Another chapter is here. Hope you like it.
ELSHA: Thank you girl for all your wonderful reviews. I am so glad you like it. I mean novel size of this, really? I can't even express how honored I am to hear it. I have a thing for Severus too. I mean, how could I not? He's brilliant. I am also glad you you're enjoing the magic in the story. We could all use some more of it in the real life.
Several hours after, both wizards were still sitting in the Headmaster’s office. – “I hope you understand Albus, that it might be our only way to get there without killing anyone.” – “I understand Severus and I truly hope that the wards haven’t been changed and they’ll still recognize me.” – “Otherwise, we won’t have any choice but to get through them by force and that might not have a good outcome.” – “I agree with you. I will do everything in my power to help Mister Potter. After all, all of us are forever in his debt.” – “What if you won’t be able to lift the wards from the inside?” Draco asked cautiously. – “I hope my magic is still strong enough for that, Mister Malfoy.” – “There’s always this other choice.” Severus exchanged a knowing look with the Headmaster – “I know Draco, but let’s try not to think about it now. We’ll do what we have to when the time comes.”
Minerva got up from her seat and stepped closer to Albus, putting both of her hands on his shoulders – “The plan sounds good Severus, however removing those wards will require some serious magic that he might not be able to regain without help. The wards on that mansion are much stronger than anything we put here, in Hogwarts.” Albus looked at his deputy Headmistress with endearment – “I don’t think that you should worry about that Minnie” – “Oh shush, Albus. I have no intensions of running this school by myself.” Draco couldn’t suppress a small smile, no one in their right mind would dare to talk like that to the Headmaster. – “Do you have something to say, Mister Malfoy?” Minerva threw young wizard an icy look. – “No, professor.”- “I’ll have the potion that will help him regain his strength ready.” Severus assured the old witch.
They gathered all the needed ingredients from his lab and apparated back to the mansion where both witches were waiting for their return in anticipation. – “Severus. How did it go?” – “It went good, love. The Headmaster agreed to help us.” – “When do we leave then?” – “I’m afraid, I’ll need both of you to stay here.” – “No way, professor.” Ginny said in resentful voice. “Harry is our friend too and there’s no way in hell, we’ll be sitting here and just waiting for your return.” – “I’m glad to see you in good spirits Miss Weasley, however there’s a reason why I want you to stay here.” – “Other than not wanting us to get hurt?” – “Both of your safety is very important, but this time I have another reason for you to stay.” Hermione put a hand on her friend’s shoulder – “What do you want us to do, Severus?”
- “I need you to brew a potion for Albus.” – “Potion?” – “Yes. The one that will help him regain his strength after he’s done lifting the wards. And before you can protest to that Miss Weasley, it’s not your regular pepper up potion or anything that you have used so far.” – “I’m sorry for lashing out on you like that professor, but if that’s something that we haven’t used before, how will we be able to brew it?” – “I brought all the necessary ingredients with me and if I remember correctly, Draco has a lab here” – he said, making his godson blush under the potions master’s direct gaze. – “What? Not all of us had a natural know-it-all talent for everything. I had to do a lot of practice to get high marks from you.” – “That’s one of the reasons I’m offering an apprenticeship to you this year. Now, let’s focus on the problem at hand. Why won’t you show Miss Weasley your lab? I’d like to speak to Hermione, if you don’t mind” – “Of course.”
- “Is there anything else you wanted to tell me?” – “Just how important this potion is. Lifting these particular wards will require a lot of power. He will be completely drained. You won’t have much time to administer it.” – “Severus, I don’t know if we’ll be able to do it, I… I just don’t…” – “If anyone can do it, it’s you. I don’t know any other person who’d be more capable” – “What if we take him back to the castle? Poppy will be able to help him.” – “He’ll be too weak to apparate, plus we’re trying to keep this whole thing under covers. The less people know about it, the better. Minerva is the only one who knows besides us.” He took her hand bringing her close to him, his hands running gently over her shoulders “I believe in you” – “You do?” – “I want to tell you something I never told you before” he said giving her a small smile. – “About what, love?” – “Your NEWT scores” – “What about them?” She gave him a quizzical look – “They were the highest ones in your year.” – “I already knew that” she said, shy smile playing on her lips.
He placed a few fingers under her chin, lifting her head up – “Do you know when, was the last time someone had scores like that?” he asked teasingly. – “Never?” she answered in the same teasing manner, her lips curling up slightly. – “Don’t give yourself too much credit, Miss Granger. Last time scores like that were achieved, was almost twenty two years ago.” – “How do you know that?” she looked at him open-mouthed. – “Because they were mine” – “Yours?” – “Now you know why I want you to brew this potion for Albus. There’s no one else I’d trust with that” – “I’ll try to do my best” – “Here” he said, taking a package out of his robes and handing it to the witch. – “What is that?” – “That’s one of my journals, you’ll find the instructions here. It’s called “Momentanea Potestatis” – “Instant power?” He gave her a warm smile – “That’s my girl” – “You really think we’ll be able to make it?” – “You will. There’s something else, however.” He made a long pause, letting out a deep breath – “There’s a lot of other complicated potions of my own creation in there. Some of them were never meant to be shown to anyone.” – “You don’t need to worry about that, we’ll only need one” – “I’m not keeping any secrets from you, I’m just… I was a different person when I wrote them. I was alone and angry.”
She brought her hand up to his face, her fingers running gently over the pale skin – “You’re not alone anymore. You never will be. I’m here for you for as long as you want me to be” – “I want you be there always” – “Then I will” she said pulling him down for a kiss. - “It’s time” he said when their lips finally parted. “Go get Draco and start on the potion. It will need time to brew and cool before you’ll be able to administer it” – “How much time will we have after he arrives?” – “A few minutes maybe. When he’s done taking down the wards, we’ll need to establish floo from there to here, so we could send him. When he’s here, you’ll need to be ready with the potion and give it to him immediately, otherwise he won’t pull through.”
Harry listened to the voices outside of the door – “Are you sure he’s going to cooperate, my lady?” – “He will. Everyone has their pushing points and Lucius is not an exception.” “Lumos” he heard Kingsley’s voice as the two entered the room, stopping in front of him – “It’s nice to see you again, Lucius” Kingsley said as he grabbed his long hair, pulling blonde wizard’s head up. – “It’s nice to see you too, Minister” Harry said spitefully. – “Shite” he heard older witch’s voice, the end of her wand directed at the dark man’s neck. – “What… what is it my Lady?” – “You’re an idiot, that’s what it is. Crucio” she hissed out, making him fall to his knees in agonizing pain, before turning her gaze to Harry. – “I am very disappointed in this halfwit right now, so I’m going to give you only one chance to answer my question, where is my husband?” – “I’d rather die than answer that” – “If I were you Mister Potter, I’d choose my words carefully, because this is something that can be arranged.”
- “My lady, please…” they heard Kingsley’s strangled voice. – “Oh, for fucks sake. Finite Incantatem” – “Thank you, my Lady” Kingsley whispered, his body still spasming after the curse. - “How could you make such a mistake?” – “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Lucius was in my office at twelve, just as we planned.” – “Well obviously not, because this is not him” she yelled pointing at the blonde wizard. – “How… how do you know that?” – “How do I know that? Look at his eyes, you idiot. Mister Potter polyjuiced himself and tricked you to believe that he was Lucius.” She turned her gaze to the young wizard “But the potion that they keep in the ministry is not as strong as your potion’s professor taught you to make, isn’t it Mister Potter? I’m sure it’s wearing out as we speak. Why won’t you show us that pretty scar of yours to convince the minister that it is really you” she said lifting a few blonde strands from his forehead, watching the lightning bolt scar reveal itself.
- “Potter” the dark wizard looked at him in astonishment “You came to me instead of Lucius. Why? He always hated you” – “He didn’t deserve what you were about to do to him” – “He’s a death eater, who cares? He tortured and killed a lot of innocent people, why would you care if he lives or dies? You know that not all the death eaters did what they did because they wanted to. A lot of them were doing it to protect their families. If Lucius wouldn’t do what the Dark Lord ordered him to, he would kill his son” – “My son was given a chance to prove himself to our Lord and he turned out to be a coward, just like his father” Narcissa said coldly. “Now, tell us where my husband is and I promise I’ll kill you quickly. If not, I swear I’ll make you suffer so much, you’ll be begging me to kill you” – “I don’t know where Lucius is now and I wouldn’t tell you if did” – “You’re trying my patience, boy. Avada…” she lifted her wand pointing it to the young wizard – “No, my Lady” Kingsley said, grabbing her hand “He won’t be of use to us if you kill him now” – “I don’t think Mister Potter here is going to tell us anything, we might just as well dispose of him, before he causes us any more trouble”
- “He might still help us, my Lady. He’ll tell us everything he knows under Veritaserum. After that, we can use his body for the Dark Lord” – “That might actually be a good idea. There isn’t a single person, who’d say anything against everyone’s favorite hero. You’ll become someone you despised the most, Harry” she leaned down to whisper in his ear. “Isn’t it ironic?” – “You’re crazy if you think that I’ll do anything to help you bring that maniac to life again” – “You won’t have any other choice. Bellatrix was not the only one who was gifted in unforgivable curses. Trust me, you’ll help whether you want it or not.” She turned to the dark wizard – “Go to the Ministry and get the potion while I prepare everything here. After he’s done telling us everything he knows, we’ll extract the piece of my Lord’s soul from the diary and place it into his body. Now go, I don’t want to make my Lord wait more than he has to and don’t disappoint me this time, or I will not be that forgiving” – “I understand my Lady” he said respectfully and disappeared with a loud crack.
- “Thank you for doing this, professor” Draco whispered in appreciation. – “You’re quite welcome, my boy” Dumbledore said turning to the potions master – “We’ve been waiting enough, Severus. It’s almost time, I’m afraid if we don’t act now, it will be too late” – “You’re right, Albus. We’ll wait for your sign. Good luck.” Dumbledore apparated to the front gate of the Mansion – “Minister. Did you forget anything?” one of the guards said, bowing his head slightly. – “There has been a change of plans. I’ll need you to gather everyone in the house and get to the Ministry at once. There has been an accident and it will require everyone we have to fix it. You’ll receive further instructions when you’ll get there. Now do what I said, or there will be consequences” – “Of course Minister, whatever you say. Will you be going back with us, sir?” – “No. I have something to do here” he said walking through the door as one of the Aurors opened it in front of him. He watched the Aurors leaving as soon as they heard his orders, till finally there was no one left in the house. Headmaster took out his wand, pointing it into the ceiling “Ab Intus Apertum.”
Jets of bright green light struck out from the end of the Headmaster’s wand one after another, spreading through every room, traveling around the perimeter, lighting the whole place up before returning to the one who cast the spell. – “The wards had been lifted. Let’s go, we don’t have much time” Snape said, blasting out the door of the Mansion and running into the house, Draco following behind him. “Albus” he fell to his knees, taking his old friend’s body into his hands. - “Open the floo, Draco. We need to send him to the mansion right away.” Young wizard pointed his wand to the fireplace, yelling out the spell, watching the hearth lighting up with green flames.” – “It’s ready, we can send him” – “No. Not until it lights up again. They’ll need to open the floo from the other end.” They both watched the fireplace in anticipation until the green flames emerged from it again, advising that the floo has been opened from the other side.
- “Come help me” Severus said, lifting the old wizard’s body from the floor. “He won’t be able to make it on his own. I’ll need you to go with him” – “I can’t… I” – “Yes you can. And you will. He needs your help now” – “So does Harry” – “I’ll bring him to you, I promise” – “What if he’s already…” – “He’s not. You have to believe in him… and in me.” – “Why can’t you take him?” blonde wizard yelled, tears running down from the corners of his eyes. Severus placed both hands on the young wizard’s face, wiping them out with his thumbs – “Draco, I need you to listen to me. Your mother might still be there. If anything goes wrong, will you be able to do what needs to be done?” – “I… I don’t know” – “That’s why I should be the one to go. I’ll bring him to you, I promise. Now please, take professor to the mansion, we’re running out of time” Draco nodded, taking Dumbledore’s body and stepping into the fireplace.
Both witches looked at the bright red potion in front of them – “You think we did everything correctly?” – “I don’t know Ginns, we’ll just have to wait and see. Let’s try to open the floo again. If everything goes according to the plan, they should be arriving here any minute.” Pointing their wands to the hearth, they watched it burst with green flames. Ginny looked at her friend, giving her a relieved sigh – “It worked. Now what?” – “Now we wait.” Few long moments passed before bright green flames emerged from it again, as Draco stepped into the room. – “Draco” – “Help me, quick. We need to give him the potion” he said placing professor onto one of the couches. – “Sure, here it is” Hermione opened the vile, bringing it to the old wizard’s lips. “Hold his head for me” she said pouring the liquid into his mouth. – “How long will it take before it starts working?” Draco asked anxiously. – “I don’t know. If we did everything right, it shouldn’t take long.” – “And if not?” – “Then he’ll die in few minutes time.” Ginny brought her hand to the old wizard’s face – “He’s still breathing. Gods help us now.”
- “What was that?” Harry asked watching the place light up with green lights – “Someone took down the wards” – “It’s over, Narcissa. Let me go now and I’ll make sure you’ll get a life sentence instead of the Kiss. You’ll still be able to see your son from time to time” – “Stop kidding yourself, Potter. The place is full of Aurors. Whoever came to your rescue, won’t stand a chance. Kingsley will be here any minute.” – “I’m afraid the Minister is a little preoccupied at the moment and won’t be able to attend our little gathering any time soon, my Lady” they heard potions master’s deep baritone. - “What are you doing here, you traitor?” – “I’m here to put a stop to your madness, Narcissa. Why won’t you give me the diary and release Mister Potter” he said pointing his wand at the witch. – “Drop your wand, Severus” she hissed, the end of her own shoved directly at the young wizard’s neck. – “You don’t have to do this, Narcissa” – “Drop it, or I’ll kill him” - “Think about it. Kingsley’s days as minster are done, if you kill him, there wouldn’t be anyone to protect you” he said, carefully putting his wand down. – “I don’t need any protection. I am capable of doing the spell by myself, but you’re right about one thing, Severus. I do need him, his body is perfect for the Dark Lord.”
She came closer, picking up his wand from the floor – “Who I don’t need on the other hand, is you. Look at you” she said spitefully “How does it feel Severus, not being able to do anything for the son, just like you weren’t able to do anything for his mother. She curled her lips into a smile before pointing her wand at the raven-haired wizard “Avada Kedavra.” – “No” Harry screamed watching a stream of powerful energy burst out from her wand, going through Snape’s body, throwing him against the one of the walls as professor’s eyes closed with his last breath. Harry couldn’t hold his tears – “You’ll pay for that, even if this is the last thing I’ll ever do” – “Oh, don’t tell me you grew to like your potion’s professor. He has been nothing but an arse to you over the years. I did you a favor. You can thank me later.”
Narcissa threw one last icy look at Snape’s body – “Yeah, what a pity, but he was probably right, Kingsley should’ve been here by now” she said pointing her wand at the young wizard “Stupefy” Harry felt his body getting heavier, powerful magic going through every cell, turning it into a stone hard shell. “Now Mister Potter, let’s get out of here before some other idiot decides to drop unannounced and interrupt my plans.” She grabbed Harry’s hand preparing to apparate, as suddenly a powerful blast of energy threw her away from him. – “Expeliarmus” bellowed familiar voice. - “Severus? How did you…” – “Petrificus Totalus” the dark wizard said, not giving her the time to finish her sentence, pinning her to a place with a complete Body-Bind curse. Turning back to his former student, he pointed his wand at him – “Finite Incantatem” he said, bringing Potter’s body to a normal state and getting rid of the shackles, making him slide down to the floor.
- “Here, drink this” he said bringing the vial to Harry’s lips and pouring the liquid into his mouth. “It will help you regain your strength.” Harry nodded, not being able to say anything. – “You look like you’ve seen a ghost of Merlin, Potter” – “Prof…Professor. How did you… I mean, I saw you die. How are you still alive?” – “Did nothing that I taught you in class penetrate that thick scull of yours?” Snape said lowering himself next to the young wizard while trying to stabilize his own erratic breathing – “I don’t understand, professor.” – “That much I figured” he said curling his into a half smile. – “Professor, I… I still don’t…” – “Come on Potter, I know you haven’t been paying much attention, but I’m sure that even you should remember my speech in your first year.” Harry closed his eyes, taking a trip down the memory lane – “There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class” – “Good Potter, anything else?” – “I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper…” he turned his head taking a long look at his former professor, small smile playing on his lips “put a stopper on death. That what you did, didn’t you? You knew that something like that might happen and you…” he shook his head. “How can I ever thank you?” – “You have to promise me to stop getting your arse into trouble, Potter. I already cheated death twice, I doubt that it’ll work for the third time.” – “I promise.” - “Now let’s go, we need to get to Kingsley, before it’s too late” Severus said taking young wizard’s hand and apparating them both to the Ministry.
- “How long has it been?” – “I’m not sure Ginns, about two hours or so” – “He should have woken up by now, right?” – “Yes. I don’t know, maybe we did something wrong. Maybe Severus should have never trusted me with this potion” Hermione said, lowering her head on her hands” – “Nonsense, if you two wouldn’t brew it correctly, he would’ve been dead by now. You must have done something right” Draco said quietly. “Some potions take longer to come into effect. This particular one is supposed to help him regain not only magical strength, but his life energy as well. With age, every living process slows down to accommodate the body. At his age, the whole organism functions slower, therefore his reactions to the potion might not be as fast as we hoped.”
- “An excellent point, Mister Malfoy. Severus was right to offer you an apprenticeship” they heard Headmaster’s weakened voice. – “Professor, how are you feeling?” – “I am all right. Some rest wouldn’t hurt, but I’ll be fine thanks to all of you.” – “Professor, what you did back there… thank you” – “You’re quite welcome, my boy. I am glad that the wards recognized me, to tell you the truth, I was a bit unsure if they would, but I suppose with all that extracurricular activities that our Minister has been involving himself into, changing the wards was the last thing on his mind.” Draco nodded in agreement. – “Have any of you heard anything from Severus?” – “No” – “You shouldn’t lose hope. I’m sure he and Mister Potter will join us shortly. Now Miss Weasley” he said, familiar twinkle appearing in his eye again “madam Pomfrey has been complaining that you haven’t been visiting as often as you have to.”
