Chapter 23 I Am a Gentleman
Severus was at his wits’ end, neither knew that the other was sitting on the floor at the other side of the door. Severus wondering what he had done wrong, while desperately needing to speak to her. Sky thinking he hated her for being who she was; feeling desperately lost without him and not knowing what to do.
When Albus appeared in the dungeons at seven o’clock that evening to find his Potions Master sitting on the floor, his back to the lab door and his head in his hands he was shocked to say the least.
“Severus, my boy, what on earth has happened?”
“She’s gone, Albus. She left me and I have no idea why.”
“Gone where, Severus? What happened?”
The Headmaster was appalled at the turn of events. Seeing his Potions Master this way almost broke his heart, especially after seeing such a change in him since Sky agreed to live with him. The man was besotted with her, and he was the only one Sky truly trusted. She was just as smitten with Severus. What on earth could have happened to cause this?
“Severus, tell me what happened, maybe I can help.”
An anguished sob tore from Severus throat before he could stop it. “She’s left me Albus. She’s gone back in that fucking wall and I can’t get to her.”
“Severus, calm yourself. All is not lost.”
Severus looked up at him, his eyes red rimmed and hard. “Don’t you dare to tell me that Albus! Don’t you dare!” He spat. “She told me who her father is and went through that door. I have no way of getting to her and no way of finding out why. So don’t you fucking dare to tell me to calm down.”
“There is a way to contact her, Severus. I have only recently discovered the elves have access to the wall.”
Severus’ expression turned to one of hope. “Of course. Why the hell did I not think of that? Shannon has already been in there.”
Getting to his feet Severus called for Kali. The elf appeared instantly.
“Sir is calling for Kali. Can I gets you something Sir?”
“Yes Kali, you can get me inside that damn wall. Sky is in there and I cannot get in.”
“Kali not allowed to do that Sir. Only if Miss tells me.”
The elf could see the despair in the Potion Master’s eyes. She knew he loved her mistress and wanted to help him. “But Kali can speak to the Miss. I can tells her you wants to speak to her. You want Kali should do that?”
“Yes. Tell her I need to see her. Tell her I am not angry with her. I never was. Ask her why she ran off, Kali, and hurry.”
“Oh Miss, why is you crying?”
Sky looked up to see Effy standing in front of her. “Go away Effy. Leave me alone.”
Effy was in a quandary. Elves were bound to obey orders and Sky was her mistress, the one she was bound to. But the Snape had given her an order too. Effy figured that since he was the Miss’ mate, that she must obey him too. “The Snape is sending me to fetch you, Miss. He is very upset that you is running away from him.”
“I’m sure he is Effy. He didn’t get a chance to shout at me and tell me how loathsome I am. Tell him to go to hell.”
“The Snape is not feeling like that. The Snape is loving yous and wanting you back. He is sending me to tell you he is not being angry with you.”
“I don’t care what he told you, Effy. You didn’t see the hatred in his eyes, the disgust on his face when I told him who my father is. He looked like he wanted to murder me.”
“Not you Miss, the Dark one, that is who he is hating. For what he did to yous. The Snape is not hating you. He is loving you very much. His face is puffy and his eyes is red. Please talk to him Miss. Let him tells you what he feels.”
“What if you’re wrong Effy? What if it’s a trick?”
“Is not trick and Effy is not wrong. You needs him and he is needing you. Use the mirror then you is seeing him.”
Sky looked at Effy for a moment. Why hadn’t she thought of that?
Getting up she made her way to the mirror and withdrew her wand.
Severus was sitting on the sofa, his head in his hands as the Headmaster tried to soothe him, telling him to wait and see what the elf had to say on her return. A pot of tea and two cups lay on the table between them. The Headmasters’ cup was empty while Severus’ was still full, the tea cold inside, a skin formed on the top.
The Potion Master lifted his face from his hands to look at Albus.
“What if she won’t come back to me Albus? I have never felt about any woman the way I feel about her. Why did she go?”
Sky turned away from the mirror. She’d heard what he said, but then why had he looked at her the way he did? The hatred in his eyes was unmistakable. She looked back at the mirror to see Albus leaving the room. Severus was alone and his face was once more buried in his hands. It tore her apart to see him like that. She walked over to the door and grasped the handle. Turning it slowly she pulled it open a little and peered inside.
Severus heard the slight click of the latch and his head whipped round to see her peering through at him.
“Sky, please, why did you go?” He croaked as he stood and almost stumbled towards her.
She stepped back, alarmed at how quickly he moved and unsure again as to how he would react. She was about to close the door again but Severus put his foot in the doorway to stop her. He stepped through and grabbed her by the shoulders.
“Don’t you dare.” He growled at her. “Why the hell did you run off like that? I thought you were gone for good. I thought … Gods Sky why?”
He shook her as he spoke, trying to control himself and not succeeding.
Her head bounced back and forth, her eyes widening with fright.
“Severus please. I was scared. You looked so …”
He stopped shaking her, realising that his anger was what she was running from. “I’m sorry.” He choked pulling her into his arms. “Why did you go?”
“I saw the look in your eyes, Severus: the hatred, the disgust for me when I told you who my father is. I couldn’t bare that look, I didn’t know what you were going to do, so I ran.”
“You silly foolish woman. My hatred was not for you. It was for him, Voldemort, for what he did. Sky, you have to learn to trust me. Give me a chance to prove to you that I … I love you.” ‘Gods I’ve said it. I cannot believe I said those words.’ But Severus knew that although he did not mean to say them, he did love her, with every fibre of his being.
“I’ll try. I promise I will. But it’s not easy for me Severus. I’ve never … did you just say you love me?”
“I did. And soon I shall have the whole summer to show you how just much I love you. I hope you feel the same way.”
“I think I do, but I’m not sure. I don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like, to love someone.”
“Then I will have to teach you. Come back with me. We can have dinner and I shall give you your first lesson tonight.”
She felt the familiar tingle at his words but wasn’t too keen on going to the Great Hall again. Not after what happened at lunchtime.
“Do we have to go to dinner? Can’t we eat here?”
“I am afraid not. It is expected that all faculty attend the evening meal. If we do not make an appearance, the Headmaster will be back here looking for me.”
“Well at least let me get cleaned up. I must look a sight.”
“No more than I do. You have fifteen minutes while I go and take a shower.”
She rushed into the wall bathroom, leaving the door to Severus’ study open so he knew she wasn’t hiding from him. Twenty five minutes later, she walked into her living room to find Severus pacing back and forth while he waited for her.
“I said fifteen minutes. You have taken almost twice that.” Then he turned and looked at what she was wearing. “Though I think perhaps it was worth the wait.”
When Sky got out of the bath and dried herself, she entered the bedroom to find Effy waiting for her. “I is got your clothes for you. You is going to look nice for the Snape tonight. Effy has brunged you a lovely gown. You is always in these jeans and t shirts. Tonight you wear nice things.”
Sky looked to the gown on the bed but before she had chance to examine it, Effy snapped her fingers and Sky was dressed. The gown reached almost to the floor. It was close fitting down to her hip before flaring out in soft folds to the tips of her shoes. The gown was a rich deep green with a modest neckline, long sleeves and a silver belt that hung loosely around the waist. Her shoes were of the same green with small silver heels that click clacked when she walked. She liked the sound they made. Effy snapped her fingers again and Sky’s hair was hanging down her back in a long pony tail fastened with a silver ribbon.
“You is looking beautiful Miss. The Snape will feel very amorous when he sees you.”
Sky turned pink. She didn’t even think to look at herself in the mirror so did not see what Severus saw when he laid his eyes on her.
To him, she looked like an angel; a very Slytherin angel at that. The gown she wore hugged her figure and showed off every luscious curve, every swell of her breasts and buttocks, the sweep of her hips and her tiny waist.
“I thought you did not wish to be noticed. You will turn every head in the school tonight.”
His voice was husky with need as he spoke. As lovely as the dress was, he wanted to tear it from her body and take her right here on the carpet.
He cleared his throat and held out his arm, trembling with the effort it took not to ravish her.
Sky felt a bit uncomfortable when he said everyone would notice her. She had no idea how she looked. Effy dressed her before she could do or say anything. Well it was too late now, she would just have to brave the looks. Sky decided there and then that she was fed up of shying away from everyone and everything. From now on, she was going to be brave. She lifted her chin and put her arm in his.
Severus closed the door behind them and they walked through the study and into the dungeon corridor. The Slytherin students were just on their way from the common room, when they saw Sky they stopped to ogle her. The students at the back pushed to see what the hold up was.
Severus scowled at them before leading Sky along the corridor, secretly seething because he knew that the eyes of the male students behind them would be on the sway of Sky’s hips and bottom. Maybe he should have told her to go and change. But as they entered the main hall, Severus felt proud to have such a beautiful young woman on his arm.
Sky on the other hand was losing her new found determination and was not enjoying the stares of the male students, which seem to be all aimed in her direction.
“Severus.” She whispered. “Maybe I should go back and get changed.”
“You shall do no such thing. You look like a true Slytherin tonight. You are on the arm of the Slytherin Head and you shall hold your head up proudly. Is that clear?”
She looked at him and saw a glint of mischief in his eyes along with something else she couldn’t fathom. Leaning down so his lips were close to her ear he told her.
“What you see in my eyes is pride, Sky, pride at having you by my side. No matter what you wear, or don’t wear.” He added as they reached the doors to the Great Hall.
Instead of the usual brisk stride that caused his cape to billow, Severus walked at a steady pace down the length of the hall, his head held high as he led Sky to the high table. He wanted everyone in here to witness that Sky was with him; that she was his and no one else’s. The hall was quiet as he walked her round the table and pulled out the chair, letting her sit and pushing it in for her. He passed her a napkin and took his own seat beside her. Sky was blushing furiously at the attention, both from Severus and from the stares she was getting. She was trying her best to pretend that this was all perfectly normal, but still could not prevent the colour from rising to her cheeks.
She hated the fact that she was red, while Severus thought it was most becoming. He was so taken up with her at the moment, as well as feeling relieved that she had not left him for good, that he even forgot to give his customary glare across the student body. All through dinner he was attentive to her. The rest of the staff looked on in amazement as the Potions Master ignored everyone but Sky.
When Albus saw him lead her into the hall, the old man’s bright blue eyes twinkled with joy. He warned the rest of the staff to leave them alone and not interrupt the couple. The staff could tease something terrible when they had a mind. This galled Minerva somewhat but she kept quiet, her lips drawn into a thin line. She really wanted to know more about Sky and what was going on between her and Severus. As soon as dinner was over; Severus stood and made to take hold of the back of Sky’s chair when the Headmaster spoke to him.
“Severus, would now be a good time to renew our previous appointment?” Albus phrased his words as a request, but the Potions Master knew that it was not.
He sighed. “Yes Albus. It would be a good time.”
“Wonderful. I shall be with you shortly.”
Severus gave a slight bow and returned to Sky, helped her from her chair and led her from the hall. As soon as they were through the doors and out of earshot of everybody, Sky turned to him.
“Severus, I’m, quite capable of getting in and out of a chair by myself you know. And picking up my own napkin.”
He chuckled at her indignation. “I know you are. But it is the gentlemanly thing to do to help a lady into her seat. I am a gentleman.”
“Oh. I didn’t know.”
“What, that I am a gentleman?”
Sky laughed this time when he gave her an affronted look. “No. That that’s what you’re supposed to do. I’m still getting used to holding your arm everywhere we go.”
He smiled down at her. “Well get used to it. I enjoy treating you like a lady because that is what you are.”
She snorted. “I don’t think so.”
“Something else I shall have to teach you. Though I would prefer you stay as yourself when we are in the bedroom. I like the little hellcat you become then.”
She froze when he said that and he laughed and left her standing as he dashed to their rooms before she found her feet and let fly at him. Luckily for Severus, the Headmaster caught her up just as she was about to hike up her dress and run after him.
“Ah, hello Sky. I was just on my way to see you. Would you do me the honour of taking my arm for the rest of the journey?”
She was flummoxed at the Headmaster’s sudden appearance and didn’t think to ask why he was heading for the dungeons.
“Erm yeah. Okay.”
She slipped her arm in his and they made their way to Severus’ study.
After their little spat in the main hall, Severus forgot all about Albus’ request. He already removed his outer robes, jacket and shoes.
When Sky and Albus walked in, he was standing in his shirt and trousers but nothing else. His pants were seriously tented and his jaw dropped a mile when he saw them. Sky cheeks pinked as her eyes went straight to the bulge in his trousers. She couldn’t keep the smile from spreading across her face. Albus however pretended not to notice as he led Sky to the sofa and waited for her to sit before taking the armchair.
Severus scowled and turned to walk to the bedroom. “I was about to get
changed, Headmaster. I shall only be a minute”
He stormed off and closed the door loudly, mumbling to himself as he went. Sky caught the Headmaster’s eye and he could not help the chuckle he let out as Sky started to giggle.
Two minutes later, Severus re-entered the room dressed in his usual severe robes, a black look on his face but the tent now gone from his trousers. He pulled a bottle of whisky from his liquor cabinet along with three glasses and placed them on the coffee table before sitting down on the sofa next to Sky. He needed a drink badly. How the hell could he have forgotten Albus was coming? While Severus redressed, Albus told Sky why he was here. She agreed to let him into the wall while apologising for not being here to admit him earlier.
“Think nothing of it.” He told her. “I am just happy that you have both settled your differences. Severus cares for you very much. He was heartbroken at the thought of losing you.”
“I know, but it won’t happen again.”
That was when Severus entered the room and they ended the conversation.
“Drink anyone?”
Without waiting for an answer, Severus poured three generous glasses of whisky and downed his own in one go. Albus followed suit with his own as Sky watched them. When the glasses were refilled, they drank these a bit more slowly. Picking up her own she brought it to her nose and took a sniff.
“Urgh. What is it?”
“Whiskey, have you not tried it before?”
“No, and it smells like one of your potions.” She told him wrinkling her nose.
Albus chuckled. “It is an acquired taste. Best to drink it down in one go.”
Severus’ eyebrows shot up and just as he was about to protest and tell her not to drink like that, she raised the glass to her lips and swallowed the whiskey down in one go. Severus watched amazed as she calmly put her glass on the table. Then she turned a peculiar shade of green and started to choke as the whisky started to burn her throat.
“Bloody hell.”
Severus roared as he jumped up, grabbed her and ran through to the bathroom with her. Her eyes were streaming, her throat felt like it was on fire and she wanted to be sick. Just in time, Severus got her to the toilet before she was sick. Sky thought she was going to die and Severus gipped as she wretched. He never could stand by when someone was throwing up. He kept flushing the toilet, trying to help get rid of the smell and cursing Albus all the time. He wetted a towel and tried to wipe her face but she snatched it from him and pushed him away. He retrieved a stomach settling potion from the cabinet and placed it in her hand, called for Effy then left her alone to sort herself out. His own pallor was grey when he walked into the study.
“Oh Severus. Is she alright?”
“She will be. I left her a stomach potion and Effy is with her. She does not want me near her at the moment and I am not about to argue with her. Why the hell did you tell her to drink it down like that?”
“It is usually the best way when new to whiskey. I did not expect her to be sick. Besides, you poured it for her in the first place.”
“Yes, well, I shall not be pouring her another. Not if it has this effect on her.”
“Well it is done now so there is no point in us getting into a spat about it. Do you think she will be long?”
Severus glared at Albus. “How would I know? You know I do not deal well with vomiting. I try to keep clear when someone is physically ill like that.”
“We’d best just wait until she comes back then. Shall we have another?”
So the two men sat nursing their drinks while a distressed Effy tended to her mistress, who was still convinced she was dying.
