Chapter 23
They dined together more frequently as the weeks passed. Severus would always enquire beforehand what she was planning for the evening meal, so long as hedgehog was not on the menu he was happy to eat what she offered, otherwise he would pre-order from the elves and take the food down to her little camp.
It was mid December and the snows were here. Paula had packed up the tsera and was now using the wagon. She had extended it, as she told him was possible, and he was amazed to find it not only doubled in size outside, but doubled again on the inside.
“Kak did this not long after he first found me. He wanted a bit more space when he stayed with me. I liked what he did and kept the charms.”
“You and the Headmaster shared the wagon, for how long?”
“No Severus, kak used the vurdon, I slept in the tsera. Usually he would stay with me for a few weeks. Occasionally he would visit during the snows and then we would have to share the vurdon, but as I have told you before, he is familia to me. A favourite uncle, extended family. There was no ignominy in sharing the sleeping accommodations.”
He did like how cosy the place was, with the stove lit and the firm cushioned seats. He was surprised to discover that Paula did not possess a single book. “Do you not enjoy reading?”
“Romany do not send their children to school Severus. What we learn we learn from our elders. Kak has taught me enough that I can chit and chet a little. Give me a lil and I am lost.” She told him matter of factly.
“Chit and chet? Lil?”
“Read, write and book Severus.”
Severus was appalled that a woman of twenty-nine was illiterate. “But that is preposterous; every child should be at least taught the basics of reading, writing and maths.”
“What use would it do the like of the Romanies who live off their wits, trade in horses and tell fortunes. We learn what we need to learn and nothing more. Survival is the way of a Romany Severus, the lore of our people is passed down to us by word of mouth as paramecia, Gypsy fairytales, on our mama‘s knee, or listening to the diwano, the elders.”
But the essays, the marking, I have seen the piles of essays you have on your table. How do you know what the students write?”
“Ah, that is where magic comes in. A simple charm that will chit to me, all I need do is add my comments, I am quite capable of that. The main thing is the children learn to defend themselves and others. You should sit in on one of my classes sometime, I think you will be impressed by what you see. Kak certainly is, and Professor Flitwick tells me the students have improved greatly in charms also. The students have confidence in themselves, they have learned to trust one another in the face of a common enemy, usually me.”
“You?”
“Of course me, someone has to rile them enough to muster the emotion behind some of the more darker spells Severus. They cannot duel with leg locker curses, tickling charms and jelly leg jinx’s. The sixth and seventh years can now control another’s patronus and send it back. Soon they will learn to divert the imperio, then use it to control the patronus, make it turn on it’s caster.”
“You can …do all of those things yourself?”
“Yes, why?” She asked, puzzled at his seeming astonishment.
“Show me.” He demanded. “I shall cast a patronus and you will return it to my wand.”
“Fine, but outside, I don’t know what your patronus is, but I do not want it charging about in here.”
The stepped out of the wagon and moved into the forest a little ways. “Go on then, cast it.”
“Expecto Patronum!” Severus shouted, sending a brilliant white doe in her direction.
Paula raised her hands, holding them in front of her, fingers pointing at the doe.
Suddenly it did the same as Harry’s stag the first day he ever took her class. It stopped in front of her and knelt down. She stroked it a couple of times then pointed at Severus.
He was shaken when it stood, turned and charged at him. He was about to blast his own patronus when it suddenly dissolved into a thin stream of light and flew back into his wand. “But that is impossible, no one I know of can do that to another persons patronus.”
“Apart from me and the sixth and seventh year students. It seems the current students are not the only ones lacking proper defence education Severus.” She told him with a smirk.
His face, his whole demeanour darkened. “I can assure you I am not lacking in any aspect of the magical spectrum, apart from maybe that one spell. I knew more about the dark arts at the age of eleven than many Ministry aurors know now.”
“Severus I was only teasing you.” She said, feeling his indignation and anger. The dark countenance on his face giving him the air of one thoroughly pissed wizard. “I should not have said what I did. I am sorry.”
His face softened a bit when she apologised, he actually felt a bit uncomfortable when she lowered her eyes to the ground, as if in supplication to him. Taking a step closer he raised a hand and lifted her chin. “I am the one who should be apologising. It was simply a matter of pride. Though I will deny that if you ever mention it to anyone.”
Paula looked at him and felt his remorse. “Never the less, I was wrong to ridicule you. Especially since …I should not have done so. Would you like to learn the spell. Can you control the Imperio? I can teach you that also.” She said, hoping to divert him from her unfinished sentence.”
“Yes you can teach me. It would not do to have the students able to do something I cannot. Especially since what?” He asked.
‘Blast.’ She thought. “Cast your patronus again, then hit me with the imperio.” She said, ignoring his question.
Severus decided to drop the question for the time being and did as she asked. He was amazed when she sent his patronus bounding through the trees, only to return and lay by his feet.
“You can do all this, and without a wand or verbal instruction. It is amazing.”
For the next few of hours, she taught him how to first control her own patronus, which was an impressive looking white steed, then how to accept the imperio willingly, basically inviting it into his psyche and controlling it, redirecting it to her patronus. Once he got the hang of that he was able to make the steed do most anything he wanted it to do. “I have to admit, I am more than impressed with your defence abilities. I did not realise any of this was even possible. I have never read about it in any book, where did you learn to do this?”
“Again I am sorry Severus, it is not something I can tell you at this moment.”
“Then perhaps you can tell me why after almost four hours, I am exhausted and my magical powers almost depleted for the moment, while you are still fine? Why everyone but you needs a wand to cast anything more than a simple lumos or ventus (wind) spell?”
“I cannot …”
“I know, you do not need to say it again.” He said with a sigh. “You could make us a pot of tea though.” He put in hopefully.
She chuckled.” I can do that, and buns. Hagrid brought me a tin of rock cakes, we can fill up on those until supper time.”
He smiled broadly as he followed her out of the trees. There was no way he would try and put his teeth into one of those.
