Chapter Twenty-TwoOne Day at a Time
“What did that to you?”“Bander who…the bander…”
“The Bandersnatch?”
Draco was sitting comfortably on the end of the couch with his feet propped up on a small stool. His attention wasn’t on the movie, images or dialogue, but on his lover. Harry was stretched out across the couch with his head resting comfortably on Draco’s lap. Harry’s bandaged back wasn’t touching the couch back, mostly out of comfort. There was a long pillow resting between the two to give him more comfort. Draco had a hand woven into Harry’s hair; occasionally gently pulling apart a tangle. It was Harry’s second day out of the hospital. It saddened the lovers that Harry had to recover from massive spell damage so close to the holidays. However, that sadness quickly morphed into relief that they weren’t planning a funeral. Right now, the two lovers were tag-teaming with Harry while working; Draco stayed with him during the day, Severus during the night.During the day, Severus was brewing for his suppliers and ensuring that Harry’s daily potions were well stocked. The poor brunette had to take pain-relieving potions and healing potions every three hours. Draco helped make sure Harry stayed on those until he left for the graveyard shift of work. After that, Severus helped Harry relax, checked Harry’s back over, and made sure he rested. The Healer was scheduled to visit tomorrow so Draco called in to not work tonight so they could both be well rested and there for Harry tomorrow.Draco’s thoughts were interrupted when he sensed someone enter the wards. He sensed them walking hurriedly up the path to the house. He knew it must be someone who had permission to come through the wards; someone who did not wish them ill will.“Harry? Lift your head, love,” Draco whispered.Harry lifted his head up and allowed Draco to stand up. The blonde slid a pillow under Harry’s head. A poor substitute in his opinion, but it would work for a temporary.“I’ll be right back.”“’kay, Dray.”Draco left the movie running for Harry as he went to the door. He wasn’t surprised to find a familiar face, but he was a little surprised by just who it was.“Ilene? This is a surprise. What’s wrong?” Draco asked. He had picked up on the panic in her gaze. That and how quickly she had come from the edge of the wards.“I’m sorry to disturb you, Draco. But I heard…Connor heard about Harry. That he was dying. Is it true?” Ilene asked.Throwing his hand up to touch hers, Draco was quick to reassure her.“It was, but he’s on the mend right now. He’s getting better,” Draco answered honestly.Ilene smiled before looking down behind her.“See, Connor? Harry’s okay, sweetie.”Draco glanced down. He hadn’t even been aware the child was present. Sure enough, he saw a small head peek around from behind his mother. For as long as he had known Connor, he had never known the child to be so timid. Draco lifted his gaze to the mother, flashing her a soft smile.“Why don’t you two come in?”Draco stepped aside and Ilene stepped inside with Connor securely attached to her back. Draco held up a hand for them to wait before he went into the living room. Ilene looked around the wall through the doorway to watch Draco lean over the back of the couch. It looked like he was talking to someone. Harry, perhaps? She watched him straighten up and return to their side. He knelt down to Connor’s level as he peeked his head around his mother’s leg.“There’s someone that would like to see you.”Ilene felt her son release his hold on her leg as he slowly stepped away. Draco pointed him in the direction he had just come from. On the other side of the couch, Harry paused the movie as he sensed Connor approaching. He smiled when the little boy came into his line of sight.“Hey, little guy,” Harry said in a quiet voice.Connor stopped beside the couch, near Harry’s stomach. He quietly reached out for Harry’s hand who let him pick it up easily. Kasper had moved so he was now lying under the fireplace, thus giving his human his space. Harry squeezed Connor’s hand.“Are you okay, Mister Harry?” Connor whispered.Harry nodded softly.“I’m getting better. How are you, buddy?” Harry asked.Connor shrugged his little shoulders.“’m okay. I heard a mean lady hurted you,” Connor said.Harry tried not to squirm under the small wizard’s gaze. He was still coming to terms with everything that had happened. Still coming to terms with the fact that his ex-wife, a Weasley, had nearly killed him. His answer was decided when his eyes locked with fear in small orbs.“She did, but the healers have helped me. Draco and Severus, too. Even Kasper over there,” Harry said.He saw a small light enter through the fear when the small child spotted the canine.“A puppy,” he gasped, a small spark of excitement in his voice.Harry chuckled. He called the canine over. Kasper happily jumped to his feet and bounded over to the two wizards. The little boy let go of Harry’s hand in favor of throwing his arms around the dog’s neck.Harry found himself inviting the little boy to watch the movie with him. Connor climbed gently up on the couch to sit with his back barely touching Harry’s stomach as he leaned more against the couch over him. Kasper sat down between Connor’s legs so the little boy could pet him while he watched the movie. Ilene and Draco soon joined them by sitting in armchairs on either side of the couch. It was a quiet afternoon shared by all./……/
The next day, Healer Copperbottom arrived early and talked to the three lovers while doing basic checks on Harry. He checked his heartbeat and performed a scan over his internal organs. When he needed to take a look at the brunette’s back, it had taken quite a bit of convincing for the two former Slytherins to leave the room. Actually, all it had taken was Harry hinting he was getting a little hungry. The two had immediately left the room to fix something for him. The healer and patient had shared a good laugh with a knowing look.
Carefully with a little help from Healer Copperbottom, Harry removed his shirt and sat down a conjured stool. The healer ran his wand gently over his back, casting complex charms to scan. After only a few seconds, he stepped back and walked around Harry to his front with a smile.“Things are looking good, Harry. The potions seem to be strengthening you back up to speed at a good pace. You can start walking longer distances now, but I will insist you use a cane. As an added precaution, I would keep your canine and one of your lovers nearby when you’re out and about,” Healer Copperbottom told him.Kasper was currently sitting in a corner, waiting for a signal from Harry to move. The brunette had softly commanded him there so the healer could do his job. The canine fidgeted, but he stayed put.The mention of the cane made Harry think about Lucius. There was a question that had been burning on his mind. He had been afraid to ask Severus, but especially Draco. He knew the healer would have an answer for him“Would…would the spell have killed him? Draco’s father?” Harry asked.Harry noticed by the look on the healer’s face that he was hesitant to answer him. Harry’s hand shot out to grasp his wrist. Harry stared pleadingly up at him.“Please.”Healer Copperbottom sighed. He set down his wand and sat down on another stool so he was eye level with his patient.“Lord Malfoy has at least twenty to thirty years on you. His immune system isn’t as strong as yours. It’s very likely that had the spell hit its intended target…the spell would have bypassed his spine and shot straight to the internal organs. He would not have survived the trip to Saint Mungo’s.”Harry grew silent. He knew he had saved Lucius’ life. He knew his lovers, Draco especially, had told him he had done a brave thing in protecting the older wizard. He wondered if either of them or even Lucius knew how severe things could have been had Harry not acted as he did.“Do they know? Does Draco’s father know?” Harry asked.Healer Copperbottom shook his head while shrugging his shoulders.“Professor Snape and young Malfoy are not aware as I felt it unwise for them to know, lest you do a foolish thing even worse.” Small chuckle and wink. “As for Lord Malfoy, I believe he may suspect, but I am not certain. You will have to ask him yourself.”Harry continued to question the man on the curse Ginny had cast.“Would a shield have worked, had I used it instead of throwing myself in the way of the spell?” Harry asked. His worst fears were confirmed when Healer Copperbottom shook his head.“No. It would have gone straight through the shield and still hit the target in its path. This is why it’s a dark spell.”/……/
Ginny lifted her head when she heard the door unlock. She wasn’t too surprised at who she saw in the doorway. She knew her mother wouldn’t show, yet she had at least expected her father to make an appearance. A brother was just the same, seeing as she had so many.
“Hi, big brother. Where’s daddy dearest?” she asked in a sickly sweet voice.Charlie glared. He glanced over his shoulder at the Auror standing there. He motioned with his head and the man nodded to him before walking away. He turned back around to his little sister. She was sitting sideways on her bed with a magic dampening anklet firmly attached around her left ankle. Even if she had her wand on her, she would be lucky to be able to cast a Lumos.
“Dad’s at home with Mom. She’s real upset. Of course, with what we were all told, I can’t blame her,” Charlie replied.Ginny snorted and turned her head away.“It figures Malfoy would get to you. That filthy snake tricked me at the hospital. He’s spreading lies about me while I sit here rotting,” Ginny spat angrily.Charlie shook his head. How had Ginny come so far from the innocent little girl whose hair he used to braid?“Kingsley is the one who came to the house. Him and Mad-Eye. Ma called us all home and they told us what happened. Mom’s so upset she can’t even speak right now and Dad’s beside himself,” Charlie told her.Ginny rolled her eyes. She scooted back so her back rested against the wall. She crossed her arms over her chest and crossed one leg neatly over the other.“Oh. And I suppose Bill and Ron went home to their wives and boo-hooed about the whole thing? Merlin only knows what Percy’s doing with Wood,” she sneered.“What happened to you, Gin? You nearly killed Harry,” Charlie said in a low voice.Ginny flew to her feet with a furious look on her face.“THAT WAS NOT MY FAULT! THE SPELL WASN’T MEANT FOR HARRY!” she screamed.Charlie had promised his father he would keep a level head, but soft words weren’t going to work with Ginny.“That doesn’t matter! You cast a lethal curse that could have – should have – killed him! You could have taken a man’s life!” he shouted back.Ginny let out a loud screech. Charlie was pleasantly surprised she didn’t lunge at him.“The curse was meant for that bastard Malfoy! He and Harry are ruining my life! I was fired from my job, my lawyer has quit on me, and now I’m in a holding cell at the Ministry!”“Confess, then. Go back in court and change your verdict to guilty. That’s the only way you’ll avoid a harsher sentence.”This time, Ginny did launch herself at him. By the time the Aurors rushed in and separated the two, Charlie’s face and arms were badly scratched up. When he stumbled down the corridor out of sight, his brother George spotted him and rushed over.“Eeh, I guess she didn’t like what you had to say,” George commented, drawing his wand to help with his scratches.Charlie held his hand up to stop him.“Don’t. I need to go speak to Malfoy. Gin’s gonna go for an insanity plea,” Charlie explained.George frowned.“She told you that?” he asked.“She didn’t have to.”/……/
“AHHHH!”
“You’re strong, Harry. You will overcome this.”“I…I had to come. I had to know…if my client…I’m so sorry.”“AHHHH!”“It’s not getting better, but it’s not getting worse.”“AHHHH!”“Harry is getting worse. You might want to prepare to say your goodbyes.”Lucius threw his head back, downing his drink in one go. He brought his glass down to his lap where he cradled it with both hands. The memories from the last few days kept playing over and over in his head. He could still see Potter’s eyes fill with immense pain as the spell ripped through his back; the earth-shattering scream he released as he collapsed into Lucius’ arms. Why? That’s the question he kept asking himself. From the first moment he met the boy, he had been the big, scary Death Eater whose offspring bullied him in school. They had created a neutral alliance after Lucius learned the truth behind Narcissa’s death and Harry started dating his son & best friend. Why had he risked his life for him? Was it because he was the father of one of his lovers? What had possessed the boy to shield him with his body and not a spell?Lucius reached a shaky hand out to place his glass back on his deck. He bowed his head with his free hand coming up to hold his temple.“Oh, Cissa. I wish you were here.”End of Chapter Twenty-TwoOne Day at a Time
