Chapter 23
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi, who I couldn't work without anymore. Thanks, Tenchi!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Watching a vision of who he knew was Regulus crouch down in front of Kreacher in a cave that was quickly swarming with what looked like zombies, Harry let out a keening sound as it was the only thing he could utter at this point from the pain that encompassed his whole body. Unable to let go of Kreacher, he watched as Regulus put his hands on the elf's shoulders then said, “Take that and hide it, Kreacher. The one that can open it will show up at some point. When he does, it'll set in motion more than one thing. Once it's open and activated, give it to my son. He's going to need it as it'll help protect him.”
Seeing Kreacher nod then assure the man he would, Harry felt something warm and wet dribble down his forehead, while panting heavily from the pain this was producing. Though his eyes were open, something he knew from the stinging in them as the sweat now pouring off him, dripped into them, he couldn't see anything beyond the vision playing out. He saw Regulus smile sadly, then say, “Tell Sirius the prophecy is about him, not me. Mother made a mistake. It was always him. She just couldn't see that through her hatred of him is all. He is the one that is the Black to stand beside the Seer and help change our world. That's something he has to know, Kreacher. And you need to help him.” Seeing the elf start to stammer, he shook his head and said, “It's meant to be. All of this. You need to help him and watch over my son. I won't be around to do that, so I need you to help.”“Master Regulus needs to come with Kreacher. He needs to get out of this cave,” Harry heard the elf say in a panicked tone as he watched the zombie-like creatures approaching them.“I can't,” Regulus said sadly with a shake of his head. “There is something I still have to do before I can leave. This locket—people will read what it is wrong. I have to replace it before I can go. And I won't have the strength to fight off the Infirni once I do. Get it out of here, Kreacher, and make sure it's safe.” Seeing the elf with tears in his eyes but nodding, Harry watched as Regulus straightened up and clutched his wand tightly. Quietly, he added, “Tell her I love her, Kreacher. With all my heart. And if there was a way I could get out of this and go to her, I would.”Lying there, in agony, Harry watched Kreacher pop away then Regulus do something or other before being taken by the Inferni, as he called them. Vision clearing, he looked at the elf that was standing there in front of him, wide-eyed, clutching onto some kind of locket. Though he could hear all kinds of commotion around him, especially from Sirius and Lucius who were in agony, Harry focused on the elf. Pushing himself up the best he could, eyes streaming from the pain, he said, voice uneven, “Give me the locket.”Looking at the boy lying there, Kreacher nodded, eyes wide, then held out the locket in a trembling hand. The snake was right. Mister Harry was the one. He knew that now.Taking the locket, eyes screwing shut at the visions it produced, ones of Regulus and Narcissa that were highly personal, Harry held it tightly as his nose started to gush blood once more. Focusing on the visions, he heard the hiss again. It told him to open the locket. Though he didn't want to, knowing more pain was coming if he did, Harry hissed 'open' in Parseltongue then let out a scream of pain when it unfastened and his scar began to bleed profusely then his eyes felt like they were on fire. Once that happened, different visions began to take over, ones far older than anything to do with Regulus, that of the Seers of the past.
Standing, watching what was going on with Harry, completely horrified, Narcissa and Draco weren't sure what to do. Remus was trying to get Lucius, who seemed hit with whatever was going on just as hard as Sirius, over to the two of them to help alleviate whatever was going on.
Hands flying to her mouth as Harry's scar began to trickle blood, she then began to stammer when his nose started to gush blood just as bad as the bit with the goblet. This time, Sirius and Lucius' did as well. However, when poor Harry's scar seemed to break open and bleed as badly as his nose, she summoned an elf then had the creature go to fetch Severus, telling him it was an emergency. Her eyes widened as the scar seemed to start to writhe, the lightning bolt shape he was so known for seeming to flesh out and become a serpent of some kind. However, her eyes locked with Harry's from there as they changed. Oh, they stayed the same color of green they always were, but the pupils became slits, like that of a snake. It was then he began to hiss something in Parseltongue. Not sure what to do, she went over to Remus when the man took a step back after sitting Lucius on the settee by Harry, his own eyes wide at what he was seeing. Stammering, she said, “I sent for Severus. How much help he's going to be, I don't know. This is bad.”Giving a shaky nod, Remus just stared at what was going on, not sure what to do beyond what he already was. However, he did have the forethought to send one of the elves off for some of the pain killing draughts, sure they were going to be needed when this was over. Looking at the serpent that was now emblazoned on Harry's forehead, almost glowing with a fire-like light that seemed to surround it, and his now snake-like eyes, he muttered, “Oh, Merlin! This has to be the final power manifesting.”“What do we do?” Narcissa asked, clutching onto Draco, who came to stand beside her.Sighing, Remus shook his head then said, “As hard as it is to watch, we need to let it run its course. We'll deal with whatever it is afterwards.”
Clutching onto Harry, Sirius gritted his teeth against the pain that rocked him. This was worse than anything that he had experienced to date when it came to this mess. Watching the visions play out, he felt uncomfortable over some of what he saw, but wondered about the prophecy his brother talked about. Feeling the pain from Harry bleeding off, his eyes felt like they had been set on fire and his forehead like someone had sliced it open with a hot knife. Oh, this was bad! Nothing he was doing was even dimming the pain. When Lucius joined them and held onto Harry as well it didn't even help.
Concentrating, trying to breathe through the white-hot agony, he listened as that hissing voice he heard before in that daydream-type thing showed up once more as what seemed like a vision from the very distant past played out of many people with the wing serpent walking through their time as it changed around them.
Though he didn't think it would do any good, Lucius fumbled with his wand trying to conjure a towel to stymie the bleeding. He couldn't manage that though. He was in too much pain himself to manifest the spell. Breathing deeply, eyes screwed tightly shut, he didn't know what to do here. Even the bit with the goblet wasn't this bad. It was even worse than the Crucio he had experienced a few times. He was damned sure that his eyes were melting and his forehead was being flailed from the pain he was getting. The visions that came along with it weren't something he wanted to see either.
Leaning his head against Harry's holding onto him as tightly as he could, he muttered, though his voice was uneven, “Just breathe, it'll be over soon.” He wasn't sure of that, but he hoped like hell it was as he wasn't sure how much more any of them could take of this nightmare.
Looking at the ancient man with the long white beard, one far more impressive than Dumbledore's, after the visions ended, Harry didn't know what to say.
Holding onto his staff, Merlin reached over and patted the young man on the shoulder gently then said, “It's time. You are the one to guide our world, Harry. And you will be the last of the Seers from this line. What you see and set in motion will fix what is needed to set it on the path to sustain it. When those visions come, you'll know. Trust them and my friend.” Moving his shoulders, he had the winged serpent that lounged there slither onto the young man's. “He's older than my line and knows what to do. Trust him. Let him guide you with what is necessary. Your two are with you as well. Two Purebloods have always helped the Seer. This time it is the Malfoy and Black line. There have been others. You will show so many they were wrong. My Seer was always a Muggle-born or Half-Blood, always. So many in our world now need reminded again that true power doesn't come from bloodlines or heritage, but what is within. You'll prove that.”Not sure what to say, Harry shook his head, glancing at the snake that was now lounging on his shoulders, hissing words of reassurance.“The worst is over,” Merlin assured him with a gentle smile. “There are challenges still coming, no doubt, but this ends the worst of it. You now have the full powers you need. The locket given to the Slytherin line to protect was opened and then activated. It also will give you the shields you need to protect yourself from everyone and the visions you've been getting. Be mindful of your instinct and what it says when it comes to dealing with them. That will help you hold off the worst.” Looking up then appearing to glance around, he said, “Lucius, the time has come to start telling Harry what's going on. You need to do that so he can be prepared to help where he's needed.” Hearing a response from the man, Merlin looked back at Harry and said, gently, “Trust Lucius. He won't betray you. You need the help from that faction, Harry. He'll protect you. The madness is gone. Despite what Albus professes, he can feel love and understands what it means. He's proving that. Ask Draco. The love Draco feels for him is returned and he would never harm the young man. Let him help you. I wouldn't steer you wrong.”“Who is it?” Harry asked, though he was sure he knew and that made him highly uncomfortable.“You know,” Merlin told him with a smile. “I don't need to tell you. Just trust me, Harry, and Lucius. You know why Severus is doing what he is. He wouldn't put you in danger either. That's all you need to worry about. Let the man make amends. He will. No one, anywhere, will harm you with his protection. Let him. Let him talk to you through the connection and assure you of that. From now on, you never have a fear of someone misleading you because of an agenda. You'll know when they are lying to try to lead you astray. Just trust that. All you have to do.” Glancing up again, he said, “Sirius, trust him. You have my word he won't harm either of you. Between you and Lucius, Harry is safe. Just trust in that.” Hearing that response, he nodded then said, gently, “This part now ends, Harry. Give Draco his locket then get some rest. Let Severus do what he wants when he comes over. It'll prove to everyone what they need to know. Sleep, Harry. You'll feel better tomorrow and can partially activate the bond. My companion is now with you and will find his body soon. Trust him as well.” Giving the young man a pat on the shoulder, he then vanished.Looking around, Harry shook his head, not sure what to do. Sighing, he shut his eyes, feeling nauseated from the pain, hoping that would go away soon.
Stepping into the room where everyone was, Severus was nervous. He wasn't sure what to expect here, just that it was an emergency of some kind. Stopping, eyes wide at what he was seeing, he now didn't know what to do. Moving over to Narcissa and Lupin, he asked, quietly, “The final power?”
“We think so,” Remus said with a nod of his head. “We're—we're letting it play out and not stepping in. I don't think there is anything we can do to help, Severus.”“I don't either,” Severus said, shaking his head as he looked between the scar that was now a snake of some kind and the snake-like eyes. “Merlin,” he muttered softly. “We'll wait until it's over to see what we can do here. I brought some stronger pain draughts. I think they're going to be needed.” Looking at Narcissa, he said, “Get the elves to bring some towels and wet flannels to clean them up when this is done.”Nodding, pleased to have something to do rather than just stand there and not be able to do anything, she sent the elves off to fetch what was going to be needed.
The first thing Harry did when the vision ended was lean forward and throw up all over the floor. That was, bar none, the worst thing he had ever lived through and he never wanted to do it again. Groaning, still in agony, he swiped at the tears and blood on his face, shaking badly. Though suffering greatly, he blinked when he realized that for the first time since this whole nightmare started at Hogwarts there was no 'noise'. He wasn't picking up on anything. There were no visions of any kind at all from the others in the room. Pleased with that, he panted heavily, trying to get himself together. Looking down at the now open locket that he was still clutching onto, he then held it out to the wide-eyed Kreacher in a trembling hand. Voice uneven, he said, “Give it to Draco. It's his.”
Taking the locket gently in two shaking hands, Kreacher nodded, backing away.Sitting there, panting heavily, still in tremendous pain, Sirius muttered, “Thank fucking Merlin, it's over.” Holding Harry as closely as he could, he just shook his head, though that didn't help the pain levels any.Rubbing a trembling hand over his face, Lucius swiped at the blood that was under his nose, not sure what to do here. Like Black, he was damned grateful it was over, but was startled by some of what he saw from it. For the first time, he got the full vision, if that’s what it was, and didn’t know what to do, though he planned to follow what it said. Looking up, he said to those standing there, “Give me something to help get us cleaned up and for pain.”Stepping forward, Narcissa handed the towels and flannels to Lucius. Looking between the three as she set the elves on cleaning up, she asked, tone quiet, “Is it over?”“It's over,” Lucius said, taking them from her. “We, all three, need something for pain. And you might want to find something for nausea for Harry. This was—bad, really bad.” Then he handed a couple of them over to the shaking Black and went to work on cleaning Harry up as he was in the worst shape.Leaning back, eyes shut, Harry slumped against Sirius as Lucius started cleaning him up. Shaking badly, he finally uttered, “The visions are gone. I've got quiet for the first time since it started.”Eyes widening at that as he worked on getting rid of the worst of the mess, not trusting himself yet to wield his wand, Lucius asked, voice still slightly uneven, “Are you sure?”“There's nothing,” Harry told him in a weary voice. “I'm not getting anything from anyone in the room.”Working on cleaning himself up, Sirius said, taking the draughts Snape held out for him, “That must be the shields the vision talked about. About bloody time!”Crouching down in front of the settee where the three were, Severus asked, looking intently at Potter, “You're picking up nothing from me?”“Nothing,” Harry said with a shake of his head after downing the potions that Sirius had passed to him. Not feeling that instinct kicking in, he reached out and grabbed the man's arm. It set off nothing. Grinning, he said, “Nothing at all.”Though apprehensive when the young man touched him, Severus was pleased when it set nothing off. “Good,” he said. Looking at Potter's face, he could see that the scar, though swollen, no longer resembled a snake and was back to its normal appearance. The snake-like eyes were back to his normal ones as well. That meant those transformations probably meant something else. Pulling out his wand, he asked, “You said something about shields?” He asked Black.“The vision mentioned shields to protect himself,” Lucius said, downing his own pain killers and feeling better after he did.Nodding, Severus said, keeping his tone mild, “Let me see what I can determine about that. It's not like in the lessons, Mr. Potter. It won't hurt a bit.”Remembering what was said by Merlin, Harry nodded, leaning back and shutting his eyes. All he wanted to do now was sleep for a couple of days.Casting the spell to test the shields, what Severus encountered was like the smooth wall of a mountain with flames licking up from the bottom. Hearing a deadly hiss that said to back off, he found himself being blown backwards into the wall on the far side of the room. Standing shakily, he shook his head, wide-eyed. He had never, ever, come across anything like that before in his life. Looking at the boy who was just resting there, he brushed off Lupin trying to check him over then said, tone slightly awed, “I've never encountered a shield like that in my entire life.”“Any chance of anything getting through it?” Remus asked, pleased with this part of the events.“No chance,” Severus said with a firm shake of his head. Lowering his voice, he added, “I have a feeling if I were to keep trying I'd end up injured. There is something there, something that sounds almost like a snake, protecting him. I won't risk trying it again.”Leaning heavily against Sirius, Harry reached up and rubbed a trembling hand over his face. Though now muddled from whatever Snape had given him, his mind was working through all that was said in that vision. There was so much there to sort out, but he couldn't right now. He needed sleep, all there was to it. The day had been a rotten one anyway, something that was bad enough, and this just made it worse. Not opening his eyes, he said, voice uneven, “I want to go to bed.”“Good idea,” Sirius said, his own eyes shut as he tried to work with all that had just bombarded him.Rubbing a shaky hand over his face, Lucius looked around and said, “We need rest and I think we're all going to need help getting up the stairs. If Severus can touch Harry without setting anything off, he needs to give us a hand here.” Shaking his head, he admitted, “I'm not going to be able to navigate those stairs without help myself.”The three other adults in the room quickly went over to help the trio on the sofa. As they led them out, Draco stood there, looking down at the locket Kreacher had brought over to him. Quietly, he asked the elf, “This was my father's?”“Master Regulus wanted you to have it,” Kreacher told him. “Put it on. It'll protect you.”Slipping it over his head with slightly shaking hands, Draco looked down at it where it finally rested on his chest. Fingering the locket, he smiled slightly and nodded. He wasn't sure what it was supposed to do, but he knew it was meant to protect him. He would wear it for that reason alone. Looking at the elf, he asked, “What was my father like?”“Master Regulus was a good master and kind,” Kreacher told him then began to tell Master Regulus' son about his father.
