Chapter 23 A visit to Hogsmead
The following day Nina sat through Arithmancy in the morning and History of Magic in the afternoon. She was allowed to sit with Hermione, Ron and Harry in the History lesson but Harry and Ron were still not talking to her. When the lesson was over she pulled Hermione to one side.
“Hermione. Have I done something wrong to Harry and Ron? Why aren’t they talking to me?”
Hermione had already had words with the boys about their behaviour.
“You are not being fair to her. She’s new, it is the first time that she has ever had any friends and she knows nothing of House rivalries. Just because we don’t like Malfoy does not mean that Nina can’t. It’s up to us to keep an eye on her and make sure that he doesn’t hurt her. Not turn our backs on her.” She had scolded them.
But the boys would not listen. They thought that Nina was a traitor and anyone that liked Malfoy could not truly be their friend.
“Don’t worry about it Nina. It’s not you, it’s them, being boys and acting stupid.”
“But why? They wont even look at me.”
“Yes. Well you have not done anything wrong. And if it’s any consolation, I’m not speaking to them.”
Nina did not find any consolation in that but she said nothing. Maybe she could tell Severus tonight. He might be able to tell her what she was doing wrong. But then again maybe not. He didn’t seem to like any of her friends.
She let it go and carried on with her day as best she could.
At dinner the Potions Master told her that he would not be able to meet with her that evening as he had detentions to supervise and a meeting with the Headmaster.
Nina went back to her rooms and spent the evening brooding to herself.
It was Friday before Severus was able to invite her back to his rooms after dinner.
When she got there the Headmaster was with him.
He and Severus were seated on the two armchairs.
Once she was seated on the sofa Albus spoke.
“Ah Nina. How was your week? Have you enjoyed your classes?”
“Yes thank you Sir.”
Actually they had been boring. Every class she had gone to she had discovered that she already knew what everything that the Professors were teaching. But at least she was not on her own.
Albus gave her a knowing smile.
“Severus has told me about your plans for Remus on the next full moon. You wish him to meet you and drink this revised Wolfsbane?””
Nina looked from one to the other.
“Yes Sir.”
“And is Remus agreeable this?”
“No Sir. But he will be there.”
“How do you know.”
“I made him promise.”
A snort from Severus caused her to glare in his direction but she did not meet his eyes.
“But you do not know exactly what the outcome of this meeting will entail. Is that correct?” The Headmaster continued.
Yes Sir.” She studded her fingers as she spoke. ‘They have to let me do this. They have to.’
“And if we refuse?”
“I will have to make it myself and it will be another month before he can take the potion.”
Severus looked at her amazed.
“You believe that you can make the Wolfsbane potion?”
“I can make it Sir. I can make anything that you can make. And more. But if you let me use your equipment it will be easier.”
Severus looked at her incredulously.
“What makes you think that you have the ability to make a potion of that calibre when it has taken me years to attain the level of Master of Potions?”
“Same way as I can do everything else since I came here. How do you think?“ She snapped at him.
Severus narrowed his eyes at her and saw as she put her hands under her bottom protectively and sat on them.
He turned away to hide the faint smirk that twitched at the corners of his mouth.. She had shown him defiance but had soon realised her mistake. She would learn.
Albus interrupted.
Nina. We cannot possibly allow you to meet with Remus under such circumstances. A meeting with Fenrir Greyback could prove fatal. Even to someone with your abilities. Most certainly to Remus. Fenrir is not only a werewolf, he is also a powerful wizard in his own right.”
“Please Sir. I don’t have a choice. I must do this. With or without your help.”
Peering at Severus out of the corner of her eyes she could see that he was not pleased. He agreed with the Headmaster.
As she stared into the fire, Nina told them. “I’m not saying this because I think I’m right and you’re wrong. I didn’t suddenly decide that this was a good idea. I didn’t make this choice for myself. It is what must be. I….I don’t know why. It just is. Please don‘t try to stop me. You have both made your feelings very clear and I do understand. I am not trying to be defiant.“ She looked pleadingly at Severus when she said this. Willing him to understand.
“But I am asking you, both of you, to trust me.”
There was no demand in her voice. No air of superiority. Just a simple plea. Nothing more.
Albus stood. “Perhaps you could order tea for us Nina.” He told her before walking over to the desk with Severus.
Nina watched them as they stood away from her. They were talking quietly so as not to let her overhear.
What they did not realise was that she could hear them clearly. She had decided that she wanted to know what they were going to decide and did not want to wait.
She leaned forward to pour out the tea. There had been no need to summons any. As soon as she reached out her hand to the table it was there, waiting.
“It would seem that we do not have no option Severus. You must adapt the potion as she requests.”
“Albus. We cannot allow this. There must be some way of preventing it. You know what will happen if she comes face to face with Greyback.”
“If she were to be on her own yes.”
“If she….Who?”
“Order members. They can arrive early and be hidden before the moon rises. She will never know unless it is necessary for them to help.”
“What do you mean if??” Severus hissed. “When Greyback attacks her, and he will, her throat will be ripped out before they even know that it has happened.”
Albus turned to study the girl sitting on the sofa for a moment.
“I think maybe not. Make the potion.”
Albus made his way back to his chair and sat down.
Nina watched him as he picked up his cup to take a drink.
“No one else must be there. Only Me and Mr Lupin. No one else at all. You can’t let them.”
The old Headmaster nearly choked on his tea when she said that.
“Severus stalked up to her and leaned his hands on the sofa at either side of her.
She put her hands back under her bottom quickly.
“You are not going out there alone.” He put his mouth next to her ear as he whispered so that only she could hear. “If you try, I will bind you so that you cannot leave. Then you shall be at my mercy.”
He stood back up and went to his seat as Nina stared open mouthed at him.
She had no choice but to agree. For now.
“Alright.” She squeaked.
“Excellent.” The Headmaster told them. He did not know what his Potions Master had said to her but she had agreed to their terms.
“Now. This weekend is a Hogsmead weekend. Perhaps you would like to join your friends for a day out.”
“Really Albus. Do you think that is wise?” Both his eyebrows were raised.
“I do not see why not.”
“Well I can see many reasons why not.” He told him. Scowling.
“What’s a Hogsmead?”
Severus rolled his eyes. “You see my point Headmaster.”
Albus chuckled. “Not what Nina, where. Hogsmead is the only true, all wizarding village in the whole of Britain. You have been there once already when you left the train that brought you to us. The older students are allowed to visit once a month as a treat.”
Nina wasn’t sure if she had any friends left to go with. And if she had, maybe they had already made plans to go with someone else.
“Can I think about it please?”
“Of course. Severus, I believe that you are on Hogsmead duty this weekend are you not.“
“Yes Headmaster.“ He sighed.
“Excellent. Excellent.”
Severus did not see what was excellent about it at all. He hated Hogsmead weekends. Having to keep his eye on a bunch of idiots running amok all over the place was not his idea of excellent.
And if Nina came it would probably be worse. He would have to spend all of his time having to follow her and make sure that she did not end up in trouble. She seemed to attract it like a magnet.
Albus got up to leave.
“I bid you both goodnight. If you decide to go, tell Severus and he will make sure that you are on the list for Mr Filch.”
He stepped through the floo.
Nina realised that she was alone with the Potions Master again.
“I think I should go to bed too.” She said quietly as she gat up and scuttled to the door as quickly. “Goodnight Sir.”
“Goodnight Nina.”
He smirked as he watched her hurry to the door and wrap her fingers around the handle. Even as she did she still had one hand on her bottom.
“Oh and Nina.”
She froze as he stepped toward her, moving silently until he was standing so close to her that she could feel his breath on her. It took a large gulp before she could manage to squeak.
“Yes Sir?”
“Do let me know as soon as possible what your intentions are tomorrow.”
He stood back to allow her to open the door and escape.
“I will Sir.”
“Sleep well little bird.” He whispered when she had gone. Smiling at the way she had covered her backside. He knew she was afraid that he might spank her.
He took the bottle containing Lupin’s whisker through to his private lab.
He was extremely unhappy about Albus allowing this to go ahead. He hoped the Headmaster knew what he was doing. Severus for one intended to be close by her at all times that night.
Nina dashed to her rooms and closed the door before she realised that she still had one hand covering her bum. She removed it quickly and went to her bedroom.
“Hiya Kali.”
“Hello Miss . Is you going to bed now?”
“Kali do you think Hermione will be in bed yet?”
“You want I should find out for you?”
“Yes please. Ask her if I can come and talk to her for a bit.”
Kali popped out. And was back a few minutes later.
“Miss Hermione would like very much for Nina to visit buts she said it is past curfew so yous cant go or you is getting into trouble. I is telling her that is not a problem for you.” Kali grinned at her.
“She is waiting for you Miss.”
Nina smiled back relieved. She thought about Hermione and was standing in front of her friend.
Hermione put her book down and jumped up from her seat in front of the fire in the Griffindor common room.
“Nina. How did you do that?”
“Don’t know. It just kind of happens.” She grinned.
“Show off.“
Nina turned to see Ron walking away from them.
“Ron. Don’t be so mean.” Hermione told him.
He stopped and scowled at them.
Nina stepped over to him.
“Ron? What did I do? I thought we were friends.
”So did I.”
“But now were not? Why? ”
Ron studied her. She didn’t seem to have a clue what was wrong. He wondered if he and Harry had been wrong to turn their backs on her like they had.
Nina turned and walked away from him. Back to Hermione who was scowling furiously at Ron.
“Ignore him Nina. What did you want to see me for?”
“I was going to ask you if you were going to Hogsmead tomorrow. But I don’t know if I’ll be going. Maybe I’ll stay here.”
“Yes I am going and you are not staying here. You are coming with me and Ginny.”
Nina turned and looked at Ron for a moment. He was still watching her with an odd expression on his face.
“It might be better if I didn’t. I don’t want to make things uncomfortable. Anyway, I have a lot to do.”
She didn’t have anything to do really but she felt like she was coming between friends and she didn’t want to do that.
“No you don’t.”
Nina and Hermione turned to Ron again.
“What?” Nina asked.
“You don’t have lots to do tomorrow. Your coming to Hogsmead with us.”
“Really? You mean it. I wont be in the way? But….what about Harry? He might not want me to….”
“Leave Harry to us.” Hermione told her. “Just be ready to go after breakfast.”
She looked at Ron again and he was grinning sheepishly at her.
“Look sit down.” He told her.
Nina sat next to Hermione, waiting as Ron sat opposite.
“We have these things called house rivalries.” He told her.
“Oh?”
“No one told you did they?”
She shook her head.
“Well Griffindor and Slytherin are the biggest rivals.”
Nina waited.
“And us and Malfoy are kind of worst enemies. He would be just as happy to see us dead as we would him. Isn’t that right Hermione?”
Hermione frowned at him.
“I might not like Malfoy Ron but I would not wish to see anyone dead. Well, except You-Know-Who.”
“You-Know-Who?”
“Voldemort.” Hermione told her.
“So, if I’m friends with Draco, that means that you and Harry wont talk to me anymore?”
“No, it doesn’t.” Harry told her form the stairs to the boys dormitories.
He had been waiting for Ron to come and have a game of wizarding chess with him. When he hadn’t shown Harry had headed down to find out what was keeping him when he heard their voices. He had caught most of the conversation and felt guilty.
“You have a right to choose your own friends Nina. Just as we have. We were wrong to push you away. I’m sorry.”
“Me too.” Ron added.
“You are? And….and I can still be friends with Draco?”
“Oh for Merlin’s sake. Ron and Harry. You’ve got her so she doesn’t even know who she can and can’t talk to now. Nina. Who you have as friends is up to you. Not Harry and Ron. Or anyone for that matter. If Draco is nice to you and you are happy being friends with him then it is up to you.”
“Yeah. So long as he doesn’t use her to get at us.”
“Only you would think that Ron.” Hermione told him.
Harry flushed. He had been thinking the same thing as Ron.
“He doesn’t talk to me about any of you. He’s nice to me and he makes me laugh, that’s all.”
“Yeah. Well just be careful round him. That’s all I’m saying. Malfoy’s not nice to anyone unless there’s some thing in it for him.“
“Ronald Weasley. That’s enough. Come on Nina. Leave them to think things over and we‘ll go up to the girls dorm‘s. Boys are not allowed up there.“
Hermione stuck her nose in the air and pulled Nina up a flight of stairs.
When she saw the dormitory she thought it was brilliant. There were five four poster beds in the room, all decked out in maroon and gold.
“You get to share? Wow!”
Hermione laughed. We think you’re lucky because you don’t have to. Only the head boy and girl get their own rooms at Hogwarts. And I don‘t think they are half as nice as yours.”
“Oh. No wonder Ron thinks I‘m a show off. I‘m not you know.”
“We know your not. Ron was just sounding off. He’s hot headed but once he cools of and has time to think he usually comes round. It just takes him a while sometimes. Most times actually.”
They spent the next couple of hours sprawled on Hermione’s bed. Lavender and Parvati joined them about half way through and they told her about life at Hogwarts, how the sorting hat put everyone into their respective houses when they first arrived. Nina discovered that dragons really do exist and they explained quiddich to her.
“Just don’t ever ask Ron or Harry about it though or you’ll never hear the end of it.” Hermione told her laughing.
Kali appeared at the side of the bed.
“It is time you is in bed Miss Nina.”
“Alright Kali.”
“I’ll see you in the morning then.” She said to the others.
“Goodnight Nina.” they all told her.
Lavender and Parvati were astonished when Nina just disappeared on the spot, leaving Hermione to explain what had just happened.
Nina eagerly went to breakfast.
Severus was already there when she arrived.
“Hiya.”
“Good morning.” He groused. He was not a morning person and detested cheerfulness at any time. Mornings he hated it even more.
‘Now what?’ She pondered.
“What’s up?”
“I beg your pardon?”
“What’s the matter?”
“Nothing is the matter except for the fact that I am forced to listen to you when I could be still tucked up in bed asleep.”
“Ahh. You’re a grouch then.”
“I am not a grouch. I just do not happen to like mornings.”
“Okay. I’m going to Hogsmead by the way. With Hermione.”
He continued scowling into his coffee.
“Err. Ron and Harry will be with us too. Just so you know.” She added, trying to gauge his reaction.
“Really. How wonderful for you.“ He replied sarcastically.
“Grouch.” She whispered.
“Do not call me that again. And what exactly are you planning to do once you reach Hogsmead?”
Nina hadn’t thought that far. “I don’t know. What does everyone else do?”
“Make nuisances of themselves mostly. Or spend their time in the Three Broomsticks.”
Nina could vaguely remember seeing an inn by that name before she left the village in search of somewhere to sleep.
“They go to the pub? What’s it like?”
She had never been in a pub before and had no idea what to expect.
“Noisy. You should fit in well.”
“Thanks a lot.”
Then her face dropped. She may not have been in a public house before but she did know that you needed money if you were in one. And Nina didn’t have so much as a brass farthing. Now that she came to think about it, her friends would probably be going into the shops too.
“Actually I don’t feel very well. I….I don’t think I should go. I’ll go have a lie down instead. That’s a better idea isn’t it?”
She got out of her seat to leave.
Severus had watched her go from excited to suddenly being apprehensive. He knew she was lying about feeling unwell.
“Sit down.” He told her. “Now tell me the truth. Why have you suddenly changed your mind?”
She lowered herself back into her seat and avoided his eyes.
“I told you. I don’t feel well.”
“And I told you not to lie to me again. Come with me.”
Nina meekly followed him until they reached his office.
“Why are we going in there? I haven’t done anything wrong.”
He closed the door and ushered her to the chair in front of his desk as he perched himself on the edge of his desk in front of her, his arms folded.
“Now. The truth.”
‘I can’t tell him the truth.’ “I have stomach ache.” She told him.
Severus went round to the back of his desk and pulled open a drawer. He took out a small phial and handed it to her.
“Healing potion. Drink it.”
Nina put it to her mouth and drank.
“Better?”
She nodded.
“So you are well enough to go then.”
She shook her head.
“Why not?”
“I cant go.” She told him reluctantly. She felt embarrassed and ashamed.
“Why can you not go?”
“I can’t. I just can’t.” She jumped out of the chair as the tears flooded her eyes and she ran for the door.
She was fast, but Severus was faster.
He was standing in front of the door as she reached it.
“You will tell me why you have suddenly changed your mind. You were excited when you came to breakfast this morning. Now you are making excuses not to go. Now. The truth.”
Nina hung her head.
“I didn’t get chance to find work when I got here and I haven’t got any money.” She felt totally humiliated.
He could see the bright red spots on her cheeks when she admitted that she was penniless. He and Albus should have thought about this. He walked back to his desk and took something out. He returned to her and thrust it toward her.
“Here.”
Nina looked at the bag. “What is it?”
“It is coin.”
“What?”
“Money. So that you can join your friends.”
Nina turned to leave again. “No thank you.” She told him quietly.
Severus was stunned. She seemed to be angry.
“What do you mean, no? If money is your only obstacle to having a day out with your friends, here I am offering it to you.”
“I don’t want it.” She hissed.
He could not understand what on earth was wrong with her.
He grabbed her arm to prevent her from leaving and placed his other hand on top of her head. He did not like what he saw.
Nina was at what she thought of as the secret place. The monster she had thought of as her uncle was preparing to leave. The other men were tossing money at her and her uncle was making her crawl around the floor to pick it up. For services rendered he told her, grinning as the others laughed. He would take it from her once she had collected it all.
He removed his hand. He understood now.
He walked to the sofa, taking her with him and sat her down before seating himself next to her.
He pressed the bag of coins into her hand.
Nina looked at it horrified before turning the same gaze to him.
She was trembling, afraid now of what he would expect her to do.
“No Nina. I do not want anything from you. I have already told you that I would never harm you. I would certainly not force you to do anything like that against your will.”
“You hit me before.”
“No. I spanked you to teach you a lesson. It is different. This money is not payment for anything that you have or may do in the future. It is….a gesture. Of friendship.”
Nina studied the bag for a few minutes.
“But I can’t pay you back. I haven’t got a job.“
“I do not want you to pay me back. Now, I do not wish to hear you speak of it again. Go on. Go and find your friends. They will probably be worried that I have clapped you in irons or something.”
She looked at the bag again. It would be nice to go to the village. And she would be able to pay her way too. She had never had money for herself before. Not to spend as she wished. Looking back at Severus she told him. “Thank you. Thank you so much.“
She flung her arms around his neck and hugged him for a minute before letting go.
“Go.” He told her gruffly and watched her run out of the door to find the others.
He ran his finger around the inside of his collar before he stood to get his cloak.
“That was very, charitable of you Severus.”
“Albus.” The Potions Master had been startled. “How long have you been there?”
“Long enough Severus.” He told him as his blue eyes twinkled over the top of his glasses.
Nina ran up the steps from the dungeons. She had been to her rooms and grabbed a cloak from Kali who had been standing just inside the door holding it ready for her.
“Thanks Kali.”
“Have fun Miss.” The little elf called as she smiled at Nina running off to fin her friends.
As she got to the main entrance there was a crowd of students waiting to go passed Mr Filch. She was looking for Hermione when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
”Hello Sweetness.” A voice said softly in her ear.
He had seen her ahead of him as she left her rooms. He did not call out to her then because he was enjoying the view she afforded him from the back. He thought she was beautiful from both ends. He had thought of asking her to accompany to Hogsmead this weekend but had changed his mind when his father had written and told him that he would meet him there. He did not want his father to meet Nina.
Only one person called her that.
“Draco. Are you going to Hogsmead too? The Headmaster said I can go. I’m just waiting for Hermione.”
“Then hopefully I may see you there then. Enjoy yourself.”
He told her smoothly. But not while his father was around he hoped.
“Oh I hope so. Maybe I can buy you a drink. Bye.”
“Nina. Nina.”
Nina turned to see Hermione, Harry, Ron and Ginny waving to her from outside. She waved back and waited her turn to see Mr Filch.
“Name.” He asked her gruffly as he did with all the students.
“Nina Manohel.” She told him.
“Filch looked down his list.
“Your names not down. You cant go.”
“But…”
“If your names not on my list you have to stay here. Now clear off and let rest of them through.
“Yes Sir.”
Nina backed away. She wasn’t sure what to do now. Looking on for a while as the line of students dwindled she turned and shouted Hermione over.
“I can’t go. You lot go on and I’ll see you later.” Nina tried her best not to look disappointed.
“Well we’ll stay then.”
“No you won’t. Get going. Tell me about it when you get back. Go on.” I’m fine she told her smiling.
Hermione hesitated for a moment. She felt bad for Nina. But she needed some more parchment and ink so she had to go.
“I’ll see you later then. Is there anything you would like me to bring back for you?”
“No thanks. I’m fine.” Nina told her.
When Hermione had gone she let her smile drop and headed back to her rooms.
Just as she was passing the potions office Severus and Albus exited. Both looked surprised to see her back in the dungeons.
“Nina. Why I thought that you were heading out with your friends today?”
“I can’t go Headmaster.” She told him.
Severus looked sharply at her.
“I thought we had discussed this. You said that you wanted to go.”
“I do, I did. But I can’t because I’m”
“I suppose that you are feeling unwell. Again. What is it this time? A Headache?”
“No Sir.” She told him blushing. It’s just that I’m not allowed because I’m not on Mr Filch’s list. He told me only those on it can go.” She held out the bag of money to Severus.
“Severus, did you not inform Mr Filch that Nina would be going today?”
Severus had forgotten all about adding her name to the list. He had taken the girl straight to his office after breakfast and speaking to Argus Filch had completely slipped his mind.
“No Headmaster I did not. I am afraid I forgot.”
“Then we had best amend that now.” Albus smiled.
“It’s alright Sir. Everyone’s gone now anyway.”
“I am certain that Professor Snape would not object to accompanying you there. Since he is going anyway.”
Albus went to see Filch and Nina was left looking at the Potions Master.
“Is it okay if I walk with you. I’ll get out off your way as soon as we get there.”
“I would welcome your company.” He purred at her. “Particularly as it was my fault that you were delayed.”
When he spoke Nina’s tummy did a flip. It was deep and….well she didn’t know the right word but it sure was yummy. ‘Blast it I’m blushing again.’
He noticed. He held out his arm to her.
“Shall we?” He could not resist using the same tone when he spoke to her. Smiling to himself as he saw her blush even deeper as she took his arm and avoided his gaze.
Severus knew very well what he was doing to her. And as much as Nina hated herself for blushing so much, Severus loved it.
They headed for the main entrance to find Mr Filch waiting for them.
“Professor Snape. The Headmasters just explained things to me. You’ll be taking the young lady then?”
“I shall Mr Filch. God day.”
“Bye.” Nina said to the caretaker.
Argus looked at her shrewdly. But as she smiled at him genuinely he felt quite pleased. “Good bye dear.” He said to her. Wondering why he was suddenly feeling happy. Argus Filch did not do happy.
Severus began to laugh as they approached the gates.
“What are you laughing at?” She asked him.
“You. How do you do it?”
“Pardon?” Now she was puzzled.
“No one makes Argus Filch smile. You have just made him look as if he is about to burst into song.”
“Me. What did I do?”
“You treated him with respect and kindness. Something I am afraid he does not get much off.”
“But why? He seems okay to me.”
“Like me, he is very strict and will broach no nonsense or rule breaking. That makes us both very unpopular.”
“Well that’s fair enough. It’s your jobs I suppose. Anyway he can’t be too bad.”
“And why is that?”
“Well he loves that cat of his to bit’s. And she’s never far away from him so she must love him. And animals know when someone genuinely likes them. They won’t come anywhere near you if your not nice inside.”
“Very astute Miss Manohel.”
“Nina”
“Nina then. But only until we reach our destination.”
He had purred again when he spoke. Just to see if her reaction would be the same as earlier. It was and Severus was delighted. He continued with the same voice.
“It is not very often that I am honoured a stroll with such a beautiful companion.”
“Ee….yo… .woo….ahh”
‘Blast it I cant say a single full word.’
“He let out a deep loud baritone laugh.
She was mortified and felt that she was redder than a boiled beetroot.
“I shall have to remember the effect that my voice can have on you.”
Nina didn’t even try to speak. Instead she pouted and kept her eyes on the road in front. Fuming now that she knew he had done it on purpose. And embarrassed because he knew what effect he was having on her.
They continued on down the road. Nina not saying a word and Severus letting out the occasional guffaw that he could not control.
She was relieved when they finally arrived at Hogs mead and she let out a sigh of relief.
Going back to his normal schoolteachers voice he spoke.
“Once we have found your friends I shall leave you. Did they say where they would be?“
Nina shook her head.
“Well that is helpful. Come on.”
They walked around for a short while and Nina spotted Harry and Ron in a shop with a broomstick and some strange looking clothes in the window.
“There they are.”
Nina had spotted Ron’s red hair in a shop across the street to where they were standing.
They walked across to the store and Nina tapped on the window to get Ron’s attention. She could see Harry too.
Ron turned, peered out at her and gave her a quick smile and a wave before turning his attention back to whatever he had been doing.
“I’m fine now. I can wait out here for them.”
“Miss Manohel. This is a Quiddich supplies shop. They shall not be leaving it for some time. We should find Miss Granger.”
At a table in a shadowed area at the back of the Three Broomsticks, Draco was with his father, Lucius Malfoy.
Icy grey eyes met likewise as they discussed Nina
Draco was trying to reveal as little as possible about her. He did not know why the Dark Lord was so interested in her but it could not be to her advantage, that was certain.
Lucius knew his son well. He knew that he was holding back information.
“You are keeping something back Draco and it displeases me.” He told him coldly. “You will tell me everything that you have learned.”
Draco was afraid of his father but he wanted to protect Nina as well. He hesitated.
“Perhaps you would prefer to explain to our Lord why you are holding back information that ‘He’ has specifically said that you were to obtain.”
Draco gulped.
“I have told you all that I know father. I have made only a little headway in befriending her. She is always in the company of Professor Snape or that Mudblood Granger.”
“Not according to Parkinson and Bullistrode. Apparently their daughters are at present suspended due to a little disagreement over the chit being a little too friendly with you.”
Draco gulped. “Pansy was only jealous because Nina happened to take the vacant seat beside me in class. Nothing more father. Pansy as usual thought that she should have been the one to sit with me. You know that she believes that she has sole rights to me.”
Lucius studied his son for a moment.
“Very well. I shall accept that. For now. Walk with me. I have some purchases to make.”
Draco followed his father out of the Three broomsticks, hoping that his father would not ask any more about Nina.
His father was leading him in the direction of ‘Monsieur Naturalle’s. A very expensive high class tailors.
“Draco.”
Draco turned. He knew who had called him the moment he heard her voice.
Severus was incensed when Nina suddenly called out Draco’s name. He had not noticed the Malfoy’s up ahead. He was not expecting to meet Lucius in Hogsmead.
Malfoy senior had also turned from his mission at the sound of his sons name been called.
Nina ran up to Draco. “Hi. I’m looking for Hermione. I don’t suppose you’ve seen her.”
“No. I have not.” Draco told her coldly.
Nina looked at him. “What’s wrong? Why are you talking to me like that?
Lucius peered down his nose at the young woman in front of him. She was certainly beautiful. And elegantly dressed too. He wondered if this was the woman that the Dark Lord was so interested in.
“Draco.” His father interrupted. “Perhaps you should introduce me to the young lady.”
Severus came to stand beside Nina.
Lucius. I was not aware that you were venturing into Hogsmead today. You should have informed me. I would have come sooner. Perhaps you would prefer to join me for a drink. Allow the young people go and browse the stores.”
He wanted to get the elder Malfoy away from Nina as quickly as possible.
But Lucius was more astute than that.
“Not at all Severus. I would be delighted to make the acquaintance of the young lady here.”
Nina looked from Severus to Draco to Lucius.
“Hello.” She put in before anyone could react and held out her hand to shake his.
Lucius’ eyes swept over her. ‘Yes. She is certainly delicious.’
I am pleased to make your acquaintance Miss…?”
“Nina. My name’s Nina.” She told him with a smile.
Draco stepped in reluctantly.
“Father. Allow me to introduce Miss Nina Manohel.”
Severus stiffened as Lucius narrowed his eyes at Nina.
The elder Malfoy took her proffered hand in his and turned it and he brought it to his mouth. He felt her resist as she realised what he was about to do but he tightened his own hold gently so that she could not pull away.
Nina watched aghast as the man put her hand to his lips and kissed it. Slowly. She tried to politely pull away again but he held onto her and ran his tongue along the back of her hand before he released it.
‘YUCK’ She thought before looking to Severus. Trying to see what kind of reaction he would have to this man kissing her hand.
’Urgh he licked my hand’ she thought disgustedly as she put her hand behind her back and tried to wipe of the lick on the back of her jacket.
Severus kept his expression neutral but Nina had noticed a flash of anger in his eyes when he had looked at her.
‘That’s not fair’ she thought. ‘I didn’t want him to kiss my hand and I certainly didn’t want him to lick it.’
Draco continued the introduction. He had not like the way his father had greeted Nina but he was not in a position to do anything about it.
“Nina. This is my father, Lord Malfoy.”
Nina mumbled something that no one could hear and looked at Draco. She was pouting.
Severus was livid. He knew that Nina had only offered her hand to Lucius to shake in a friendly gesture. As yet she had not met the likes of Lucius Malfoy.
“I would be most honoured Miss Manohel if you were to join me for lunch at the Three Broomstick in, shall we say and hour. I would enjoy having the opportunity to get to know you. My son has had only praise when he has spoken of you.”
Nina was panicked now. She didn’t want to meet Draco’s dad at any time. She turned to Severus, hoping that he would think of some excuse.
