James brought breakfast up to Harry in the morning. “How are you feeling?” he asked.
“Better,” Harry answered quietly.
“Good,” James smiled and set the tray of food down and sat
in a chair beside the bed to eat with his son.
“Dad, can I ask you something?” Harry asked as he played
with his food.
“Of course.”
“Last night, you called Voldemort Uncle Tommy, and said you
were adopted….”
James sighed and sat back in his chair. “That all by itself is a lot to take. You’ve already been through a lot, but I
suppose you deserve to know. Yes,
Voldemort is my uncle, and your great uncle.
The story about his mother dying and leaving him in an orphanage is
true, but before that she lived with her father and brother. If you think some families today are pure
blood obsessed… They were of the blood
line of Salazar Slytherin, and they intended to keep it pure. Before Voldemort, his mother had a son with
her brother. The baby was taken by the
Ministry though.”
Harry wrinkled his nose.
“With her brother? Please tell me
you don’t mean…”
James smiled softly and squeezed Harry’s hand. “Believe me, I know… Anyway, that son grew up in a Ministry foster
home and was tossed out when he was seventeen.
And yes, he ended up being my father.
He fell in love with a woman and then raped her because he didn’t know
any better.”
Harry took it all in, feeling like he was going to
explode. “How did you find out?”
“Actually, Voldemort told me. I really don’t want to talk about the
details, but he tried to get me to join him by telling me everything Dumbledore
was keeping from me.”
“Dumbledore knew?” Harry asked in surprise.
James chuckled.
“Haven’t you learned by now that Dumbledore knows everything?” he
mused. “Anyway, I confronted him and he
confirmed everything. He said he hadn’t
wanted to tell me until I was ready.”
Harry took a piece of buttered toast to munch on while he
listened. “But you said you were adopted
and you grew up at Hogwarts. Is that
really true?”
“Yes,” James nodded and took a sip of his tea. “It’s all true, but don’t get ahead of
me. When my mother found out she was
pregnant she wanted nothing to do with me, but she was morally against
abortion. Instead she didn’t tell anyone
about me and when I was born she took me to the Ministry orphanage.”
“Wait, are the elves our biological family, or adopted
family?” Harry asked, suddenly wondering.
“Let me finish….” James sighed. “Then I’ll answer your questions if you still
have any. And they’re our biological
family. Your great grandfather Ivar is
my mother’s father. But as I was saying,
I was at the orphanage until I was about two.
Most kids display some magic at a young age, but I got the Ministry’s
attention. The last straw was when
another kid stole a toy I was playing with and I teleported him to Greenland. I could also Apparate, and the Ministry was
worried. The average young wizard child
can only do small things. The
Wizengamont gathered to decide what to do with me. Since I was only a small child Dumbledore
decided he would take responsibility for me.”
“So he got someone to adopt you and watch over you?”
“No. He adopted me.”
Harry’s eyes went wide with disbelief. “He adopted you… That would kind of make him my grandfather
too. Why didn’t he keep me instead of…”
Harry half shouted angrily.
“He was probably trying to avoid the mistakes he made with
me, like he was trying to avoid the mistakes he made with Voldemort by adopting
me. He thought keeping me close rather
than having me sit unwanted and unloved in an orphanage would keep me from
becoming psychotic and hell bent on world domination.”
“And…?”
“I’m not hell bent on world domination… I was very lonely though. He was a busy man back then too. I was basically raised by house elves and the
entire Hogwarts staff. I guess it was
better than being in an orphanage.”
“So how did Dumbledore know about your biological family if
you were left at an orphanage?”
“I don’t know exactly.
I know that when my mother finally confessed to her father what she’d
done he sought me out. Elves don’t turn
their backs on family no matter what the circumstances of their conception
are. He and Dumbledore put two and two
together, and did a blood test to make sure.”
Harry frowned. “So in
my second year… they were right. I am
the heir of Slytherin!”
James took his son’s hand.
“You are, but don’t let that define you.
Blood is the stuff that carries oxygen and stuff through your body and
nothing more. I’m a Parselmouth, and so
is Dumbledore. Do you think we’re dark
wizards?”
Harry shook his head.
“There’s an old saying.
It’s not what your gifts are that defines you but how you use them. There is no such thing as an evil power, only
evil intentions. The same goes for
bloodlines. You choose your own path.”
Harry looked like he felt a little better. “That’s exactly what Dumbledore said. Dad, where am I going this summer?”
James frowned and stared down at his hands for a
moment. “The Dursleys’.”
“What?” Harry yelled as he nearly jumped out of bed.
“Only for a little while,” James sighed. “Dumbledore gave us all a list of things to
do. I don’t even have a home yet. I’m going to be staying with Lucius for a
while, but the place will be crawling with Death Eaters. I’ll have to hide in the nearest closet or
under the closest bed at a moments notice.
That’s no way for you to live. We
talked about it late last night, and decided you should go there
temporarily. We were caught off guard by
what happened and we’re struggling to keep up.
And Fudge refusing to cooperate is an extra blow. In fact, I have to go somewhere with
Dumbledore tonight. But don’t worry,
Sirius and I will take you back. The
same goes for this summer as for last; if we don’t hear from you at least once
a week we’ll come get you immediately.
Once we get something permanent set up we’ll come get you.”
“What about the Weasleys?” Harry asked. “Why can’t I stay with them?”
James bit his lip and shook his head. “Harry, they have lots of things to do too,
and a houseful of kids. Please just
trust me, I’ve been through this before.
We’re all in danger, but we want you to be safe.”
Harry let out a deep sigh and gave up. It seemed no matter how hard he tried he
would never be free of the Dursleys.
Draco came to visit him very late that evening. Harry was fast asleep and was startled when
he was shaken awake. He in turn startled
Draco who stood over his bed panting for a moment. “Sorry, I just wanted to see how you were.”
“Brilliant,” Harry answered sarcastically. “So I guess the whole school knows what
happened by now.”
Draco shook his head and cautiously sat on the edge of the
bed. “No, not really. Dumbledore made a short little speech this
morning at breakfast this morning telling us not to badger you.”
“Oh…” Harry breathed a sigh of relief.
“My father told me what he knew,” Draco continued. That must’ve been horrible.” The blonde reached over to take Harry’s hand,
but pulled back instantly when he felt a spark pulse through him.
Harry seemed to feel it too, and gazed up at Draco with
those deep emerald eyes. Neither boy
knew what to say so they sat in silence for what felt like hours. “I really wish you could come home with me
this summer,” Draco confessed. “But
Father says it’s too dangerous.
Harry raised an eyebrow and Draco blushed a deep crimson. “I just…
I mean, I’ve enjoyed our conversations and stuff. I’ve never had a real friend before. I like it.
But this summer I’m going to have to go back to that big empty house and
pretend to like Pansy when she comes to visit.”
“So your dad is still making you marry her?” Harry asked in
disbelief.
“We haven’t really talked about it,” Draco said as he
stood. “There’s just too much going on
all at once. Anyway, I can’t stay
long. I just thought I’d come see how
you were.”
“I’m… here.” Harry said with a weak smile. “And I wish I could come with you too.”
Draco gave Harry a warm smile before turning and
leaving. Harry stayed a wake for a
little while thinking about how strange and out of place a smile like that
looked on Draco’s face, but at the same time it made him look handsome.
Harry was let out of the Hospital Wing in the morning. Even though the other students didn’t ask him
questions, Harry preferred to avoid them.
He was quite content to wait until everyone had left the Great Hall to
eat his own meals. The only time he
couldn’t avoid the other students was the end of the year feast.
The entire hall was decorated in black drapes instead of the
usual colors of the House that had won the Inter-House competition. Harry figured it had been done to honor Cedric’s
memory. At the end of the feast
Dumbledore revealed to all how Cedric died.
James thought it was a mistake to do so, but the older wizard was
insistent.
Harry wondered if he would be taken straight to the Dursleys’,
but he was allowed ride the train with his friends. Harry was grateful for that because he
enjoyed the time they spent in the train compartment. James and Sirius were waiting for him at the
train station to take him back.
