Disclaimer: Harry Potter and the Potter universe belong to JK Rowling. I am making no money from this. |
Epilogue AN: I shouldn't say this, but I really like this coming chapter. Hopefully you will too, dear reader. And, after this, are just the vignettes.
Book_addict_89, I'm so glad you found the two adorable. Enjoy the epilogue. I think this is a pretty good one! It was written before I finished the rest of the story, so it's been something I read and re-read to get me inspired to write.
Phoenix-rob – now I wish I'd had the brains to include that. Everyone, THIS is the official explanation for how Severus got his soul healed: Harry (and Severus') intent made it happen. Seriously, “Perhaps Dumbles was right - Love is Harry's hidden power AND magic is all about 'intent', as it seems when Harry reaffirmed his love for Severus and desire to see him whole Magic 'fixed' it all for him” my jaw dropped when I read that. It is absolutely perfect, and fits in with what I've built during this story. So, kudos, Phoenix-rob, kudos! And it was both of them, as at the same time as Severus was admitting his love for Harry, Harry was admitting his love for Severus.
Thunderbird – I've altered one of the vignettes so that you find out what the horcrux was. As for working on anything new – I plan to start posting another story pretty soon, but my drive to write has kind of wandered off (I've just started my own business with a friend so things have been somewhat frantic; that and fretting about the cat following her op [she's recovering beautifully]; duelling my brother at YuGiOh!; oh, and making amendments to my Slytherin hoodie ready for a trip to the HP Studios in October have rather done for me). Hopefully, with a bit of encouragement, I'll get back onto the story. Like most of my stuff, a lot is pre-written, so I can post and then feel the edge of panic as I run out of pre-written stuff!

Epilogue – Your Way
Nineteen years later...
Severus stood on the platform and sighed. Around him was evidence of the impact Harry had had. Harry was, technically, an Auror. However, he worked mainly in the Beast, Being and Spirit Division as a kind of liaison when a magical creature was involved in some kind of crime, whether as a victim or a perpetrator. As a result of that, and with Hermione Weasley's help, they had begun slowly and surely to change attitudes: two adult goblins were hugging their child and admonishing the youngster to behave at Hogwarts; further up the platform stood a small group, clearly a werewolf pack, led by one Fenrir Greyback and his mate Nymphadora Tonks. Tonks was rubbing dirt off a girl's cheek and trying to smile. She laid one arm casually on Greyback's arm, letting the wedding ring shine in the light. They had been married whilst Fenrir had still been in prison, and their second child conceived the night he had been released. (Their first, Edward Fenrir Greyback, had been created at the Battle of Hogwarts.) They were surrounded by not just their eleven year old daughter, but four other children: two boys and two girls. All Harry and Severus' honorary nieces and nephews.
Severus' own brood were mingling with friends, all except for Shosanna, who clung tightly to his hand. Sanna, as the rest of the family insisted on calling her, was most like her Slytherin father, content to read, although there was a strongly mischievous streak too and that was all Harry.
“Papa,” she said quietly, “I understand why I can't start Hogwarts yet, but do I have to go back to my school? It's so boring!”
Crouching – Severus was only too glad that the start of term had fallen before a full moon rather than after one – he spoke seriously to his daughter, “Shosanna, I know you find the work less than challenging, but it is very important that you have an understanding of the Muggle world. You're very special, as we've always said. Like your siblings you're magical, and a werewolf, but you also need to remember that both of your Dads had Muggle backgrounds. You need to embrace that part of your heritage, even if you think it's pointless. And there are good things about the Muggle world, aren't there?” he asked, thinking about her addiction to Muggle anime.
Not far from him, Harry was crouching by Albus. Harry's ass was aching after the previous night's pounding, but he enjoyed being under Severus so much that he was hardly likely to complain. “But, Daddy,” Albus was almost whining, “what if I'm put in Hufflepuff?!” He sounded scandalised by the very idea.
Biting back the urge to laugh, Harry answered seriously, “Allie, you know Papa and I just don't care. We've got Gryffindors, Slytherins, even a Ravenclaw! If you went into Hufflepuff we'd have the full set! So long as you go with what is best for you, Papa and I won't mind.”
“Don't wanna be a Hufflepuff!” Albus grouched, arms folded crossly.
“Why on earth not?” Harry asked, genuinely confused, “They've won the House Cup every year for five years now, mainly thanks to Teddy! Clearly that shows there's nothing wrong with Hufflepuff?”
“Still don' wanna,” Albus muttered.
“Look,” Harry brushed back untidy black hair and looked into green eyes that were so like his, “Albus, honestly, it doesn't matter. But if it matters to you then you can ask the Sorting Hat not to put you in Hufflepuff.” He paused, “I asked it not to put me in Slytherin, because all I'd heard about Slytherin by that point was how evil it was. I was happy in Gryffindor, but that doesn't mean I couldn't have been happy in other Houses too.”
Albus scuffed his shoe along the floor.
“Don't do that,” Harry scolded. “How many times do I have to tell you about that, Allie?!”
“Sorry, Daddy.” He hugged his father. “I'll be good.”
“I know you will,” Harry answered, feeling a lump rising in his throat. He loved all his cubs so much, “Remember, we'll be seeing you next week anyway for the moon.”
Albus, like all of Harry and Severus' children, was a born werewolf. Unlike his bitten father, Albus didn't feel aggression as a wolf, and was much happier playing with his siblings during the night of the full moon. Their home contained a magically enlarged space filled with toys and large logs for the cubs to race around. Harry always made sure he re-arranged the items so that each time was a new experience for his children. He and Severus had worked hard to ensure their young were well adjusted and happy. And attending Hogwarts had always been a part of that plan.
When Hogwarts had reopened, and it had become clear that Harry intended to send his, at that point, only son Theodore when he eventually turned eleven, Minerva McGonagall had had a meeting with Theo's parents to explore how best to deal with his lycanthropy. She had smiled warmly at both men before saying, “I hadn't realised at first, when you registered his name, who he was.”
The two men exchanged glances. After deciding that they wanted to share a last name, and not give their children doubled-barrelled surnames, they had discussed possibilities. Harry had been happy to be rid of 'Potter' and wanted to take on 'Snape'. But Severus had shaken his head. “I want us both to be given a new name. We belong to each other, not one to the other.”
It had been agreed – after Black and Evans had been swiftly vetoed – to go with Prince. And now, here they were discussing how the school would one day cope with Theodore Felix Prince.
“I know he's only newborn,” Harry had said, “but I wanted you to have a chance to get used to the idea. We've got a room to keep us safe during the full moon, and I'd like it if he could come home and spend it with us. That would be safest for everyone.”
The witch had nodded and turned to Severus. He had given a small smile, “I've been speaking to Harry's … wolf side,” Severus had been about to say 'fluffy half' but had known that that would not have been well received by the wolf sitting beside him, nor the witch opposite, “and he says born werewolves, like Theodore, will not need the Wolfsbane potion to remain calm. He will stay as himself throughout. There is little chance he will ever want to bite anyone, but I would far rather he rejoined us on the nights of the full moons.”
That had been eighteen years ago and Theo was now full grown and had finished his education. At first, he had reported back to his Dads that he and Teddy Greyback seemed to be the only werewolves at the school, but by the time he had left, he had said that there were at least six others (not including his siblings). Being a born werewolf, and having the advantage of being Harry Potter's son, Theo had decided to move to another part of the world and work to improve the treatment of werewolves there. Teddy Greyback, who had finished Hogwarts as well, had gone with him and both families were just waiting for the two friends to admit they were a couple. Theo came home fairly frequently, but had missed the last two full moons, which had caused both of his fathers tremendous sadness.
Now Hogwarts accepted children of any magical ability, whether they were human or not. There were even rumours that this year a centaur would be starting.
“Daddy! Daddy!” That was Makarie. She barrelled into her father and clutched at his neck, knocking Albus aside.
“Marakie!” Harry snapped, reaching for his son. “How many times?!”
She looked sad for a moment, but her black eyes were sparkling.
“Oh for heaven's sake...” Harry sighed, “What is it?”
Makarie, or as she was known in the family, after Albus had got the name mixed up a long time ago, Marakie, was his oldest daughter. About to start fourth year at Hogwarts, she was a determined prankster, and had surprised them all when she had been put in Ravenclaw.
“Victoire's snogging some random guy!” she announced.
“Marakie...” it was a low, drawn out groan, “tell me you left them alone?”
“Daddy, I'm not a complete idiot! Wouldn't it be great if she got married and had kids! I miss having babies to play with.” She gave a pointed look at his flat stomach.
Harry rubbed his belly and glared at her. “I told you, Marakie, we both have, I'm not having any more children. Shosanna was my last. Six is enough for any werewolf!”
“But Daddy...” she wailed.
“No!” That was Severus coming over, Shosanna still holding his hand. “You know full well that a werewolf pair should have six cubs, and we have six. Besides, do you not remember how much pain your father was in during that last pregnancy?” He glanced down at Shosanna and squeezed her hand, “We're glad we did it; glad we had you, but we're not having any more.”
Makarie glowered. It was an expression all their children had picked up from Severus. “But you could turn,” she observed, looking at the older wizard, “and then we could have another six!”
“Oh, Merlin, no!” Harry gasped, worn out just at the very thought.
In truth, he and his mate had discussed turning Severus, but they had decided that it made sense to have a wizard available to protect them should something ever go wrong with their wards. Harry knew it caused his mate pain to feel that sense of isolation, being the only non-werewolf in the family, but every full moon was spent with all of them together (well, it had been until Theo had stopped joining them) playing until the youngsters fell asleep and then Harry's wolf would make love to Severus in a private room away from their dreaming cubs. The other thing they had kept private from thier children was that Harry physically couldn't have any more cubs.
“Titus!” Harry yelled, glimpsing another of his cubs, “Get over here and sort out your sister!”
Titus, who was just about to go into sixth year after having achieved Outstanding in all of his OWLs, sauntered over. “What's Marakie done now?” he asked, knowing it had to be that particular sister causing problems. After all, he could see Leandria still gossiping with Aunt Hermione and her husband Uncle Charlie. Uncle Ron hadn't come to see off his nieces and nephews.
“She wants me to become a werewolf and start having pups,” Severus told his son dryly.
“Oh, Merlin, no!” Titus barked, mirroring his other father's cry, “No, Marakie. Six is quite enough for this pack, thank you! Now, get onto the train, it's nearly time to go.”
Makarie obeyed; they all obeyed Titus. There was just something about his character that made them all fall into line. He gave her a gentle shove and wound his red and gold scarf around her neck, causing her to tug at it and glare at him.
Laughing, Harry and Severus corralled their other children onto the train. Leandria waved at them as she finished her conversation and came over. “Hey, Dads,” she said, smiling, “Aunt 'Mione said there's a Malfoy starting this year. Looks just like his dad.”
Interested, Harry peered around, looking for a flash of blond. He didn't see the child, but he saw Draco. The blond nodded politely at the two dark haired men then turned to a carriage where, presumably, his son was already settled.
Aware that time was ticking away, Harry hugged all of his children who were leaving, whispering something in each of their ears. Once he was finished, Severus had his turn, and again he whispered something meant to reassure and calm them. At last, the four Princes were on the train, and the carriage door closed.
Now only the two men remained behind, Shosanna between them, her hands held by one each of her father's palms. She squeezed tightly, causing Severus a small amount of pain as the ring that he wore, and which matched one that Harry wore, was pressed painfully between his digits. They weren't married in the wizarding world; the law hadn't altered enough to allow same sex marriages; however the two men had exchanged rings a long while before, and had even had a Muggle civil ceremony to make clear their commitment to one another.
“No trouble,” Harry practically begged Makarie.
Severus, sure that none but his family could see him, smiled at them, and let the love he felt for his offspring show in his dark eyes. He was so proud of each of them. There was something of each of their parents in them: Titus had Severus' natural commanding presence, and he had Harry's lazy smile; Makarie had flashing black eyes and Harry's thin face (and his tendency to cause trouble); Leandria was far quieter, a studious girl, like Severus, but she was a gifted Quidditch player; Albus shared Harry's eyes and his fathers' combined stubbornness (poor kid). Theo, far away, was most like Harry – a believer in causes, but he had his older parent's stern practical streak too.
Severus glanced down when he heard a sniff.
Shosanna, tears beginning to trickle down her cheeks, looked up at her older siblings.
“Don't Sanna!” Titus said, “We'll see you next week! And I'll want to hear all about your new teacher.”
Albus, his face rather pale, looked at his fathers. He too looked close to tears.
“You'll love it,” Harry reassured him, then focused on all of his offspring, “and look after one another. I don't want to hear that one of my cubs hasn't behaved properly and has shamed the pack.”
They all nodded, faces serious. As born werewolves, they had a greater sense of the pack than Harry did, but as he and Severus were technically the leaders, they made sure their children took good care of one another. And after so many years, and with help from his inner wolf and from Fen, he was finally learning what it meant to be in a pack.
“Remember what I said about making the Drowsy Potion?” Severus asked and received five identical answers.
“Don't make it in a silver cauldron!”
Makarie added, “Honestly, Papa!”
The whistle sounded and suddenly they were out of time. Shosanna ran along the platform, waving at her siblings as the train picked up speed.
Her parents watched the train move, watched their daughter running, and watched hands waving wildly and knew how lucky they were to see their young for full moons.
“Have I mentioned how glad I am you gave up teaching?” Harry asked, holding Severus' hand.
“It might have come up,” the older wizard replied drily. Every year, Harry said the same thing. He knew how much he would have hated Severus being able to see their children every day when he couldn't, and also, he knew too just how dangerous Hogwarts was (for teachers even more so than students). Severus' new job, creating potions for a mail order company, was far safer and much more pleasant.
“I wonder how long it'll take Allie to get sent to the Head's office,” Harry said. Each time a new Prince started, they had ended up in the headteacher's office within a term. Usually for less than stellar reasons. So far only Titus had bucked the trend of being in trouble.
“Oh, I can't wait,” Severus said sarcastically. “How many times have we been told there's a portrait of me in there?”
“Well, four kids, so four times.” Harry responded grinning. Shosanna was coming back and he held out his free hand to her. She took it and smiled at him. “Daddy, do I have to go to Muggle school?”
“Shosanna,” Severus began warningly. “We've already talked about this.”
“I know, but I thought Daddy might say something different to you.”
“Yes, yes,” Harry grumbled, tugging on her palm, “we all know I'm the soft touch.” He led his youngest daughter and his mate from the station. He smiled as he took in the lovely September sunshine and grinned. Theo was due home that night, as it was his birthday. A day where he saw all of his children and his mate was a good day to Harry.
Luckily, all was well.
