Chapter 20: Two Halves Become Whole
September 29th, Monday
A little less than a week after
the incident in the common room Draco had yet to confront Harry about his
accidental admission. It wasn’t that he
hadn’t wanted to or tried. It was just that
every time he even started to say a syllable that Harry suspected was leading
to that specific topic the boy blushed a brilliant
scarlet and immediately began to babble about Quidditch
or took off to look for Ron. Truth be
told, Draco was beginning to get a bit frustrated.
Sirius slammed into the common
room then and straight into the dormitory.
Draco smirked. At least he wasn’t
the only one. He knew damn well that
Eris wasn’t going to quickly forgive Black for purposefully flirting in front of
her, especially not with another beautiful member of the elven
species. The portrait door swung open
again and Harry stepped in, only to stop dead in his tracks upon sighting
Draco. The blond felt a strange feeling
of déjà vu, but he knew that their positions had been reversed the last time
they’d played this silly game of cat and mouse.
“Harry, we really need to talk,” Draco said
firmly and tried not to wince when he heard Harry’s visible gulp. “I know that you’re nervous and unsure about
this, but I’d appreciate you letting me in on your thoughts if you’ve actually
chosen me for your mate.”
Harry seemed to be trembling a
bit, but as sympathetic as Draco was he needed to be strong in this case. Caving in and comforting the other boy would
only result in another delay of this discussion. “Am I to understand that you wouldn’t
object?”
Draco smiled slightly at Harry’s
word choice. Snape was rubbing off on
the young wizard. “You know very well
that I would have gladly cursed any of your other potentials to win your
approval and selection.”
Harry giggled nervously. “That’s pretty flattering actually.”
“Well that would be the point,” Draco
drawled. “Now, do you want to go
somewhere private to talk about this?”
Harry looked thoughtful for a
moment. “Let’s just use Eris’ “secret”
room. She taught me how to ward it so
that no one else can get in. We won’t
have to worry about eavesdroppers that way.”
Draco nodded and motioned for
Harry to lead the way. As they entered
and settled into the room, he wondered if he
was ready to be the one to take charge as it seemed that Harry’s legendary
Gryffindor courage was failing him in this case.
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry settled himself
lightly on the comfortable couch and was nervously picking at invisible lint on
his school robes. Draco had, thankfully,
chosen to sit in the armchair. Harry
hoped that the Slytherin would continue to give such respect to his space
throughout their discussion.
“Now,” Draco began lightly, “how should we
start this? Are we to base this
discussion on the premise that you have indeed chosen me, or are we just going
to say that I’m the top possibility at the moment?”
Harry took a deep breath and
studied Draco for a moment. He knew he
wanted the other young man for his partner.
Once the idea had really gotten under his skin no one
else seemed at all appealing.
They’d been getting on so well lately too that he could almost consider
their future one of two very close friends.
Friends who just happened to possibly have a few
children together. Oh Merlin, who
was he kidding?”
“I don’t really have the luxury of time here,
Draco,” Harry said softly. “I should
consider myself quite grateful that I found any other potentials at all. That being said, I don’t want you to think
that I find you less that completely worthy in any way. I simply find myself feeling quite shy about
it all.”
Draco stood and began to
pace. The movement made Harry feel less
at ease, but he tried to hold on to his control. “We’ve been able to get on wonderfully as
friends, Harry and I think that is rather important if we’re to have a
relationship.”
“I completely agree,” Harry said firmly.
Draco pinned him with a heated
look then, one that stopped his breath.
“But make no mistake, Harry, I would want a good deal more than
friendship and an heir or two out of this.
I’d want you. I would demand a complete romantic and physical
relationship with you. I would give you
time of course, but I just want that out on the table.”
Harry finally sucked in his
breath. “I figured as much. I don’t think it would be possible for
anything else with a bond like this, actually.”
Suddenly Draco was kneeling before
him, clasping his hands gently. “And
does that seem so bad, Harry? Could you
see all that with me? A
family, a friendship, happiness…love?”
Harry’s hearing seemed to phase
out as the blood pounded in his ears. He
knew that Draco was a good person. He knew
that they could get along wonderfully despite the occasional arguments. Hell, there was no point in trying to avoid
the knowledge that he was attracted to the blond. Unconsciously, he leaned down closer to the
blond. What Draco was offering wasn’t just
what the elf in him wanted, it was what he
had wanted for most of his life. Man or
woman, he saw that hit didn’t matter now if it was love and companionship.
“I think I could definitely live
with that,” he said softly.
Draco’s smile was void of any sign
of triumph or smugness. It was simply a
smile of contentment and happiness as he pulled Harry down into a gentle
kiss. Harry closed his eyes and opened
his magic up to Draco’s. The blond
pulled back with a gasp. “Are you sure you’re
ready?”
Harry nodded and moved to kneel on
the floor in front of Draco. “We don’t
have to…to…you know to bond. At least
not right away, but Eris said that the kissing and close proximity are what
initialize it. Are you ready?”
Draco smiled and pulled him close
again. “You need to ask?”
Harry chuckled a bit nervously and
tilted his head up to receive another kiss.
It was gentle, warm and moist.
There was a funny fluttering in his stomach and a tension began to coil
within it and the kiss intensified and his magic swirled around them. He spare one moment to think that Severus
might be upset with him for his actions
before he surrendered completely to how perfect Draco’s arms around him
felt. He could never bond with another. This was what he wanted.

Eris was happily playing a game of
Exploding Snap with Ginny on her dormitory bed when the dizziness began. Hermione was sitting on the next bed over
with Ron, both of them watching with ‘Mione cheering
on Ginny and Ron rooting for her. Eris
was glad that the three of them had been so silent on the subject of Sirius the
past few days. She shook off the
dizziness and planned move. It was
probably just happening because she’d eaten so little since her fight with her intended. Elves did not fair well when at odds with
their mates. She silently hoped that
Sirius was feeling well, though she was still too angry with him to admit to
caring.
They’d
tried talking on several occasions, but the tensions was heavy and the talks
usually ended badly. Twice they’d
shouted more hurtful things at one another, though it was never as bad as that
first awful fallout. It hurt even more
because she knew that she was meant for him, knew that she was slowly falling
in love with his easy smile and playful nature (no matter what she’d said to
the contrary in the heat of anger).
“Come on, Eris,” Ron said happily. “You’re going to take her down and then I can
trounce you in a game of chess!”
Eris smiled and rolled her
eyes. Then another wave of dizziness hit
her. Ginny managed to keep her from
toppling off the bed. Her vision went
fuzzy and she was vaguely aware of strong arms, which she assumed belonged to
Ron, grabbing hold of her and pulling her into the safety of their embrace.
She heard
Hermione’s voice, seeming oddly distant, calling to her. “Eris!
Eris, are you alright? What
happened?”
She
wanted to answer, but another wave of emotion hit her and it suddenly seemed at
though her whole world tilted a bit.
Something inside of her shifted and it seemed as though her awareness of
Harry was changing…or maybe it was that Harry was changing. Nothing about the sensation signaled that her
brother was in danger, quite the opposite really. He seemed very happy at the moment. So what could he be…oh.
“Oh goodness,” she said softly. Her vision cleared and she could finally make
out Ginny and Hermione’s worried faces.
She gave Ron’s arm a squeeze and he slowly helped her to her feet and
released her. “I think…I think Harry
just bonded.”
Well, at least her companions
looked as bewildered as she felt.

Severus stirred his potion slowly
and tried to ignore Black’s ravings. Why
the mutt had chosen to storm into his
lab of all places was beyond him.
“I know I did a stupid thing…but…but she just
won’t let it go,” Black said with a touch of a forlorn wail that Severus was
sure would soon give him a migraine.
“Why won’t she let me get close?
I’m completely lost to her now, totally head over heels for her. If she chose someone else now I think it
would kill me.”
Severus set his ladle aside with a
sigh. “It wouldn’t kill you.”
Black looked angry then. “I’m telling you, Snape, this goes beyond the
simple power of her…I don’t know…elven allure or bond
or whatever! I’m, Merlin, I’m falling in
love with her for her. I don’t need some stupid bit of magical
compatibility to love her. I would love
her if she was a hippogriff!”
Severus snorted. “That seems a tad extreme, but I do believe
that I understand your point.”
“Yeah?
Well part of the point is that she loves you more than she’ll ever love
me, bond or no.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Severus spat in
exasperation. “No matter her feelings
for me, you would always be her top priority if you were to bond. I can’t see why you would…”
A wave of
dizziness hit him and Severus saw stars.
Unfortunately, he could also see the ground rushing up to meet him, but,
miracle of miracles, Black actually jumped into action and saved him a broken
nose.
“Snape?
Hey, Severus, are you alright.”
Severus was touched by the concern in Black’s voice. Really.
“What in the seven hells was that about,” he
was groggily. That was when he realized
that something was different about his connection with Harry. It was almost as if he could…well hell, he
was sensing someone else through Harry.
That was when the realization clicked.
“Well the little shit has done it this time.”
Black looked thoroughly confused
and a bit worried. “What’s happened?”
“Your godson has gone and bonded,” Severus bit
out. “Without
bothering to warn anyone of course.
Damn, he hasn’t even suggested who he might choose.”
Black frowned. “Isn’t it Draco?”
Severus sighed. “I can’t tell, but I certainly hope so. At least he wouldn’t be acting like a
complete fool then. Still, he might have
given his sister and I a warning. That was one hell of a wave of magic. I hope Eris was sitting down.”
He’d barely finished his sentence
before Black was out the door. Severus
sighed. At least that meant he only
needed to hunt down one of his charges for the moment.

“Harry James Potter, couldn’t you have
at least hinted that you were up to something,” Eris shrieked. “What if Severus or I had been flying? What if we’d been up on the Astronomy tower
roof? What if we’d been…”
“Dangling over the edge of a cliff,” Sirius
said dryly, cutting Eris off. She really
was overreacting. At least he thought
so. Besides, he didn’t like the look of
sadness that was filling his godson’s eyes.
He knew that Eris didn’t disapprove of Harry’s bonding with Draco, she
was just a bit peeved.
Eris sighed. “Yes, well…if you plan on messing with my
brains waves in the future could you warn me?”
Sirius was happy when Harry
offered his sister a weak smile. “I’ll
make sure to do that.”
That was
when Remus piped up. “Don’t you think
that you should have mentioned to someone that you were about to make such a
life altering decision? This was a big
step, Harry. It’s a vital part of your
future and…well if only for sentimental reasons some of us would have liked to
have been included.”
“We’ll have a ceremony eventually, of course,”
Draco said coolly. “Everyone will be
welcome to be present.”
“That’s not the point, Draco,” Snape said
firmly. Sirius cringed. This couldn’t be good. “Neither one of you took any consideration
for what might have happened during. You
were only thinking of the end result.
Harry barely knew what he was doing!
Other people were affected as well.
We were never certain as to how twins would react to one another’s
bonding. What if you had sent Eris into
a frenzied need to bond when she hasn’t even chosen a partner yet?”
Secretly, Sirius didn’t think that
would have been so bad, but he knew that it was a selfish thought. Harry was looking rather distraught and Draco
looked down right mad. It was funny
really. Sirius had been assuming all
along that Harry would be quite dominate in the relationship because he was the
elf, but Draco appeared to be…er…in charge at the
moment. Perhaps it was going to be more
of a equal situation.
“I’m sorry,” Harry said miserably and ran off
for the dorm. Sirius gazed after him
sadly.
“I hope you’re all happy,” Draco spat and
hurried off after his mate.
“Well that didn’t go so well,” Sirius said
softly.
“Do you think,” Eris snapped.
Sirius clenched his fists. “Harry needed to bond with his mate
eventually. It’s important for both his
happiness and the outcome of the war!”
“Oh, is that what’s
important,” Eris snarled. “Tell me,
which one is the priority, Sirius? What
if he wasn’t really ready?”
“You’re not even talking about him now, so
just shut it,” Sirius said coldly. “You
come find me when you think I can actually manage to do or say something right
around you.”
Without
another word, Sirius marched from the room.
He wasn’t only upset with Eris, he just
couldn’t help but be a bit envious of Harry and Draco. Was he ever going to have that with his elf?

October 2nd
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
“Eris,
you really need to keep calm with Sirius,” Regulus said gently. “Things would be better all around if you
simply told him the truth. The WHOLE truth.”
Eris glowered at her
companion. “The whole truth would do
nothing but send him and everyone else into a mindless panic. Just drop it.
I made up with Harry and Draco, we all did. They’re fine now and seem very happy. Harry’s power is steadily increasing.”
“That’s wonderful,” Regulus said
gently. “Now, on to
business. The Hufflepuff
Cup. I can help you find it.”
“Oh,” Eris said quietly. “Is that why you’ve finally come back then?”
Eris was certain that Regulus was blushing then “Er…well…yes,
but I would have visited sooner, but…er…you were…”
“Oh,
spit it out all ready!”
“You were having some
interesting dreams,” Regulus said. He
smirked then. “I do believe they starred
my brother for the most part, though Severus was there once or twice. Mind you, these are things I only noticed for
a moment before I beat a hasty retreat.”
Eris sat in stunned silence for a moment before clearing her throat and
speaking slowly. “Well, thank you…I
think.”
Regulus chuckled. “I wouldn’t
want to embarrass you too much.”
Eris grinned. “Okay, okay, tell
me about this cup already.”
“The key is to open that little
box you found in the tunnels beneath Grimmauld Place,” Regulus said.
Eris frowned. “It would have
been good to know that before we went in.
We almost left it behind.”
Regulus looked sheepish. “I had
no idea that was where the box was located, but I am aware of what is contained
within it. The Hufflepuff cup was placed
in my mother’s care. Within the box
there is a map which will lead to the Horcrux. What you need from is the knowledge of where
to start.”
“Excellent,” Eris said
happily. “This means that we’ll really
only have to hunt down one of the Horcruxes in the
end and figure out how to reach Nagini. Merciless Medea! What would we have done without you? It could have taken…I don’t know…years!”
“Flattery will get you
everywhere my sweet elf,” Regulus said with a cheeky grin. “Now, the cup is being held in one of my
families older estates in France. It’s
a chateau in the Loire river valley, not far from Tours.”
“We get to go to France,” Eris said in an excited tone.
Regulus sighed and gave her a stern look. “I know you’ve never really gotten out much,
but this is some pleasure trip you’re going on.”
“I know. I’ve just always wanted to spend some time
traveling in France. Felicity has never been fond
of traveling and she doesn’t seem to like France very much,” Eris said softly, thinking
fondly of her guardian. “We went to
various places in Italy one summer, but for the most part I think she was afraid to take me
away from the safety of the manor.”
“How is your guardian?”
“She’s doing very well,” Eris
said brightly. “She’s even been up
walking a bit. Greg and Blaise have been
angels. Since Harry and I are so busy,
they go spend time with her for me and help with her physical therapy.”
“Excellent. Now the chateau you’re going to
is called Villandry,” Regulus said with a reluctant
smile. “There’s just one, tiny problem.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s been out of my family’s
hands for generations.” Regulus
sighed. “Though we didn’t precisely own
it anymore, all of the magical protections are still in place, but only
extremely special circumstances set them off.
It’s actually a Muggle tourist attraction these days and should be very
safe to enter as long as you avoid specific areas of the chateau.”
“Okay,” Eris said
carefully. “How do I open the box?”
“I’m sure you’ve noticed the
glyphs on four sides of the box,” Regulus said. “Beginning with the ankh, press the symbols in
one at a time while turning the box clockwise.
When you pressed them all in, twist the pyramid figurine on the lid
counter clockwise three times and it should pop open.”
“Wonderful. We should be able to go after
the cup this weekend and knock one more Horcrux
down.” Eris gave Regulus a quick hug and
prepared herself to reenter the physical world.
“Any words of wisdom before I head off?”
“Yes,” Regulus said
solemnly. “No matter what you do stay
away from the gardens at Villandry. Don’t go near them. Don’t cast spells at them. And under absolutely no circumstances are you
to go in them. No one but the owners of
the property, keyed to the wards, can escape the gardens. The presence of any magical being within them
will bring them to life. Stay within the
chateau itself and it should be a piece of cake.”
Eris smiled grimly. “Good to
know. At least this one should hopefully
go better than Grimmauld Place did.”
“Hey, any time you come out
alive is a good time.”
Eris had to admit that she definitely agreed.
