Talking it through
Thea woke slowly, her eyes fluttering before fully opening to the dimly lit room. Shifting slightly she winced as pain shot through her lower back, and she let out a small, involuntary moan.
The pain helped to wake her, however, and her eyelids snapped back as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings. She found herself lying on a large, double bed, a plush black-covered duvet warming her body. Instantly she realised that she must be in Snape's rooms, in Snape's bed. This thought disturbed her slightly, but as her mind td bad back to the previous nights events, she actually felt less uneasy.
Her movements careful, Thea eased herself off the bed, her eyes moving to take in her surroundings. Candles sat in large, ornate holders, some twisted like the body of a snake, their melted appearance showing their clear use. Everything was black and blood red, a colour scheme that was so fitting for the brooding, vicious Potions Master.
The mere thought of his vicious nature and Thea paused. Surely, she of all people should know that Snape wasn't entirely how he initially seemed? Although part of her was disgusted and angry with him for his action, a larger part of her knew that, like her, he was a survivor, and like it or not they were in this together,
Feeling more then a little trepidation, Thea walked into the adjoining room where she was sure Snape was waiting.
She found him sitting in one of the armchairs near the fire, a glass of what looked like brandy in his hands and a brooding expression on his face. He didn't seem aware of Thea's presence and she took the opportunity to watch him, noting the fine lines around his mouth, the smudges under his eyes and the thoughtful slightly lost expression on his face.
Thea walked carefully into the room, still sore from the night before.
'Professor.' She said quietly unwilling to disturb his thoughts. Snape lifted his face towards her, his eyes instantly grasping hers with their gaze, and it seemed for just a second as if he was looking for reassurance.
'Thea. Please take a seat.'
Thea obeyed, never taking her eyes from his face. He in turn watched her.
'Take this.' He murmured softly though his tone was straightforward. He pulled a vial from the deep pocket of his robe and handed it to Thea. She drank it down in two large gulps.
'Professor.' Thea started not wanting to hear him apologise once more.
'Last night was awful, I'm not going to lie to you. But it was out of your control, out of our control, and although it should never have happened I knew when I started all this that the road would not be smooth.'
She took a breath, watching Snape's face carefully.
'I'm not going to forgive you because there is nothing to forgive. I've been assigned to you as your charge, which means for the time being at least we're in this together. And that's much better than being alone.'
Thea stopped, unsure of what else to say. Snape's face was unreadable, his black eyes turned towards the fire. Suddenly he dropped his head into his hands and rubbed at his face wearily.
'Thea, I can't tell you how I feel hearing your statement. I am lost for words.'
Thea nodded slightly, fighting back the tears which threatened to spill again. She knew that if they were honest with each other now then their partnership would be easier.
Snape turned his black eyes back to hers and said simply, 'I am proud to have made your acquaintance.'
A ghost of a smile tugged at Thea's face, and she knew that it was a sad smile. Snape had said it all. He didn't need to say that he was terribly ashamed of his actions, that despite what Thea had said he would never be able to look at her without seeing what he had done. All that was in the room with them, beating down on them oppressively.
'I should be getting back to my dorm.' Thea spoke softly and Snape nodded.
'Yes. Yes you should. The door is unlocked.'
He made no indication that he was going to move, he just kept staring into the fire, his face drawn. Thea stood, pausing to look down at him. She had never seen him so moved, so distraught, and she didn't even want to guess at what he was thinking.
Despite how disgusted and terrified part of her was, she knew that she and Snape were similar, and that despite everything he had always been there.
Calmly Thea walked over to Snape, bending down slightly to take his face in her hands.
His eyes flicked up to hers in confusion, and his hands flew up to rest on her own. Slowly as if afraid she would frighten him, keeping her wide eyes on his, Thea bent down and brushed her lips against Snape's in a soft kiss.
'Remember that. Not last night, not all the events before, just that.' Thea said, fighting to keep the emotion out of her voice, and then without looking back she left Snape's chambers.
