
“Anything at all odd you see,” Albus reiterated. Once he heard the reply, he gave a soft sigh then turned back around, planning to knock out the paperwork as fast as he could manage.
While lying on his stomach under the heat producing lights, eyes shut, around the newly cleaned and filled pool, Harry felt as content as he could get in the circumstances. No, it wasn’t the greatest because they were still bonded to Tom, but this felt good. Nagini was stretched out across his warm back, hissing contentedly, seeming to like basking in the heat here as it wasn’t too hot for her. It certainly beat outside as the weather turned rainy with a decidedly cold wind driving it.
One eye cracking open, he glanced at where Sirius sprawled out beside him on a chair and noted he was asleep once more. With a bare nod, he shut his eye and gave another contented sigh. They had mucked about in the pool for a time, but it became obvious Sirius hadn’t slept well and ended up a tad cranky because of it. From what his godfather said, the mood came from a dream he had. Since Harry had a few of those over the years and dealt with being cranky or mad afterwards, he understood it and said nothing when Sirius wanted to stop to take a nap.
He homed in on Nagini’s contented hissing and seemed to relax more. Honestly, he didn’t know why her hissing soothed him, but it did. Since it did and wasn’t anything ‘off’ or dangerous, he would go with it. As he lay there, he told her in a lazy voice, “Your hissing is right relaxing.”
“Tom says the same thing,” Nagini said, shifting around on his warm back to find another spot where the skin felt heated from the lights. “This is ever so nice. Not too hot and feels like daylight,” she observed with a contented hiss.
“It does,” Harry agreed without moving, feeling nice and relaxed.
The snake glanced over at Sirius, pleased to see him still sleeping, then decided to talk with Harry a tad since they were alone. Though not sure how far she would get with him, she hoped to at least start moving that direction.
“You seem like you’re doing better,” she started, hoping Harry would give her what she needed to build on.
“I feel better. Not a ton, but enough I think,” Harry admitted, not moving, enjoying the heat and just relaxing.
“That is good,” Nagini answered, pleased. “Now, keep in mind I won’t tell anyone anything we talk about.” When Harry nodded in reply, she pressed on, “What did Draco do to upset you so much? I think, from so much of what I’ve heard, he’s the cause of so many ill feelings from you and Sirius. Now, I remember you saying he changed things. How did he do so?”
With a heavy sigh, Harry tried to decide if he should explain it or not. These sorts of things weren’t something he normally talked about to anyone, Sirius included. However, he remembered the night he told Sirius and remembered she was there as well, so he decided to explain. As simply as he could, he walked her through what it meant then explained the parts she didn’t understand.
After giving an angry huff at what Harry explained, she told him, “Tom should let me eat the little brat! It’s not fair to any of you what he caused.”
“I agree with the what he caused bit, but not the eating,” Harry told her, trying not to chuckle at her blood bloodthirstiness. “Wouldn’t want you to eat him as you may catch something which might cause you to act the same way,” he added, trying to make light of it.
“I never thought of that,” Nagini said, not having pondered it that way. “However, he needs punished for what he did! None of you had a choice and it’s making you so sad.”
“I’ll get over it,” Harry sighed, shaking his head just a tad. “It’s not all the reason behind the sadness, but it’s a big part.”
“Can you tell me what else is causing it?” Nagini inquired. Then she reiterated, “I won’t tell anyone, my word. Not even Tom. What you say stays between us.”
Harry stayed quiet for a minute or so, thinking it over. Again, it came from the realm of things he didn’t talk about. However, he thought he could speak of one segment without a problem. The other two were probably feeling much the same way, so he didn’t see the harm. With a sigh, he then told her, “Part of it comes down to there is no way out of this. Most everything else there is if you look hard enough. This time there isn’t. No matter what we do, we’re stuck together. Not sure I can handle it, honestly. It’s so hard to deal with.”
For once Nagini understood this concept without someone having to explain it to her. With a dejected hissy sigh, she admitted, “No, there isn’t. Even Tom, as smart as he is, can’t find a way out. I think it just comes down to you have to grow accustomed to it.”
“I don’t want to,” Harry replied with a bit of whine in his voice though he tried not to let it out. “It’s just—well, I didn’t have a choice!”
“Another reason I should be allowed to eat Draco,” Nagini huffed, shifting around to give Harry a slight squeeze, the best she could anyway.
Unable to help it, Harry grinned at what she said. “I agree with Tom when he said there are worse things than death. Draco going to Azkaban will end up worse on him than you eating him because it will last a long time and he will suffer the whole time.”
“Something I never pondered,” Nagini admitted in a thoughtful tone. “All I know is the momentary, such as eating.”
“Sometimes there are worse things than death,” Harry said softly. Then, voice hardening, he added, “Though I think someone needs to punish those who let this go on and didn’t stop him a long time ago since he’s done such things since our first year. This ended up just the worst of the lot is all.”
“Oh, I do agree,” Nagini said, resting her head on his shoulder. “He is brat and has been for as long as Tom has mentioned him.”
“I think it goes beyond brat,” Harry snorted. “He’s just an entitled little git who can’t stand when someone rejects him for his prejudices.”
“It’s Lucius’ fault,” Nagini huffed. “Narcissa tries to keep Draco in line and not doing foolish stunts, though she’s overindulged him plenty. Lucius, though, allows him get away with everything as long as it doesn’t put them in a bad light or isn’t done publicly and he’s not caught. From what Tom says he’s doing his best to get Draco off.” Then, sounding smug, she added, “Tom isn’t going to allow that!”
“Good,” Harry sighed with a ghost of a smile on his face. “For once, he needs to pay for what he did. He never has from what I know.”
“I don’t think he has either,” Nagini told him. After a pause to give him another squeeze, she asked, “Are those the only things bothering you, Harry, and causing the sadness?”
“No,” Harry told her softly, thinking about his want to have the threesome again. Before she could ask, he said, “I’m just not ready to talk about the other subject yet. It’s something I don’t even want to think about, so talking is out for a while.”
“Whenever you’re ready, I’ll listen without judgment,” Nagini said in a reassuring tone. “Nothing you say will go beyond the two of us and I won’t judge you for it. It’ll just be a talk between the two of us.”
“Thanks,” Harry told her, the smile growing. Then it slipped off his face and he sighed. “I just can’t talk about it yet. It’s bothering me too much to.”
“If it’s bothering you so much, talking it out might be the solution,” the snake told him sensibly. “However, I do understand you have to come to grips with it before you can. Just know I will talk to you whenever you like. If I’m not around, send an elf to come find me and I’ll find you straight away.”
“I will when I’m ready,” Harry assured her. Actually, he found her easier to talk to than Sirius about some of this because of her neutrality and not being affected by the bond, being a neutral party to the whole mess.
“Now,” she started, figuring enough of the mess had been covered and Harry needed to relax from it, “I think spending time down here each day is good. Tom needs to as well, from my thinking. He can just sit and relax with the two of you and read whatever. From what I see, he spends far too much time in his study and the relaxation down here would do him good.”
Harry couldn’t help but grin at what she said, though he didn’t agree. He just found it funny the snake mothered over the evil git like she did.
Nagini then began to ask Harry about activities they could do in the pool to relax and have fun. Since she hadn’t ever encountered one which could be used, she was curious.
As she sat and listened to her sister, Bella’s eyes were following Lucius, taking in everything he did. Once more he pushed ahead with plans to help Draco wiggle out of what he caused. Since he decided to go about this another way since Fudge had backed off, she needed to pay attention because their Lord wanted all they could give him on the topic. She hadn’t heard nearly enough about this plan for her liking and had very few details, something their Lord wouldn’t like, so it behooved her to learn more.
While paying attention to all Lucius said, she would nod here and there at her sister to make it seem like she followed the conversation. In all honesty, she didn’t have a clue what Narcissa said. Soon enough Narcissa would either end up distracted by something or would move on to something else none the wiser Bella wasn’t paying attention.
Unable to help herself, Bella’s eyes narrowed when Draco chimed in after his father asked him some questions. Like normal, her nephew blamed the whole thing on Potter, making up stories of harassment and other behaviors which supposedly prodded him to take this step. While she loved her nephew, Draco—he and Lucius were identical in so much. She remembered Lucius back in school and he acted just like Draco. Doing so set her teeth on edge. She didn’t like it then and sure didn’t now from the second generation of Malfoys.
She nodded to her sister when she excused herself to go tend to something or other then paid closer attention to what Lucius said. Brow drawn down as Lucius began talking bribes and who the money should go to, she didn’t like any of it and made a mental note to meet with their Lord the following day to fill him in. If money would be tossed about, he needed to know to put a stop to it.
The more she listened to Lucius and his plans, the angrier she grew. Part of her wanted to just go ahead and hex him into oblivion then be done with it, but she stayed her wand. No, this area ended up best dealt with by their Lord. He always knew the best way to handle such matters then get everything moving the way he wanted. This time would end up no different.
Just when she thought she would lose her mind from listening to the blather, Lucius was called away by Narcissa to tend to some sort of business matter. Assuming it would take plenty of time like normal, she took the opportunity to go take a nap after sending off an owl to their Lord to let him know she needed to speak to him. It would be best that they do this sooner than later, something she would make clear to him. Once she received his reply, she would go from there. As her husband would now keep watch and listen to whatever Lucius had to say, she wouldn’t miss anything if Lucius began to blather again. She just couldn’t take any more and needed a break for now. Later on she would once more resume the watch on the prat.
Tom picked up a report from one of his spies inside the Ministry and frowned as he read it. Letting his chair drop back, he propped his feet up on the desk and read it once more, making sure to pick up on what might be left unsaid. Most of it dealt with various areas of the Ministry and what Fudge had them doing on so many topics. Those he liked to keep abreast of. However, what drew his attention dealt with the area of Fudge and some legislation he wanted pushed through.
It seemed that Fudge, despite his well placed maneuvers, decided to go against what he wanted. Even with him sending in some of his people, Fudge ignored it all and seemed like he leaned towards a small minority of people who tossed money in his coffers, off the book and on. No, this wouldn’t do at all. He needed those pieces of legislation through to work with some other areas. He couldn’t allow Fudge to toss a spanner into his plans.
With a disgusted snort, he tossed the missive back on his desk without moving much then laced his fingers behind his head. Mind working on the topic, he continued to stare at the parchment. This—he couldn’t allow this to go on. Elections were coming soon, so it appeared Fudge already started playing towards those with money. While he had the hand on the back of some of his biggest donors, he didn’t have influence with all of them. The ones the stupid man played to could throw spanners into plenty because of what they wanted for their business dealings. He couldn’t allow that to happen.
Fingers starting to drum on the back of his skull where they were laced, he thought over the situation. Really, it all came down to Fudge had to go. While he liked having the man in office because he found him easy to manipulate, his usefulness was coming to an end. Since he no longer had Lucius to send in to spin Fudge the way he wanted him to go, it would end up too bothersome to cultivate that sort of relationship now. Honestly? It wasn’t worth it either. There were others he could put in place which would do a far better job than Fudge and throw anyone off what might be going on. As he knew well, Albus kept a close eye on what the Ministry did to keep track of what he might be up to. That needed to stop.
Yes, he decided, the time had come for Fudge to go. Now he had to figure out who to put in his place. Oh, he certainly had several lined up who would do magnificently in that position, but he had to decide which one would work the best. Well, and draw the least amount of suspicion from that bearded nightmare. He wanted someone in place who would throw Albus as far off as he could manage. He had to make this look good, so he needed to choose carefully.
With a groan, he pulled his feet off the desk and put them on the floor then pulled a file out from his bottom drawer. It contained a complete dossier of all those he had in his pocket who were capable of taking on the job. The time had finally come where he had to make a choice and it needed to end up the right one so they could win. Once he picked, it would be just the start. He had to stack the deck enough that it would end up ensured they would win. It wouldn’t do to go through all this trouble just to have them lose.
Mind now working on the topic as he leafed through the parchments, he started plotting and began forming the first plans for how he would go about this. As delicate of a dance as it would end up, he had to do it carefully.
By bedtime, Sirius felt better. The last vestiges of that dream had shaken themselves off after his nap by the pool, so he started being more up to snuff. For the most part, he and Harry just spent the rest of the time mucking about. Even better was Tom had only made an appearance at the pool for a brief time, then at supper before vanishing to do what it is he did.
While part of him, the Order member part, felt he should try to find out what the git was up to, another part, probably ruled by the bond, balked at the mere thought. Since he didn’t want to invoke anything from the bond, as snooping would probably fall in the realm of harm as he would try to pass along what he would find, he thought it a bad idea all around. If it came down to something going on that he would need to pass along, he would deal with it then. For now, he would leave it be.
After flopping on the bed by Harry with a groan, he reached over and ruffled his godson’s hair. “We should sleep good tonight after the swimming and flying today.”
“We should,” Harry agreed, curling up to Sirius and trying to keep those traitorous thoughts of sex at bay as he did. “Nice to feel tired after a day of doing fun stuff.”
“As we don’t have much to do, we can have all the fun we want,” Sirius grinned down at him, feeling nicely relaxed and calm after a day of being out of sorts and grumpy from the dream he had. No, he needed no more of those. While Harry prodded him a couple of times to talk about it, he didn’t. Telling Harry about having his mother and father have at him over the relationship and the sex in that place wasn’t something he thought his godson needed to hear. Hell, it probably wouldn’t help Harry in the least either. Those sorts of bits were best kept to himself.
“Rather like having all the time in the world to do whatever and just relax. Things have been plenty stressful over the years since I started school. Especially the last couple,” Harry told him, curling up to Sirius.
“Oh yes,” Sirius admitted with a heavy sigh in his voice, arm slipping around Harry, holding him close. “While we need to do something with your schooling, for now I’m of the opinion to leave it for a time. We have plenty on our plates to deal with that we don’t need it tossed in there right now. We’ll wait on it. Some of it I can cover while we muck around. Others need more intensive work. However, I did think we might work on some dueling for fun. I can not only teach you plenty of spells you need to know, but a lot of prank ones you’ll love. Like the spell which makes your opponent’s wand shoot out ducks no matter what spell they cast,” he grinned as he finished.
“Oh, that has to be a riot to see!” Harry laughed, trying to envision it.
“It is and throws people completely off. Me and your father perfected it before leaving school and put it to good use after that,” Sirius grinned down at him.
“You have to teach me that one,” Harry said, poking him in the side.
“I will, don’t worry,” Sirius chuckled, enjoying the closeness. He then went on to talk about a few others until they were both starting to fall asleep.
With a start, Sirius ended up pulled awake then sat up in bed, grabbing his wand. Eyes squinted, he tried to see in the darkened room. The only light left was the faint glow in the burning embers of the fire. Looking around, he then relaxed as he realized the elf stoking the fireplace, though quiet about it as they all were, had pulled him awake.
After flopping back down, he curled up to Harry and held him tight. He supposed he was just on edge since he had another of his horrific nightmares about Azkaban. Those always ended up bad and caused problems. Being pulled awake seemed to help, honestly. Holding Harry and curling up to him did more. He wasn’t going to complain about the latter either. It was better than anything else he tried and would go with it.
Once more snuggling up to Harry, burying his face in his godson’s hair, he let out a contented sigh and soon drifted back off to sleep.
