Title: A Godfather's duty

Summary: Lily's dead, Severus is in mourning. He contemplates what to do with the rest of his life when fate takes a hand.

A reader on AO3 asked for a chapter on Sev's pregnancy. This isn't exactly what she wanted but it's what wanted to be written...

Outtake 3
Male pregnancies were tricky.
Once Harry was safe at home, Andromeda spent her ‘free time’ healing the damage of Narcissa’s near miscarriage and watching Sev’s pregnancy.
She applauded Remus’ ‘rules’ as well as putting Sev on a special diet to help him nurture the twins’ growth properly as well as start heal the damage of his childhood starvation.

Severus was attending Draco’s birthday party when he thought he felt contractions.
Andromeda swept him into the floo taking him to St. Mungos…
She frowned at him. “I’m afraid you’re not actually experiencing ‘labour’. Your ‘womb’ is merely trying to stretch a bit. I’m going to have you admitted to the ward so I can keep a healer’s eye on you. Wizards never carry to full term; their bodies can’t take the stress. I’ll have to be ready to give you a caesarean when the twins are ready. One of the girls I’m not worried about at all. It’s the little one that worries me. They share the same placenta and that always carries risk. It’s harder to tell in a male bearer but their twin-to-twin transference seems to have worsened. They started off equal in size but since March one is growing at a slower rate.”
Severus flinched, “What’s the difference now?”
“12%.” Andromeda sighed. “You’re just starting your seventh month Severus, I’m going to monitor you here,”
Severus whispered, “Twelve? It was nine two weeks ago…”
“That’s why I’m concerned Severus, the closer to twenty the greater likelihood of losing the little one. Which is not allowed by the way, I haven’t lost a baby or a bearer yet and I don’t intend to.” Andromeda said sternly.
Severus cradled his stomach, “I know we have Harry and Cora but I can’t even lose one of these girls.”
“You’ll be fine. I’m going to send a patronus to let Remus know to bring Harry here. I’m going to put you in one of the ward’s more comfortable rooms. We’ll bring in a larger crib for Harry and Cora. Remus can stay with you. With Harry’s emotional dependence, even with the tenuous nature of your pregnancy I won’t cause him any more trauma.”
Andromeda escorted him to a comfortable room with a large bed; it was about the size of a Slytherin prefect’s sitting room.
It would house Severus and his little family comfortably until Andromeda delivered the twins.

A third year healing student cast a sono spell on Severus to check the size differential of the twins.
“Oh dear!”
Then the witch ran off.
Severus started to panic.
Remus held him close, “Andromeda will be here soon…”
It was fifteen minutes before Andromeda arrived they had a floating bed with them.
Severus was having a hard time breathing properly when he saw it.
Andromeda poured a potion down his throat, “Severus you will calm down. Claire give Remus the paediatric sleeping potion. Moira firecall Lady Malfoy!”
Remus blinked when the healing student handed him a potion.
“Give it to Harry and Cora. Cissy will be here to watch them. I’m going to have to deliver the babies now. I have a delivery room prepping. As soon as Cissy is here find a staff member and they will direct them to the delivery room.”
Severus was levitated onto the gurney and then a team of healers was escorting him away.
Remus shakingly fed the potion to Harry and Cora, pacing until Narcissa showed up with Draco in her arms.
Then Remus ran off, locating a medi-witch he barked at her, “Where is Andromeda?”
“Birth Healer Tonks is in delivery room three.”
Remus growled, “Show me!”
The Medi-witch escorted him and then cast special charms on him to make it safe for him to enter.
When he entered the delivery room Andromeda was elbows deep into Severus…
She pulled out a baby, placing it into another witch’s arms,
“Dorcus! Tie the cord! Emily! Bring that incubator over here!”
Andromeda turned putting her hands back in Severus’ abdomen.
Remus hugged the wall, trembling.
He wanted to comfort Severus but he was worried about getting in the way. He knew that one of his daughters was weak…
He hated to see blood on Severus, and Moony growled to tear Andromeda to shreds for hurting his mate but he couldn’t touch her if he wanted his mate and his babies to live….
Then the last baby was out.
Andromeda snapped, “David! Seal up Severus. I’m going to work on the little one.”
Then Andromeda was casting spells at the tiny girl, “It’s her lungs and her heart!”
Remus fell to his knees. “Merlin! Lily please don’t take her with you…”
Then there were strange things attached to the clear bassinet that ‘Emily’ pushed over to Andromeda.
His little girl was in trouble…
It was thirty minutes before Andromeda wiped her forehead. “Thank Salazar.”
Remus asked quietly. “Will she be okay?”
“She’s only 1.35 kg Remus. She’ll need serious potions and charms therapy to stimulate her heart and lung growth.” Andromeda said tiredly. “She’s a fighter, that’s why she’s still with us.”
“What about the other one?” Remus asked nervously.
“2.177 kg.” the healer that Remus thought was Dorcas proclaimed.
The witch then was presenting Remus with baby girl a dark peach fuzz hair, who was dressed in a nappy, a white bodysuit and wrapped in a green blanket.
Cora had pale blond hair after her blood adoption and it had darkened as she grew older…
“You’re a little greedy aren’t you?” Remus chuckled to hide his worry, “You must be Sera. Welcome to the world Seraphina Lillias.”
The baby girl just looked him with Severus’ familiar penetrating gaze.
Unlike Cora’s, Sera’s eyes were a colourless grey rather then Cora’s ice blue that turned honey by the time she was six-weeks.
Sera seemed fine but so small…
Remus swallowed, “Severus?”
“He’s fine, we had to sedate him. Not uncommon with deliveries like this. Once we get him properly cleaned up, he’ll be moved back to his room.” David said with a weary smile.
“What about Nemia?” Remus asked, the ‘fighter’ had to his little lioness.
“She’ll need special care.” Andromeda said gently. “If Seraphina continues to mature as expected she’ll be safe to discharge in a few days. I’m not sure about Nemia but I’ll keep you informed.”
Remus crumpled.
At least she was alive…

It was a month before Andromeda declared that Nemia was healthy enough to go home.
By then Severus had been in St. Mungos’ Maternity/Paternity wing for six weeks.
Severus’ milk had come in properly thanks to special potions and a diet that Andromeda had given to Severus as well as massages she’d taught them both as soon as she admitted him.
They flooed home, with Severus taking Harry, Narcissa had Cora, Lucius Sera and Remus had Nemia…
It was good to be home…
Andromeda and Ted had visited Harry and Sera often to check thier progress as well as tell them about Nemia.
It had been two weeks before Severus was allowed to see Nemia even though he had Wizarding photos and Remus spent as much time with Nemia as he was allowed.
Nemia was delicate like Harry but in a different way…
They were so grateful to have their family home…

A/n: Twin-to-Twin Transference is a real condition affecting about 20% of identical twins who share a placenta. It's the technical term for when one twin is taking more nutrients then the other. It can be dangerous and will likely result in emergency deliveries like this one. The main difference is that my Andromeda is savvy enough to fix it. It is much harder in real life to do so. In reality the babies would spend more time in the hospital and BOTH would have been in NICU. The stress of Harry's kidnapping likely didn't help and neither did Severus' poor health before; stress and the mother's malnutrition increase not only the likelihood but the severity of this problem. Neither Remus or Moony meant for this to happen, Andromeda would have counselled them to wait until Harry was safe and she decided Severus was healthy enough for pregnancy but that didn't happy. Planned pregnancy is all well and good but be sure that you are healthy before trying....
