Roark gave her an answering, weak smile, bent his head to press a kiss to her temple as Harry's hand run through her hair, both tensing suddenly when they saw Apollo hurrying into the bridge.
Athena saw him too. "Go. He will need to be told, and once he is, he will need you. He and Zac are like the two of you."
Both gave nods, then quickly moved away just as he reached his father to gasp out. "Cylons! It was an ambush all along. I had to leave Zac. He's disabled. I'd like to go back and...lead...him..." he saw his expression change. "What?"
"I'm afraid that will not be possible," Adama told him, a hand coming up to wrap around his wrist.
"Father, I didn't know what else to do! If I don't go back he doesn't stand a chance!" He felt a smaller hand slip into his, turned his head to see his youngest nephew, his expression... "Zac?"
A nod. "His ship was destroyed just short of the fleet," he answered, his voice made much deeper because he was barely controlling his emotions, and with his shields so thin because of what had happened on the Atlantia, he was swiftly being overwhelmed as he was having trouble keeping everyone out. "It wasn't your fault, Uncle Apollo," he said quickly, feeling all to much the burst of guilt, of failure to protect. "He knew the risks, just as we all do."
"I know he did," came softly, "but I left him." He pulled free of him and turned away, his head bowed. "Bright KOBOL, Roark, I LEFT him!"
"We know," Harry spoke up then, moving up on his other side, slipping an arm around him to hug him, which he turned to return. "But think about it logically. As much as it hurts to, you had no real choice. He knew that and so did you. Someone had to get to the fleet with the warning, and with his viper damaged...he knew he would never be able to keep up with you."
"That really DOES NOT make me feel any better, Harry."
"Nor would it any of us that would have had to make the same decision. We don't, under any circumstances, leave our people behind. You intended to return after reporting...It just was not meant to be."
"Captain Hadrian, Captain Roark, Captain Apollo," came Colonel Tigh's voice, "as sorry as I am about Zac, we need to know how many Baseships we're dealing with."
"No Baseships," Apollo answered immediately, drawing free of his nephew's comforting holds to turn to the Colonel, moving toward the stairs where he stood.
"You must be mistaken, Captain. Cylon fighters can't operate this far from Cylon without Base--"
"I'm telling you, Colonel, there were no Baseships!" he snapped out harshly "Just those damn fighters lined up from here to forever! Certainly more than we could possibly count."
"How do you account for that, Apollo?"
A deep sigh as he ran a hand through his dark hair. "I just don't know, Father," he said, drawing in another deep breath, released it, then went on more calmly. "We picked up three empty tankers on our scanners. There was a fourth one tucked in behind the first three that we DIDN'T pick up. My guess would be they used those tankers to refuel from wherever their Baseships are right now."
"But...why?" he asked. "Why operate so far from Cylon without Baseships when it wasn't necessary? They would have been well out of range at the Old Moon of Cimtar." Tigh asked in confusion, looking from the Adama's to notice that Ethan and Sebastien Durin had come onto the bridge.
"Unless..." Adama began, whose gaze now swung to Roark, who, sensing the presence of two of his brothers behind him, turned into them, "it WAS necessary for them to be somewhere else."
Roark's sudden sharp gasp had everyone in hearing distance turning to look at them, seeing his eyes widen, a horrified expression now in them. "The COLONIES!" he gasped out. "Of COURSE!" he drew immediately away from Sebastien. "A two-pronged attack. Attack US here, far from home so we couldn't return quickly, while their Baseships attacked the Colonies with no chance of our interfering!"
Adama nodded, turning to hurry up the steps. "Bill, get me the President!" he ordered reaching the viewer just as it lit. "Mr. President, I request permission to leave the fleet. We have reason to believe our Home Worlds will be facing immediate attack."
"How could I have been so wrong?" he asked, shaking his head as behind him an explosion sounded.
"Mr. President--"
"I have led the entire human race to ruin."
"Perhaps you have, Sir," Roark spoke up as another explosion sounded close by, "but we may yet have time to save some of them."
He looked at the screen suddenly. "How?" there came yet a third explosion, a burst of fire off to the left.
"Let me take one Battlestar. We'll head immediately for Home," Adama spoke up, wrapping a hand around his grandson's wrist, the screen's image waving, beginning to fade out.
"Bill, maintain the contact," Roark looked over at him.
"I'm trying. The communications station must be damaged over there."
"...the Solaria," they heard as the screen lit again just as the sound of glass shattering sounded.
"Oh great KOBOL!" Harry gasped in horror. "That was their main star field window," he said, moving behind Roark as they watched the vacuum of space begin to blow through the Atlantia's bridge. "The fools. They didn't close their positive shield."
"Positive shield. Now," came the immediate order.
The huge shield over their own main star field window slid open, showing the Battlestar Atlantia under heavy Cylon attack. Fires could be seen raging everywhere within and without her. Mere microns later, a huge explosion, a blinding light...
When the light cleared...the Atlantia was gone.
