Authors’ Note – I know it’s been a while since we’ve been able to post a new chapter here. The fault on this one is mine; I’ve been battling with depression in a major way and writing took a backseat for a while. Rogercat has been remarkably patient with me as have our readers. Thank you guys for that!

Chapter Twenty-Three – Favors and Gifts
Beorn was fairly efficient with most of the chores required to keep his home and household running well, but his size had been an issue when it came to the smaller, more delicate tasks. He had tried, but it was obvious to some members of the company that he simply could not be as efficient to those smaller tasks as he was to the heavier ones. Sewing was one prime example, and the two women in the company had quickly realized their host’s issues when the skinchanger had entered his home one morning with a fairly decent sized rip in his trousers.
“I am glad that the dwarrow and elves have it as obligatory that soldiers have to know how to mend their own clothes, even if some may feel insulted in their male pride and say it is not their craft calling. Ha, as if there would be enough tailors and seamstresses nearby to mend the clothing of an entire army,” Hari said as they sat down to their work.
She and Acacia had offered to mend Beorn’s clothes, knowing he would need the help since his hands were not suited for the task. He’d commented that he would need them since he couldn’t stay in his bear form all the time, especially if he had guests once again. After all, not everyone was comfortable about people wearing only their birthday suit.
“Oh yes, that is one of the things that surprised me the first time I arrived in Ered Luin to visit so I could be a little more familiar to my new people. To see all those dwarrow in the clothing guild, knitting and sewing clothes and other things, when I was used to do it with my fellow Hobbit madams and lasses! True, dwarrowdams are taught those skills as well, but still…”
Acacia could recall the fine embroidered handkerchief Dori had first given her when she had caught a minor cold during that journey, and her shock when he revealed that he had done it himself. One of the items planned to be sewn into her wedding dress was a light-blue fabric from Thorin’s and Dis’ deceased brother Frerin’s finest tunic he had worn at holiday events, so that he could be present at his brother’s wedding in a spiritual sense. It was something Dori had crafted years ago, and it was a beautiful tunic.
Acacia had seen it during one of her visits to Ered Luin, and she had asked Dis if she and Thorin would object if some of the fabric was used somehow in her wedding ensemble. The hobbit had explained her desire to honor their departed brother, and she’d been given huge hugs by both Thorin and Dis when the pair had agreed to the question.
Dis had been working with the tailors to ensure that the fabric from the tunic was displayed according to her future sister’s wishes, and Acacia had found herself very entranced with the designs they had come up with. There had been other designs for the celebrations that would follow the arrival of the dwarrow Thorin ruled over, and she’d protested at the sheer numbers of the designs. Dori and Dis had reminded her that, as the Queen Consort of the Longbeard clan, she would be expected to be properly attired.
Granted, they all knew that most of it was wishful thinking since the settlement at Ered Luin did not produce enough to merit such a lavish wardrobe. Dis had proceeded with the designs since she knew her brother was intent on reclaiming their rightful home, and she wanted her sister to be ready to represent their people once the mountain was theirs once more.
“Well, in a few years it may be changed with all the riches that surely must still remain in Erebor. Some of the gold may be enough to buy some lovely fabrics from the far East,” the hobbit quoted Dis’s comment during the conversation with Hari, knowing that the dwarrowdam’s response to Acacia’s protest would amuse her friend.
After listening to Acacia’s descriptions of the plans her future sister-in-law had for her wardrobe, it amused Hari to tell what she remembered of the clothing from various periods of Earth history, especially things that had once been so rare that only the richest Kings had been able to afford it. Celebrimbor had never gotten the chance to travel to the far Eastern lands of Middle-earth, though he and Narvi had talked about at times over a stop of good beer.
“I am not surprised about that spices like pepper and such far away spices was so expensive if you had to travel half the world for it. Thank the Lady of the Spring for common herbs that can be grown in your own garden and costs far less to use in cooking.”
The witch had to agree with the hobbit on that; food would be so incredibly bland had herbs not been cultivated in the gardens and farms. Beorn had quite a few so Acacia, Bombur, Oin, and Hari had harvested what could be used for cooking and healing.
Before she could comment, both women were startled when Fili approached the bench they were sitting on while attending to their mending.
“Good morning, Fili,” Acacia greeted with a smile.
“Good morning,” he answered, smiling in return. “Hari, I was wondering if you’d join me for a walk?”
Hari looked at Acacia, who nodded in encouragement. She was willing to take care of the mending while her companion spent some time getting some sunlight.
“Go on, I’ll have Dori join me for this,” she told her friend. “Enjoy some sunshine and fresh air.”
Hari set the mending down, hopping off of the bench and heading towards her friend with a bright smile.
“I’d be happy to join you,” the witch said, taking his arm when he offered it.
He escorted her out to the gardens, relaxing as the sunlight washed over both of them. Fili could see the contentment on her face and knew he’d made the right decision regarding where their walk should take place.
“So, what is it that you wanted to talk about? Is something wrong with my sword?”
“Well, given how the metal cracked where it did, we had to melt it down and reforge a new one. I think you’ll be pleased when you see it later,” he told her. “I needed to ask you something else entirely.”
She gave him a curious look but allowed him to continue.
“After I realized I had lived more than one life, I made a promise that I would not repeat mistakes made back then,” Fili started out. “You have owned my heart through two lifetimes, my Emerald-Girl, and I want so very much to spend this life together. I am asking if you will allow me to court you and show you the depths of my heart and soul to you.”
Hari was stunned; she had not expected this at all, but her heart gave a leap of joy when she realized just how much he adored her. It was easy to see the depths of his emotions in those blue eyes that always met hers with such warmth.
“I’m not the most stable person,” she said, blushing when he gave her a look that had become very familiar in the dream world they’d shared together for years.
“I know you’ve gone through horrible things in both lives, Hari, and I can’t say that our lives together will always be smooth. However, I can promise you won’t be alone through it.”
Her lips trembled as tears filled her eyes; the knowledge she wasn’t alone was something that helped to ease a fear she’d had for so long now. Fili had always been there as soon as their dreams had been linked, supporting her through so much strife and loneliness.
“I would honored to be courted by you,” the witch told him softly. “You mean so much to me, my Lion, and I very much want to walk this path together.”
The dwarf smiled at her, joy lighting his expression as he did so. He cupped her face, pressing a tender kiss to her lips.
“And this time, the whole Line of Durin and those of Durin’s Folk will not allow the fallen Maia to capture you again. The moment they learn that you are reborn, even as a mortal, they will rise to arm for your sake. Uncle Thorin even requested the most skilled of our priests to try and create dwarven spells that will hide you from the Eye.”
Most knowledge of such spells had sadly been lost in the Fall of Moria, but what little that had been saved had been used as basis for new ones in Erebor.
“They can do that,” she asked, eyes wide.
“They can,” he answered. “I know you’re a witch, amralime, but I want to make sure you have every protection we can devise because I refuse to lose you. You are the reason my heart beats, more precious than the air we breathe, and I will spend every moment of our lives showing you just how loved and adored you are.”
Hari blushed adorably, making him kiss her again before starting to weave the courtship braid into her soft hair. She stayed still, letting him fasten a beautiful mithril and sapphire bead into her hair.
“My heart is open to yours, hiding nothing as we walk the path of courtship,” he recited while weaving the braid and putting the bead into her hair. “I will seek the companionship of no other as our journey begins.”
They pressed their foreheads together while Hari murmured to him softly.
“To try and live the life that should have been ours in the past.”
“To live that life, beloved,” Fili said with a voice full of determination and joy.
