“Maybe we should get you home.” Ron told him.
“What would that do?” Draco asked. “I hid at Hogwart’s, I’m not about to start again.”
“This isn’t hiding,” Lucius said, “this is about safety.”
“I agree.” Ron said, giving his hand another squeeze. “There is no need to subject yourself to this.”
“You shouldn’t be here.” They turned to Ginny Weasley’s voice as she walked in. “They are getting pretty angry out there.”
“Have the other Aurors shown up?” Ron asked.
“Yes, Tonks and Moody are out there.” She said. “Things are under control for now but they are throwing some very ugly words around.”
“I’m going out there.” Draco said firmly.
“That’s not a good idea.” Ginny said. “Give a statement to the papers, for now just go home.”
“She’s right, son.” Lucius added. “This isn’t necessary.”
“Enough!” Draco cried, holding his ears for a moment. “I am not going to run and hide. I have nothing to be ashamed of.”
He looped his arm in Ron’s and together that walked to the store front and out the doors. Several cries erupted, along with an angry shout. An old man and an old woman stood in the front of the group. Draco tightened his grip on Ron’s arms, but the ginger at his side made no move to remove him. He would stand by Draco’s decision.
“Excuse me,” Draco called, “I understand you have some objections to my presence this afternoon.”
“I have some objections to a lot of things young man.” The old man called out.
Draco looked at the man. “And you are?”
“Angry! You flaunt your,” he gestured wildly to Ron, “well that, for all the world to see. Have you no decency to keep that in your own home?” Several others called out their agreement.
“I do.” Draco smiled. “I have never had sex in public.” Ron chuckled beside him.
“Draco,” Lucius whispered beside him, “Riling them up is not a good idea.”
“You there,” the woman yelled, “you’re his father?”
Lucius looked at the woman. “Yes I am.”
“How could you let that happen? You let him become this disgusting thing!” She yelled out as the crowd behind her vocally agreed.
“My son is not disgusting.” Lucius said. He spoke calmly and it served a purpose. The crowd was forced to listen to him and had to settle down themselves. Lucius had done enough public speaking to know how to control a crowd. “His life is typical of many in the country.”
“He throws it out in public, for all the world to see!” A random voice in the crowd called out.
“I flaunt my own wife for the world to see sir.” Lucius said calmly.
“Then you are normal.” The old man said. “There isn’t any reason that we should be subjected to the sickness of your son!”
“You don’t have to be subjected to anything.” Tonks said from her positions. “Nobody says you have to be here, if you object to the store, you can leave and refuse to patron it.”
“We want him to leave!” The old woman cried.
“This is a public book signing and he has the right to be here.” Harry told the crowd.
“Then we have the right to be here also.” The old man told him.
“Listen up,” Harry jumped on a step and raised his voice, “if you wish to express your outrage then do it from the side.”
“It is our job to make sure nobody is subjected to his disgusting habits.” The old woman shouted.
“If you so that, we can haul the whole lot of you to Azkaban.” Moody cried. “Obstruction of the Public Property can take hours to process, and I have nothing else to do for the day.”
A timid looking young man appeared from the side. He glanced around the crowd and then saw Draco and Ron standing in front of the door. “Don’t go in there son, you can turn around and walk away right now.” The old man spoke directly to him.
The young man looked up at Draco. He couldn’t have been more then eighteen, with shaggy light brown hair, and typical youthful attire, jeans and a muggle sweatshirt.
“Walk away young man, don’t expose yourself to that!” The woman yelled in a screeching harpies voice.
“That’s enough of that.” Moody called.
The young man looked up at Draco and gestured to the book he was holding. “I was late to the last signing, I was hoping I could get it signed today.”
“You bought that disgusting book?” A woman cried in the crowd.
“Of course I’ll sign it.” Draco came forward and took a quill from his robes. He was scrawling out a brief note, something he never did, when a shout came out from Harry.
“Draco, look out!” He looked up and was able to seeing the flying book just in time to push himself and the young man, who said his name was Greg, out of the way.
Moody sprung into action and soon enough a containment spell was encased over the book store and windows were sealed with the exception of the door. “Weasley, get him inside!”
Ron ran for Draco and grabbed his hand, dragging him back into the store. Harry had run for Greg doing the same. Lucius slammed the door shut and stayed by it listening to Moody and Tonk deal with the crowd. It was mostly older witches and wizards, so Moody’s harsh authority easily subdued them since Draco had been removed as an eye target.
“Who threw the book?” Ron asked.
“It came from the middle of the group, Moody will figure it out.” Harry told him. “Are you alright?” He asked the young man.
“Yes, I’m fine.” He said. “I didn’t mean to cause any problem.”
“It wasn’t you, it was them.” Draco said. He opened the book he was still holding and quickly finished signing. “Here you go.”
“Thank you so much.” He said, then looked to the door. “How do I get out of here?”
“I’ll apparate you out.” Ginny offered. “I’ll be right back.” She gave Harry a quick kiss and took the young man’s hand. The vanished in a loud crack.
“You should go home too.” Harry told Draco. He only nodded and let Ron take his arm. The appeared in their home, and Draco let himself fall into an armchair.
“That went nice.” He said.
Ron brought him a drink and sat beside him. “You can’t control a few fanatics.”
“A few, there had to be between about fifteen to twenty people there.” Draco countered.
“It could have been worse. It was just a group of people who were bored. There could have been a whole formal demonstration going on. This could have been a lot worse.” He said.
“I feel sorry for Greg.” Draco let his body fall against Ron’s. “He only wanted a book signed.”
“And he got his book signed.” Ron told him. They rested together, until Draco’s nerves had calmed down. Narcissa Malfoy showed up that evening frantic. A warm tea calmed her nerves, and Ron reassured her that nothing violent happened.
Harry and Ginny also came by that evening. Moody had found the person who tossed the book. A young woman named Sylvia. She had obtained the book from her brother who had bought it when it was first released. A casual comment about the writer started an argument during dinner, between her brother and parents about supporting a gay writer. She came to the signing to give back the book, and she claimed that’s what she was doing.
Draco spoke to the book store owner who still wanted to hold the signing, although with a different method. He proposed that only those who bought the book be allowed into the signing area, which would be on the upper level. The stairs would be monitored and customers let up one at a time. Draco thought it was unnecessary, but Ron thought it was a good idea.
“Think about it. There was a reporter there today, and by tomorrow, everyone will know what happened. You may end up selling copies just on the coverage alone.” Ron had said.
The owner agreed. “I have seen this happen before. Someone famous, even notorious draws attention. You’ve already had the bad attention, now people are curious about it.” He said. “That reporter was scribbling away at his notepad, this will be covered, trust me. We can set up the signing for the day after tomorrow. It will give people time to read the article, and decide if they want to buy the book just to see what the big deal is about.
“I didn’t want to sell books this way.” Draco countered.
“Publicity is publicity either way.” He said.
“Alright, if you’re willing to do re-arrange your shop.” Draco agreed and another signing was arranged and advertised.
The next morning Draco woke up and found that Ron had risen before him. It was unusual, because Draco was normally the first one up. “This is a surprise.”
“So was this.” Ron said, handing the Daily Prophet to Draco, and filling plates for them while he read.
‘Lucius Malfoy, father of bestselling author Draco Malfoy was on hand yesterday at a scheduled book signing his son had agreed to, but the event didn’t go according to plan.
Just before the signing got underway, a group of people led by Mr. and Mrs. Willerton arrived and demanded from the storeowner that the signing be canceled.
“They objected to an openly gay writer being promoted in such a fashion.” The owner, Douglas Wanning told us. “They threatened to protest the entire event and block the entrance of the store so buyers couldn’t enter.”
The tactic worked, and many shoppers in the area stayed clear of the bookstore. Only one young man was brave enough to approach, carrying his own copy of the book. When the author proceeded to sign, a book came hurling from the crowd. Sylvia Logan had her own personal issues with the author and was taken into custody but the Aurors, but the damage had been done. The author and his boyfriend, Nimbus broom designer Ron Weasley, quickly apparted away from the back of the store, and the Aurors on hand dispersed the crowd.
Lucius Malfoy remained at the site to make sure that all the assailents had been dispersed. His anguish was evident. “My son is a brilliant writer and came here to promote his work, not his lifestyle. He is openly gay and in a very loving relationship with a man who values him.”
Malfoy Senior was notably upset about this incident and has vowed that he will make sure his son is safe during the rescheduled signing tomorrow afternoon. Aurors Harry Potter and Dora Tonks-Lupin will also be on site for crowd control if necessary.
Draco Malfoy and his boyfriend Ron Weasley could not be reached for comment.’
Draco dropped the newspaper, and looked at Ron. “A loving relationship?”
“Looks like your father has accepted a few things since then.” Ron said smiling.
“He’s accepted it long ago, he told me, but he never……”
“I know, he never enthusiastically supported it.” Ron finished. “It was big of him.”
Draco smiled brightly. “Yes it was.”
Ron focused on his boyfriend. Acceptance was something Lucius was working on, and he had been doing great the past year or so, but to have him as an advocate for his son’s lifestyle was something that Ron could tell meant a lot to Draco. He watched as Draco stared at the wall, while chewing slowly. His beautiful blonde boyfriend had the father son relationship that he had dreamed of.
