LEECH
Chapter 23
Exclamations of shock rippled round the room, and Severus held his council until they quieted again.
Minerva turned to the Headmaster. “Albus, you have kept a young woman here under our noses and said nothing. How could you?”
Before he could reply Severus spoke again.
“She is of no danger to any of you, since her arrival Albus and I have taught her how to control her ability. She has proved to be a most apt pupil. She also wears magical gloves that further prevent the possibility of her using that ability to drain power from anyone. Although the young lady did not know she was a Leech until we informed her, she has led for the most part a very lonely, solitary life because of it. She herself hated the reaction she caused in others, even though she didn’t know why it happened. It would be extremely cruel of you to treat her as though she were any less of a human being because of it.”
“And you’d know all about how to treat people without cruelty wouldn’t you Snivellus.”
“Sirius, enough.” The Headmaster barked at him. “Severus has done more for Kathy than ever he was asked to do. Without his help it would not have been possible to bring her to where she is. He worked endless hours to come up with the spelled and potioned gloves that would enable her to have physical contact with another human being without any adverse effects. Can you imagine what it must have been like for her, growing up, never having anyone willing to lay a hand on her, let alone comfort her if she was hurt or upset. Severus is the one responsible for reversing that terrible state of affairs. Only last nights unfortunate events have ruined her trust in us, and I expect all of you to help us regain that trust. Because only Kathy has a chance of using her prior friendship with Tom Riddle to approach him and hopefully, drain him of all magical ability.”
Molly stood, wiping her eyes on a hanky and sniffing. “Well I will be glad to welcome her. After what the poor mite’s been through, I think it only right that we do our best for her.”
Several shouts of “here, here.” were heard, along with a few muttered “aye’s.” Remus seemed enthusiastic, while the younger members wanted to know what a Leech was.
As the older ones explained to them, Molly was volunteered as the one who should enter Kathy’s rooms and encourage her to come through and meet everyone. Tonks was hot on her heels, quickly arguing that someone nearer her own age should go in there too.
All wizards were asked to remain seated so as not to appear a threat, since Kathy was clearly going to be extremely nervous, her recent experience not being conductive to putting her at ease.
Severus and Albus lowered the wards, insisting that both women wear the gloves provided, and after unlocking the door, retreated to the farthest reaches of the room, since they were her greatest fear at the moment.
Kathy had been alternately pacing, baking, and cleaning. Her nerves were fraught, she was wired so tightly that any sound might cause her to suddenly snap.
When she heard the click of the door unlocking, she grabbed the nearest things to hand.
Molly opened the door and stood rooted to the spot when she saw a panicked young woman at the other side of the room armed with a long knife in one hand, and a rolling pin in the other, looking for all the world like she might lash out at any moment.
“Wow, you really wanna give it to ’em doncha.” Tonks said, pushing past Molly and moving into the room. She watched Kathy closely, but didn’t take her eyes off the knife or the rolling pin.
Kathy jumped at her voice. She’d expected Severus or Albus to come into the room, or both of them together, not two females. Nevertheless, she eyed them warily, only Albus or Severus could have let them in here.
“Put the knife down dear, there’s a good girl. No one’s going to harm you.” Molly told her.
Kathy still didn’t speak or move, she only watched as the younger of the two casually made her way round the room, seemingly looking round as she drew closer.
“You stay where you are, I know what your doing, well it won’t work. I won’t be tricked. Get out. Your with them, those…. Death things. Now sod off, both of you.”
“Us? Were not Death Eaters, can’t stand the bastards.”
“Nymphadora Tonks, don’t you dare cuss like that. If your mother heard you speak like that… “
“Don’t call me Nymphadora Molly.”
Kathy watched them both, how could they argue over names and swearing when there were evil wizards on the loose.
“Your both barmy, get out.” She yelled at them.
“Well I am, but Molly’s not, she’s one of the sanest people I know, if you don’t count having seven kids that is. But otherwise she’s alright.” Tonks quipped.
“Thank you dear, and there is nothing wrong with having a big family, I’m proud of my children.”
The two women continued to talk and bicker amongst themselves while Kathy felt she was going mad. And the younger one’s hair kept changing colours with her moods. When she was irate, it turned shades of red and fiery orange, when the older woman told her off, it went blue or purple, and if she found something remotely amusing, it changed to violets, pinks and yellows. Kathy was engrossed with it. So much so that she didn’t even notice the two women had advanced on her and grabbed her wrists. They let her go once the knife and rolling pin had been removed from her grasp.
“You tricked me.” She cried. That thing with your hair, the arguing, you did it on purpose to trick me. Well you can just kill me right now because I wont go through it again, I won’t, I won’t.”
As Kathy sunk to the floor, Molly and Tonks followed her down. Molly stroking her hair and offering words of comfort, Tonks sat cross legged and looked at her.
“We really are the good guys you know. We want to help you, not hurt you.” Tonks told her. “Honest, don’t you think we’d have done something as soon as we disarmed you if we were the enemy.”
Kathy sniffed.
“You know she’s right dear, we want to help. We know what happened to you, and we feel terrible that you went through so much. It’s so unfair what happened to you and those poor little girls of yours. I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to one of mine.”
“You know old Snapey’s not a bad sort really. He’s a grumpy git I’ll grant you, but he’s on our side. If you join us, and join with us, we can tell you the truth about him and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I promise. Well maybe not pleasantly, he’ll still be a git whatever we tell you about him.”
“Nymphadora that’s enough about the Professor, and don’t call him Snapey, you know he doesn’t like it.” The older witch admonished.
“I’ll stop calling him Snapey when you stop calling me Nymphadora.” Tonks turned to Kathy. “I really wish I knew what was in mums head when she called me that.”
Kathy couldn’t help the small chuckle that escaped. “Is that really your name?”
“Yeah, stinks doesn’t it.”
“No it’s just… erm…”
“Terrible? Awful? Ridiculous? The worst name anyone could give to a kid? All those and more. You call me Tonks okay.”
“Okay Tonks.”
“And I’m Molly, Molly Weasley. I’m pleased to meet you.” Molly held out a hand and felt embarrassed when Kathy looked down at the gloved hand. “Albus and Severus insisted.”
“My names Kathy, though you probably know that already. So you know what I am.“
Both women nodded.
“It’s okay about the gloves, it’s best to be safe and I haven’t got mine on. I wasn’t expecting you two, I thought they were going to… you know, and I wanted to be ready for them.”
“We understand, why don’t you get them and put them on, then we’ll take you to meet the others. You know Severus and Albus have gone to a great deal of trouble to bring us here, they’re both worried about you.”
Kathy still wasn’t certain what to believe, but she got her gloves and followed them as far as the door. She wanted the security of a quick exit and her rooms behind her.
Three other women sat squashed on an armchair nearest her, while several wizards were cramped up on the sofa and various other chairs at the back of the room. She caught sight of Severus and Albus standing in the farthest corner away from her, watching her every move.
“Something smells nice, like baking.” Sirius said from his perch on the arm of Remus’ chair.
“Trust you to think of your stomach.” Remus shot back.
Kathy listened to the two men, staring a bit longer at the sandy haired man. He reminded her a little of David. She turned her attention to Molly again when she began to introduce her to the three other witches. Kathy nodded at them but didn’t say anything. Then Tonks started introducing the men one at a time. Kathy noticed the younger witch’s expression soften when she got to the sandy haired wizard called Remus Lupin. He in turned blushed slightly when Tonks laid a hand on his shoulder, letting it linger for a moment longer than was necessary.
“Of course you already know these two.” She said, standing next to Severus and Albus.
Kathy couldn’t help it, she scowled at the two wizards.
Severus’ face remained stoic, while Albus offered a hopeful smile.
When the tall black man named Kingsley Shacklebolt stood and approached her. Kathy almost fainted. It was the first time she’d ever seen someone with a different skin colour to her own and he absolutely terrified her.
A deep baritone voice, and a dazzling smile soon put her at ease a little, but still she stared at him. When she realised what she was doing she blushed and lowered her eyes. “I’m sorry, it’s just I’ve never seen… well one of you before.”
Kingsley laughed loudly at her response. At least the girl was honest. “That alright, I’ve never seen one of you before either.”
She stared at him again, unsure what to think of this man, then she laughed too. “No, I’ve never seen one of me before either.”
