Chapter 22
Sirius POV
Despite the fact that it was Friday, I was in a bad mood. Today was the day I would be having lunch with my parents, my brother and Lex. Lex and I hadn’t spoken since our disagreement in the hospital wing. I’d wanted to talk to her after the quidditch practice, but she was gone before I made it out of the dressing rooms. I guessed she left because of the many rude and suggestive comments she had received during practice.
James told me to ignore the others, but when Marchand made a comment about Lex’ breasts I couldn’t help myself. So I flew up to him, and punched him in the face. After that they thankfully stopped paying her any attention.
When we climbed the stairs after practice, I noticed two shapes that vaguely looked like humans make their way to the lake. James took out his Marauders’ map when I pointed them out to him. I was stunned when the dots walking towards the lake were labelled ‘Regulus Black’ and ‘Alexandra Zabini’. I wanted to know where they were going, but James pointed out to me that it was already past curfew, and that we were sure to get caught.
Today was one of those rare Hogsmade Fridays, there were no classes today, and everyone in 3rd year or older went to Hogsmade today. I was the only one who had to spend it having lunch with my mother fawning over what she perceived to be a possible candidate for marriage to Regulus.
When I got to the great hall everyone seemed elated. As usual I looked at the Slytherin table first. I saw Regulus sitting next to Snape, they were engrossed in their conversation. I frowned as I noticed that Lex was not sitting with them. I let my gaze travel over to the Ravenclaw table, but she wasn’t there either. When I sat down at the Gryffindor table I saw that she was sitting with Lily at our table, only a few seats from us. I couldn’t help but overhearing their conversation. ‘I don’t know what’s gotten into him, he’s been ignoring me for a week now.’ She told Lily. Lily seemed to think for a long time before speaking again. ‘You say this started after you had a fight in the hospital wing?’ Lex nodded, and my heart leapt. She had a fight with Snape going on? How had I missed that all week?
I started to really pay attention to the conversation. ‘He hasn’t spoken much to me either’ Lily told Lex in a reassuring way. ‘Maybe he’s struggling with something.’ She added. Lex absentmindedly nibbled on her fork, thinking. I knew that expression, but I couldn’t quite place it. ‘We were supposed to attend the Halloween party together tomorrow.’ She told Lily ‘He hasn’t spoken to me for a week, I’m not sure he still wants to go with me.’
I looked away before she could catch me staring at her. James had apparently been listening in as well, because he quietly said ‘trouble in paradise’. I nodded, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that we had been eavesdropping on the girls.
Luck was with us tough, when we were walking towards Hogsmade, we were just behind a group of Slytherins that included Snape. James called out to him when we had left the castle grounds. ‘So Snape, I hear your girlfriend isn’t too happy with you ignoring her for the best part of the week.’
Snape turned towards us, and some of the Slytherins halted as well. ‘What is it to you Potter?’ he asked, his eyes darting to me for a moment. I seized the opportunity to speak up ‘Lex is my friend, if you hurt her in any way, you’ll regret it.’ I told him. He smirked at me, and turned to walk towards Hogsmade again. ‘Hey Snape, since you have no use for her, I’ll take her to the ball tomorrow then right?’ I added. Before I knew it, Snape was right before me, his wand at my throat. ‘I’m taking her, and you will leave her alone.’ He told me threateningly.
At the entrance of the village, I left my friends, to get to the restaurant where my parents and I would be having lunch. It was the most expensive restaurant in the village, we had been there often, and my parents had their own table at the place. I was sure that mother had only done this to impress Lex, just as I was sure that Lex wouldn’t be impressed by it.
I entered to find that my brother and Lex weren’t there yet, so I greeted my parents, and took my seat. I informed them that I had managed to persuade lord Fawley to let me accompany his daughter to the Malfoy engagement ball. My mother was pleased that I managed to find such an appropriate date. She surprised me by not asking me to formally meet her first. I was sure she had heard of Lydia Fawley’s reputation. Despite her strict upbringing Lydia had always been a rebel. Her parents had her removed from school, because she had gotten in trouble a lot. According to Lydia’s father she had calmed down a lot, and they were looking into letting her go back to school after her OWL’s. The Fawleys were one of the old families that made up the sacred twenty-eight, so in that regard my parents wouldn’t dare to refuse. I had chosen Lydia because she was good friends with Lex. I had written to her, explaining what was going on, and telling her I needed her help. She had promised me she would play her part, and not to tell Lex anything.
My brother and Lex arrived, looking very much at ease with each other. Like a real gentleman he held the door for her, and took her coat before handing it over to the waiter. I almost puked at the way she smiled at him. Throughout lunch my parents questioned her, I felt like they were the Spanish inquisition. Her answers seemed to please my mother. When my father talked politics, something he was fond of, Lex gave some very interesting insights and opinions. Up until that moment I had never known just how much of a smart ass she was. She had won my mother over before the main course, and now, judging by the small smile that played at his lips, that she ad won my father over as well.
After dessert, Lex excused herself, to take a trip to the ladies’ room. As she stood, I knew it was expected of Regulus and me to stand as well, so we did. She didn’t even look fazed at the show of manners. As soon as she was out of earshot, my mother commented on what a lovley lady Regulus had managed to find, and that she approved completely.
I went back to the castle with a terrible headache. The sight of Lex holding on to my brother’s arm engraved in my mind. What was I going to do? What if I was simply too late? I wrote a note to Lydia, as I had promised to keep her informed, and went for a nap. It was the Halloween dance tonight after all.
