“Severus---”
When Severus Snape came out of the temple, Dumbledore didn’t know what to expect. He had been taken through a ‘guided tour’ of the Potion Master’s last memory and was still immersed in its whirlpool and it tumbles him from side to side. So many of his plans have gone amiss and the future that looked so clear was now bleak with immense darkness. The only person he trusted with the truth walked towards him with a reproachful glare.
“Headmaster,” Severus said, “I have very little time to spare and what I must tell cannot wait.”
Dumbledore felt a dread run through him as though he already knew why Severus could not be detained longer. In fact, every step he took seemed to open doors that had been shut or illuminate pathways that were once non-existent.
“Severus,” Dumbledore began to speak. His lips quivered as he tried to bring the thoughts in his head to them. It was difficult, for he knew not what to say to one he had condemned.
“We made many mistakes, Headmaster.” Severus said. “Both of us, and as I pay for those I have done, in time, so will you for yours. If not in this life, perhaps in the next.”
Dumbledore swallowed hard; he tried to recount all the mistakes that he made and found them easy to undo. “We can still change the outcome of ---“
“Albus,” Severus cut him. His sharp dark eyes pierced his soul with fear. “It was never Harry.”
He hung his head. At last, he understood.
“He was the bait, they have been after Ron and his seed all this time. His son was the price and the debt had been paid.” Severus said disdainfully.
“How were we supposed to know? The curse was clearer than daylight! Aidan suffered the fate of the undead to buy Emmanuel back! That is exactly what I tried to do for Ron!” Dumbledore countered.
“You cannot correct a mistake by making a new one, you of all people, should have known this!” Severus spat. “I never understood why he pushed you to sink that blade into his gut --- he wanted nothing more than to be back in Aidan’s arms, you said.”
“That was what he wanted!” Dumbledore argued. In his mind, the memories had played back like it was only yesterday. He knew the truth would make it out and deep inside him he knew that ugly though it was, he had to face it, and pay for that day.
“He didn’t have to pay for that debt twice!” Severus cried. “Aidan would not have proceeded with the task if you hadn’t given him the book of the Gatekeepers!”
Dumbledore closed his eyes tightly. Remembering that day was very painful and it made his stomach churn with disgust. He knew he was fated to be guardian of a Nymphrodite because the seers have told him his destiny even before he went to Hogwarts. He was told to choose his allies wisely and to never place himself before his fate. However, there were influences about that made his corroded his decision and he chose to be selfish, to gain the approval of all those who would keep him for the task of the guardian meant death.
“I wanted the Nymphrodites to be free of the curse,” He said sorrowfully. His eyes welled with painful tears and they slowly slid down the deep lines of his face. “I wanted to see the fulfillment of the Prophecies.”
“You wanted to be spared of death.” Severus scorned. “You are no different than Voldemort, and no doubt when the worlds are renewed, you and he will cross the same road again.”
The Gatekeepers provided him an escape from mortality. A simple parley, as long as you knew what to say to the Keeper of the Dead, what to offer her, you can buy yourself from death. Albus Dumbledore learned those passages by heart knowing those were the only ones he could ever use. He read every book that contained information on how to parley with Ji, stories of all those who have successfully parleyed for their lives or for the lives of those they love filled his mind for many years. He knew exactly what to do in her presence, having prepared for it for all his life.
Then it finally happened. Aidan McGrugger was the first Hogwarts student to be recruited by the Bureau. In his quest to rid the world of those that hunted humans, he met Emmanuel – a fifteen-year-old Nymphrodite from France. They fell in love, and he planned to raise their small family in New York where he knew Emmanuel would be well protected when they came and tore him from their house and did the forbidden ritual. He died and Aidan returned to Hogwarts broken and suicidal. Dumbledore felt pity for him and because he knew there was a way to buy one from death, he told Aidan of the book.
Aidan did as he was expected to do and the task was about to end. Emmanuel had risen from the dead and Aidan was now hunting the last one in his list. Dumbledore was there when he opened his eyes. They were in a tower far from anyone with magic or fangs but Emmanuel felt the threat of death closer now than it ever has been.
Dumbledore shut his eyes tight as he remembered how Emmanuel cried begging him to end his life. He held Godric’s sword weakly in one hand and could not move fast enough to throw it on the ground. Emmanuel grabbed his hand that gripped the sword tightly and thrust the blade deep into his belly just below his navel. The look of horrified pain and ebbing life was enough to melt Dumbledore where he stood but something else happened before he could even utter a word. A loud flapping of wings a figure hurled inside the tower, a skirmish between two forlorn warriors one with wings cut almost to its edge. In a flurry of blood and darkness, Aidan was about to overcome his enemy when his eyes fell upon the falling body of Emmanuel; his torn gut and splattered womb oozing out of his abdomen as he slowly crumbled to the ground. With a cry of anger and fear, Aidan forgot his opponent and ran with all haste to the fallen Nymphrodite. Aveddon fled with broken wings and tattered pride but very much alive to take another Iranna. Aidan looks up and sees the sword still dripping with Emmanuel’s blood fastened upon Dumbledore’s left hand.
He tried to tell him what really happened but Aidan dashed at him with a furious blade and left him dying on the cold stony floor of the tower. It was then that he called for the book, took out the dagger, and conjured the spell. He parleyed with Ji.
“When she asked you to pass it unto the next Defender, you should have refused. You knew then that the Parley was going to bring about the same event, that another Aidan McGrugger would come back to haunt your past.” Severus said.
“I couldn’t see --- “
“You couldn’t? Or---wouldn’t?”
Dumbledore swallowed again as he remembered making the trip all the way back to Tibet. This time he was alone. He begged Wu Peng to tell him the Prophecy concerning the child, but Wu Peng would not unless he gave up Ji. He asked for scrolls concerning the prophecy of the child and was ghastly denied. In his desperation, he went back to New York and handed the book of the Gatekeepers over to DeMorney, a new chancellor in the Bureau.
“I had the best intentions in mind!” Dumbledore protested.
“Sending me to spy on them? To read their minds! I should have known it would turn ill. Legilemency was never to be used on students!” Severus said angrily.
Dumbledore nodded, letting more tears run down his wrinkled face. He had asked Severus to watch Harry, knowing he was the Nymphrodite destined to be under his charge. Wu Peng had told him to let things unfold and not to interfere. Interfere he did; after finding out that Hermione had taken it upon herself to help Harry learn more about Nymphrodites, Dumbledore sent Severus to Bulgaria on the pretence that he was under the direction of the dark lord. Severus had told Karkaroff about a copy of the Curse of the Iranna within the Bureau’s collection and secretly passed a note to his favorite pupil, Viktor Krum, about the Red Book.
“I did everything you told me to do, trusting in your wisdom. Now I have been immersed into this pool of sins!” Severus berated the old wizard.
“Enough!” Dumbledore cried. “I have tried to save your soul! Yours and Ron’s, and Harry’s! I have tried with all my wisdom! I cannot see what lies ahead anymore than you can!”
“But you were given a warning!” Severus cried.
“He was selfish! He would not share the prophecy with me! He would not tell me anything! I was appointed Guardian!”
“Guardian! Where is the Nymphrodite now, guardian?”
Dumbledore became silent. He had condemned Ron to death by making him believe that the Red Book would bring him back the life he so wanted. He had condemned Draco to an even darker grave by agreeing to use him as bait to lure the Defender back to the castle. He has condemned Severus to death by using him to get his plans done with delicate accuracy. Everything he planned --- according to Ji’s will --- worked like a well-oiled machine.
“I will try to get you out of here---“ Dumbledore said softly.
“There is only one way out of Antiquity, Albus Dumbledore.” Severus said. “And you cannot provide it for me.”
Dumbledore closed his eyes or perhaps the world he was leaving behind slowly darkened until at last there was nothing but black. A hand shook him and he opened his eyes. He looked up and saw Minerva beside him, Filch behind her, Hagrid, Rolanda Hooch, Hermione, and Fred Weasley all looking at him eagerly.
He turned to Severus Snape, felt his forehead. It was icy cold. His eyes were hard like marbles and there was no breath in him.
Dumbledore rose, turned around, and shook his head. A stifled crying filled the room.
“I tried.” He whispered then left the room.
