Hey everyone! I got this chapter written in about 3 hours so I figured I would post it today instead of tomorrow. Just a heads up, this chapter is strictly all Hermione which means that next chapter is all Draco and then we will get into some good stuff. I'm still not sure how many chapters this story will have because I am going to the end of the year with them with a possible epilogy. This chapter seems a little short as well. I'm thinking that Draco's chapter will be a little longer. As always, I await your reviews and responces from the last chapter are at the bottom.
“Have you talked to him at all since Wednesday?” Ginny asked.
“No. He said he wanted some time to think.” Hermione turned to Pansy, who was sitting with them at the Gryffindor table Friday night. “Has he said anything to you?”
“Not since Wednesday night when he told us you had had a row. He hasn’t even talked to the boys.”
Hermione looked down as the entrées turned into desserts. The chatter around the hall started to turn to murmurs.
“Why is Kingsley here?” Ginny asked.
Hermione and Pansy shook their heads. “I have a meeting with him and a few others.” Harry answered.
McGonagall and Kingsley made their way over to them. “Harry m’boy! It’s great to see you! How are things?”
“A little stressful right now. Tests are looming over us.”
“Ah, yes. Lots of studying. But Hermione here has been helping, yes?”
“Oh, yes.”
“That’s good. And how have you been, Hermione?”
“I’m doing good,” Hermione replied with her best fake smile. She didn’t really want to discuss her personal problem with the Minister.
“Good, good.” He moved on to greet Pansy and Ginny and Hermione went back to pushing her food around.
“Shall we Minister?” Hermione’s head snapped up. Standing in front of her was the one person she was trying so hard to give space to. Next to Draco stood Theo, Blaise, and Ron.
“What’s going on?” Pansy asked.
“Nothing to worry about, dear,” Theo said. “Draco simply asked us to accompany him to his meeting with the minister.”
Hermione’s eyes hadn’t left the side of Draco’s face. “Draco’s meeting?” His eyes snapped right to Hermione’s for the first time in two days. “I thought Harry said it was his meeting.”
“I…I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I shou-“
“It’s fine. You don’t have to tell me anything and you don’t have to explain yourself. If you did, than what would be the point of having space and time to think?” Hermione said hastily. She wiped her mouth and added, “I think I’m going to retire for the night.”
“Actually, Ms. Granger,” McGonagall said. “This meeting is for you as well as Ms. Parkinson, Ms. Weasley, and Ms. Greengrass. If you ladies could please follow us.” The girls looked at each other as they got up to follow McGonagall, Kingsley, and the boys.
Instead of going to McGonagall’s office, they lead the group out of the castle, across the grounds, into Hogsmead, and straight to the Threebroomsticks. Hermione stayed as far away from Draco as possible, determined to give him space still.
“Mum?” Ginny said as they all entered an upstairs meeting room.
“Oh, Ginny dear. You’re okay.” Molly pulled her into a tight hug.
“What’s going on?” Ron asked.
Hermione looked around and noticed everyone’s parents were there. She tried not to look at Narcissa and Draco, but noticed, out of the corner of her eye, that Draco was being scolded.
After hugging Molly as well, Hermione turned and was face-to-face with Narcissa.
“Oh, Hermione, dear,” she said pulling Hermione into a hug. “I am so sorry that he has put you through this. His father use to do the same thing to me during these circumstances. When was the last time he spoke to you?”
“Umm…Wednesday. What circumstances?”
“Okay everyone. Please get settled. We have a lot to discuss.” Kingsley called everyone together. “Does everyone else, besides Mrs. Malfoy and Draco, know why we are here?” He was met with silence.
“Something fishy is going on, obviously.” Blaise stated.
“In a sense, Mr. Zabini,” McGonagall said.
“Is this about the article?” Ginny asked.
“More so about the responces.” Kingsley said. “We were prepared for a few nasty letters, but not threats.”
“Threats?” Pansy asked.
Hermione looked at Ginny confused. Ginny’s eyes widened after a moment of confusion.
“Excuse me for a second.” Ginny stood in the quiet room and walked over to Draco. With every word she spoke, he received a hit. “She.is.ed.u.ca.tion.smart.not.re.la.tion.ship.smart. you.dun.der.head.” Theo, Blaise, Harry, and Ron tried hard to cover their snickers as Ginny sat back down.
“Can someone please explain what is going on?”
“No need,” Ginny replied. “She’ll catch up in a minute and then be ahead of you.”
“Right.” Kingsley said. “The safety of you students is our top priority. So until we get to the bottom of who sent this threat-“
“Are you kidding me?” At last, Hermione figured it out. “You’re saying that someone among us received a death threat in our hate mail and unless the recipient of this threat did what was asked, their life and possibly other lives would be harmed.”
“Told you” Ginny said quietly.
“There is one person that I can think of, but he will have alibi’s and a strong cover so he will deny everything.”
“What’s his name?” McGonagall asked.
Hermione turned to Mr. Weasley. “Patrick Johnson.” Without saying another word and before another word was spoken, she got up and left.
Hermione stood at the fence, starring at the Shrieking Shack. Does he truly think he’s doing me a favor by breaking up with me? I stood by Harry fucking Potter and defeated Voldemort. I can take care of myself. Why didn’t he tell me about the letter? Maybe I should have been more concerned with him. We do typically do what I want to do. Why didn’t he say something sooner?
Hermione heard footsteps approaching, but didn’t bother to turn around. After a few silent minutes, she broke down. “Why didn’t he say anything? Why did he just want to call it quits?” She said through tears.
“Because he loves you that much ‘Mione,” Harry replied. “Don’t you remember that I cut things off with Ginny at Dumbledore’s funeral?”
“That’s different.” Harry pulled her close. “We were leaving.”
“But I did it to keep her safe. If something were to happen to me, I knew that she would be safe because she had no ties to me. That’s how much he loves you. He wants to make sure you are safe. Draco hates himself for putting you in danger.”
“He didn’t put me in danger. I can take care of myself.”
“I’m not saying you can’t and neither is he. Ginny has proven to me that she can take care of herself, but that’s not going to stop me from doing everything I can to protect her. We protect the ones we love, no matter the cost.” Hermione sniffled. “Ginny would do the same for me. During the battle when I stopped Molly from battling Voldemort, the whole time Arthur was trying to hold her back. And I know, as does Draco, that you will do everything you can to protect him, right?”
“Right.” Hermione put her head on Harry’s shoulder. “Do you think he meant what he said about calling it quits and that we always do what I want to do?”
“I don’t think he was serious about breaking up with you. As for doing what you want to do, you would have to ask him. Did you mean what you said when you called yourself a mudblood?”
Hermine sighed. “No. I was just upset.”
“Calling yourself that upset him too, you know. It was like you through the past back in his face.”
“I guess I didn’t think about that.”
“Sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering if I could have a few moments alone with Hermione.” They turned to see Narcissa standing a few feet away.
Harry looked at Hermione. “I’m okay, Harry. Thank you.” Harry gave her a hug and walked away. Not a moment later Narcisssa stood in his spot.
“Please don’t blame Draco for not telling you. He is use to having to deal with these sort of issues by myself. Lucius would be the one to thank for that. Draco is not use to having someone else to look after. He’s never been in love before.”
“I just wish he told me. We are a couple and we should have figured this out together.”
“I couldn’t agree more. It’s going to take some time though.” Hermione shivered as flurries started to fall. “He really does love you, you know.”
Hermione smiled. “I know. And I really love him, too.” They stood quietly for a few minutes. “He’s not completely to blame for the lack of communications, though. I was like this in the beginning.”
“It’s not easy to trust someone whole heartedly right from the start. Lucius and I were the worst at communicating.”
“How did you overcome it?”
“We vowed that every night before bed we would tell each other everything. One would start and the other wasn’t allowed to speak until that person’s time was up. Then, before the second person could voice their part, they had to sum up what the first person said. It would continue until we were both talking instead of yelling. Sometimes I would take hours. But we always went to bed at the same time, no longer upset, if that’s what that nights conversing was about.”
“So you never went to bed angry or upset with each other?”
“Not until Voldemort came to power the first time. It was never the same after that.”
“Thank you. If Draco and I are still together, I think that is something we will try.”
“If I know my son, he loves you too much to let you go.”
LadyShire: Hate mail was inevitable because people are still trying to get use to the idea that purebloods don't rule the wizarding world. As for who sent the death threats I'm not going to reveal that just yet, but I was thinking about your guesses before you said them. I honestly thought that you were reading my mind. I hope this chapter answers at least a few questions. Draco will explain more in the next chapter. I 'm silently hoping that you will still be thinking about my story while I'm writing the next few chapters so just letting you know now, other then Lucius and Patrick, there is one other person involved in this story that hasn't been mentioned in some time but still has a role to play (not that I'm going to tell you who it is or what their role is). Just thought I would let you know.
