An Afternoon Out
It was a hot July afternoon and James was sitting quietly on the couch skimming over a magazine. He looked up at the window when he heard a car pull up the driveway. Molly Weasley soon climbed out of the passenger side followed by her three oldest sons.
James stood up to greet them when Mitsy the house elf let them all in. “Hello Molly,” he smiled. “Lily is lying down in the den. I’ll go get her.”
“No, no, I’ll go get her,” Molly protested waving her hand at him. She left the room and soon came back out with Lily.
“So when are you bringing her back?” James asked sitting back down.
“Maybe never,” Molly chuckled softly.
Lily smiled and put her coat on. “I’ll probably be back later tonight.”
He nodded and motioned for the boys to sit down. “Where are the twins?”
“They’re at my mother’s with Ron,” Molly answered. “I didn’t want to overwhelm you. It’s really good of you to take them for the afternoon.”
“It’s no trouble. I like spending time with them. And anyway, you’re helping Lily by spending time with her and helping her to relax.”
“I’m glad to do it,” she smiled ushering Lily out the door. “I’ll take good care of her. Now you boys behave.”
“We will,” they answered in unison.
The two women walked out the door. Lily turned around and blew her husband a kiss before she shut the door behind her. James returned the kiss then sat back on the couch watching them drive away.
Then he turned his attention to the boys. “Well, it’s just us boys now. What would you like to do?”
“Can you teach me to play chess?” Bill asked. “I’ve been wanting to learn but Mum and Dad never seem to have the time.”
James laughed softly. “Of course I can. But I had something else in mind to do first. Bill, did your Mum take you to get your school supplies for your first year at Hogwarts yet?”
“No, why?” Bill answered, wondering why he wanted to know.
“Because I thought maybe I would take you. I’m thinking of getting your stuff too Charlie, since you’ll be starting next year.”
Both boys’ eyes went wide with excitement. “Really?” Bill asked with a smile. His smile quickly faded. “Mum’s not going to like it though.”
“You just leave your Mum to me,” James smiled as he stood up. “I was thinking that we should go now and beat the afternoon crowd. Then I have another surprise for you.” He held both hands out. “Come on, we’ll go by apparition. Form a circle and grab my hands.”
All three boys stood up and Charlie and Bill each grabbed one of his hands. Then they pulled their youngest brother Percy between them.
James closed his eyes and concentrated hard on his intended destination. Then suddenly the ground dissolved under the group and everything around them went black. In the blink of an eye they were all standing in Diagon Alley right in front of the robe shop. “First stop school robes.”
He followed the boys inside the nearly empty shop. A middle aged blond witch greeted them from behind the counter. “You boy’s here for Hogwarts uniforms?”
James nodded. “Yes, for these two young men.”
The witch nodded and ushered the boys over to stand in front of a large mirror. She took their measurements and disappeared into the back room; coming out a few minutes later with two large bags. “Here you are,” she smiled handing the bags over.
James paid for them and walked back out into the street. “So where to next?”
The four of them spent the rest of the morning and part of the early afternoon shopping for school supplies. Then he took them to a little café for some lunch. Once they were finished eating the boys followed James down the street until he stopped in front of Knockturn Alley.
“We’re not allowed in there,” Percy suddenly spoke up.
James looked down at Bill and Charlie with a half amused, half annoyed expression. “Are you sure he’s related to you.”
“No,” Bill grinned up at him. “Charlie and I think Mum brought home the wrong baby.”
James knelt down so that he was face to face with the young boy. “Now Percy, I know your Mum doesn’t want you boys going down there, and I understand why. But I need a few things that I can only get down there. So you just stay real close to me, and whatever you do, don’t tell your Mum ok?”
The young Weasley thought for a moment and then nodded. “Ok. “
Shaking his head James started down the dark street. The boys followed close behind him looking around with wide eyes. “Wicked!” Bill cried out when he saw a store window with shrunken heads on display.
James came to a stop in front of the shady dealer and turned to face the boys with a dead serious expression. “Remember, stay close and touch NOTHING.”
The boys nodded and followed him inside. The inside of the shop was dimly lit and the walls were lined with shelves full of boxes. A rather pale dark haired wizard came out from behind the counter. “Ah, Mr. Potter!” the man grinned wickedly. “What can I get for you today?”
“I need three ounces of death weed and a pound of creeper moss,” James spoke to the man.
With a nod the man moved to grab two bags out from under the counter. In one of them he scooped in large amounts of a deep green, almost black moss. Then he slipped on some heavy gloves and disappeared into the back room. He came out moments later with a bag full of large white flowers. He set both bags on the counter. “Let’s see, that’ll be six galleons and 44 sickles.”
James handed over the coins then ushered the boys out. “That was awesome!” Bill grinned. “Where are we going now?”
“Hogwarts,” James answered.
“Really?” Bill cried out with excitement.
James nodded. “I thought I’d give you boys the grand tour. I don’t think anyone will mind.”
They all gathered in a circle holding hands again. James closed his eyes in concentration porting everyone right in front of the gates.
The boys opened their eyes and stared up in awe. “Is this really it?” Charlie asked with a big grin on his face.”
“Yep, now come on. I’ve got loads to show you.”
Dumbledore sat behind his desk staring off into space while Severus was recounting what happened at the Death Eater meeting. “Albus, are you even listening?” the potions master asked becoming annoyed.
“What? Oh, sorry, must’ve drifted off,” the older wizard shook his head as he came out of his deep thoughts.
Severus sighed in frustration. “Then I suppose we should continue this another time. By the way, are you coming to James’ surprise birthday party tomorrow?”
“No, I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it. I’ve got too many things to do before the start of term.”
“I don’t know why I even bothered asking,” Severus remarked snidely.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Dumbledore glared up at him defensively.
“Nothing. It’s just that you never attend his birthday parties. You only recently started coming to Christmas dinners with Minerva.”
“Can I help it if I’m a busy man!” the older wizard stood up and moved over to stand directly in front of Severus. “Being the headmaster of a school isn’t easy you know.”
Severus shrugged. “That may be, but one would think you could at least make an appearance at a birthday party.”
“James is the reason I’m busy!” Dumbledore shouted.
“Oh?” Severus raised an eyebrow. “Do tell.”
“If you must know, I have to see someone concerning the Prophecy of the Phoenix.”
“And why is that so important that it can’t wait?” Severus asked with a heavy sigh.
“Do I have to repeat the prophecy to you? Tomorrow is James’ birthday and Lily is pregnant!”
“So?” Severus asked becoming impatient.
“So, the son of the Phoenix is prophesized to be born on the same day as the Phoenix.” Dumbledore moved back to sit at his desk. “I thought we were safe since the baby wasn’t originally due until September. But then come to find out the baby is way ahead of schedule. The worst part is there’s no rhyme or reason for it. If James really is the Phoenix I need to keep this prophecy from coming true. I need to find a way to protect him! Now, do you still think a birthday party is more important?”
Severus bit his lip and walked over toward the door. “James has always said that what is meant to happen will happen. But I’ll leave you to your thoughts.” He stepped outside then turned to face the older wizard before closing the door. “By the way, I wouldn’t concern yourself until the child really is born tomorrow; which isn’t likely to happen”
“Do you really think we’ll be put in Gryffindor?” Bill asked following James up the staircase.
James shrugged. “I guess so. I mean both your parents were in Gryffindor. If you two aren’t I’ll be surprised.”
He turned a few corners with the boys close behind and stopped in front of a large portrait with a fat lady. “What are you doing here?” she asked when she saw them.
“I’m here because I want to be. Now let us in,” James commanded.
“School hasn’t started yet. No one is allowed in until school has started and they have the password.”
“If you don’t know who I am I’m insulted. Let us in or I’ll set you on fire,” he threatened.
“Is that your answer for everything?” the fat lady shouted as she slowly swung the portrait open to reveal a hole in the wall.
“It works,” James mumbled as he climbed through into Gryffindor Tower.
“Wow,” was all either boy could say as they looked around the common room.
“So I take it you like,” James chuckled. “Come on, I’ll show you the bedrooms and showers.”
He climbed the stairs and stopped at the top; lightly running his fingers over the cold stone with a far away look in his eyes. “This is where my bedroom used to be.”
“How could you have had a bedroom there”? Charlie asked. “That’s a wall.”
With a soft sigh James turned around to face them. “I put up an enchanted door. Basically when it’s up on a wall there’s a room behind it. I enchanted it myself in my third year.”
Before he could say anymore he was interrupted by Lily’s voice coming from the fireplace. “James, are you there?” she shouted.
“Yes, I’m here,” he called out as he jumped over the railing and landed gracefully on the floor. “Did you need me for something?” he asked as he moved over to the fireplace.
“I was just looking for you to tell you that I won’t be coming home tonight.”
“Why? Is something wrong?” James asked sounding worried.
“Don’t worry sweetheart. I’m just not feeling well, but I should be fine with a good night’s rest. Would you mind keeping the boys overnight?”
“No, of course not, but are you sure you don’t want me to come over and maybe bring you something?”
She sighed softly; her image smiling up at him. “Don’t worry so much James. Just come here to the Burrow and pick me up around lunch time ok? Then we can go out for your birthday dinner.”
He nodded. “Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m quite sure. I’ll see you tomorrow. I love you.”
“I love you too.” He blew her a kiss as her image faded from sight.
It took both Arthur and Molly to help pull Lily from the fireplace. “So, does he suspect?” Molly asked with a hint of excitement in her voice.
“Nope,” Lily grinned. “For once I think he’s clueless. What time do I need to be up to start getting everything ready?”
“Don’t you worry about a thing dear. You need to stay off your feet,” Molly chided as she helped Lily over to the couch. “Just leave everything to me.”
“But there’s a lot to be done,” Lily protested.
Molly shook her head. “Don’t worry about it I said! We’re happy to do it. Arthur, did you get a present for him yet?”
He nodded. “Yep, I think I finally found something he’ll like.”
“You didn’t need to get him anything,” Lily spoke up. “This party is enough.”
“Nonsense,” Arthur said as he dug in his pocket for something. He pulled out a small white box and opened it to show the contents to Lily. “Do you think he’ll like it?”
“Oh Arthur!” she exclaimed breathlessly.
“I thought he might like a really old gold coin. He likes to collect old things. It’s from the middle ages.”
“I’m sure he will… But Arthur, how much did that cost you?”
“Don’t worry about it,” he smiled. “James is worth it. He’s been a good friend.”
“At least let me pay for half of it,” Lily argued.
“No, it’s our present to him. We want to give it to him,” Arthur said as he put the box back in his pocket.
Lily sighed deeply and lay back, propping her feet up. “Stubborn people,” she mumbled under her breath.
“We could say the same about you,” Molly replied as she went back to work.
