Chapter 23
Mornings in the Malfoy household always had a set pattern, something Lucius had adored all his life as he knew what to expect, do and how to handle what came in. It gave him continuity, even when life was at its most hectic.
The first of his routines was that he was up and ready to start the day before Narcissa and Draco. His father had done the same with his mother, so this held over for him. It was something he liked as he had time alone to deal with whatever issues happened before the two were around. This was also a time of solitude to give him time to focus and get ready to tackle the day, with whatever issues it might bring. Such a practice always helped, in plenty of ways.Second was that the elves always had the Prophet and tea ready for him. This was an always thing. Lately, he thought he might need stomach soother when it came to reading the Prophet, what with some of what it contained, but he held off on that. It just tended to leave him with a sour stomach, but he dealt accordingly and pressed on.Third, the elves had the mail sorted and waiting on him. While elves could be strange about plenty, the ones in the Malfoy household were competent enough that they knew how to sort what was most important and leave it beside his plate. This also gave him time to look through what was there so he knew just what he had to handle first. As he was an early riser, it also gave him the opportunity to tend to the worst before he went off to work. Well, that wasn't a factor anymore. The mere thought that he'd been fired from his job at the Ministry was enough to cause him issues and more stomach problems. It wasn't like he needed the money that came from the job. No, that wasn't the case. What he liked was the information it gained him and how he was well placed to aid the cause. The job—well, it hurt a tad in doing some when it came to the information, but didn't change other areas. He was dealing accordingly, all he could do.Those factors had always helped him stay on an even keel as they were a given, no matter what was going on. Even when traveling, it held true. There was something comforting in keeping habits such as these and it gave him a foundation to deal with whatever was thrown at him. That was until today. After taking a seat and sipping at his first cup of tea, Lucius sighed as he read through what was in the Prophet. More of the same, of course, but he was keeping a wary eye on what Rufus was putting in place as it affected plenty, including himself and his family. The time to be circumspect was upon them, so he needed aware of just what was going on to manage. After going through the rag and reading salient points, he marked a few articles, like he always did, to go back and reread so he could see what else he could find in them for not only self-protection, but to aid the cause. With that done, he set the paper aside then began going through what seemed like a small mountain of letters.Sipping more tea, he sighed as he sorted. Some of what was here, though it needed handled, could wait until after he ate. Those he sent to his study. Others he wanted to look over, as he wasn't sure what he was dealing with. Most of what was contained in them were about investments. With what was happening in their world, it was an issue he had to keep on top of to make sure it didn't put a dent in the Malfoy fortune. While he doubted much of it would truly hurt him, he wanted to make sure. However, as he got to the bottom of the stack, there were several letters that had his brow furrowing. One was a missive from Gringotts and it was thick. As it wasn't the time to get his monthly statements, something that wasn't this large anyway, he wasn't sure what it was. It was shunted aside, though, by three official looking ones in heavy, expensive parchment envelopes. One was for him, one for Narcissa and one for Draco. Not sure what these were, as they were plenty heavy and thicker than the one from Gringotts, he picked up his. Grabbing the platinum letter opener that was always by the mail, he turned the one over that was addressed to him. Then his brow furrowed more. The seal on it was one he knew well; from the head of the House of Black. Fingering the thick wax, he felt the first stirrings of a slight panic, his heart hammering in his chest just a little faster than normal. As none of them had received anything official from the House of Black since Wallburga died, he didn't think this contained anything 'good'.Hand now shaking slightly, hoping that what he knew could be the worst wasn't contained in this missive, he slit the envelope open. Pulling out the mass of contents, something that doubled in size, he picked up the cover letter that came with it. As always, he checked the letterhead. It was from a well-respected law firm called Shark, Chum and Bloode, one that handled many old Pureblood lines. Glancing further down, his heart began hammering faster. As he feared, it was at the behest of Sirius. As he read what was contained on that one page of expensive parchment, his gut caught fire in a way it hadn't before in his life and he didn't think there was any amount of stomach soother in the world that would put out the blaze.Once he put the cover letter down with a now trembling hand, he quickly grabbed what had been enclosed with it and leafed through the mass. Oh Merlin! Oh Merlin no! This was about as bad as it could get. Quickly snatching up Narcissa's, he torn into it, not bothering with the letter opener, then read through what was there. That fire in his gut turned into something akin to molten lava. Though he knew by now what was in Draco's, he tore into it as well. Again, it was the same. While he didn't want to open the letter from Gringotts, knowing what it would contain, he did. As expected, all vaults affected by what Sirius had done were locked down solid with no chance of getting into them until the situation was resolved. By this point, Lucius was damned sure that the sun had split off a chunk and it was lodged in his stomach. Nothing he knew was going to quell the fire in it. Nothing. With hands that trembled, he pushed the letters that had just made his life a living hell into a pile. Staring at them, his mind was all over the place. First and foremost came a thought he had never dealt with in his entire life; where was he going to get the money to tend to the most basic of needs for the lifestyle they lived? Oh, he had a small portion of the Malfoy fortune, of course, and the Manor, but most of it was now locked down because of how his father's will was written. He was not married to Narcissa and Draco was, officially, a bastard child. While the official paperwork for all of that would probably take a couple more weeks, for all intents and purposes, he had never married and Draco was born out of wedlock, at least that's how it was now seen, legally. Now what did he do?Still shaking madly, his heart feeling like it was going to explode, he stared at the paperwork that had just made his life a living hell, trying to sort out what to do. Though the monetary and righting some of the situation here should be the first area he thought about, it wasn't. The first thing that came to mind was that the Dark Lord would not be pleased with this turn of events. He funneled a great deal of money in that direction so their agenda could be fulfilled. In fact, he was certain, aside from Bella, that he was the biggest source of funding to that side of the conflict. To cut that off abruptly would mean a great deal of pain, of the physical kind, was in his future. He most certainly didn't need that on top of this nightmare. After taking a vial of the strongest stomach soother they had in the house from an elf that seemed to read his mind, Lucius tried to focus. Shunting aside thoughts about the Dark Lord, his mind honed in on the mess. Getting on the right track, he grabbed the parchment he always had close at hand then quickly scribbled off a note to his solicitor. While he was sure the man had received copies of everything he had, they needed a meeting set up, post haste, to sort this. The first area that needed tending to was to see if they could negotiate with Sirius. He wasn't sure what he could manage to wiggle so that he could reverse some of what Sirius had done, but there had to be something. If he could get terms and what Sirius wanted, he might be able to come up with something to at least halt part of this before it went into full effect. Though he figured that other bits weren't in the offing. All he needed was an idea of what to do then he could work from there. On the heels of sending an elf off with the message, he straightened up. It was time to not only fill his wife and son in on the nightmare that just dropped on them, but see what he could manage. The first thing that came to mind was accounts he had overseas when it came to all of them. While those orders were all inclusive, he might have a few that had gone unnoticed. At least he hoped. No, he prayed they were. If they were affected as well, all of them were in real trouble.
By noon, Lucius realized how far down the loo his life had gone. The accounts were locked solid, all of them, including the ones he had made certain were hidden over the years. As far as he could determine, the only vaults he had access to were the one that was his from his father that would pay him until he found a wife and produced a legitimate heir, the vault set up to tend to expenses related to the upkeep of the Manor and the one that would pay out child support, of a predetermined amount, for a bastard child. There were a couple of smaller ones that weren't affected as they were his before the marriage. Every other vault was locked either because he was now not fulfilling the terms of his father's will, they were joint with Narcissa, they were determined to contain assets accrued after the marriage, they were partially, or wholly, Black vaults and they were left to the legitimate Malfoy heir, of which there wasn't one anymore. All the properties that were Malfoy or Black, save the Manor, were locked down. There were a couple small places he owned and rented out that were still fine, but the big, expensive ones were locked with the goblins taking over collecting the rent on those that were occupied by others.
Narcissa's inheritance from her family was locked down, including all vaults, property and belongings. From what they could determine, plenty of very valuable items from the Manor had vanished, magically sent to the vaults that were now locked. Draco's inheritance vaults were locked down. His school vault was locked, as it had come from the Malfoy side. Items he had inherited from both grandparents had vanished, taken to one of the vaults. Thankfully, the order hadn't included lesser gifts over the years. It seemed there was a value clause. Anything over that went, but the minor items didn't. Draco basically had nothing other than a small vault that was something akin to a school vault. It was nowhere near as valuable as his other one as it was set aside for a bastard child. An hour ago they had gotten the official confirmation from the House of Black that Narcissa was not only officially disinherited, but kicked out of the House of Black. That made Draco's bastard status official. He, too, was out of the House of Black officially. If Narcissa's status hadn't put him there, the official paperwork for him being kicked out was included. Which meant they had no hope of getting anything back from the House of Black. To add insult to injury, included with the papers for the aforementioned was the official notice that Andromeda had been reinstated and her daughter was made the official heir to the House of Black. Up until this morning, Draco had been the heir as there wasn't one and it was doubtful Sirius would produce a child. As Andromeda felt like Sirius did on so many matters, it was doubtful that Narcissa could do anything or get her status back after Sirius died. While what Narcissa brought into the marriage wasn't the fortune that the Malfoys held, it was sizable and had been used for plenty over the years. All of that was gone. If he read the papers correctly, it also meant that any assets gained from the use of monies from the House of Black would either wholly revert back or they would have to be sold off then half sent back to that house while the other half went into the Malfoy coffers, something he couldn't touch until he produced a legitimate heir. Bloody wonderful. If all of that wasn't enough to make him go completely around the twist while he desperately tried to deal with the consequences, try to undo parts and handle what was left, he had other issues that were coming into play. On the top of that list were Narcissa and Draco. They were both, obviously, upset. While his wife was keeping her usual stoic front, he knew she realized just what some of this mess meant and how it affected them in a myriad of ways. Her trembling was testament to how upset she was. However, she was letting him tend to it and would deal accordingly after they saw their solicitor that afternoon. The man already contacted him and set up an emergency appointment so they could find out if there was any kind of wiggle room or if Sirius was open to negotiations. He was sure there wasn't on the first front and was praying there was a chance on the second. They just had to find out. Either of them directly contacting Sirius was a very bad idea, so he was having it done through solicitors. After all, that's how normal matters were attended to.Draco, on the other hand, wasn't being as reasonable. His son was irate. While Lucius understood that, the show of anger and temper were not helping matters. Yes, it was something he understood, but the display was helping nothing when it came to sorting out what was here and coming up with a plan to deal with it. In fact, the threats Draco was leveling all sorts of directions had him grinding his teeth. After a half an hour of listening to them, including a diatribe against Potter that was rather lengthy, he had, at wand point, made it clear his son was to sit down and shut up or he would do it for him. It was his sneaking suspicion that some of what Draco had said and threatened since Potter came back had made its way in Sirius' direction and prompted part of what happened. He just couldn't get through to his son, because of the anger, that time was needed to handle the ramifications and see what they could manage to undo. Draco wanted revenge. Well, honestly, he understood that as he wanted some himself, but the mess handed to him made it to where it needed to come first. Revenge—if he got the opportunity, he would exact it, no doubt there. Then came even worse. Bella and her husband stormed into the Manor while he was desperately trying to deal with the nightmare he had woken up to. Somewhere he realized that he should have known that if Narcissa was affected, so was Bella. It just didn't connect until Bella showed up. As with her sister, Bella's vaults were gone. So were a large portion of Rodolphus'. And if he thought Draco's anger was bad, the rage Bella was in was even worse. While he was a large portion of the funding the Dark Lord received, Bella's contribution was probably bigger. When that fact sunk in, he realized how bad of shape some areas were. The Dark Lord would probably end up in a rage unlike anything they had seen for a very long time. At the mere thought of that he was shuddering. While Narcissa took on the task of dealing with the enraged Bella, he desperately tried to sort through the mass of papers trying to find something that would help. All he was hopeful on was his end. Bella—he was certain her part was gone forever. Sirius wasn't apt to wiggle on anything when it came to her. After all, the man knew just what she was like and how attached she was to the Dark Lord. Though he didn't say it aloud, he was dead bang certain that this—nightmare was going to set the Dark Lord off in ways none of them had seen before, even among his most loyal Death Eaters. No, that was not a 'good' thing, for any of them.
Though Sirius was awake, he didn't open his eyes. Harry, he could tell, was still asleep as his deep breathing was an indication of that state. From what he could hear of Remus, his old friend was as well. It was fine, of course, as they didn't have anything pressing to take care of today. It was more just getting settled and making the place 'theirs'. He was sure there were other bits, of course, like the start of the fallout from what he had done. If he calculated it right, the worst would hit the following day. As he had signed the papers after normal business hours, no journalists could pick up on what he did before the paper went to the presses. They would today, though. He was sure part of it, the juiciest bits like Narcissa being out and Draco being declared a bastard, would hit on the front page. After all, that was too good of a story to pass up. That was fine too. Let it. He didn't rightly give a damn.
In the past he would have worried, but wasn't now. Oh, there was some concern, of course, as would be warranted, but not a huge one. They were safe in a place only a tiny handful knew about or where it was. The ones that did know you couldn't get it out of because of the spells. Since they weren't going out in public yet, they weren't in danger that way. Though Grimmauld Place was safe, with no one being able to get in, too many knew about it, like arses from the other side. This one they didn't. Perfect. Finally opening his eyes, he smiled at the view. Oh, it was still darkish in the room, the only real light coming from the cracks around the curtains, but that wasn't why. The reason he was smiling was that this wasn't Grimmauld Place. The memories of whatever everywhere he looked had been in the place, and most of them weren't pleasant ones. This house didn't have that. Everything was still new to all of them and it didn't contain the shite from the past. Another perfect for him. He felt better here, more relaxed and like he had better control. It was because he didn't have to battle the figurative ghosts from the past every time he looked at something. As he looked around, he was happy with what he saw. While he didn't have a hand in the decorating, other than helping Remus pick out some bits he liked, what the goblins, or their contractors, did suited them perfectly. It was cheery, yet not overly bright, with decorations that suited their masculine tastes. They would be adding their own spin on it, of course, something he was certain Remus would push them to help with, but it was already good by him.As he thought about it, he realized that this was really the first place all of them had that was theirs. He had a small apartment after graduating, until his mother died and the house became his. It wasn't a 'home', though. The apartment was more like just somewhere to stash his belongings and have a girl over here and there. Harry—that was bloody obvious. Remus had his tiny cottage, but it had been willed to him by his parents. He knew his old friend hadn't really liked it, preferring to stay elsewhere or rent a flat unless he couldn't afford it. The issue with Remus' cottage was the same as he had with Grimmauld Place; the memories. Though his parents loved him to death and would have done most anything for him, the fact was that's where he was attacked as a child. Yeah, that was enough to shade anyone's view on a place. So, for the first time, they all had a home free of the baggage others they had stayed in contained. With all that was going on, it could only help all of them. Maybe it would make the last bit of the transition easier. At least he hoped it would.Eyes locking on the closed curtains, he smiled a little bigger. This was good. Then, with a groan, he shut them. The normal call of nature was beckoning and he thought it best to get up and take care of it. After that, he'd see what came in the mail. Most of it was something Remus would take on, but he expected some from his solicitor, areas only he could handle. So, he probably should get up. Besides, he thought it would be nice to have breakfast ready for Remus once. The man usually had it prepared for them, so a change of pace wasn't a bad idea. If he did this right, he could get up, go get the elves on it, grab the mail then come back up and wake the two for breakfast in bed.Deciding that was a damned good idea, he grinned. Easing out of bed, making sure he didn't wake the other two, he grabbed his robe then padded to the bathroom. While he was sure some form of hell was coming that day because of what he unleashed, the three of them were out of whatever it was. As long as they stayed that way, he was happy.
