Because We Are Snakes – The News
Friday morning Harry sat surrounded by his friends at the Gryffindor Table. Breakfast was progressing much how it always did but things took a turn to the severely entertaining when the morning owl post showed up. Up until the point the Morning Edition of the Prophet showed up there had been only a few idle comments about Umbridge’s absence from the head table.
Harry took it all in, dividing his attention between students and professors so as not to miss a single note worthy reaction.
As usual, the professors got the newspaper a minute or two before the owls carrying the students’ newspaper showed up, many times Harry had wondered if this was somehow an intentional thing but today he was thanking whoever came up with that system because it totally worked to his advantage.
First, Dumbledore’s eyebrows shot up so far high into his hairline and disappeared into it, Harry was sure they would never come back. Then, McGonnagal who had seen Dumbledore’s reaction picked up her copy from in front of her and let out a startled-unbelieving chuckle that sounded oddly enough like someone had taken a turkey and squeezed the air out of it. By far, the best reaction came from the very austere Severus Snape, who upon witnessing both such reactions rose up an inquisitive eyebrow and in all his composure opened his own newspaper at the same time he took a sip of his morning anise tea. This, however, was not the best possible thing to do at the time; his dark eyes set on the headline and the sip he had just taken sprayed all over the table and newspaper as he could not contain his gleeful-and-completely-evil-sort sort of chuckle/cough. Then the man proceeded to laugh out loud and it was the creepiest thing many of the students had ever heard. Snape laughing out loud was just… wrong. But Harry supposed he too was sick of Umbridge and completely enjoying her leaving. Harry had to give it to him; the man regained his composure in less than ten seconds and kept eating his breakfast like nothing of importance was going on… Harry was observant enough not to be fooled though; he had caught the couple of times that an upward twitch had shown up at the corner of Snape’s mouth, belling his effort to keep from smiling in public.
So many reactions from shocked to incredulous to plainly relieved were to be found in the Great Hall that morning. The largest group of shocked people was, unsurprisingly, the Gryffindor table where everyone was completely quiet for all of a minute before breaking into joyful shouts and standing ovations which would most likely turn into a clandestine party at the tower tonight. He had no doubt the twins would secure some more… adult… beverages for when the younger students and the goody-goodies retired to bed. Harry had all intention of participating in the celebration.
Across the Hall, Draco Malfoy watched the surrounding reactions with his own wide open mouth. Harry bet he had no idea things would go this far and Harry would actually make the woman disappear in such a way that no investigation would be prompted. Losing his Inquisitorial Squad privileges was undoubtedly something the blond has likely not expected.
Hermione made a comment about how finally they would be able to properly study and practice for their Defense OWLs and Harry braked a laugh at her comment.
‘Trust Hermione to see the academic advantages to this before anything else.’
She caught his eye then and raised an eyebrow in silent question. Harry shrugged his shoulders in a non-committal way and she nodded catching the fact that he would not tell her if he had something to do with Umbridge’s sudden love life and disappearance. Harry continued to take in the different reactions while she took in the look on his face. Malfoy caught Harry’s eye with still complete bewilderment plastered on his face and Harry gave the young heir the single most vicious and toothy smile he had in his arsenal, his green eyes shone with satisfaction as they focused on Malfoy and made the blond shudder in complete fear of this Harry Potter he never knew excised before. Seeing the interaction take place, Hermione knew for sure Harry had had a hand in Umbridge’s disappearance but was completely unwilling to look into it -it was safer if she didn’t.
Between the shouts and exclamations of relief and happiness from the students in the Hall, no one paid attention to the moment between the two boys and Hermione.
No one except Snape… who had been looking at the Gryffindor’s reaction with disgust at their blatant show of Gryffindor rowdiness and had watched the whole interaction pass between the three. He was completely incredulous of what his well honed intellect and observational skills were screaming at him had just happened. The implications were just preposterous.
Then again… when it concerned Potter anything could happen. He would have to keep his eyes out and tread carefully.
Not that Potter –in case he did actually have something to do with the Umbridge situation- had the skill necessary to make him disappear as well if he pushed too hard. If the boy had the ability to do such a thing it would have happened years ago.
What he had no idea how to fit into the ‘what if’s and conjectures about the likelihood of Potter having something to do with this was how Draco Malfoy fit into it.
The professors, especially those who had been constantly hounded and harassed by the evil toad from hell, were all as happy with this eventuality as the students were.
School had never been as fun as it was that whole day during every single class, points were given away like there was no tomorrow for the silliest of reasons and the lessons were simply hysterical and cat or toad oriented.
Even Defense with Snape as a substitute turned out to be a hoot… which was saying something so far as Harry was concerned.
In the madness and elation following the morning news, Theo Nott had not been able to catch Harry’s eye to set up a time to talk. He found Harry later that afternoon in the library where Hermione was –to Theo’s concern- bitching to Harry and Ron about something or other most likely having to do with homework or revising.
He walked pass their table picking random books until Harry realized he wanted to talk to him.
Harry simply made a discrete gesture with his head signaling for Theo to wait outside and Theo left after a small nod.
From between two book shelves, Draco Malfoy, saw the small interaction and was overcome with curiosity he had not felt since he followed Harry and his posse to Hagrid’s hut that time the big oaf took it upon himself to hatch a dragon –illegally might he add- in school property; naturally he followed at a distance. He had a feeling Potter could tell when he was near though he didn’t know how.
From far away and around the corners he watched them go down hallways and up stairs until they made it to the tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy and went behind it. He seriously wanted to know how Potter was apparently aware of every single nook and cranny and hidden places at Hogwarts. Such information could be absolutely useful.
He made a cautious approach to the edge of the tapestry and slowly pull a bit aside so he could peek in. what he saw and heard was not what he was expecting in the least.
“Are you sure about this Theo? I mean, you really don’t have to go to this lengths and I know if your father ever found out he would be seriously cross with you. Besides, with Voldemort back if such a thing got out it would paint a huge target on your back. You really don’t have to do this, isn’t it enough to be friends just like we agreed?”
“I don’t want to be just a friend Harry, I want to be more than that, and even if we can’t be together I don’t want to be a mere friend. Please Harry, just say yes, please. I want to belong to you.”
Theo was kneeling on the cold stone floor before Potter, his forehead on the dark haired boy’s stomach, and his hands holding on to Harry’s hips. To Draco, he looked like someone begging for mercy with his eyes downcast.
Slender fingers of one hand caressed Theo’s auburn hair while the other tilted Theo’s head upward so they could look into each other’s eyes.
“You really want to belong to me? To be mine in such a way?” Potter asked.
“Yes.” Was the immediate response and Potter sigh before smiling sadly at Theo and saying a quiet “Okay.”
Theo shot up from his kneeling and hugged the green eyes boy so tight Draco found himself wincing.
From around Theo’s shoulder Draco saw those glowing green eyes looking straight at him and he knew then that Potter had known the whole time he was standing there watching. This was proven true when he say the toothy devilish smile Potter shot him even as he too held on to Theo.
It was all too much for Draco’s mind to process and he ran away to his dorm room to do some serious thinking.
Still in the alcove, Harry was completely satisfied with this unexpected outcome.
“I will give you something especial Theo, something that will mark you as mine even if you can’t tell people what it is and no one but me would ever be able to take it off you. Would you like that Theo?”
“Yes Harry, I would very much like that.”
Theo’s voice ringed with unmeasured happiness.
“Wait right here Theo, it won’t take too long for me to bring it for you.”
Harry was so elated he honestly didn’t want to let this opportunity go and despite his misgiving about going down to the Chamber this early in the night he resolved to do it anyways. With extreme caution, and taking the service stairs hidden within the walls, Harry made it to the dungeons and entered one of the hidden entrances he had discovered while exploring the Chambers.
He chose a silver collar with an amethyst this time and set his mark within the jewel with the correct spells. In less than twenty minutes he was back in the alcove and setting the collar upon his new servant’s neck. Harry let Theo touch it and get accustomed to its weigh before he used an illusion to make it look like a necklace, the winged basilisk around the flaming amethyst lightning bolt hung innocently from the boy’s neck and Theo fingered it reverently hardly believing he could ever be so lucky as to actually belong to his kind and caring Harry Potter.
All the while Harry was gleefully thinking it was no wonder Voldemort had gathered so many follower so quickly, apparently in the Wizarding World it really did not take much effort to start gathering people to form an army…
Go figure.
