Sirius sat in front of the fireplace, watching the smooth black egg intently. It had been wiggling for the past few days. Death had said to put it in the fireplace and watch it. And he had. He’d been watching it in his spare time. Between trying to juggle a balance between caring for Tom and not letting Harry feel abandoned, Sirius had faithfully watched the soot-colored egg in the fireplace.
He wondered what was in it. Was this how phoenixes were born? Had Death given him a phoenix? It made a little sense, he supposed. Death had to have given phoenixes a reprieve from his visits for them to continue existing after they Burned.
A small pinging sound startled him, and he saw a crack form on the smooth surface. He immediately levitated the egg out of the fire.
“Tom! Harry! The egg is hatching!” he called loudly.
There was the sound of feet pounding the stairway, and Tom ran into the room excitedly, with Harry entering a few moments behind him, looking calmer, but no less curious. Viatoris glided into the room last, taking a position away from them in case whatever his Father had given to Sirius didn’t care for Dementors.
Another crack appeared on the surface of the egg, and Tom made an awed sound as fissure like cracks branched off from each other. There was a small pop as something broke through the black shell, and Sirius was utterly confused when he saw it was a paw.
Then with a mighty snap, the egg fell apart, and two small forms tumbled from within. It looked like a crimson colored kitten at the back, but the front legs were curled yellow avian feet. The heads of the small creatures were heads shaped like a cat’s, but instead of a mouth there was a pointy little beak, and tufted, feathery ears. There were also wet, undersized wings on their backs, already drying near the warm air of the fire.
They looked like a mix between a griffin and a phoenix.
“What is it?” Tom whispered.
“Gryffix.” Viatoris stated smoothly. “My father’s proudest creation. I suppose you could liken them to a mix between a Griffin and a Phoenix, but that would be insulting the Gryffix. They are very proud, very fierce, and very loyal. They are Immortal, and Burn like a phoenix if injured.” The Dementor added, gliding closer to the two newborn Gryffix cubs. One of them opened its eyes, and Sirius was a bit in awe at how closely those large orange eyes matched Death’s eyes.
The other opened its beak and gave a soft meow. Then it rolled over, and Sirius noticed a small scrap of parchment. He carefully reached towards the scrap, and picked it up. It enlarged in his hand, revealing elegant, curled scrawl.
Mr. Black
These are Gryffixes, a particularly fascinating creation of mine. You’ll find them very similar in temperament to a Phoenix, but in other ways very different. These two are not brother and sister, but I found it convenient to form them in the same egg for transportation issues. I ask that you keep one for yourself, and find someone worthy to give the other two.
When they are five, they will mate. Your world is ready for the Gryffixes, I feel sure. They will be an asset to you and your family.
Signed,
Your friendly neighborhood Grim Reaper
Ah…I recommend giving one to someone who doesn’t live in your house. They do not get extremely big, but you’ll find that two cats the size of a large dog , that can also fly, may get to be a handful.
“Oh…well that’s a grand idea.” Sirius said, looking down at the unassuming kits. One, the larger one that Sirius assumed was the boy, got to its feet unsteadily and took a step towards him, mewling hungrily. “What do they eat?” he asked suddenly, scanning the letter.
“Mix up a bottle with goat’s milk and jalapeno juice. They love spicy food, even as kittens.” Viatoris replied, gliding closer to them.
“Which one are you going to keep, Sirius?” Harry asked, reaching forward and running his finger over the smaller Gryffix’s back. It gave a small meow, and tried to nibble Harry’s finger with a surprisingly sharp beak.
“I guess this one here.” He said, picking up the little male. “Hmm…what to call you?” he asked, and the little face turned up at him with intelligent orange eyes. “Orangey?” he asked. The kit blinked, and then hissed at him. “Whoa! Geez, fine…umm…Herbert?” he tried again, and this time was pecked for his efforts. “Merlin! You’re rabid! How about Foamy?” he asked facetiously. The little black beak opened again, preparing for a hiss. “Joking! Joking! How about…Aslan? I read a book one time and there was a powerful lion named that…and since you’re kind of half-griffin…” he said, preparing for the sharp sting of the beak.
The little Gryffix mewled in content, and then started to nibble affectionately at his thumb. “Aslan it is…” he said, grinning.
“So…” Harry drawled, scratching the girl Gryffix behind her feathered ear. “Who are you giving the other one to?”
~~
Lucius looked at the scarlet cat…thing…in Sirius’ hands.
“You want to give my daughter…..that?” he asked. The kit mewled, and then burped, releasing a puff of smoke. “Good lord…do they breathe fire?” he asked.
“I dunno…I had to feed her jalapenos for lunch….so maybe…” he said. “But hey! A fire-breathing cat would be great protection at Hogwarts!” Sirius said. Lucius narrowed his silver eyes at the Gryffix. Orange eyes stared coolly back at him, before the kit meowed again.
Lucius sighed, and called for a house elf to retrieve Grace. When she entered the room, she spotted the Gryffix in Sirius’ hand.
“Aw! How cute! What is it?” she asked, ignoring her father. He cleared his throat slightly, but it failed to catch her attention as she cooed gently at the kit.
“It’s a Gryffix. Like a mix between a griffin and a phoenix, but on a smaller scale. I was just asking your dad if he’d mind you taking care of this one. I found myself with two and wanted someone trustworthy to take the other one.” He said. Grace gently took the Gryffix from Sirius’ hands, and then looked back at her father, who was looking at them both with an annoyed expression on his face.
“I suppose you want to keep it, then?” he asked. Grace’s response was to blink a few times, and then look at him with large, twinkling silver eyes. It was eerie, and made her look like a puppy that someone had been cruel to. He found himself unable to turn away. He sighed. “Fine.”
Grace squealed, and cuddled the soft Gryffix to her chest, eliciting a purring chirp from the creature.
“I will call you Nala, because your look like a Nala.” She cooed, and promptly left the room with her new friends. Sirius and Lucius looked at each other for a few moments.
“Well...see ya at the Halloween Ball.” Sirius said, before bowing teasingly to Lucius and nearly scampering from the room. Lucius looked at the empty doorway for a bit, before starting suddenly.
"There seems to be an over abundance of complications in my life right now."
~~
Sirius, Tom and Harry stood in front of the rather sad looking house, debating on whether or not to knock.
“Are you sure about this, Tom?” Sirius asked, for what seemed like the millionth time.
“Yes, Siri.” Tom answered calmly. Harry said nothing, and was only there as emotional support and another wand. Tom reached up finally, and knocked firmly on the door. There was a few moments of silence, before the door was wrenched open, and Severus Snape glared at all of them.
“All of you can go to hell.” He hissed, and slammed the door again.
“Well it was worth a try.” Sirius said, and started to turn.
“Sirius!” Tom exclaimed. Sirius groaned, and turned back as Tom knocked again.
“Fuck off!” Snape snarled from behind the door.
“Please, sir. I just want to talk to you.” Tom pleaded.
“I want nothing to do with you, you damned spawn of a demon!” Was the reply. Tom sighed.
“Please, I just want to help-”
The door was wrenched open so hard that for a moment Tom was afraid it would fall off its hinges. Sirius had his wand in his hand as Severus stood in the doorway, his black hair slightly wild as he glared at young Tom.
“You ‘helped’ enough, you little shit. I want nothing to do with you, I want nothing you have to offer. I almost died because of your ‘counter-part’ and so I damn well would like for you to leave me alone!” he snapped. “I will not be indebted to you again.” He added, his voice softer, but no less harsh.
“You are not indebted to me, sir! If anything, I am indebted to you! I only wanted to do something nice for you!” Tom exclaimed, his brown eyes wide. Severus narrowed his fathomless black eyes at the boy, slipping into the unprotected mind with ease. He pulled back with a gasp.
“You can make the Mark disappear?” he asked.
Sirius growled. “Did you just go into his mind?” he asked. Severus ignored Sirius.
“I can, sir. That’s all I want to do, and then I’ll leave, and never bother you again.” Tom said, unbothered by his adopted father’s ire.
Severus glared at them all for a few moments, before standing back from the door to allow them entrance.
The inside of the house was much cleaner and neater than the outside, but they didn’t know that it was because there was a woman living there now. Although Harry and Sirius did end up pausing and staring as they spied Stasja sitting on the floor, playing with Nikolai.
The baby shrieked with laughter as she used her wand to flutter a little stuffed bird around his head. Ever so often the soft plush toy would swoop, and Stasja would make a small ‘boop’ noise as its beak poked Nikolai in the nose.
Tom looked up at Snape. Severus was turned to look at Stasja and his son, and had an uncharacteristically soft look on his face. Tom found the expression comforting, for it meant this man was capable of emotions other than anger and hate. But it was almost as if Severus could sense Tom staring at him, because he turned back to the boy, and scowled fiercely, causing Tom to shrink back a little.
Severus shut the door with more force than necessary, and Stasja looked up.
“We have company.” She said simply, her voice quiet. She’d been practicing with a very low volume the past few days, and was relieved that her voice hadn’t disappeared.
“They will not be long.” Snape replied.
“No, sir, it doesn’t take long. You would be more comfortable if you sat down…separating the Dark Mark from your magic will take a lot out of you.” Tom said seriously. Snape stared down his large nose at him.
“I’ll take my chances on my feet.” He replied quietly. Tom shrugged, and reached into his pocket, withdrawing his dagger. Snape hissed, and went for his wand.
“Wait! I have to make a sacrifice of blood to get rid of it! I’ll be cutting myself!” Tom said quickly, noting that Harry and Sirius both had their wands already, but were quiet. Snape put his wand back in his robe, watching Tom intently. “Bare the Mark for me, please, sir.”
Snape unbuttoned his left sleeve, and pushed the material back to reveal the faded, ugly Mark. Tom reached out and pressed his finger to the Mark, and color flared into the tattoo. Snape hissed again, and nearly yelped when Tom spoke to the Mark.
“Peace, serpent.” He said lightly, and the undulating Mark stopped sending waves of agony through Snape’s arm. Tom then unsheathed his blade, and looked at the sharp point for a moment before pressing his thumb to it, and making a clean nick. He then wrapped his hand around Snape’s arm, resting his bloodied thumb on the Mark. “Leave this man in peace, serpent. Your Master commands it.”
Tom felt a great wave of resistance, like trying to open a door someone was standing in front of.
“I will not!”
Tom’s brown eyes widened when he realized the Mark had refused his order. But he frowned, and put his other hand on Snape’s arm, holding him with both hands.
“Serpent, I command you to leave. I am your Master.” He said angrily. Another push of magic nearly knocked him away from Snape, and he became vaguely aware of someone screaming. He didn’t look away from the Mark. A primal, instinctual feeling welled up inside him. Though it was from another era, this was his magic. And he would not let his magic win over his will. “BE GONE!” Tom bellowed in Parseltongue.
There was a sound like a bolt of lightning striking metal, and a force greater than he had ever felt before enveloped both him and Snape, before throwing them apart forcefully. Luckily for Snape, he smacked a wall and slid bonelessly to the floor.
Tom hit a rickety bookshelf, collapsing it on top of him and spreading dust everywhere. He was barely aware of book corners poking him unmercifully before everything went black.
Sirius went for Tom, throwing back books and pulling the boy from the rubble.
Harry started towards Snape, but a blur passed in front of him, and he found Stasja standing in front of Snape’s prone body, her fangs bared. Nikolai was being held close to her chest, and was wailing in fright. Stasja hissed at Harry, and he backed away from Snape.
Tom groaned, and gave a short sob. His head hurt…His eyes were throbbing, and he felt as though he’d fallen off of a building.
His eyes fluttered open, and Sirius’ face came into focus. He saw Sirius’ blue eyes widen in shock.
“Fuck a duck…” Sirius said vehemently. Tom started to panic.
“What? What is it? Oh, God, Sirius…what happened?” he asked. Sirius seemed to snap out of it.
“N-nothing, son….nothing at all…” he stuttered. “The backlash from the spell…it…er…might have tinted your eyes a bit…” he hedged nervously. “A bit red….” He added.
Tom stared at Sirius, waiting for him to shout out that he was joking.
“Let me see…” he whispered. Sirius flicked his wand, causing a reflective surface to appear from thin air. He looked fearfully into the mirror-like surface, and gave a cry of shock.
The irises of his eye had gone shockingly, vibrantly red. They still looked like normal eyes, but the color had gone almost neon in its intensity.
“Will it g-go away?” Tom whispered. Sirius mumbled something non-committal-ly, and Tom burst into tears. He felt himself drawn up into Sirius’ arms, and buried his face into the man’s shoulder, crying pitifully.
“You should leave.”
Sirius turned around, and noticed Stasja glaring at them both, still guarding Snape, who was out cold. Harry was already near the door.
“C’mon, Sirius. Let’s deal with this at home.” He said. Sirius stood with a sobbing Tom in his arms, and silently walked towards the door. Harry opened it for him, and they walked out in silence. Harry turned back one last time and saw the woman kneel at Snape’s side, cradling her son with one hand and reaching out to stroke Snape’s face with the other. Harry shut the door behind him, and they all disappeared with a crack.
~~
Stasja gently pushed Severus’ fine black hair from his face, her fingers gently lingering on his cheek. Nikolai was starting to quiet down, and so she stood from her position on the floor, and drew her wand. With a flick she Levitated Severus, and floated him to the sofa. She positioned him almost lovingly, and then deposited a much calmer Nikolai in his play pen.
She walked to Severus’ room, and came back a few minutes later with a bundle in her hands, and went about changing him from his restricting robes into soft cotton pyjamas. He only stirred once, and a few soft words and a carress from Stasja put him right back under. He began to shiver as she finished buttoning the shirt, and so she pulled down a throw off of the back of the sofa, and tucked him in. She leaned down, and pressed her cool lips to his, a soft expression on her face.
“You helped me. So I will help you.”

Aww...*insert Vampire/Snape joke here*
*Cackle madly*
Indeed. So....I love reviews. I would shamelessly beg for them. Now, i'm not gonna lie....when I see alot of reviews I get excited, and get motivated. That's not to say I'll quit the story if you don't say something. It's hard to explain without sounding cheesy, but those reviews are like my butterbeer on a cold day. They are my phoenix song in the chamber of secrets. They *complete* me.
So....uh...*hint, hint, nudge nude*
