Chapter 23
Lucy entered the kitchen, quickly slipping her tongue back in her mouth when she met her grans disproving look. She wasn’t afraid of the roomful of adults, but she wasn’t comfortable about being here when she knew they expected to lay her on the table so they could scratch patterns on her skin with a sharp knife. No chance. Quickly making her way to Hetty’s side, she whispered in her ear. “Gran, I want to go home. Now. I have no intention of sacrificing myself to this bunch of weirdo’s. Why the heck did you bring me here?”
Hetty looked sideways at Lucy, then turned her eyes to a pair of redheads sitting at the far end of the table, their heads together as they spoke quietly to each other.
“Messrs Weasley, perhaps you would care to stand and explain to my granddaughter exactly what induction into the Order involves. This time though, you might wish to give the true version.”
Two very red faced youths stood, lips twitching as they told Lucy what she had to do.
“WHAT?” Lucy screeched. “You pair of gits, you said I was gonna get cut. You said I had to… I’m gonna kill you, both of you.” She ran round the table, fully intent on at least giving the pair a few bruises, while the twins shot out of their seats and raced to the other end of the table out of her reach.
Tonks, Sirius and Bill were almost in hysterics they laughed so much. Kingsley and Remus looked bemused while the rest looked on, interested to see what the outcome would be if she caught them.
“Stand still you pair of… “
The twins froze in place as Lucy slid to a halt behind them. She was about to cuff Fred across the head when long pale fingers wrapped around her wrist, halting her action. She stared furiously at Severus for stopping her, then slowly turned to follow the direction of his eyes.
Fred and George were rooted to the spot, their faces alight with glee at being unable to move. Most everyone else in the room stared with mixed expressions, ranging from mild surprise or amusement, to absolute horror. Mrs Weasley was frantic. “What have you done to them? Let them go immediately.” She insisted, pulling the twins faces to her ample bosom as she checked them out for signs of injury.
“Sorry.” Lucy mumbled, releasing the twins. “I didn’t do it on purpose.” She realised the Potions master was still gripping her wrist quite firmly and it was starting to hurt. “You can let go Professor, I wont do it again.”
“No you wont, because you are going to stand next to me and behave yourself from this moment on.” He looked at Hetty who gave him a slight nod, then pulled her to the head of the table, keeping his grip on her wrist while Albus and Arthur calmed Molly down and the still grinning twins returned to their seats with a wink at Lucy. They thought it was ace that she’d made them stop against their wills.
Lucy stood petulantly, occasionally trying to yank her arm away from the Professor, but he refused to let go. She didn’t think it was fair having to stand here like a naughty child, not when it was the twins that stirred her up in the first place. They’d lied, saying everyone that joined the Order had to spill blood in a sacrificial ritual and she fell for it, hook, line and sinker. Believing she’d somehow become embroiled with a bunch of Satan worshipers or something.
Mumbling to herself, Lucy was taken by surprise when Severus gave her arm a sharp twist. The headmaster was speaking to her and she hadn’t heard a word.
When Albus passed her the parchment and asked her to read it aloud, she did, not really paying attention to the words, then felt a swirl of magic surround her as she finished. “What was that?”
“If you were paying attention Miss Grindelwald, you would have known it was the oath taking.”
She looked up at Severus. “What oath?”
He sighed, finally releasing her wrist and pinching the bridge of his nose. “I truly hope you have a longer attention span when you enter my classroom.” He walked away from her to get a cup of tea, leaving Hetty and Albus to explain.
“So all this was just so I wouldn’t say anything about what happened the other day, and what gran told me. Why didn’t you just ask me to keep my mouth shut? I can keep a secret you know.”
“No one disputes that dear, but these are difficult times. Without the oath, there are ways information can be forced to the fore. An oath is the only way to ensure that any sensitive information remains, secret.” Hetty stroked her granddaughters hair affectionately. “You are an intelligent young lady Lucy, eventually you will figure out more and more of what we are about, it is better you are bound by oath now, rather than waiting and trusting to fate.”
“You will not be expected to undertake any further action as a member Lucy.” Albus told her. “This is merely a safeguard, for Severus’ protection as much as yours and everyone here. You have already witnessed the results of what Voldemort is capable of with those he considers his allies, imagine what he might do to those who are not.”
Lucy was allowed to leave the meeting and join the others in the living room. “You knew they were lying to me you rotten lot.” Lucy growled as she entered the room.”
Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny all looked at her warily, until she cracked out laughing. “Honest to God, I nearly wet myself when I went in there. They all looked so serious. What is this place anyway? It’s dead gloomy.”
“This is headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. It’s actually Sirius’ house, he lent it to the headmaster as a kind of safe house.”
“Sirius, he’s the cute bloke with the moustache and long hair isn’t he?”
Ginny giggled while the trio turned a bit pink.
“Ugh, Sirius cute? You have to be kidding me.” Ron said.
“No, a bit ancient but he’s not bad.”
Harry and Ron sat frowning while Lucy, Hermione and Ginny discussed the merits of the various males in attendance.
“You have to be kidding me.” Ginny exclaimed when Lucy mentioned she thought Severus was pretty sexy.
“Oh come on, look at him next time you get a chance. I mean really look. He’s got that whole bad boy thing going on, and his voice, sheesh, it’s to die for. And his eyes, have you looked at his eyes?” Lucy asked in a whisper so the boys wouldn‘t hear, a slightly far away look in her own. Can you imagine that voice and those eyes when he’s doing it, bloody hell it’d be heaven.”
Hermione and Ginny stared at her like she’d just dropped in from outer space.
“What’s up with you two? Don’t tell me you’ve never… Oh you haven’t. Well that’s cool, but I need to get laid, and soon. It’s been weeks since… well, the last time.”
The girls looked at her awestruck. “You’ve really done it? What was it like?” Ginny wanted to know.
“Never you mind what it was like Ginny. If Ron thought for one second you were contemplating having… well just don’t.” Hermione told the youngest Weasley.
Lucy knew when to call a halt, she had no intentions of being held responsible for Ginny wanting to experiment. “So what year are you four in, you do go to Hogwarts don’t you?”
“Yes we do.” Hermione answered, relieved for the change of subject. “Ginny’s year five and me, Ron and Harry will be year six when we start back in September.”
“That’s cool, I’m in year six too. But it’s gonna be strange, I don’t think I’ll fit in too well. I’ve been having lessons over the summer, but it’s nothing like what I’m used to. I want to be a vet, I planned to go to Liverpool university and study, but gran says I have to give this other world a chance first and I don‘t want to leave her. It’s okay, just takes a bit of getting used to, and you have that Voldemort weirdo. I don’t fancy meeting up with him on a dark night.”
Ron and Ginny blanched at the name Voldemort, earning a look from Hermione. The Weasley’s still could not get used to the idea of saying his name.
They five spent a reasonably happy hour discussing Hogwarts, the various houses, Voldemort, and wanting to know why Lucy was allowed to join the Order when she was clearly underage.
Lucy knew why now, but the oath prevented her from saying anything. “Bloody hell, am I gonna get choked every time I accidentally say something I shouldn’t?”
They all nodded.
