A/N:
Thank you for all the wonderful new reviews. You guys are great. I hope you’ve all been enjoying the new
chapters whether you were able to review or not. There was a question about whether or not we
would be seeing more of Blaise and Greg and the answer is yes. The answer is also yes to whether or not
Blaise and Ginny will be a couple. They
still won’t be as prominent, but we’ll get glimpses of them. I’m considering writing a few little one-shot
side fics from the PoV’s of
Ginny, Blaise, Greg, Ron and Hermione since their PoV’s
never occur in the main fic. If any of you like this idea and would like
to see it, please let me know. I’ll try
to fit them in while I’m still writing NP, but even if I finish NP first I can
always come back and write the one shots later.
Also (and I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but I have
discussed it with the challenger) I’m planning on there being a sequel to this,
so you’ll definitely see more of them in the piece when I get around to
it. Hope everyone is doing well and
having a nice weekend! Read, Review, and
Enjoy!

Chapter 21: The Hufflepuff Horcrux
October 4th
If Harry was to admit it (and he
probably would without being tortured) he was just as excited as Eris to be
going to France. He’d heard amazing things about the chateaus
of the Loire Valley. Hermione had once shown him a book with
several photos if the more famous ones.
As a matter of fact, Hermione, Ginny, and Eris were pouring over that same
book at that very moment, looking at pictures of this Villandry
place where they were going. He’d snuck
a peak a moment before and thought that, while it was a really lovely place
with a spectacular garden, it was a bit…understated in comparison to many of
the other chateaus shown in the book.
“Harry,” Hermione called, gaining his
attention. “This book says that Villandry is most famous for its gardens, a bit ironic
isn’t it? Such beautiful gardens and not
one of us can ever step foot in them.”
Harry frowned. “Wizards and witches often go on vacation to
see places like this, just like Muggles. How do the French wizarding
authorities prevent incidents if many of the chateaus are booby trapped like
Draco was talking about earlier?”
The blond
in question removed himself from his position leaning against Harry and
stretched. “The chateaus that have
previously been in the possession of wizards are flagged and secretly
searched. Any wizarding
traveling in France
with the intention of visiting the chateaus will be forewarned of the few that
are off limits. Villandry
happens to be one that is usually avoided.
The chateau itself is benign enough, but the gardens and the medieval
fortress have some nasty surprises.”
“Sounds charming,” Blaise said with a
smirk. “When do we leave?”
Harry frowned. “No way, we’re going in with the same group
as last time. We don’t need to endanger
anyone else.”
“Oh come on, Harry,” Ron whined. “Let the rest of us in on this! Its simple,
right? All we do is follow the
instructions that Eris got from the little box.
We’re in, we’re out, we see a couple of Spanish
paintings along the way.”
“Yeah, Harry,” Blaise chipped in with a
laugh. “All we have to do is stay out of
the gardens and nothing can go wrong.”
Harry looked to his mentor who
shrugged. “Though I disapprove of the
nonchalant attitude that misters Zabini and Weasley
are taking, I must admit that I can’t see there being anything extremely
dangerous along the way.”
Eris was smiling at him then. “The parchment mentioned there being a couple
of nasty poltergeists, but that’s nothing we can’t handle. It also says that the Horcrux
has a guardian that we’ll need to get past before we can retrieve it. The cup itself is located in the center of
this ceiling decoration.”
Harry peered closely at the
picture Eris was pointing at. The
caption said that it was originally the ceiling from a Spanish mosque. It reminded him a bit of the crocheted
doilies that Aunt Petunia had kept on her end tables, but it was far more
beautiful. There was a ten-pointed star
pattern worked through it and the center piece looked a bit like an encrusted
crown. It was done up in lovely hues of
gold, orange, and red.
“So the cup either is, or is within
this little center knob,” Harry asked quietly.
Hogwarts was a beautiful, magical place, but there was nothing as
gorgeous as this within it walls. This
intricate ceiling more than made up for what Harry had considered the rather
plain exterior of the chateau.
“It’s within it,” Eris said with a sigh. “If it was outside we’d probably just be able
to levitate it down, but as things stand we need to get past the guardian
first.”
“Piece of cake,” Draco said smugly. “After all, Harry did get passed that sphinx
in fourth year.”
“And we’ll have Hermione and Eris with us,”
Blaise added. “Can’t
go wrong with them on the case.”
“More Hermione than myself I should think,”
Eris said with a wry smile. “I’m not
much of an on the spot problem solver. I
like to mull things over.”
“So when do we leave again,” Greg asked
quietly.
“As soon and Sirius and Remus get back with
the port key,” Hermione said in an authoritative tone. “Professor McGonagall is making it for
them. Does everyone have their bag
properly packed?”
“Yes mother,” Ginny said with a giggle. “Could we really be there all weekend? What about the Muggles
who come to tour?”
“There are not very many this time of year,
Miss Weasley,” Severus said. “If we do
remain overnight, we will simply need to blend in when morning comes.”
Harry noticed that Ginny was
looking at the book again and frowning.
“What is it, Ginny?”
“How could anything be wrong with these
gardens? It says here that most of them
are vegetable gardens,” Ginny said in a disbelieving tone. “And look at the picture! I don’t think any of these hedges are more
than a meter tall.”
“You would be surprised,” Severus said darkly,
“at the transformations that a few, well placed dark curses with trigger
devices can render.”
Sirius and Remus burst into the
room then with Miss Roslyn tagging along.
Remus was beaming. “Who’s ready
for a trip?”
_______________________________________________________________________
Taking a port key really wasn’t so
bad, but when it was with twelve people everyone tended to fall all over each
other. When they landed, it was in a
heaping tangle of arms and legs.
However, since everyone was in a good mood, it was easily laughed off by
most, though Severus didn’t do more than snort.
Eris simply rolled her eyes at him and kept her eyes on the prize. They were going to take out one more Horcrux and she loved the way it felt to know they were
striking yet another secret blow to Voldemort.
She couldn’t wait for the moment when the bastard realized that he was
about to die and there would be no third return.
“Well, let’s get moving,” Severus said
firmly. “Everyone use Disillusionment
Charms and keep silent until we’re passed any Muggle security men who might be
about. The information that Minerva got
says that they keep know guards within the chateau.”
Everyone
nodded silently and did as they had been told.
Eris quickly stepped into the lead as their first destination was the
courtyard. They saw only two security
guards making the rounds and they were both easily avoided. Once they were in the courtyard, Eris had
everyone fan out.
“We’re looking for the only five blue,
cobblestones in the courtyard,” Eris said quietly. “When you find them, simply stand by
them. They need to be pressed in
simultaneously.”
It took
nearly an hour for them to find all five stones in the darkness. They had to keep their Lumos
spells at a minimal level to avoid detection. Eris, Harry, Draco, Blaise, and
Hermione all stood directly behind each stone.
Severus was out in front of them, preparing to offer the signal.
“Everyone, position one foot directly above
the stone,” Severus called out quietly. “On three, step down hard. One, two, THREE.”
They all
stomped down on their chosen stones and then waited…and waited…and waited. Eris frowned and looked over to Blaise. “Do you see anything, Zabini?”
“Only Ginny’s bum,” he hissed back. “She’s bending over looking in through that
window over there.”
“You never mind my sister’s bum, “Ron snapped
playfully.
“Only if you stop minding ‘Mione’s,”
Zabini retorted with a grin. “Does anyone see anything?”
Remus cleared his throat. “I have a feeling that the guardian will be
waiting for us within the chateau’s walls.
I suggest that we head inside and find this special ceiling.”
Inside the chateau Eris kept a
wary eye out for the being they were to encounter, but she couldn’t help but
let her gaze linger on the wonderful seventeenth century Spanish paintings on
the walls. Even the architecture
interested her, though she didn’t really have the time to spending dallying
about with it.
“Eris, something moved up ahead,” Blaise
called out and she saw him grab Ginny’s hand and pull the girl close to
him. At least things were progressing
well in that quarter. She would need to
seek out another couple to dabble with.
Hermione was standing close to her
and whispered, “Look up. We’ve found our
ceiling. Now all we need is the…”
“What a sorry lot of wankers
is this,” asked a raspy voice. They all
began looking about for its source, but none could be immediately found. It called out again a few moments later. “And stupid too, for none of them speaks even
as well as me.”
“Who’s there,” Harry called out quietly. “Are you the guardian?”
“I don’t fell like telling you since you’re so
very slow,” the voice said testily. “By
the time you decide if I’m telling the truth I’ll be dead, gone and replaced by
one of my many children. Did I mention
that you’re all rather hard on the eyes?
Except for that little redheaded chit.
Tasty bit of baggage that one.
Would you trade her for free passage for the prize?”
“Of course not you dirty mouth piece of rot,”
Blaise hissed and Ron nodded enthusiastically.
“What about the one with the eyes like shiny
bits,” the voice asked. “She’s got a
rack that could keep a man buggering his brains numb, but there’s a mean, rabid
sort of look about her.”
“I beg your pardon,” Eris snapped. “Do your duty and step forward before you
push our patience too far. We could just as easily burn this shack to
the ground and take the cup as sit and listen to you beforehand.”
“See gents, didn’t I say she looked
rabid?” As the voice faded a figure
standing no more than three and a half feet high sauntered out of the
shadows. It was covered with fur, had a
pointed nose, and there was a bit of a wobble to its step as though it didn’t
often go about on two feet. “There now,
I’ve come out, you sorry lot of tossers. What is it you want with old Jarvis?”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Draco
drawled. “You’re called Jarvis the Jarvey?”
“Is that meant to be a joke you pointy nosed
ferret,” Jarvis sniped.
“You’re rather eloquent for a Jarvey,” Hermione commented with a frown.
“Flattery will get you no where you
bushy-haired minx.” The Jarvey stepped close to Eris then. “Now you rabid beast, have you come for the
prize?”
“Yes,” Eris hissed. “Now give us our challenge and we’ll be out
of your fur.”
“Very well,” Jarvis said with a toothy
grin. “Give me the answer to this riddle:
I may be seen lurking up in a high
tree,
I’m longer than you wankers could ever hope to be.
If I was a bird, silver and green
feathers I’d preen,
I live on an isle and a land very
green.
I shrink when I want to avoid all
you hags,
Since I have no desire to be
turned into bags.
What am
I?”
Ginny growled. “That was a horrible riddle.”
“Take it or leave it you flaming haired bint,” the Jarvey said and stuck
out his tongue.
“Well it’s quite easy really,” Hermione said
in a superior tone. “You simply gave too
much information away. You’re a moke.”
“Damn and blast, so there’s a brain under all
that hair,” the Jarvey said snidely. “Very well.”
The
little beast clapped his hands together and then pointed at the ceiling. “It’s open now. All you need to do is summon it to you.”
Eris nodded. “Accio Horcrux!”
It came
whizzing at her and Harry suddenly called out to her, “Wait! Watch out!”
But it was too late. As the cup cam slamming into her hand, Harry
dove towards her, obviously trying to knock her out of the way of
something. As she fell backwards with
Harry atop her, she looked down and saw that the floor had disappeared. Acting quickly, she twisted and threw the Horcrux at Severus.
“Take care of it!”
The she
and Harry were falling down the tunnel that had appeared beneath them. They hit something solid and began to slide,
down and to the side, then curving around.
Suddenly it seemed as though they were floating quickly upwards. Eris looked up and saw that there was a dim
light above them. They both came
shooting out of the ground then and fell into a small heap.
Eris sat on the ground dazed for a
few moments and heard Harry moaning beside her.
It wasn’t until Harry’s hands clamped onto her arm in a vice grip that
Eris opened her eyes. What she saw did
not make her happy.
She let
her breath out in a rush. “Well shit.”
_______________________________________________________________________
“Where did they go you insolent bit of fluff,”
Severus raged with his hand clamped around the Jarvey’s
throat.
“Oh the tunnel will shit them out in the
gardens it will,” the creature said with a sneer. “Lucky for you that the
rabid one tossed you the prize.
You’ll never see that pair again.”
With that, the Jarvey
disappeared with a ‘pop’ and the group of witches and wizards were letting
staring and the now closed floor in horror.
“We’ve got to get out there,” Draco said in a
rush. “We’ll have to knock out those two
Muggles so that we can send up a flare to let the
twins know where we are.”
“No matter what, we need to get out there
now,” Sirius said gravely. “The garden
is probably already changing into whatever deathtrap its
meant to be.”
Everyone
nodded in a agreement and Severus sighed.
Couldn’t his charges stay out of trouble for more than five
minutes? Look at Blaise and Draco, two
of his old Slytherins. They weren’t
causing any trouble aside from being dense enough to take up with
Gryffindors. “Let’s go.”
________________________________________________________________________
Harry most certainly did not like
the way the innocent looking garden was changing. Within moments of their arrival, the hedges
had shot up at least thirty feet.
Strange flowers were blooming all about and vines were beginning to curl
their way across the ground. At least it
seemed that they wouldn’t have to fight any creatures, but the plants were
certain to be dangerous.
“Which way do you want to try first,” Eris
asked in a soft tone.
Harry followed her lead and spoke
quietly. “There was a larger clearing up
ahead and to the right before the hedges shot up. None of the walls seemed to have shifted so I
say we should head for that. We’ll have
more room to fight if nothing else.”
Eris nodded her acceptance and
Harry held his wand at the ready, taking the lead in front of his sister. She was slowly walking backwards directly
behind him and the sight may have been rather funny if it weren’t so obviously
necessary. It felt as though the hedges
had thousands of eyes and all of them were on them.
“This is really giving me the creeps,” Eris
whispered. “I know something’s out
there, but I can’t sense any real emotions.
Are you picking up on any thoughts?”
Harry focused and stretched out
his mind. He could just barely pick up
on the thoughts of their friends and Draco’s panicked emotions were, of course,
filling the back of his mind. “There’s
nothing in the gardens. I can hear the
others. I think they’re on their way
out. They’re going to try and figure out
where we are in the gardens I think.”
“They’re not exactly a maze,” Eris said
quietly. “That leaves us having to
believe that there is something seriously dangerous in those leaves.”
“Wish Neville was here,” Harry muttered. “He’d figure out what we’re up against with a
single look I bet.”
“Oh sweet Circe,” Eris hissed. “Don’t turn around now, Harry, but I think
I’m facing it right now.”
Harry spun about and nearly dropped his wand
at the sight of what looked like a gigantic snap dragon. An eerie, hissing growl came out of its
gaping jaws and it was dragging itself along the ground with thick, whip-like
vines. “We need to get out of here
now! Where there’s one there might be
another.”
Eris began to push him then in the
direction they had been heading. “Quickly, Harry, run!
Transform as you go into the Horntail!
It can fly out of here and it’s big enough to take that brute and any
others on.”
Harry did begin to run and her
heard Eris behind him. “What about you?”
“I’ll take on the Abraxan
form, just get yourself out of here,” Eris shrieked. <br.
Harry let out a horrified gasp as he saw a
large vine slam into the ground between himself and his sister. Eris was forced to veer down an early right
turn. She didn’t look back and he only
prayed that transforming and taking to the sky was the right answer. As he continued to run he let his body shift
and stretch until he found himself pressing the hedge walls outwards. With a strong push off, he launch himself
into the air and began to circle the garden trying to spot Eris.
________________________________________________________________________
Eris was beginning to tire as she
ran. She knew damned well that her Abraxan wouldn’t be maneuverable enough to avoid all the
vines lashing out at her. Even her basic
Arabian form wouldn’t cut it. But what
else did she have? Simply running about
as a human was only going to keep her alive for so long. She thought of what Tahdei
had said about her and Harry having a form to represent each of their elemental
powers. She should have something to
represent the air then, even if it was her secondary power.
Saying a quick prayer to Merlin,
Eris closed her eyes and focused every fiber of her being on transforming while
thinking of her power over the element of air.
A few moments later, she felt herself float up off the ground. She opened her eyes just in time to see a
thick vine flying at her face. She tried
to scream, but only a soft, mournful wail came out of her chest. The vine simply passed right through her.
Eris stood…er…floated
in stunned silence and then lifted her hands to look at them. She was nearly completely transparent! What the devil had she turned into?
The
beastly dragon snap tried to whip her again and it spurred her into
motion. She looked up and saw red sparks
shooting into the air, signaling the group’s position. She also saw Harry flying towards the
sparks. With as must speed as she could
muster, Eris took off towards the sparks, ripping through the hedges as she
went.
______________________________________________________________________
Draco sighed in momentary relief
as Harry landed beside the group and transformed back. He rushed over to his mate and pulled him
into a strong hug. He loved the way
Harry immediately began to blush. It
would be a while before his green-eyed angel was comfortable with such public
affection, but he did look adorable all aflame.
That was when he realized that Eris wasn’t immediately behind her
brother.
“Harry, love, where’s Eris?” Draco asked
nervously. He didn’t sense that anything
had happened to his now sister, but he was pretty new to this.
Harry shook his head. “We got separated. She said she was going to try and fly out
with the Abraxan.
I tried to find her from the sky, but it was too dark. There were these giant plants and…”
“Ahhhh,” Ginny
shrieked and the two boys spun about to look at her. Something nearly transparent zipped out from
the hedges and moved right through Ginny, Blaise, and then Greg before finally
managing to stop. When Draco got a good
look at the creature, his jaw dropped.
“Whew, well that was close,” Eris said
happily. “What do you all think?”
Draco felt Harry beginning to
shake violently and was immediately a bit peeved with his best friend. “Eris, change back now! Harry thinks you’ve gone and died.”
Eris’ eyes went wide and fearful
and a moment later she was her normal, human self again. Hermione was on her in an instant. “Eris, you transformed into an Aeolian
Sprite! That was amazing!”
Eris chuckled weakly. “Lucky me. Are you alright, Harry?”
Harry nodded and Draco chose to
continue glaring at his friend. He had a
hard enough time keeping Harry happy and stable without everyone pretending to
be dead. Okay…so not everyone…
Severus stepped over to Eris and
wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
“Well, if everyone is prepared. I
say that we should get back to Hogwarts to dispose of the Horcrux
before the French wizarding authorities arrive to
right the gardens.”
Draco nodded, pulling Harry
close. “That sounds like an excellent
plan to me!”
Draco hoped that the rest of the
weekend would go by quietly.
