“How are you being treated by the other Ravenclaws?”
“They won’t even look at me. I started sleeping the common room.”
“Why?”
“Because I think they were taking turns watching me at night while I was in the dorm. You know to make sure I don’t kill any of them in their sleep.” Scorpius told Albus as they sat together on their favorite staircase.
“I’m sorry Scor.” Albus said. He put his arm around the other boy’s waist and pulled him closer. “Too bad we can’t just swap houses until this is over.”
“How are things in the dungeons?” Scorpius asked as he leaned his head into Albus’s chest.
“It’s more divided than ever. The purists are becoming more vocal.” He answered. “Honestly, it’s not too bad. You get to know what side everyone is on.”
“Purists?” Scorpius asked.
“Yeah,” Albus said with a short laugh, “it’s what we are calling the other Slytherins with pure-blood mania. Not as good as your dad’s use of neo-deatheaters.”
“He always was good at making new words.” Scorpius said with a smile. “I hope he is doing okay. I worry about him and my mom all the time.”
“I think your dad can take care of himself, Scor.” Albus said placing a kiss on the top of his head. “I know your mom will be okay. My dad made sure to give her the best aurors he has.”
“I’m really tired.” Scorpius said with a yawn. “The couches in the common room are not comfortable at all.”
“We could just go to the room of requirement.” Albus offered.
“No, we are hiding remember?” Scorpius said as he pulled himself from Albus and began to walk up the staircase. “It would be too obvious if people saw us going in and out of there together. Besides, there are so many places in this castle that have not been used for years.” Scorpius broke into a faster pace as he ran up the stairs.
Albus followed him. “Scor! We have to be quiet.” He hissed.
“Well then stop talking and follow me.”
Scorpius ran up three flights of stairs, and then paused at the top. Albus came up behind him, breathing deeply to catch his breath. “What are you doing? This is a dead end.” He was right, there were no connecting stairs.
“We just have to wait.” Scorpius said as he pulled back Albus’s sleeve to look at his watch.
“You still don’t have a watch?”
“No, I don’t like the way they feel.” Scorpius answered absentmindedly as he looked around at the staircases switching above them. His eyes paused on one particularly unmoving staircase. “That one.” He told Albus as he pointed to it.
“That one?” Albus looked at Scorpius wondering if he had possibly gone mad. “Scor, I don’t think it moves.”
“That’s the point, Alby.” Scorpius said, as though his plan was extraordinary obvious.
“I’m sorry Scor, but I think I’m missing something.” As Albus spoke, the staircase they were standing on shifted. He held tight to the bannister and Scorpius at the same time. The stopped against a wall, another dead end. Scorpius dropped his school bag on the floor and pulled out a copy of The Daily Prophet. “I don’t think we have time to read the paper right now.”
“Albus. I love you, but please be quiet for a few minutes.” Scorpius said kissing him shortly on the lips. He took out his wand and unfolded the prophet. He gracefully directed the wand in an intricate motion and, whispering a spell, touched it to the edge of the paper. A single sheet, from somewhere in the middle separated its self from the rest. The page began to float a few inches from the floor, and became very stiff. Without pause, Scorpius stood on top of the hovering front page and pointe his wand towards the unmoving staircase above them. Slowly he began to drift upwards.
Albus’s heart skipped a beat as he watched his boyfriend, standing on nothing more than one sheet of The Daily Prophet, make his way to the staircase. He was afraid for the other boy, but also in awe of his skills as a wizard. Once he reached his destination, Scorpius began to drift back down. “What spell is that? It looked like levitation, but you were not pointing your wand at the paper, just at the door.”
“No, it’s not levitation.” Scorpius answered as he landed and took another sheet from the Prophet. “Let me see your wand.” Curiously, Albus handed him the wand. Scorpius repeated the same complex pattern and spell, tapping once more on the edge of The Daily Prophet. Once more, a single sheet pulled itself free and came to levitate in front of Scorpius. “Here,” Scorpius said handing the wand back to Albus, “make sure you keep it pointed straight down until you get on it.”
Albus did as he was told. Stepping on the paper he was surprised to find it incredibly sturdy. “Scor, this is some crazy stuff.” He said smiling. “Why don’t we just use brooms?”
“We could.” Scorpius said raising an eyebrow and looking very much like his father. “Except we would have to explain to anyone that catches us why we are carting broomsticks around.”
“You think of everything.”
“I know.” The other said with the most handsome smug type of smile that he had ever seen. “Your wand is the only one that can control that particular page, so don’t go lending it to James unless you want him breaking his neck.”
“How did you manage that?”
“The wand chose the page it wanted and then I enchanted it.” Scorpius answered simply.
“You made the wand chose a page from the Prophet?” Albus asked dumfounded.
“It’s just simple wand magic.”
“Scor, there is no such thing as simple wand magic.”
Scorpius smiled brightly. “We need to get up there.” He said stepping back onto his page. Albus did the same and they floated up to the suspended staircase.
“Just give it a tap and fold up.” Scorpius told him.
They walked up the final staircase and through an unimportant looking door. The hallway beyond was not very long. There were only about three doors on each side which were closely spaced. “What do you think this place was before that staircase stopped working?”
“I’m pretty sure it was just storage.” Scorpius answered confidently. He walked to the second door on the right and turned the dusty knob. He stepped inside and sent a ball of light from the tip of his wand. “Or I could be wrong.”
“Wow.” Albus said quietly as he looked around the room. It was not large, but not small either. It was however, a very beautiful room. The stonework had been carved around the boarder between the floors and the wall. The celling was a gently sloping dome. In the center of the room was a large circular platform. “What was this?”
“I don’t know.” Scorpius admitted. “But I’m happy that it’s here.”
“What do you think is in the other rooms?”
“Let’s find out.”
They explored the rooms, all of which were smaller than the first, but none less beautiful. They found a small library of dusty books with only a few shelves, a potions room, a bathroom, and a storage room. They paused before entering the last room on the left.
“What are we waiting for?” Albus asked.
“Do you want to make a bet?” He said with a smile. Albus smiled back at him. He instantly recognized that Scorpius had taken a leaf from his father’s book.
“I bet it’s another storage room.”
“I think it’s a bedroom.”
The opened the door and walked in. It became apparent quite quickly that Scorpius had won the bet. Before them stood an stone carved, king size, four poster bed.
“Too bad it’s all covered in dust.” Albus said sounding very disappointed.
“It’s a good thing Albus!” Scorpius said happily.
“How do you figure?”
“It means that on one has slept in here for a very long time, probably more than 1000 years.” He added the last as he looked at a plaque on the wall.
Albus followed his gaze to the crest on the wall. “Huffelpuff?”
“This must have been her room!” Scorpius said excitedly. He looked at Albus whose face seemed to be cemented with confusion. “Helga Huffelpuff. One of the founders!”
“No way Scor!” Albus said doubtingly. “They wouldn’t just forget about this place. Not if it was hers!”
“Yes they would!” Scorpius said laughing. “Albus, after all these months of running around with me, trying to find deserted hallways, you haven’t realized how many places are abandoned in this castle?”
“You have a point.”
“Help me with this dust.”
Within the hour they had returned the room to its former glory. Helga Huffelpuff’s bed was re-plumped, and the pillows softened. The floor was clean and the walls were now void of all cobwebs.“This is the best night I’ve had in a while Scorpius.” He said turning to the other boy. “You are amazing.”
Scorpius closed the space between them in one graceful stride. He put his arms tightly around his boyfriend’s neck. “This night is not over yet Albus.” He whispered into Albus’s ear.
