Several days later Harry, Roark, Fili, and Kili settled in their new apartments, all of them within the same complex that Logan had moved into. All five apartments were within walking distance of each other, Fili and Kili deciding to share a two-bedroom, while Harry and Roark's apartments shared a nice-size garden terrace, where both immediately went to work putting in small vegetable and herb gardens. Severus had moved into a one-bedroom across from the Peverell Potter brothers, that was across the street from them.
Harry and Roark were still slowly working their way through the files and had yet to call the team together at Colonial Headquarters for the promised conference. When asked when they were going to do so, they would smirk at the one asking, knowing full well they were irritating every one of them by simply shrugging, then turning to walk away to go about whatever business they were on.
Late one afternoon, Ardyn managed to corner the brothers as they were returning from speaking to the weapon's master who made the Lestrange's weapons, demanding to know when they were going to get everyone together.
"When we're damn good and ready," Roark had snapped at him, "and not a centon {minute} before." He was irritated by Ardyn's demanding tone and let him know it as he glared at him. "We are on no timetable as of yet, and continuing to hound us about it, isn't going to make us call them any faster. Now Captain, if you will excuse us, we would really like to get something to eat, then get back to work."
They had walked away from the frowning man, heading for the cafeteria. After Logan, FIli, and Kili had given them their files, the four of them, when not out in Aquarian City hunting down threads of leads that had been left untouched for far too long, could often be found in the brother's office as it was the only one completely cleared of listening devices.
They methodically went through each file, pulling out thread after thread to things that should have been investigated, but for one reason or another, never had been. They each made lists of the things they found that they wanted...NEEDED to look into.
At the same time, they began the work of going through the personal files of the current team members, using only the laptops issued to them by Counter-Intelligence, communicating with Christopher and his team on Caprica via email and instant messaging for a closer look at things they couldn't get into, but Chris would be able too.
They had made a great deal of headway by the evening of the seventh secton {week} that they had been there. On that particular evening, they all met in Roark's apartment for dinner, before hopefully making a start on the Garrison files. It was as they were getting settled, their laptops booting up, that Severus, out of the corner of his eye saw movement. Turning his head, he smirked when he saw Roark making a call as Logan, Fili, and Kili began to argue about the meaning behind one of Kale's orders.
"Logan," came the deep voice as the call connected, the vid screen over the fireplace lighting up.
"Fili. Kili." A second, deeply concerned voice spoke.
Three heads jerked up, then around so fast at the sound of those voices, Severus was surprised none of them got whiplash. He saw the appearance of sudden, unexpected tears as the faces on the screen looked at them with not only a great deal of love but worry.
Roark looked over at Harry and smiled, a pleased look in his eyes as Logan could be heard to whisper, "Daddy," completely forgetting that he had not called Roark Sr. daddy since he had been a small child.
"Dad," came from Fili and Kili at the same time as they looked up.
"Hello, boys. We wanted...Hell, we STILL want to come to you."
"We know you do, Uncle Thorin," Logan said as he lifted a hand to brush away some tears only for more to follow.
"Ah, Logan...don't cry, little brother. We are here for you regardless of where we happen to be."
"I know, Raph," came softly. "It's just been so hard, but," he turned his head to look at his cousins, then to Harry and Roark, then finally at Severus, a slow smile appearing, "Fi, Ki, Harry, and Roark have all been a great help these last few sectons {weeks}, as has having Severus here. It's not the same as having a few brothers, or you, Dad, but it's close enough."
"Boys," Thorin looked at his sons, "are you alright?"
"As alright as we can be, Dad," Fili said as he turned his chair enough to face the vid screen.
"But we miss Kale like crazy, Dad," Kili spoke up.
"Of course you do, son. I'd be very surprised if you didn't," an arch of a dark brow. "I see none of you are in your new uniforms. Care to share why?"
"Roark and Harry's idea," Kili said as a grin appeared. "We all decided to wait until they called the team together, then we would all walk into the conference room wearing our uniforms."
Roark and Thorin looked at each other, then returned their gazes to the screen, pleased smiles curving their lips. "A show of strength and unity. Very good idea." Roark Sr. said. "Are you boys eating? Sleeping?" he asked them worriedly. "You need to keep your strength up, your minds sharp."
"Eating, yes," Logan answered. "Harry and Roark are both great cooks and insist on feeding us every night. Sleeping? Not so much, though some nights are better than others. On the nights that I wake up and can't get back to sleep no matter how hard I try, I'll call Severus."
A gasp of pretended horror. "Logan...dear, sweet little brother, please do not tell me that you actually wake him up... that you get him out of bed to come over and--"
"Dacian Michael Durin-Prince Snape!" came the sudden warning growl. "Not...one...more...word. Not if you know what is good for you."
Dacian laughed as he looked at his husband. "Yes, dear. Whatever you say, dear." Then he sobered. "I miss you dreadfully, Sev."
"Cheeky bastard," he grumbled, though he smiled. "I miss you too. Give Grace and Sasha a kiss, and tell the monsters I miss them."
"I will not tell our son and daughter you called them monsters, but I will give them kisses, and let them know you miss them."
"Logan, are you having nightmares?"
"Yes, Lex. That, and sometimes, my mind just will not shut up. I just can't relax enough to fall asleep.
"You didn't fail him, Logan. Neither of you did. You both DO realize that, I hope."
Logan's eyes dropped away.
"Logan, we all read the report when it came back from the medical examiner. Even had you known any emergency medical, there would have been nothing you could have down for him."
Logan's head jerked up, eyes going to Kili, who had the same expression in his dark eyes as he had in his. "What do you mean, Desmond?" he asked, looking back to the vid screen, and his brother, who had appeared on the screen behind Dacian.
"Poison," Schyler answered. "There was poison, on the blade, something I have never seen before. Severus, I need you to see if you can get ahold of a sample. Everything we've tried here to identify it has destroyed the specimen we were trying to analyze."
Severus gave a nod, pulling his midnight gaze from his husband to look at Schyler. "I'll see what I can do. From the sounds of it, though, we're going to have to get our hands on something fresh."
"That would be my guess, too. Let us know what you find out."
"Of course."
"I don't know, Schy, maybe if we had gotten there sooner, found him--"
"Logan Adrien Durin, you stop that right now, young man!" Dacian barked out.
"OW! Severus!" he cried, his hand going to the back of his head where his brother-in-law had just whacked him. "GUYS!" he cried out a second time when the other four hit him in whatever place they could reach.
"Then stop being stupid," came Roark's growl. "We talked about this, Logan. It was NOT your fault, and you have got to stop believing that it is. Kale sent the three of you out that night knowing full well that what he was about to do was wrong. He knew the risk he was taking, but took it anyway when he decided to confront a leak on his own."
"Rory's right, Logan," Desmond said quietly. "Listen to me, brother. Kale's mistake that night was in thinking that he could handle him, or her, on his own. THAT, boys, is always a mistake, and part of why we ALWAYS work in teams."
"I have told you over and over, young man," Severus growled at him, the look in his midnight eyes stern. "Kale knew what he was doing was wrong, but he did it anyway because of his need to protect the three of--"
"Damn it, Severus, we don't need to be protected!" he cried out in exasperation.
"No, my nephew, you don't," came from Thorin, "but forgive us when we keep trying anyway."
"Old habits are hard to break, little brother."
"We ARE trying, Logan, but you and Chris are our babies, at least until we finally find that boy Dad had with his second wife. We are well aware that you have all grown into fine men, and are quite capable of taking care of yourselves. We just can't, no matter how hard we try, to help ourselves."
