Chapter 22
Concentrating on what Lucius was showing him, Harry nodded. This seemed easy enough to him, so he gave it a try, pleased when his jeans seemed like they automatically ironed themselves. That spell was great! Seated on the bed in their room about an hour or so before supper, the three of them were continuing on what they had started the day before; general household-y type spells. Sirius and Lucius had been working with him off and on all day with them, something he actually really liked. He had learned plenty so far and liked what they did. At this point, they were working towards some of the personal hygiene type that were intermingled with the household ones, like the ironing. Chuckling, he said, “I picked that one up really easily!”
“You did,” Lucius admitted with a smirk. “As it built on one spell we already taught you, that's not surprising. Which means we can press on.” Looking at Harry's hair, still wet from his shower, he said, “How about the one to dry your hair. That's an immeasurable help. I'll show you how it works then wet your hair again so you can try.”“That I'd like to learn,” Harry nodded, waiting.Taking care to make sure he did the wand movement slowly and deliberately so Harry could take note, Lucius cast the spell. Looking at Harry's hair when it was done, he blinked then groaned as Sirius laughed. Oh, the spell worked just fine, the problem came in that it made Harry's unruly hair stick up all the more. Sighing, he shook his head then admitted, “That might not have been the best suggestion.” Conjuring a mirror for Harry to see the results, he added, “While we'll teach you the charm, I don't think using it on that mop is a good idea.”Groaning at the rat's nest on his head, Harry chuckled, “No, I don't need help with it being made worse than normal. That made it far worse.”“It did,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “Let Lucius teach you that charm, then we'll see if we can use a few we know that might get it to where the mess will lay down better.”“That we can do,” Lucius agreed while wetting down Harry's hair again then walked him through how to do the spell. As with the others they had worked on up until now, Harry had it down after a couple of tries. Good.Once Harry was finished, Lucius began to cast some charms he knew, ones he used on his own hair to smooth it down, brow furrowed. So far, nothing worked. Though they took for a minute or so, his hair then popped right back up to where it had been. Huffing after running through everything he knew, he said, “Well, that didn't work well. Your hair appears resistant to any kind of spells to make it lie down.”Laughing again, Sirius shook his head. “Like I keep telling everyone; James cursed him with it!”“He did something,” Lucius told him in a distracted tone as he looked at the mop of hair, hearing Harry chuckle as well. “Let me think,” he sighed, trying to come up with something that might work. After a couple of minutes, he asked in a distracted tone, “Do you object to having longer hair, Harry? It might work to tame the unruliness enough that I can get it to lay flat.”“I don't care,” Harry told him with a shrug. “It doesn't seem to grow much anyway.”Happy that he could try this, Lucius cast a hair growing spell. Immediately, Harry's hair grew to shoulder length, the fringe of it growing to his chin. However, it was still standing up just like it had before. Sighing because it didn't improve the situation much, Lucius was hopeful that the spells would work now. Casting them, he huffed when they got the same result.Chuckling, figuring out what was happening, Harry brushed the fringe out of his face. “This part needs to go, Lucius.”“Yes, it does,” Lucius admitted, quickly casting the charm to trim the fringe perfectly.Seeing Harry look into the mirror Lucius conjured, Sirius said, “You look better with longer hair, honestly. It doesn't lay down flat, but its better this way than shorter. At least it's doing it a tad.”“It is,” Harry said, reaching up to run his fingers through his newly elongated locks. “Maybe we can make it look like it's supposed to stick up or something? Not that I care, honestly, as I'm used to it doing whatever it wants.”“That might work well,” Lucius said, sending for a jar of Sleekezy's that he had in the bathroom. However, before he could go to work, the knob on the bedroom turned and it began to open. Not sure what was going on, as no one should be able to get in, he quickly turned into Hobbes and started hissing, hopping into Harry's lap.Quickly vanishing anything that was Lucius' and still out back to where it belonged, Sirius' head whipped in the direction of the door then he leveled his wand at it. He didn't know what was going on, but he didn't like it. However, he rolled his eyes when he saw the muttering Kreacher come in. Lowering his wand, he sighed then asked, “What do you want, Kreacher? Shouldn't you be cleaning somewhere else? I've made it clear that I don't want you in here.”Muttering to himself, ignoring Sirius, Kreacher then stopped and looked around. Though he knew about the other elves that had taken over most of his duties, he was confused by the size of this room. As far as he knew, from what he overheard, only his hated master and Harry Potter were staying in here. Yet the room was huge, having far more space than the two of them needed. It also seemed like there were accommodations for a third person in here, but he knew that only the two were up here. Brow furrowed, he muttered faster, trying to figure out what was going on.This wasn't good and he knew it. Teeth grinding, Sirius snarled, “Get out, Kreacher! Go about your business elsewhere.” As Kreacher muttered about all kinds of bits, he sure as hell didn't need the old elf muttering about this around anyone that might come into the house.Ignoring his master, as that wasn't a direct order, still muttering, Kreacher began to explore the room, curious about what was going on.“Fuck,” Sirius mumbled, bailing off the bed. He planned to do something about the elf while explaining to Lucius what the issue was.Taking it in, knowing where Walburga's leanings were and how she had favored his wife, Lucius told him telepathically, “Let me handle it.”Not wanting to reveal anything and unsure what Lucius was up to, Sirius was reluctant to allow him to handle anything as it might end up putting everything they were doing in danger. Sputtering, he tried talking Lucius out of it quickly, but he didn't listen.Hopping off Harry's lap and strutting to stand in front of the elf, Lucius let out a loud meow then transformed back. Crossing his arms over his chest, a sneer on his face, he looked down at the now stunned elf and said, a tone of disdain weaving through it, “It is not a house elf's place to explore when their master tells them to tend to their job, Kreacher. Your mistress would be most displeased with you.”Sputtering, eyes overly wide, Kreacher looked up at Mr. Lucius, not sure what to say. Mr. Lucius was in Grimmauld Place and in his hated master's room! “Mr. L-l-l-lucius?” He finally stammered out.“Yes,” Lucius huffed, rolling his eyes. “That's rather obvious, isn't it, Kreacher?” Glaring down at the elf, he hissed, “You tarnish the House of Black with not only your appearance, but how you treat its master! I have seen your neglect, Kreacher! It displeases me greatly. If you were an elf at the House of Malfoy, you would receive clothes. As I am bonded with Sirius, I think I should consider doing just that. It's my thought that Sirius wouldn't object much.”Stuttering, Kreacher fell to his knees, “No, Mr. Lucius! Kreacher will be a good elf!” Mr. Lucius being bonded to his hated master changed many things in his mind. That meant there was more going on than he knew and he had to adjust to it. Master Sirius must have hidden plenty for this to happen. From all he knew, no one knew Mr. Lucius was here and thought he was just Harry Potter's cat.“You better,” Lucius snarled. “Your ranting and raving is not welcome anymore, Kreacher. I am now around and you will treat Sirius and Harry with respect or I will give you clothes. Anything you might think to pull will be moot. I and those I associate with, including Narcissa, know what is going on over here. Sirius is not the blood traitor you think he is. Even if he was, it isn't your place to comment on it. You serve the House of Black. He is the head of the House of Black. You will serve him to the best of your ability, or you will find yourself clothed. That means keeping his secrets, including about my presence. Do I make myself clear, Kreacher?” Stopping, Lucius waited, glaring down at the cringing elf.Bowing repeatedly, Kreacher told him, “Kreacher understands and will be a good elf, keeping Master Sirius' secrets! He swears, Mr. Lucius!”“You better,” Sirius added, pleased with what Lucius did. It hadn't been something he thought of, but it worked perfectly. “Lucius is as much your master as I am. So is Harry. You will listen to them. If you don't behave, I'm going to let Lucius handle you.” Even with the elf saying he would obey, Sirius didn’t believe it, so it was best to let Lucius attend to it. It was his hope that this would keep the damned elf in line enough that they didn't have to worry about him.Lifting his chin, glaring at the elf, Lucius told him, “Now, go clean yourself up and look respectable, as a house elf should. You will not cause problems for any of us. Once you do that, go help the other elves. There is still much to be done in the house. Off with you.” With that, he gave a dismissive wave and waited.“Yes, Master Lucius,” Kreacher told him, bowing repeatedly before popping away.“Good job, Lucius,” Sirius grinned. “I didn't think of having you step in.”Looking smug, Lucius nodded at the compliment. “I assumed it would work with how attached the damnable elf was to your mother. This way he isn't an issue at least. He knows me enough that it's doubtful he would pull his normal stunts where I'm concerned.” Walking over, he took a seat on the bed once more. “I'll start having him tend to some minor duties for me to reinforce what we want.” Settling back, he said, “Now, where were we?”“My hair,” Harry chuckled, shaking his head, though happy the elf was finally not a problem.“Ah, yes, that's what we were doing.” Grabbing the jar that he had sent for, Lucius put some on his palms, rubbing them together. “I think we can manage and it won't take you much to recreate it each morning.” Then he went to work trying to create the meant to be tousled look that would calm some of the hair sticking up while making it appear far more fashionable. While he did that, he glanced at Harry's glasses. From what he could remember, they were the same frames as he had seen on him his first year at Hogwarts. “Not to be nosy, but when is the last time you had your eyes checked, Harry? If I remember correctly, those are the same glasses you've had since your first year.”“Not since before going to Hogwarts,” Harry told him in a distracted tone as he watched what Lucius was doing in the mirror, actually liking how his hair was turning out. It looked great.Stopping what he was doing, Lucius looked at Harry then glanced over his shoulder at Sirius, whose brow was furrowed. Going back to working on his hair, he said, “I think we need to arrange for you to see an Optometrist. You're supposed to have your eyes checked once a year and get your prescription adjusted accordingly.” Smirking, he added, “And I think new, more fashionable frames are in order as well. Either that or get contacts as well. Those might do better by you as they can do many things with contacts nowadays.”“That's something we'll arrange,” Sirius told them before Harry could say a word. “In fact, fairly fast as I'm not sure how long it will take to get the glasses.” Nudging Harry, he said, “That's something we want to keep up on, Harry, as we don't want your eyesight getting worse because of a bad prescription.”“Very true,” Lucius added, before Harry could say anything, though it didn't look like he was going to argue about it. “As we're on a strict timeline for getting out, we need to make sure that it's handled before we do that. Once in hiding, we'll attend to it other ways if it comes to that.”“That's fine,” Harry said amicably, watching the mirror. “I probably need new ones anyway. Hermione's repaired these more times than I can count.”“Which tells me you probably do need new ones as Muggle plastics don't tend to like magic much, probably aiding in them breaking easier,” Lucius sighed. Finishing up, he looked at the hair and nodded. “That looks far better. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination as the Sleekezy's isn't the best for the job, but it's much better.” Looking at Harry, who was gazing in the mirror grinning, he asked, “What do you think, Harry?”“I like it!” Harry admitted, reaching up to run his fingers through his hair. This was the first time in his life that he could remember it actually really looking good. “I have a question, though.” Seeing Lucius motion for him to go on, he asked, “Would Muggle goop work better? They have like styling gels that are meant to hold it firmly in place so it doesn't move much. Hermione said that stuff you used is more to tame it. I remember that as she used it on her hair for the Yule Ball.”“Got me there,” Sirius chuckled, reaching up to run his fingers through Harry's hair. “What do you think, Lucius?”“It may,” Lucius admitted with a nod. “I'm sure you can find some to use. That or say something to Molly to have Miss Granger pick some out for you. I'm sure they wouldn't mind and Miss Granger might have an idea of what would work better. I say we go that route. If you can find it, I'm sure Narcissa can come up with a comparable Magical product. As this won't take more than you using it while it's wet and running your fingers through your hair, I don't see it as a hardship to tend to after getting out of the shower.”“That was dead easy,” Harry said, still grinning. “Something I can take care of.” Looking at Lucius, he said, “I like it. Thanks!”“I like it as well,” Sirius admitted. Holding Harry close with one arm, he asked Lucius, “Any idea about places to get glasses for him that are not only good, but fast? It's not something I've dealt with before.”“I know a couple,” Lucius told him with a nod, reaching out to run his fingers through Harry's hair as well. “I'll give you the names before you go downstairs. If you pass them on to Remus or Alastor, I'm sure they can easily set up an appointment. With the ruse we are playing, you'll need bodies to go with you anyway.”“We'll go with that,” Sirius told him, happy with this. “Good thinking, Lucius. This isn't something I thought of, honestly. And it is one we need to take care of.”Smirking at the compliment, Lucius nodded. “Right—let's press on, shall we? There are a few others we can take care of before going downstairs.” Then he began telling Harry the theory behind the freshening charms.
“Harry! Your hair looks wonderful!” Tonks said with a huge grin as she gazed across the table at him as he took a seat.
“I do concur,” Remus smiled at the longer hair and how it was actually somewhat tamed.Laughing, Sirius gave his sheepish looking godson a nudge. “He likes it, so that's all that matters,” he finally shrugged. Pressing on before anyone could embarrass Harry more, as his godson was already flushed at the compliments, he said, “I have something we're going to need some help with.” Then he began to explain about the glasses. Sighing, he admitted, “It's not something any of us thought of, honestly. So, I want to attend to it quickly. I have the names of a couple places. If one of you would see about setting up an appointment for Harry, we'll work on something to get him there.”“Give me the names and I'll go take care of it today,” Alastor told him as he took a sip from his flask. “I'll see if I can arrange it for early in the morning as it's not as busy in the Alley at that time. Then I'll line up volunteers to go along. I'm sure that Fred and George won't mind us Floo'ing into their shop to go from there. That should make it safer for us.”Passing the slip of parchment over to Alastor that had the names on it, Sirius told him, “Do what you think is best. We'll deal accordingly after you set something up.” Looking at Bill, who was chuckling as Harry was feeding Hobbes part of his food, he snorted then grinned, “Before you go, Bill, I need to get with you alone. I have a mission for your mum and Hermione.” Not only was he going to have them pick up the goop that Harry mentioned, but he and Lucius learned that Harry hadn't been taught to shave. Though they could easily attend to getting him what he needed, Sirius thought that would be a good present Molly and Arthur could grab for his birthday. After all, they had dealt with that when it came to all their own sons, so they would know what worked best. Lucius had gone through this with Draco, but it was a simple enough gift, and not expensive, that they could easily get their hands on.“I'll make certain to pull you aside before I go,” Bill told him, sure it wasn't anything rotten or bad.“Now, I do have to ask,” Remus chuckled, looking at Harry's hair. “Not that I don't like the new style, mind you, I'm just curious about the why behind it.”Laughing, Sirius nudged the chuckling Harry then began to explain the adventure with hair drying charms. Shaking his head, he said, “He won't be using those, trust me! Even with it longer, it still makes it worse!”Letting out a deep laugh, Kingsley added, “Well, at least you now know better and Harry has a much nicer hair style out of it.”“True,” Sirius chuckled, nudging the grinning Harry as he ate and fed Hobbes. Digging into his own food, he began to ask about what was going on. That way he could prepare for whatever.
Lying in bed that night around midnight, Sirius groaned and shifted around a little. Holding Harry closer, he rested his head against his godson's. He had woken from another of those nightmares that plagued him about his time in Azkaban and all the Dementors brought up while there. Even though it had been a few years since his escape, they were still happening. Though they had lessened, to a degree over the years, he still got them. And they made it hard to sleep at times. It was something he was used to, as well as not getting a full night's sleep because of them, however that didn't mean he liked the feelings they produced when he was yanked awake from them.
Giving Harry a squeeze, listening to his godson's deep breathing then hearing the same from Lucius, he smiled a little as he felt the two shift slightly. Though it was odd, he noticed when one shifted in their sleep, the other tended to as well so that the three of them were still touching all the time. Though strange, he liked it. Feeling Lucius give him a pat where his hand rested on his hip, Sirius sighed. The man was still asleep, obviously, but seemed to sense his 'distress', at least in some way. As strange as it sounded, that did help calm the emotional response from the dream. He wasn't like Harry in that he needed the protection his godson did, but Lucius, with all his power and clout, seemed to help him as well when it came to those dreams and their aftermath. No, he didn't know why that was, it just did. It was probably the bond, of course, at least in some way. Part of it probably also came from how the man had helped orchestrate getting him freed and was working on making damned sure that both he and Harry were protected the best he could manage. It sure as hell helped! Somewhere in him he also thought it might be that anyone foolish enough to try something really stupid with him and Harry would have to deal with Lucius as well. With how powerful, magically, Lucius was, that meant that they wouldn't come out on the winning end. It wasn't since school and his friends that he had anyone that would go that far to protect him. After all, he was damned good at defending himself and making sure he stayed safe. Just—well, it felt good to know that there was someone that had his back in the way Lucius would. He would do the same for Lucius, of course, but it was a nice feeling after all the rottenness that he had gone through.Shutting his eyes, he snuggled up closer to Harry, feeling the two shift around once more so they were pressed together tightly, he smiled once again. This felt good and so right. And it helped, it really did. Already the dreams, something that were a mix of memories as well, seemed to be little more than ghosts in his mind that were fading out, the feelings from them being replaced by something soothing that seemed to come from the two in bed with him. Good. It helped. In the past, the dreams would have continued on each time he went to sleep. Now he knew they wouldn't. The one would be all he had and the rest would be normal about other bits, probably dealing with Harry and Lucius. That was fine too as those tended to be the pleasant sort.Drifting away, he had a smile on his face as a dream about Harry, Lucius as Hobbes and Padfoot all mucking about together began to start. It was a fun one that banished whatever ghosts of the last dream still lingered. Perfect.
